@CaptainObvious is that user allowed to use that profile picture?

@Phrancis everything looks better C#-style
Even mudpits like PHP

Maybe I should start using that. Though some Java folks may think otherwise. I do think Java indentation reads pretty well too... just not as well as C#.

12:32 AM
personally, I prefer:
if ($var == 'Foo') {
	echo 'Foo';
}
else {
	echo 'Bar';
}

That else looks wonky

1:00 AM
It does.
if ($var == 'Foo') {
    echo 'Foo';
} else {
    echo 'Bar';
}
And people who use tabs for whitespace get what they deserve ;-p

I like my else.

Go back to sleep ;-)

those timestamps look wonky

@rolfl Tabs are good when they're 4 spaces and you use 1 tab as a single level of indentation!

Thanks @rolfl for cleaning up my post :)
(and for answering of course, good points)

No problem... thanks for posting it ... ;-)
The design is hard to see in output like that... but, it's not to bad.
Also, I learned a bit about postgres and Text.

You think a chart would be better than a plain table export of the schema, next time?

Not sure, it raises an interesting scope problem, do we do design review, or code review .... a chart seems too... abstract.
there's enough nitty-gritty in what yu have to actually review the code, rather than (only) the design.
Daabase schemas are a blurry subject on CR anyway

True. I've tried to have schema design reviewed on DBA before, but they told me to post on Code Review... lol.

Well, the content you provided was neat, readable, and made sense, and I could scan i, and make comments, so, as far as I can tell, it makes it better than most things on CR.
in scope, or not.

I guess I'll take that as a compliment ;)

You should.
Did I not make that clear?
> I really don't see much to comment on here.
Not really good enough, is it.

It's good enough, guess I glazed over that sentence to look for stuff to actually make better

There we go, better now.

Probably normalize a bit more, good catch. Night @rolfl!
... LOL.
Since Postgres doesn't require an integer as an ID, I'll probably just create a card_type table and use card type names as PRIMARY KEY and set up a foreign key so we get a FK violation if we use a card_type that doesn't exist
I'm hoping 200 and cimmanon will add to it too, got some valuable Postgres advice from them in the past.

Nowhere. Your question contains no information about what you have tried at all. Try something, write code that tries to accomplish the task. If you run into a very specific problem in your code, then write a question about that specific problem and describe the expected results vs. the actual results and post on Stack Overflow. Be aware though that Stack Overflow closes and down-votes any questions of low quality. You need to put a lot of effort into your question when you post there. — Simon André Forsberg 9 secs ago

@Simon I reviewed code @Malachi wrote that used a class that I wrote. That felt like cheating too.

It does make it a better review though IMO
And most importantly: It indicates that the question doesn't mention all the context.
I gave @Phrancis' question a down-vote, because of this. If I know more context than the question itself writes, then the question can be significantly improved.

@JaDogg 100 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up, no data cap, about $34 USD / month
Holy crap, it seems like my internet is the cheapest around here... ?
@rolfl SEDE request, not sure how easy it would be to do though. The idea is that it is the same as Top X User Reputation but with a filter so that stale users are not shown. So say that you want to show Top 20 Users but with the filter that the user must have earned at least 500 reputation in the last 30 days.

@SimonAndréForsberg Probably, North America and UK are the most outrageous places...

Swedish internet is apparently quite cheap
Or I'm just lucky that I live in an apartment in a building that got fiber last year :)
Sorry btw, @rolfl. I stole an accept from you.

No problem ;-)
That puts 200_Success ahead of me again ;-)
The filter ... with the filter that the user must have earned at least 500 reputation in the last 30 days. is a hard one.

4:55 PM
@rolfl Santa has to fix that

Something like the last seen date, or the last answer date...

@rolfl yeah, I had a feeling that wouldn't be so easy...

Also, I have the custom one too, right.... just put in the 5 users you are interested in...

yes you do
So could you somehow grab all users that have gained more than X rep in Y days, and order them, then fetch their rating history?

