@allquixotic thats true, this 100*C as reflected by some sencor in soma area of these chips is not consistant with MTBF statistics collected for loads of general electronics and microprocessors. In searching for the info , about 80* C seemed to be the breaking point where the MTBF graphs start going downhill. While I have run CPU for weeks full load throttling at 100, the info suggests that 80 should be the desired max.
I think these people claiming the stuff can make it to 100* know thier own stuff well, but i need Years and years of service, without a problem. I do not think that letting this stuff get to 100*C covers that.

Bob
@Psycogeek I thought modern CPUs had a thermal shutdown at about 100
maybe up to 110
> The i7-3770k has a Tjmax of 105c
that's absolute max before it automatically shuts down
of course, it decreases lietime to get close to max
if you're running at 100, you come pretty close to auto-shutdown, which is definitely bad

12:56 AM
The haswell throttled and self cooled (sort of) thanks to the trottling, then it just kept going. weeks of that doing what looked just like intel stepping, stepping down from the overlcok or even lower rarely to stay under this max temp.

Bob
@Psycogeek yea, they do a lot of stuff auto to protect themselves now
some people will complain, but better than more people complaining about it frying itself

@Bob is your avatar image a firefox?

naw ;p
its a regular fox.

ME WANTS!

@Enkouyami: SU, SF and SO are the originals. UL and so on came later

My wife is allergic to regular cats =/

sensible woman.

@JourneymanGeek I guess at least one of the couple has to be.
If it wasn't for her, there'd be a new gadget each month and then I would go "what do you mean by supermarket mon...OH"
there'd. I like how it sounds. In my mind I say it using a monocle and a top hat.

Yessir, those are some good English fellows, indeed.

2 hours later…
3:13 AM
Hohoho!
Anyone worked by contact here?

4:13 AM
@MichaelFrank Dawngate is so infuriating. God damn it. Hour long game, we successfully defended and then killed para, and my fucking game froze. Had to restart the game. By the time I got back I was dead and they were killing our guardian.

that sucks :(
had two DCs today.

Why do I spend an hour playing for 40 destiny? I mean... it's just stupid. The whole concept of the game. It's not even fun anymore.

4:31 AM
@allquixotic Can't pause it ?

@HackToHell No, this isn't some weaksauce DOTA game.

You now what would be handy? A userscript that adds a counter to form fields that shows how many characters you have typed in. At least, it would be handy for me. Anyone seen one?

4:47 AM
Is it okay to notify your boss 5 days earlier that you are leaving if you work by contract?

4:59 AM
@MichaelFrank Then loose when someone DCs or lags
Noob EA

@Paul like for password entry, soes you know if you typed the whole thing or not? a Little popup windows upper right of the box like a 3rd party spell checker would use.
@Boris_yo standard business stuff in the US often apply the words "2 week notice" I guess it is some common time expected to fire or quit a job? wikihow.com/Write-a-Two-Weeks-Notice

@Boris_yo What does your contract say?
If you're on contract, then your exit clause should be written in.

5:25 AM
@Psycogeek Yeah exactly, but for any field. One reason is I am using a CMS to manage web content, and would like content editors to see a character count as they type, so they keep it within limits

Q: XYZ 3D-chart in Excel

SoftTimurI have a table of data as follows: X Y Z N1 2 5 6 N2 2 7 8 N3 0 1 2 N4 0 4 5 N5 9 10 10 N6 4 9 9 N7 0 2 4 N8 0 7 8 N9 0 7 8 Now I would like to make a 3D-chart, whose 3 axes are X, Y and Z. For each axe, the labels are 0, 1, 2, 3, ..., 10. So...

@osimerpothe: meh, spamming your questions is considered impolite
if you ABSOLUTELY need an answer, consider a bounty

Sorry
I can bounty it after two days

YES. FINALLY SHOT SOMEONE!
There's something oddly buggy about the pistols in watchdogs, but the machine guns work fine.

