A: Autosize GridViewColumns programmatically by content

BenVlodgiI had the same problem, found a good hint on it here. This is how I solved the problem. var theListView = sender as ListView; var theGridView = theListView.View as GridView; foreach (var column in theGridView.Columns) { // Set the Width. Then clear it to cause the autosize. column.Width...

Hi @rolfl ;-P

Any idea what language this uses? We may end up killing the tag.

No, but I can create a new instance of a form and set it's recordset on the fly.
</rubberducking>
@Jamal It's a google sheets formula.

@Jamal It's the cell-formula

@Jamal That looks like google spreadsheet code, like what you put in excel

5:01 PM
I've been back and forth about whether it's on topic or not.

three-times said.

Chat looked like stackoverflow for a bit there, easy question, 3 answers, they say the same thing
3

@CodeX Not anything in particular at the moment

@Pimgd Okay. Pardon my ignorance. ;-)

@Jamal not ignorance, it's one of my peeves of stackoverflow... I try to find a nice question to answer, and by the time I have written my answer, 3 people have already done so and nicer too

5:02 PM
@Phrancis Aw shii, just out of stars right now, TS!

I get most of my SO fun from people answering crappy questions, downvoting them and watching them get upset over their precious reputation

So seriously guys. I don't think it's reviewable, but I can't find a good close reason for it.

Yo mods, this question has no code to be reviewed and the third party links are dead.

Screw answering!

@Pimgd That annoys me, too. I hardly answer on SO nowadays anyway.

5:04 PM
@ckuhn203 which one?

@Pimgd This one.

Q: Averaging a set of percentages between certain important levels

SupuhstarI have a function that averages a set of percentages (in column E) between certain importance levels (column A, in this case between 1000 and 2000, not inclusive because the #000s designate breaks, not values) in a separate spreadsheet ('To Do') and displays that as a percentage. Is there any be...

Well, is no a valid answer?

It could be done differently. I've thought of posting an answer to it, but it wouldn't be a review, it would be me giving him teh codez.

@SimonAndréForsberg Isn't there a 20 page documentation somewhere describing your protocol?

It doesn't belong here, but I can't come up with a good close reason.
I guess the real question is, does a formula count as real working code.

A: Does this question belong on Code Review? Should it go to Code Golf?

Simon André ForsbergFrom the close queue I can see that three people voted to close and three voted to leave open, meaning that the question is gone from the close queue. Even though it has four close votes, I consider it on-topic. Here's why: Your question contains code You wrote that code It looks like actual co...

using that answer

it is actual code, not just some random crap pulled from teh interwebs
(or someone's rear)
they want an improvement...
and it currently works.
So yes it should stay.

@Pimgd um. actually that answer just takes from the help center

Sure
My answer for that question is just "turn it into a macro"
and then remove the duplication

@Pimgd Ok, so how do we review an Formula?
Or to put it differently, how do you review one line of code?

By screaming at the author that putting multiple statements in one line of code is bad

@skiwi Documentation? What's that? Sounds like something you can smoke...

5:13 PM
@Pimgd But it's a formula, you can't.

TO_PERCENT(DIVIDE(SUMIF('To Do'!A3:A, "<2000", 'To Do'!E3:E) - SUMIF('To Do'!A3:A, "<=1000", 'To Do'!E3:E), MAX(COUNTIF('To Do'!A3:A, "<2000") - COUNTIF('To Do'!A3:A, "<=1000"), 1)))

Meta?

@SimonAndréForsberg TS

If that was 1 line of code in a greater review

dammit that's the fourth today..

5:13 PM
you'd shoot it in half for being overly complicated
and it has these nasty constants in there

@SimonAndréForsberg First need to make it before smoking!

@skiwi Good point. Unfortunately, at the moment it's not documented. It's not that hard though it's mostly MOVE (gameid) (x) (y)... I think...

dinneeer
BBQ

@Pimgd But they're not constants per se...