I can probably do 'more than X upvotes in the past Y days'
Or, even 'more than X posts in the past Y days'
But, there needs to be some way to limit it to less than 20 users.... the performance is linear to the number of users in the result

4:59 PM
X posts in Y days might be even better actually....
what I wanted to avoid was a Top X User Reputation graph where so many lines have become more or less flat

Then, do you want the reputation to be baselined from 0, or baslined from their current reputation (so they all end at the same point)?

so instead of showing some of the old people that aren't as active anymore, I'd like to see the new shooting stars, to see how fast they pick up reputation (such as tim)
@rolfl I think baselined from 0 is better

OK, that should be easy to adjust later... let me play... ;-)

OK Monkey, go play :)

5:17 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg - shows some interesting names.... data.stackexchange.com/codereview/query/238785/…

125, 66, 65, 52... what does these numbers mean? reputation / day?
why did I get filtered away? Not enough average rep per day?

@SimonAndréForsberg Posts in the activity period

So you include the users that has the most activity in the recent period?

That was the idea, right?
The 'Weeks' is used to figure out how many posts are put through, andf the TopX selects the top X most active in that period.
You come in with 20 posts in the past 4 weeks ;-)
(set the TopX to 25 to get on the chart ;-)
(21 actually).

I think "Active User Reputation races" (specifically "Reputation") is a bit misleading, since the graph is about number of posts, not reputation

5:25 PM
Well... not completely. The original idea was to take the users with the most reputation. But if someone didn't match the filter, you would grab the next user. So at the top there would be you and 200, and then Loki would (probably) be filtered out because of low recent activity, then it would be me, then it would skip palacsint because of low activity, and so on...
@Phrancis is right there, also.

Oh, I see.... Hey, look, it';s a work in progress.... So, what you want is any user, ranked by reputation, that has (any) activity in the past X weeks.

@rolfl I think that is what I want, yes.
I am very impressed how quickly you came up with this one really

Now, @Phrancis - what title to give it?
@SimonAndréForsberg Believe it or not, the query is actually quite simple...... at least the part that selects which users to include:

How about, "Top X most active user in X days"

insert into #USERS
    select TOP ##TopX:int?18## u.Id as UserId,
           '''' + u.DisplayName + ' - ' + Cast(count(*) as NVarchar(10)) + '''' as Name,
           u.Reputation as Reputation
    from Users u,
         Posts p
    where Reputation > 101
      and p.CreationDate >= @adate
      and p.OwnerUserId = u.id
      and PostTypeId in (1,2)
    group by u.Id, u.DisplayName, u.Reputation
    having count(*) > 0
    order by Reputation Desc, Count(*) DESC
Where @adate is the date the activity is counted from.
All I changed is the orderby, and added the having clause, to get the change from the one that was only active in the past 4 weeks.
Now, should I post that query for review?

5:35 PM
I'm genuinely curious why you are adding an empty string at the beginning and end of your concatenation

@rolfl better, I think. A bit hard to tell as I'm not totally understanding the query. What is the exact filter right now?
@Phrancis it's not an empty string, it's a ' character

Ah, must be some kind of escape I'm not familiar with!

at least that's what I assume it is :)
I remember in Delphi that writing '' inside a string gave a single such character. So '''' would give a single '

@SimonAndréForsberg thanks. I'll ask @RubberDuck by PM or mail.

sometimes we do a little quick code reviews here in chat as well though, although we also talk about bananas, monkeys, and PHP. And a lot of other things

@AleksandrK. there is no such thing as PM or mail around here though. Your best bet is really to ask on the site itself. Do you have code that does what you want it to and just want to make it "better code"? If so, then you probably have something that is on topic for Code Review.
I don't even know if @RubberDuck knows Ruby on Rails, I just know that he knows Ruby.