@Paul Well i think there might be something from a web search. I used the commonly used terms "word count" and charachter count , when that went badly i added the 3rd party small program search term "freeware" :-) google.com/… I saw some thing ?? enso words a spell checker that does counts?
Without a good Software recommendation, (hey isn't there a site for that:) you might find something trial and fail style.
There was also lots of hits on code, at that Stack exchange place, for wedging into web pages and using java. so it looks like it could be simply created ? stackoverflow.com/questions/17674665/…

@Psycogeek Thanks, yeah there are tons of things that will count characters, what I am after is a userscript that will add character counts to form fields in websites. I figure I'll find a jquery script and do it myself.

@Paul Oh so you specifically do want it like on the Server side for web pages? not like the client side?

6:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek They definitely followed the Assassin's Creed approach of offering you a million twisty side missions, all alike, so that you lose interest in anything but the main campaign

@Psycogeek No, I do want it client side, but a userscript (like a greasemonkey script)

@Paul: I find it fun, other than the invasions, which I haven't quite gotten the hang od

@JourneymanGeek What are they? Oh, the virtual alien things?

naw, the one in which another player hacks you

6:09 AM
Oh right

I'm barely into the first act though, JUST met the hacker

I had one of those, but never again (I didn't get the hang of it either).

and heh, the side missions remind me of SR

Yeah

SPIDERTANK SPIDERTANK WRECKING CHICAGO LIKE A SPIDERTANK CAN
Have you guys tried out the ctOS app for android? It's amazing.
You can create invasions from your phone.

6:22 AM
@Paul Ahh, well the reason i was thinking 3rd party windows thing, is because they can work anyfreakingwhere, so they work just as well in a browser. Tinyspell is pretty cool , sorta follows the mouse around :-) be that the web or anywhere else.
If they had tossed a count into such a thing, it would pull it off.

not yet ;p
wait. did you say... spidertank?

TACHIKOMA!

bhagwad.com/blog/2010/technology/… this guy looks like he has word&char count in browser script covered well too
There is like thousands of these word count things, all because some Professor said "write a 500 word essay on. . ." And students stop at 501 :-)

6:44 AM
Bleh accidentally updates utorrent
Why the fuck is it so slow

@Psycogeek Heh yeah. Thanks!

7:12 AM
Hello
I need some information related to Hardware configuration for development machine
what is difference between Intel H81 chipset and Intel Q87 chipset ?

which is good for usage ? I am individual developer

Beats me. USUALLY a chipset isn't that important outside support for say, onboard graphics. Its a better idea to pick a motherboard that meets your needs than worry about that
Q series is better if you need centralised management. H series ought to be alright
Either is probably 'good for usage'. If you're building a box though, I'd probably look at a few guides to get a feel of things

8:13 AM
hm. Speakers in your monitor suck
(unplugged the regular ones, needed the socket for the aircooler.)

Bob
9:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek Don't forget 81 vs 87. Usually the higher ones digit has more SATA ports (and other I/O, e.g. USB & PCIe)

@Bob hence me telling him to look at the motherboard as a whole.

9:32 AM
Bleh, @allquixotic your bad luck jumped here
I lost 7 matches -_-

Q: Why does an HDD vibrate?

biertjeJust curious, maybe it's a stupid question but i'd like to know why the following happens: Even though a hdd platter is extremely well balanced/aligned, it still buzzes and vibrates when spinning. A hdd platter must be produced with an almost zero tolerance, it's almost perfectly round and flat s...

Things i didnt need to know . . . but , lets assume that there is a little bit of imbalance in these things, why is the vibration almost the same for each of them? Even say an older one.
the same model of drives, all 8 of them will vibrate close enough to the same that i could not tell if one was more offbalanced.
Why do like motors in general vibrate so much. The math is wrong , i tell ya, the reason were not leaving this galexy , its the bloody math.

11:03 AM
Woooo. Finally got my old PC parts put together into a secondary machine.

Guess what part of a computer this thing in the picture is ^

@Psycogeek Looks like the bottom plate for a laptop.

2nd clue it is a functioning part of a computer (if i said that right) not a frame piece.