Screw excel formula's, I have hamburgers
@ckuhn203 "<2000" "<=1000"

@SimonAndréForsberg What? Your encoding is wasting my precious bytes!
Though for this it should be perfectly fine

Q: Service class for Archiving and Mirroring Files and Directories

aaronmallenI am writing an application that either mirrors a file/directory into another location or creates a zip file "snap shot" of a file or directory and stores it in another location. The user is able to create "rules" where they define the source file/directory, the destination file/directory and if...

@skiwi If you want another encoding feel free to suggest it and I might implement it in the server. The goal is to support various kinds of formats, such as JSON, my simple method, and more...
It is not meant for real-time communication, only for turn-based games, so I don't think a few bytes here and there are very important

No I think it's fine how it is
Don't make it easier more difficult to implement if not neccessary

@SimonAndréForsberg I figure it's MOVE (gameid) (outerTTTFieldIndex) (innerTTTFieldIndex)
especially when looking at your "replay-sequence"
either way It's TTQW, laters ;)

Well, if you make a move in the top right it's on position (8, 0). X = 8, Y = 0.

5:25 PM
I might implement the format to spam your server :)

So I wouldn't call that "outer" and "inner" TTTFieldIndex

See how hard it crashes

@skiwi That's the spirit!

@Mat'sMug I got a question... SQL Server - look at this and tell me if this would work (specifically the WHERE conditions)
	(SELECT COUNT inc.InjuryType
		FROM inc
		WHERE incType = 'SenttoHospital'
		AND injType.InjuryType <> 'None')

FROM Incidents AS inc
INNER JOIN IncidentTypes AS incType ON inc.IncidenTypeId = incType.IncidentTypeId
INNER JOIN InjuryTypes AS injType ON inc.InjuryTypeId = injType.InjuryTypeId
INNER JOIN Treatments AS treat ON inc.TreatmentTypeId = treat.TreatmentTypeId

@Phrancis Why not use an enum?
Or might not be that smart ;)

5:28 PM
I have no idea how or why do this in SQL...?

What do you think wouldn't work?
Also having incType and injType is dangerous...

^^ yeah that came to mind

Well I think you can define enum-like things in any SQL-based database, like 'a', 'b', 'c'
It's just that incType = 'SenttoHospital' struck me, it will cause trouble if someone mistypes it, whereas an int for example could be more clear
But then you also need some encoding table
I'm not that proficient with designing databases though

WHERE value IN ('a', 'b', 'c')

You can also define it on the column itself
btw I've got an interesting thing to implement soon (tm)
A key consisting of one or more unique numbers

5:32 PM
Lunch time!

enjoy

there are no enums in SQL Server - you can hack it with a check constraint limiting the values which go into a column, or you can have an int column which normalizes to another table of acceptable values

@HassanAlthaf "I'm a self-taught programmer, I can code in HTML, CSS, PHP, jQuery, JavaScript, C#, Python and Pascal. I am currently trying to learn Assembly Language." You might learn the syntax, but it does not seem like you're really learning how to program.

I am new to JavaScript and C#
I'll remove Python and PASCAl, sec.

@SimonAndréForsberg you'd be surprised how much production code I've seen like this

@HassanAlthaf Use the language you know best and learn it well. Then, and only then, I recommend that you move on to the next language.

CSS is a Cascading Style Sheet.

@SimonAndréForsberg Don't stay years with it though! Then it gets hard to agree with concepts in other languages.

It's a style sheet language, says wikipedia. And yes, the only one.

@rolfl future proof - oh, what technology has ever been future proof., I think HTTP/1.1 does a great job?
Just a silly rant about your rant about a question pointing out a rant in an answer to a question :)

@skiwi It does do a great job, but .....
HTTP 2.0 is the next planned version of the HTTP network protocol used by the World Wide Web. It is based on SPDY. HTTP 2.0 is being developed by the Hypertext Transfer Protocol bis (httpbis) working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force. HTTP 2.0 would be the first new version of the HTTP protocol since HTTP 1.1, which was standardized in RFC 2616 in 1999. == Background of HTTP 2.0 == HTTP 2.0 provides an optimized transport for HTTP semantics. While still supporting all the core features of HTTP 1.1, HTTP 2.0 strives to be more efficient in several ways. It is not just HTTP 1.1 and HTTP...