I have few snippets that doesn't looks like good or amazing code:
def calc_parameters!

    prev_point = nil

    @points.each do |point|
      point[:distance] = 0 if prev_point.nil?
      unless prev_point.nil?
        datetime_1 = DateTime.strptime(point[:point_created_at], '%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S')
        datetime_2 = DateTime.strptime(prev_point[:point_created_at], '%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S')
        fl_time_diff = (datetime_1 - datetime_2) * 1.days
        @fl_time += fl_time_diff

        point[:distance] = Geospatial.distance [prev_point[:latitude], prev_point[:longitude]], [point[:latitude], point[:longitude]]
and I'm not sure, that this is a good style - I parse GPS data, and parser returns object of class TrackPoints, after it I call obj.process_data!
  def process_data!

    filter_by_freq!
    corr_elevation!
    calc_parameters!
    median_filter!

  end
I think this code smells, but don't know how to make it better

I'd recommend posting a question on the main site, @AleksandrK.

The idea is simple... deessed all in black, with a big sign in classic red "Hello... My name is" with "Life" in the white area.
Then we are attaching a vacuum hose to her...
Life Sucks.

Q: c++ Improving a bfs program

Tomislav ToplakThe task was to find the shortest path between P and K in a maze, where # = wall and . = free space. I've had a lot of trouble to pass on the int k, and it is the path length. I had to make a pair which contains a pair of x and y(the coordinates) and int k. Could i have done this any better witho...

@CaptainObvious Hm. I didn't know C++ had alternative keywords for || and !.

@Mat'sMug stars works on mobile now?

7:42 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg since I downloaded ChatSEy for Android, yes!
@janos it's quite an impressive progression you've got here.. I see you in my rear view mirror!

@Mat'sMug I think he's coming for me too!

Q: Tremaux Algorithm

Renren29I am trying to implement Tremaux Algorithm for a 2D maze. So far the robot works well however I have some problems with retraceStep(). I'm not asking how to implement that, but I just want to make sure that there are no serious logical flaws with my code. @Override public boolean drive2Exit...

Everything but the SASS block works. It successfully compiles JS and minifies everything else. — Krys 1 hour ago

Q: Wrapping jQuery empty() To Include A Callback

JasonI needed to write a method to extend the jQuery empty() function to include a callback. Since I didn't want to mess with namespaces, closures, etc, I instead wrote a regular function to wrap empty(). var emptyWithCallback = function(node, callback) { console.log('Entered emptyWithCallback()'...

MAKES SENSE Makes sense @Mat'sMug (sorry been writing SQL lol)

Trying to make (broken) code from an SO answer work... fun stuff
Any idea why this is just giving me an empty table xml_test?
SET SEARCH_PATH TO test;
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS xml_test CASCADE;
CREATE TABLE xml_test();
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION f_sync_from_xml()
  RETURNS VOID
  LANGUAGE plpgsql
AS $$
DECLARE
    myxml    xml;
    datafile text := '/Users/francisveilleux-gaboury/Downloads/Example%20Replay.xml';
BEGIN

myxml := pg_read_file(datafile, 0, 100000000);

INSERT INTO xml_test
SELECT (xpath('//xml_test/text()', x))[1]::text AS id
FROM   unnest(xpath('/xml/path/to/datum', myxml)) x;
END;
$$

@Mat'sMug I don't know why but I read that as nuclear what you're asking

8:04 PM
@Phrancis might be because of how the XML looks. I didn't expect CREATE TABLE xml_test(); to create anything more than an empty table though

Q: Enum list to STL container, part 2

prestokeysGoal: Write a function enumToSTLContainer that is to return any STL container whose elements are from a specified enum list. The current solution below uses the assumption that the enum underlying values start at zero and are consecutive, and hence needs improvement. The solution is in C++11 r...

That could very well be the problem @SimonAndréForsberg. I'm sure there is a way to coerce Postgres to just create columns on the fly based on XML tags, but I guess I'll have to dig some more to find it

@Phrancis I think this XML is a bit... unstructured to do it automatically. I think you'd be better of trying a manual approach

Any assembly programmers around ?

Sure, pic micro controller ASM ... ;-)
Anything with more than 1 register is more than you need...
.... and more than I understand
Harvard architecture for the win... with a 12-bit instruction byte, and an 8-bit data byte.
14 instructions only, so you can put an 8-bit constant on the instruction too ;-)
Now, how can I help?

Q: Should comments go before or after the start of a function?

Pikamander2Which of these two styles is considered to be better?