I can't tell what that is...

Chassis

11:13 AM
Memory card reader?

@MichaelFrank I don't think it's binding contract. It has just mentioned period of work. But from ethical point of view, is it okay to "fire your boss" 5 days before disappearing?

3rd clue it aparentally is 1 meter wide and 2 meters tall, so like many pictures without a referance , i guess this one is dang big.

@Psycogeek How about paying me for guessing?

@Boris_yo I'm not a lawyer, but aren't all contracts binding? Isn't that the idea of a contract?

@Boris_yo Ok your first guess was wrong, your at =$5 :-)

11:20 AM
@MichaelFrank I think it must explicitly state this and potential penalties to be incurred?

last clue it is 24bit with parity
it is part of a "Number One Electronic Switching System" from the 1970s telephone switching computer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1ESS_switch ferrite memory. sort of a "core memory"
I was like WTF is that, 1 Bit per hole.

@Psycogeek Do I look like have been born after 70s?

""When a critical hardware failure in the processor or peripheral units occurred, such as both controllers of a line switch frame failing and unable to receive orders, the machine would stop connecting calls and go into a "phase of memory regeneration", "phase of reinitialization", or "Phase" for short. The Phases were known as Phase 1,2,4 or 5. Lesser phases only cleared the call registers of calls that were in an unstable state that is not yet connected, and took less time""
"During a Phase, the system, normally roaring with the sound of relays operating and releasing, would go quiet as no relays were getting orders. The Teletype Model 35 would ring its bell and print a series of P's while the phase lasted. For Central office staff this could be a scary time as seconds and then perhaps minutes passed while they knew subscribers who picked up their phones would get dead silence until the phase was over.
so the thing would do a 404 long before the web existed :-)

11:52 AM
@Boris_yo I am not quite sure, if we turn your gravitar 90 degrees would it look like this

Neat. :p
i need to give that a look when I get home.

A: Where is Developer Command Prompt for VS2013?

WiredPrairieFor some reason, it doesn't properly add an icon when running Windows 8+. Here's how I solved it: Using Windows Explorer, navigate to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Visual Studio 2013 In that folder, you'll see a shortcut named Visual Studio Tools that maps to (assuming...

VS2013.
Why is VS2013 so... incompatible... with Win8? O_O

HAH
took something like dozen attempts to finish a mission
cause some idiot kept blowing up the guys I was supposed to merely maim

2:10 PM
@Bob I... participated. >_> Later. But someone else started it!
and I removed a lot of my stars anyway

Bob
lol

(Watch dogs. I think it was a gang-stronghold mission. On top of a shopping center ;p)

2:29 PM
@Bob Heh, cool! Broadwell is going to be using the 9 series chipsets. So if you buy a Z97 and a Haswell Refresh today, you could sell your HSR CPU and keep your mobo and upgrade to Broadwell.

Bob
@allquixotic But the CPU is the part I'd want to keep :P

No new platform (mobo) enhancements for Broadwell is kind of disappointing, but on the other hand, Z97 just came out...

Bob
@allquixotic Weird, I would've expected compatibility from 9x, but not this.

It's a real shame that an IVB CPU doesn't use a compatible socket with Z97. I could upgrade my mobo now, and my CPU later :P

Bob
@allquixotic Ya, that's what I would've liked to do :P

2:32 PM
The ticks usually keep the platform of the previous gen, don't they? IVB was a bit of an exception, I guess because the 6-series chipsets were a bit of a redheaded stepchild
IVB was heralded as a "tick-plus"... looks like Broadwell might be a regular old tick.
the plus was bringing higher memory clocks to the mainstream chipsets, I think.
and SATA 6 gb/s and USB 3.0

Bob
@allquixotic Wait, that means probably no DDR4?

correct D:

Bob
Gah.

my guess is, DDR4 will be on Haswell-E in 2015, followed by Broadwell+1 (the tock after Broadwell -- Skymont? I don't recall) in 2016

Bob
Why can't all this line up so I don't end up buying soon-to-be-incompatible parts for my next upgrade? :(
And then there's crap like this arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23145&pid=56157&p=product

