7:01 PM
If global warming so "science" how come I'm not a polar bear?

wtf?

7:39 PM
@MattЭллен Eminently erudite.

:D he's a funny little bird!

7:52 PM
Do you understand it?

no

Anonymous
@MattЭллен Hehe, is that a troll account?

@JohanLarsson yeah, as far as that's possible :D
@snailboat yeah, making fun of men's rights activists :D

@MattЭллен elaborate?

@JohanLarsson well his statements are bird-brained, don't rely on logic and often have poor grammar, so there's a bit of interpretation involved.

7:57 PM
:)

:)

1 hour later…
9:00 PM
Haha.

9:54 PM
On ELU we use similes, not smilies.

I’m off to my favourite place I have such a tired old face There’s no point protesting I’m destined for resting No matter how much you grimace

@JohanLarsson: ^ For you.

nice ty

It's bad, you know.

so they say
Reminds me of Money Mark < pretty good

10:06 PM

I've been stuck on a ting for a while. I'm not good enough to know if it is even possible.

Whereas I merely have deadline pressures.

ew
I have not had much of that the last year
still working ~14 hours per day cos fun
do you write unit tests?

Not if I can help it.
I do front-end work, so it's hard to write unit tests for that. Also boring.
@JohanLarsson I'll work that much if it's fun, but I hate to do it under pressure. Because then you make wrong choices and mistakes and that takes the fun out of it.

10:24 PM
yeah pressure is not much fun

It is the opposite of fun.

do you work on short projects?

> Well, if that's the data model you decided to switch to, it's pretty clear I didn't accidentally write any reusable code last week. So I guess I'm just gonna have to roll it from square one—again.
From an email I just sent to the product manager.
@JohanLarsson Yeah. It's just that they take fucking forever because I never get any data or back-end services until after the deadline is critical.

no way to mock stuff?

Are you kidding? At this point, the prototype is the product.
I'm this close to saying fuck it and retiring from the rat race. I'm sick of being treated in this outrageous fucking manner. Am I the only one who cares about quality, ferchrissakes?

10:38 PM
I meant early in the project

They make a mockery of mock-ups.
In any case, mock-ups don't mean anything if you can't have a look at the data model. Can't start coding without that.

it is a sad story
I work in a place where we maintain stuff for long times so it is easy to make arguments for why quality matters
not just get shit out the door and € in

Nobody protests when I say we need time to do things right. But there's always some overpowering reason to do the quick solution.

money right

I mean, seriously, I have to do three different reports, with the same kind of output, and each one has a completely different data model.

10:47 PM
Are you the only front-end guy on the project?

On this project, yes.
I was supposed to have four weeks to complete my part, but they took the first three putting out a fire on something else. So I have to do it all by Friday now.

One alternative is to say simply not possible. It will take the time it takes.

Already tried that. Tired of talking about it.

ok /it you have my condolences

And mine.

10:54 PM
The worst part is, I hate having to make the compromises this schedule forces me to make.
I hate writing shitty code.

what happens if you just write perfect code and let it be late?

Yeah, and send them a warning e-mail in advance.

you are thinking about quitting the bs race any way

It doesn't work like that.

"FYI the thing is impossible to complete this week".

10:55 PM
They will just waste a day talking about it, and then the deadline STILL won't change.
Or they'll assign some other coder to "help" and that will make the process even longer.

ew for large values of EW
I still think your worst option is to write crap and get it done on time
There will be next time every time

Agreed, agreed, agreed. But I'm not being given a choice. It's like they can't even hear what I'm saying.
"Yeah, we really want the best code possible. So do that for Friday."

Nice to have managers who knows code.

@Robusto The deadline may not change, but you will simply take longer and they will have been warned.

Scoping it down could be an option, pick which report you need the most.

11:02 PM
That's why I suggest a short e-mail that leaves no room for doubt or pressing you on.

Makes me want to call in well: "I'm sorry, I'm not sick anymore, so I won't be in today—or ever again."

Haha.
Perhaps you should do that...

Believe me, I've thought about it.
They also think I can work around the clock. It's just a matter of putting in longer hours, right?

If this weren't you, I would say you seem to have a problem saying "no"!

inorite.

11:07 PM
Know.

@Cerberus maybe he is just an internet tough guy :)

Hehe yes, that must be it...

11:38 PM
@Rob ^ it was a challenge
