Which question @Malachi?

@Malachi I do think your method is a bit overdone, that's why I went with a much simpler approach

You've earned the "Good Question" badge (Question score of 25 or more) for "Did all sites just graduate?".

we need a mod intervention on this one I think

A: Sorting three Decimal values

MalachiI don't know how you are using this information, but I think that you could create a very small table variable or temp table with like one column and then sort and select the information in order. DECLARE @Table1 TABLE ( Dimension VARCHAR(10), Size DECIMAL(4,2) ) INSERT INTO @Table1 ...

@Vogel612 :)

@Mat'sMug I upvoted that one already, but I haven't put a whole lot of brain power into it yet.
I am working on upgrading a Tracking system that I created here at work. they want to be able to E-mail users and stuff and pull information from Active Directory and all sorts of fun stuff. :)
@skiwi at the least @nobody is already coding properly (and using good english).

@Malachi: :P

@Nobody We like having you around!

@Malachi: How long will you be able hold up the ambiguity of sarcasm/irony and honesty?

Do less C++ talk?
IDK I am not good at envisioning the world around me without me because I am so used to experience it with me being there.

I don't talk a whole lot of C++ to begin with. maybe I should learn some so I can talk to @Nobody more.

Yeah, sadly nobody likes C++ anymore.

@skiwi: Did you hit a bus or something?

@skiwi You dead?

I'm tired :o But I guess that's normal after working!

3:38 PM
@Malachi Now for real: That was a joke (at least the English part), wasn't it?

@SimonAndréForsberg What do you think about the GUI below here?
For a GUI noob

@Nobody they way it was written, if I wasn't using a proper noun and I actually meant "nobody" it would not have been phrased correctly, so yes.

@skiwi Are you asking me about GUI advice?

@SimonAndréForsberg I guess I just did.

@skiwi Have you already forgot about this?
20 hours ago, by Simon André Forsberg
user image

3:44 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg I can take a look at it if you can share it quite easily?

@skiwi Been meaning to post that entire project to GitHub anyway

I also spotted a fun job at work today..
There are already people who test the GUI/website after every update
But they're alsow orking on a mobile version... Which needs to be tested... on a tablet.
Damn typos... They always get me.

Anyone seen this?
Free microsoft E-books on a ton of subjects.

@SimonAndréForsberg Is it compilable code or does it come with (no offence) hundred dependencies?

3:52 PM
@skiwi The entire code is using maven, so if you're running Maven I believe it's compilable. It does use quite a lot of dependencies though.

And do you want Travis integration yet?

@skiwi you can test the FXML itself with Scene Builder 2.0 though, it has a "Preview" option
@skiwi I'm not sure if I want Travis or not

Sometimes there's controller tweaks needed as well
and okay
I guess this is my chance to do a pull request!
You shouldn't take this as advice... but I've been using this motto whenever I couldn't get the GUI right:
If it doesn't work, wrap it in an AnchorPane!
2

@skiwi Sounds like advice a motto worth to remember star.

@JohnP Downloading now ;) thanks

@SimonAndréForsberg: You could have improved the title as well

I did improve the title. @Nobody wanted me to improve it more, apparently.

Your tag duplicates some of the title so the title could be shortened

@CodeX No thanks, I got all the ebooks I need for now. (I.e. Java Concurrency in Practice, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, and Effective Java)

Q: For each loop without null check java

HumdingerA common idiom I often see in java is the following: if (list != null) { for (item i : list) { if (i != null) { doStuff(i); } } } My question is two fold. First, to me this is a code smell due to the triple nesting, does this smell to you? Second, what would be a bet...

@SimonAndréForsberg: The Jamalizer himself didn't think of it as well

@Nobody Shame on him.

@SimonAndréForsberg Your project uses Java 8, please?

@skiwi Of course. What else is there?

@skiwi Not sure which version of JavaFX I use. The one bundled with Java 8. Isn't it JavaFX 8 ?

can someone explain to me what this could do when put in a form? <script>alert("XSS!");</script>
I know it does a pop-up
How could it be used maliciously?

@CodeX What if changed the location of the page?
Cross-site scripting (XSS) is a type of computer security vulnerability typically found in Web applications. XSS enables attackers to inject client-side script into Web pages viewed by other users. A cross-site scripting vulnerability may be used by attackers to bypass access controls such as the same origin policy. Cross-site scripting carried out on websites accounted for roughly 84% of all security vulnerabilities documented by Symantec as of 2007. Their effect may range from a petty nuisance to a significant security risk, depending on the sensitivity of the data handled by the vulnera...

^^ Excellent computerphile explanation of a "self-tweeting tweet" which used XSS.

@CodeX it's not the alert that's malicious, the alert is just there to prove that you were able to run a script. From there, you have to get creative.

This could be easily implemented in any <a href ?

Imagine doing it on a payment confirmation page, for example.

5:07 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg That's a really good one.

I have actually done XSS on a payment confirmation page, because we had a requirement that the user fill out a survey at that point, and it needed to be integrated into the payment processor's page. It didn't do anything malicious, but it could have.

Watching Now!
So as long as i dont return the data directly to the page all is well?

@CodeX Are you waiting for more reviews for this question?

@AlexL Nope, all sorted now thanks
I still dont know how it affects other users.. confused :/
Oh, i understand persistent XSS
Non-persistent is more of a break / hack something tool?
persistent is used within a system to affect its use?

@SimonAndréForsberg Hm? Wow, I thought even those with mod tools can see deleted posts that are not on a user's profile/

@CodeX persistent xss just means storing something on the web server instead of a one-shot deal. Things like those facebook "viruses" that used to go around.

I guess results don't show up for others if you use a user's ID as a search query.