Bob
$280 mobo, only 4 SATA ports. Fail.

yup, Haswell-E is DDR4. so, there's no way the mainstream chips are going to see DDR4 until at least a year after Haswell-E lands
Oh. It's sky lake that succeeds Broadwell.
Skylake is the codename for a processor microarchitecture to be developed by Intel as the successor to the Broadwell architecture. Skylake will use the 14 nm manufacturing process. The first Skylake processors will be desktop Core i5 and Core i7 parts, codenamed Skylake-S. All processors at time of release will be locked. Skylake will be used in conjunction with Intel 100 Series chipsets, also known as Sunrise Point. Architecture * 14 nm manufacturing process * LGA 1151 socket * Z107 chipset (Sunrise Point) * TDP up to 95 W (LGA 1151) * Support for both DDR3 SDRAM and DDR4 SDRAM i...

Bob
A good mobo will be at least $200 :(

GAAAH Skylake is using another new socket!
Haswell/Broadwell = LGA 1150

Bob
@allquixotic ...fuckit. I give up.

2:40 PM
Skylake = LGA 1151

didn't intel have one socket type a generation at one point?

I guess the thing to do for future proofing would've been to upgrade to Haswell when it was new, then you could keep your mobo (with a firmware update) and jump to Broadwell without changing your chipset
assuming you were ok with the features of the Z87 platform, I mean
if you upgrade to the Broadwell platform, you'll have to ditch the mobo the next time you want to up your CPU
then again, I upped into Ivy, and Ivy's socket is the last gen that uses that socket, so I can't up to Haswell

Bob
@allquixotic as I said, I don't do CPU upgrades
or at least I don't want to

seems like I'm on an upgrade cadence that puts me on the back foot each time, not being able to upgrade to the next gen

Bob
the CPU just costs too damn much

2:43 PM
heh

Bob
I'd actually rather get the latest/last CPU for a socket

in that case, going with the tick is probably a good idea :P and we'd then both be on the same "schedule" per se

Bob
mhm
now if only I could find a good mobo -_-

Socket-compatible: Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge; Has well and Broad well; Sky lake and Cannon lake... I see a pattern

Bob
who the fuck puts PCIe x4 into an x16 slot and has it share bandwidth with the x1 slots?
Gigabyte, apparently.

2:44 PM
I guess if you want to wait for them to work out the new microarch bugs and fix the redheaded stepchild of the first-gen platform for the new microarch, you always upgrade to the tick
Ivy -> Broadwell would be exactly that for me

Bob
@allquixotic ya. going with SDB was... well, not really a bad choice, the CPU is fine for me, but the P67 was just stupid.

though admittedly I kind of downgraded a bit in terms of TDP and "product line" when I went from my X59 chipset (Nehalem launched to the desktop as an enthusiast part FIRST, so I grabbed that; DDR3 was brand new) to Ivy

Bob
I could see myself using the i7-2600 in 5 years without many issues

@Bob in that case, you can "straighten out" your upgrade cadence by landing on Broadwell -- then you can either sit tight until Cannonlake, or sit until the next tick after that
I've been on the tick cadence all along :P

Bob
Oh look a mobo that supports SLI-- WHY DOES IT HAVE A PCIe x8

2:47 PM
er
thats normal

Bob
seriously, why the hell is 2x PCIE x16 so rare

you usually run both cards at pci-e x8

my mobo has three PCIe x16 ports; two of them can do PCIe 3.0, one of them PCIe 2.1... aside from that, it has two regular PCI slots and two PCIe 3.0 x4 slots :P

@allquixotic: I'm on a 5-7 year cycle at the moment. So... its totally fucked up ;p

@JourneymanGeek my two Radeons are both running at full PCIe 3.0 x16

2:48 PM
and don't forget each generation of PCIe is twice as fast as the previous ones.
@allquixotic: o0

the power saving feature of the GPU/mobo will negotiate down to PCIe 1.1 x1 when the card is idle or doing 2D; PCIe 2.0 x8 when watching video or doing significant desktop compositing (aero stuff); and all the way up to PCIe 3.0 x16 when gaming

