hi @Martha
congrats!
You're the one who deserves the congrats. I like that you got rid of most of the all-caps text, and the ampersand color is no longer a one-off.
Jin
Jin
yep. good suggestions from you
yeah all caps definitely don't work with tags, since they're automatically lowercased on the server side
I also like how the meta text is sans-serif, so it's not so stuffy-looking.

yeah. in a way, English and Tex sites have a lot in common.
the community there is also very keen on typography and typesetting.
Ooh, I just noticed the blockquote formatting. Nice!
Jin
Jin
hehe. the css was a bit challenging to do for this site. thus the delay
What fonts are you using for the sans-serif? (I suppose I could go poke around in the source, but I'm too lazy.)
Jin
Jin
Helvetica Neue, with Arial as fall back
are you seeing what Res is seeing?

A: New Design Launched

resAny chance of getting a typeface for questions that isn't quite so hard to read? The extreme contrast between heavy and lightweight strokes produces pretty bad aliasing and jagged edges at 1024x768. I'm sure an antique-y font was chosen for the aesthetic it provides, but it is impacting readabil...

it's just standard Georgia. I have a feeling he/she may not have Cleartype turned on.
I'm not sure which question typeface Res is referring to - the one on the main page (not italic) or the one on a question page (italic, in a nice border). Both are perfectly readable for me. (Windows XP)
Oh, wait, he's referring to question text, not the titles. Also perfectly readable for me.

i know from experience that Serif font is really badly rendered on Windows, for people who don't have Clear Type turned on. CT was turned off by default in XP. but enabled in Win7 I believe.
I just checked, and I actually don't have Clear Type turned on, but the serif text is still perfectly readable.

after designing 10+ SE sites, I've learned people's displays vary so much. not just OSX vs Windows text rendering..
for example, it seems Math.se people's monitors are older, and gammas are set to really high. (most likely older LCD monitors)
while Photography.se people have properly calibrated monitors.
...I went and turned on ClearType, and now everything is much, much prettier. It didn't seem ugly before, but the difference is marked.
Jin
Jin
yeah.
(This is a virtual machine I use only for random web browsing, so I've never bothered much with the OS settings.)
Slightly different topic: you may want to remove the "featured" tag from the design proposal and add it to the 'new design launched' question.

Jin: new design looks good! Thanks for your efforts
Just refreshed my favicons, and love the ampersand/E.

thanks! @nohat good call on font choice
speaking from experience, there may be some css bugs. I've already found a few minors ones and the fixes are deployed on dev already.
Wah. Just noticed that the rank privileges are now at non-beta levels, so I've lost a few abilities. Sniff.