@CodeX Non-persistent: one time only, usually only one victim. persistent: it stays on the site, posing a threat to multiple people

5:39 PM
@DaggNabbit Suddenly everything seems very unsafe

@Jamal well that's clearly NAA.

@AlexL Got it, think i know how to prevent that

@CodeX Everything is unsafe xD

@CodeX the funny thing to me is that people worry about things like social networks instead of things like payment processors.
it's the things everyone assumes are secure that aren't

5:40 PM
Social networks make more money then payment processors?

yes but social networks don't generally provide you an avenue for cleaning someone out

@Jamal Well that too... And that's actually a JDQ that I have missed completely.

@DaggNabbit So XSS is potentially colon hydrotherapy..

Q: Converting string array to string (and vice-versa) for storing via XML

ub3rst4rI'm using XML to store data and I need to store a string array in it. The best way (that I can think of) to store a string array is by converting it to a single string. A: What is the worst real-world macros/pre-processor abuse you've ever come across?

user78859From memory, it looked something like this: #define RETURN(result) return (result);} int myfunction1(args) { int x = 0; // do something RETURN(x) int myfunction2(args) { int y = 0; // do something RETURN(y) int myfunction3(args) { int z = 0; // do something ...

I think programmers (myself included) would be a lot more fit if we all did 10 pushups every time a compiler found an error in our code. This might also reduce the occurrence of testing by compilation. — MikeyB Jun 25 '09 at 19:52

Ouch, that's tricky with Java... As IDE's nowadays tend to do some syntax checking ('compiling') on the fly, it's not really compiling, so they don't count, right?

@Yuushi Btw, I don't know if you follow The Voice Australia or not, but I do. I gotta say there's some really awesome talent in Australia. Although it was sad to see my favorite - Sabrina - leave the show in the last episode :(

@SimonAndréForsberg Nah, not really my thing. I don't really watch Australian television at all :/

@Yuushi I probably watch more Australian television than Swedish television.

11:18 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Oh? What else do you watch?

11:28 PM
@Yuushi Australian TV-shows: The Voice AU and The Voice Kids AU. Swedish TV-shows: None :)

Good music for coding: di.fm/cosmicdowntempo

@skiwi Do we really need the tag? Isn't enough?

@Phrancis ..lol :)

Actually, I listen to a lot more Swedish bands than Australian bands :P

Q: Looking for feedback on code that I wrote involving posix, semaphores, and locks

AaronI am trying to get over my fear of multi threading programing and teaching myself to code using posix. I wrote a small version of the consumer producer problem. I am hoping I can get some feedback if it works ( I think it does, traced the threads when my for loop was at 20 and it made sense) an...

Q: Simple calculator, but I think it's inefficient

Manny MengI have a simple calculator program that needs some reviewing. Is this as efficient as it can get, or is there a better way? public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("Welcome to the Calculator!"); do { System.out.println(...

11:31 PM
@Yuushi Perhaps you should move to Sweden and I to Australia?
@CaptainObvious Don't post Java questions when I'm sleepy!

@SimonAndréForsberg Haha, perhaps!

@CaptainObvious double dou = x;. Lovely :)

^^ wtf
Thought double is supposed to be a number... right?

@Mat'sMug Do I smell Scottish notation?

2 byte integer or something

11:33 PM
I better go to bed now so that I can wake up fresh and energetic tomorrow. Night folks, TTGTB

@SimonAndréForsberg night

Bye @SimonAndréForsberg

Looks like OP ran out of letters for single-letter vars, ...so he used some 2-letter vars!
2
Good night @simon!

a, b, c, ..., aa, ab, ac ...

^^ that's original.

11:34 PM
Excel-notation?
2

seems like the logical progression for 1 char to 2 char names, no?

totally :)

Why in the world would you need so many variables is what I'm curious about

Small point in defence of the OP, I've personally mentored his computing class, and I can confirm that the teacher is from another era. Hungarian Notation is but one of his sins, and he has enforced his coding peculiarities onto the whole class. — Leo King 2 hours ago

^^ comment of the day for me :)

Hungarian notation needs to die a horrible, flaming death

11:38 PM
I think it's been agonizing for about a decade..
yet it's still alive :/

how do you add a paypal donate button to your profile? does anyone know?

declare a varchar = 'Indeed.'

1 more question and its creator gets a [badge:taxonomist]!

@Phrancis you posted on the wrong question.

Shit
Hold that thought lol

11:42 PM
you want this one

Q: Sorting three Decimal values

BenVlodgiI have been given three values. @lLength, @lWidth, @lHeight. I need to take these DECIMAL(4,2) values and set the values of @lMax, @lMid, @lMin with the values I've been given in order of value. So which ever value of Length, Width or Height is the greatest will be stored in Max, and the second c...

if there's more than just a few records, I'd think a CTE would be more efficient than a table variable. but I can't say for sure.

> @ckuhn203 Even better yet would be to declare it as an int and let the RDBMS implicitly cast it so you don't have to later
^^ I'm not sure this is optimal for efficiency
2

I don't like implicit stuff

Not a big fan of making SQL guess

11:50 PM
too VB-ish

I am going to run out of stars

damn

I do think that @ckuhn203 set-based approach is really good though, indeed, ugly. Do the whole dataset at once instead of loop through each record in what amounts to be essentially a cursor. I need to get out of that habit too.

I just didn't want to hard-code the field's structure, because I haven't yet encountered them, but I know there are other instances of such delimited size-level data elsewhere that I'm going to need to "parse", ...and the field size isn't necessarily consistent between tables.
^^ , I know.

Right
You better get a nice bonus after you're done with this

11:57 PM
oh I will ;)
it's in the contract!

Um. Workbench won't execute this script...

it's T-SQL