Q: What are the performance differences between PCI-Express x16 and x4

CestarianI have two PCI-Express x16 slots on my motherboard, but one of them only has x4 bandwidth. For passing through my graphics card to a virtual machine I need to use both slots and unfortunately, the easiest way for me to achieve that is putting the stronger card in the x4 slot as that is by defau...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek urgh. I forgot about CPU limitations.

and video cards don't generally saturate their buses

Bob
@allquixotic apparently the i7-3770 only has 16 PCIe lanes :\

2:59 PM
@Bob looks like you're right, but I think the Z77 chipset actually supplies additional lanes for the peripherals
notice: the big x16 slots go straight to the CPU, but then there are additional PCIe 2.0 slots provided by the chipset
the chipset also supports an additional lane for the onboard GbE controller
looks like I'm using every single PCIe lane available on my platform :P
well. not quite.
the SoundBlaster Z is only using x1 (that's all it requires)

sound cards tend to need very little bandwidth

the RAID card is using 4 out of the 8 available PCIe 2.0 lanes on the PCH though

most audiophile ones are USB 1.1 ;p

wohoo I can now fly in terraria

I think, unless you're doing OpenCL, probably the 7970s can't max out a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface
they're designed to work fine on PCIe 2.0 x16, which is close in perf to 3.0 x8
I think they're making the graphics such high fidelity in Star Citizen that it'll only run well (really, really well I mean) on a single-GPU + mainstream CPU + mainstream mobo in 2016 or so :P Skylake or Cannonlake with whatever Nvidia GTX 980 or Radeon R9 480X happens to be around

3:10 PM
so its the new crysis? ;p

@JourneymanGeek you could say that :< except much cooler

Bob
...wow
default file browser won't let me change file extensions on my phone
wtf

great. I have an Adreno in my phone AND my tablet.
guess I won't be installing any OpenGL using apps in the near future

Bob
@allquixotic aka a new root exploit method :P
I have the QC/Adreno variant of the S4 :\

@Bob \o/
except I don't need root, unless I could somehow use root to fix my damn bluetooth problems

Bob
3:16 PM
Considering I don't even have 4.4 yet, I might see a patch in, say, 2017

Oh cool, I have a Possesed Item that rarely drops ! yipeee

@Bob at this point, I'd be happy just to find a bootloader unlock mechanism so I could flash back to the stock 4.2.2 firmware (Jellybean) which had no such problems and better battery life to boot
everyone fucks up an update now and again -- KitKat, at least until 4.4.3 or so, is pretty fucked up. Google did a Vista
Jellybean was a WinXP though: everyone loves it and it'll probably continue to be used for a long time

Bob
@HackToHell there's no such thing as a "possessed item"
It is literally a Possessed Hatchet; "possessed" isn't a modifier

It's not a quality o0 ?
Oh ok.

Bob
You reforge it to godly
it's also not that rare
...nor that powerful
decent midgame, but endgame weapons are far better

3:21 PM
Okay, it can one hit kill pretty much any thing that comes at me.

Bob
I guess you're pre-hardmode
hardmode enemies... it's a pretty big difference
heh. @allquixotic this one might be what I'm looking for: arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23145&pid=56150&p=product
bit pricey though

@Bob I think so.
How long does night last ?

Bob
@HackToHell about 9 hours (9 minutes real)

okay

Bob
hm. almost. that asus mobo is a little short on the rear USB ports :(

3:28 PM
@Bob ugh, Z97 is still limited to dual x8. Can't do dual x16 pcie 3.0 :/
even with Broadwell, I guess? :/

Bob
@allquixotic well, haswell is still 16 lanes max

> CPU: Intel® Socket 1150 for the 5th/New 4th/4th Generation Coreâ„¢ i7/Coreâ„¢ i5/Coreâ„¢ i3/Pentium®/Celeron® Processors
lol @ the branding
"New 4th Generation Core i7"
@Bob eh. that sucks. I wonder how much it would be to buy a "low-end" (if that even makes any sense to call it that) Haswell-E CPU + mobo when it lands later this year?
the -E definitely has (way) more PCIe lanes

Bob
wut.
> It was said that Broadwell would only offer 4 PCIe 2.0 lanes.
random rumors yay

Skylake is said to have 20 PCIe 3.0 lanes, which is nice.