@rolfl I know, I'm glad they are not having no progress for sure
I almost forgot that in my risk analysis, my program will break once HTTP 2.0 rolls out, but it's probably no big deal.
cough

6:22 PM
I'm not looking forward to 2.0... looks like a nightmare to implement. 1.0 was very simple and 1.1 was not much worse

longevity is only one measure for how future-proof something is, and it can be a little misleading at times
by that measure, SMTP could be considered future-proof, though my spam folder says otherwise :)

The thing is, that people have been bamboozled by the accelerated inventiveness in the past century.... and a half
trains were 'future proof'.

I don't know what technologies are really still future proof, C maybe on embedded devices?

I still chuckle at the head of the patent office toward the end of the 19th century saying that everything had been invented

Basically, future proof is a term that makes me think: "fool".

@Pimgd I know they play with Shell Commands

@Phrancis OP is not going to want to use TSQL, but it's absolutely ok to suggest a "better" tool for the job.

@DaggNabbit Yes. That!

I have a feeling it could be reviewed, but I wasn't sure if it was on-topic either when he posted it

7:28 PM
@ckuhn203 I think it's a great answer to the question, maybe I need to add some meat to it later (some more explanation)

@DaggNabbit You're welcome to try, but if your answer starts off with "rewrite it as a macro", then it's a wrong answer IMHO. Because then it just becomes "how to improve spreadsheet formula?" -> turn it into a macro!

@Pimgd i don't think google sheets has macros, they have JavaScript bindings instead

Which wouldn't always be true^^
It's [google-apps-script].

@ckuhn203 true, there's two other answers: "You are doing it wrong, use this instead" and "It's fine as it is"

Technically it's own language built on top of javascript.

but he didn't want that, it sounded like

It sounded to me that he wasn't asking for a review at all, but that's not my concern about it.

Technically speaking, you CAN review it.
But it's not gonna be very meaningful.

@rolfl ???

@Malachi Get the most basic program to work, like an activity that says hello world

But that's my opinion, anyway. I'm pretty new here, and I'm interested whether anyone actually shares my opinion

otherwise I'm just being really wrong and really blind

@Pimgd So, we're back to should we.

@skiwi that is the direction I am heading right now. wish I had my tablet here, I think I have an android book in PDF format

@ckuhn203 Well I dunno about you but I don't wanna do meaningless reviews. That's kinda... meaningless. Pointless. Wasteful.

@skiwi I created an Android app like 3 years ago

@ckuhn203 I was just referencing that last chat message for my new SEDE query.... that points out the most edited questions.

@rolfl I remember some guy editing 10 times their answer in minutes.

Oh, I was looking at the wrong tab in my browser.....

@Malachi It's probably outdated, try to use at least 4.0 API, as everything below is horribly outdated...
Don't expect anything from the documentation.
If there is a new class/way to do things available then you will not find it in the documentation of the old class.

7:35 PM
@Pimgd what if you wrote it like this, does it look more like reviewable code:
=TO_PERCENT(
    DIVIDE(
        SUMIF(
            'To Do'!A3:A,
            "<2000",
            'To Do'!E3:E
        ) - SUMIF(
            'To Do'!A3:A,
            "<=1000",
            'To Do'!E3:E
        ), MAX(
            COUNTIF(
                'To Do'!A3:A,
                "<2000"
            ) - COUNTIF(
                'To Do'!A3:A,
                "<=1000"
            ),
            1
        )
    )
)

@Morwenn I should probably add answers in as well, but, also, remember there's a 5 minute grace windo for any post, and edit.

Those grace edits count as just one revision

I need a basic project to start with so I can search for stuff that I need to finish the simple project, that is how I learn the best I think....

@Malachi Sorry for your loss there.
2
Ok, that sounded harsh, but still true.