Bob
heh, if they actually limited it to four lanes, that might be what AMD needs to come back :P

3:30 PM
but Haswell-E will have 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes

Bob
@allquixotic o.O

@Bob yeah, you make those eyes, but the price will make your eyes do this: O_____O
also, 22nm Haswell-E is going to be a huge, hot, power-hungry chip :/
pretty sure I won't have to upgrade my Corsair AX1200 PSU any time soon, not even with Haswell-E, but I may have to get a bigger case or something

Bob
ah, this looks closer to what I want, with more USB ports: arc.com.au/pub.php?gid=23145&pid=56154&p=product
but a second GPU will cover the PCIe 2.0 slot -_-
what I really want is a combination of these mobos
ffs
also, asus has far too many different mobos with minor differences

agreed. and ASUS stops maintaining the BIOS updates after about a year and a half
wonder if any other vendors do it for longer

Bob
that's my current desktop mobo

3:39 PM
I wonder if Asus supports their "workstation" mobos for longer
Haswell-E workstation mobo is a distinct possibility :P

Bob
again a bit lacking in rear USB ports

if I went with an -E, I would actually forego getting the fastest available processor for once

Bob
but 10 SATA ports O_O
and dual-GbE-LAN
O_O

for Ivy-E, the i7-4930K is about half the price of the i7-4960X, with the same number of cores, a very similar CPU freq, 4/5ths the amount of cache, the same TDP, and the same memory and PCIe support.
I could get the Haswell-E equivalent "mid-range" proc, and it would still run circles around the 3770K
and give me enough lanes for 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 cards
the "K" means it has an unlocked multiplier anyway, so I could experiment with maybe "overclocking" it up to the "X" model's speed
damn.
only the top-end Has-E will have 8 cores :(
the lower end ones have 6 :(
lol

Bob
ok
that Asrock is damn near perfect :D
hm
I wonder what makes the more expensive Extreme6 better than the cheaper Extreme4
there's the dual-LAN
eh, that's for another day. when Broadwell is actually out and I have a bit more money to spare :P

3:51 PM
yea

4:14 PM

5:04 PM
Yeah lol

@HackToHell udates? I guess UdaterUI.exe from McAfee can do it
they can't even spell updater correctly

@allquixotic Why would you need dual x16 PCI-e v3?
V2 x8 is fast enough for a GPU.

Cool, a new watch :O

the HD7970 can exceed the bandwidth of PCIe 2.0 x16 under certain circumstances, as well as PCIe 3.0 x8. I don't think it can max out PCIe 3.0 x16.
3.0 x8 is ever so slightly slower than 2.0 x16.

@random for a valued contributor like harrymc, wouldn't a superping have sufficed? has he (or anyone else, for that matter) ever been warned about this behavior before? As @JourneymanGeek once said about an unrelated matter, "The first we knew of this was the bot getting suspended - which is a tiny bit like getting a telegram delivered through the roof by a swat team. "
I find that you get a lot more with honey than with vinegar. It looks like you've significantly chilled the contributions of one of SU's highest rep users. It is possible (especially for diamond moderators) to communicate with other users on SU in ways that don't involve banning them from entire swaths of the website's functionality.
I disagree with this action. I think it's much too harsh. Nobody ever looks at tag wikis anyway! It's such a minor "offense" (if you can call it that). It's much more constructive for something like this to simply make a meta post instructing the entire community (not just harrymc) that we want to improve tag wikis and make them more useful by declining this type of edit. Then superping people who don't see or ignore the meta post. THEN suspend them, if they ignore your superping.
I agree with what you want to do to improve tag wikis (or more to the point, what you want to prevent people from doing to not improve tag wikis), but I think the method you've chosen to implement it is going to cause much more strife and pushback than necessary.
cc @OliverSalzburg @slhck @JourneymanGeek @Mokubai and other mods.

@allquixotic Evidence shows that harrymc doesn't acknowledge pings

@allquixotic You don't get any special treatment just because you answer a lot of bountied questions
And being banned from reviews is just as harsh of a punishment as being banned from handling flags or something
Also, don't question the mods, or you're next!!!

@OliverSalzburg Still, it's unfortunate that the "memo" about this issue is being delivered by way of harrymc asking a meta post about him being banned from the review queue. Some people (like me....) read the featured posts on meta regularly, and would see anything related to this "advisory" asked as a question and happily take it into account.

Q: Can we please have better tag wiki excerpts?

DMA57361Today someone proposed lots of tag wiki excerpts edits that all followed the form: Questions about <tag-name>, <description of object>. Why do we need the Questions about element? We don't, it consumes the limited excerpt space and adds nothing. On closer inspection of the tag list it seem...

@OliverSalzburg I love it. Your seamless transition from serious to sarcastic almost threw me for a loop. Almost.
....not quite ;-)

6:22 PM
@allquixotic I get your point, I just have the feeling that this topic has come up in the past already

Do you also need to have a meta post about not approving edits to answers that add spam links? Because that happens.

Q: If there is no tag wiki for a tag yet, is it okay to copy the introduction from Wikipedia?

Oliver SalzburgI had just noticed that the utorrent tag has no description or excerpt. So I was wondering if I could/should just copy the introduction text from Wikipedia. I don't see how I could give a better description of the application that what's written in the article. I assumed simply copying content f...

Ah, that's where the feeling is coming from ;)

Note that copying without attribution also violates Wikipedia's license and therefore your agreement with Stack Exchange. If the SE team had balls, they'd kick the users who do this (quite a few, unfortunately) from the network. — Daniel Beck ♦ Feb 2 '12 at 16:19
That's more important than "it's frowned upon" or any of that other nonsense. Just come out and say it already! It violates the license of Wikipedia to not attribute the source. And most of these don't attribute.

Wow, @random with the speed-edit on that one

Hmm: So if the tag wiki suggested edit (1) adds copypasta from wikipedia; (2) attributes the source; and (3) contains info about how to use the tag on SU; then it's fine?

6:27 PM
Personally would reject if it includes 1 and 2

Is this a serious enough offense that we should flag offending suggested edits for moderator attention, or do we just reject them?
If you reject it, isn't it still possible that enough people might accept it that it would get merged into the tag wiki anyway?

Not if a moderator rejects it

!! s/you/a non-diamond moderator/

@allquixotic If a non-diamond moderator reject it, isn't it still possible that enough people might accept it that it would get merged into the tag wiki anyway? (source)

You can't currently flag suggested edits
If they are overruled, yes

6:31 PM
Oh. That's... interesting. Hm. Most other stuff can get flagged. :P Ah well... I guess you could flag the wiki itself if it turns out that it gets merged anyway...

You can't flag the wiki either

O_O
hmm. I guess enforcement is entirely up to the mods noticing this behavior then, if there's no way for the rest of us to bring it to your attention when we see it

You can create a meta post about it, which is basically the same thing

yeah, close enough
OK, I'm off that topic now... I'm sure people will get back from lunch/sleep/whatever and weigh in on it later as they see fit
probably most of the views coming from people who edited the tag wiki... I'm going to check MSE to see what the latest status is on the meta Qs about eliminating the worthless things in the first place

@allquixotic You mean eliminating tag wikis?

6:54 PM
@OliverSalzburg yeah
a lot of huffing and puffing to maintain them (or not maintain them and let them languish as spam-ridden, poorly-reviewed, unattributed wikipedia copypastas) and nobody ever looks at them
almost 3800 questions asked about ssh and only 163 views over 3 years? in what world is this worth even keeping on the site?
3800 questions == probably millions of total views across all the questions