@DaggNabbit Looks like, yes. But then you try to make a change and it just.. fails. You can't use the common methods of improving a bit of code - adding, removing or renaming variables, moving statements around...

Android nowadays looks nothing like 2.x

You can't change anything without changing the result

7:38 PM
Shamefully I don't exactly know how Activities and Fragments work together, even after slamming an app together, but you should read on that :)
Unfortunately this is not a rant, just reality :(
About Android Studio, it's probably still in alpha or beta, isn't it?

@Pimgd if that's really true then I guess the answer is "no, there's no better way to do it"
but you could use extra cells as a kind of variable
and then reference them
but yeah I'm not sure if that's appropriate for a code review or not

It is actually asking for "Is there any better way to do this?" which to my eyes is nowhere near "gimme-the-codez". Let's take a look at...

Gee @CaptainObvious, rofl sure is quick.

@SimonAndréForsberg that answer is full of win

I like this. It strikes right at the core of the problem with that question.
"This question appears to be off-topic because we don't know how to review it"

^^ TS

Or, it is off topic unless you are the domain expert,a nd can actually review it

the thing is, it would be hard to review this particular question without (more knowledge of) the actual spreadsheet

@DaggNabbit then OP can be asked to include more context
seeing the worksheet formulae I'm coping with over here, I say yes, it's reviewable!

@Mat'sMug Yes!

7:47 PM
@DaggNabbit Then it's potentially "Unclear what you're asking", but I'll let a sleeping dog zombie lie.

@Mat'sMug RSA

:)
@ckuhn203 if OP doesn't include more context, CV "unclear what you're asking" seems appropriate

@Mat'sMug done

I'm happy with that.

joy!

Crap, SEDE offline for maintenance

Sorry to be a jerk about this one @all. Can't say why, but this one got under my skin bad.

I'm hungry. See you later. I have to pray really hard not to feel the hunger anymore.

or you could eat

@Morwenn pray for pizza

7:52 PM
@DaggNabbit That's actually what I intended to do.

I'd say that's your best bet ;)

Q: Blackjack Strategy

user2926358I am creating a Blackjack simulator in Java in order to better understand the language. I have written the basic strategy section for a player and it is terribly long. Is there a better way to do this other than if/else statements? I know a switch might work but that wouldn't make it much shor...

It's too much to review :(
(for me, that is)

Captain Obvious in 5... 4... 3..

@skiwi yeah I need a new phone bad! I will be taking donations. if anyone wants to donate I will give them my Paypal Email just ping me

@Malachi You... still have an 2.3 phone?

Hmm

@skiwi it's still beta for windows.

7:55 PM
I think I can take part of that one

@skiwi Motorola DroidX2
2.3.5

@Malachi Then expect beta behaviour... I mean real beta behaviour.
Maybe it's improved in the last months though
Do you have an intel CPU?

@skiwi Then post one partial answer. There is plenty of things to be said about that code, so start us of somewhere :)

Huh, I can get a gold badge today.....

@SimonAndréForsberg It would warrant more of a complete rewrite and explain the concepts in that rewrite

7:57 PM
@skiwi I also have a 2.3.5 phone. But I do have a Jelly Bean tablet.
@skiwi yup, that would work too.
@rolfl what now?

@skiwi i5-4570

Copy Editor.
just 13 edits...

If you have an Intel CPU, then you can upgrade the emulator (forgot the actual name, it's something in the bunch of libraries in android package manager), to increase the emulator speed massively

you are catching up to me @rolfl

@rolfl flagged the conversation under my question as "too chatty". The last message is an invitation to chat. Please purge ;)

7:58 PM
@skiwi I would rather test on my slate 7

@Malachi Tablet should be fine as well
Looks a bit less like a phone though.

Q: Trampoline Interceptor

Ben AaronsonAim In C#, the following method will cause a StackOverFlowException if called with parameter 0: int Recurse(int i) { return i<100000 ? Recurse(i+1) : i; } However, this method actually uses tail-call recursion, meaning that if it ever performs a recursive call, that is always the last ope...

I will borrow other peoples phones to test my phone apps if I need too....lol
