should we really keep ?
I created because there are languages in which is not appropriate terminology.
I just saw..
I think that is not a sufficient reason. to create such an overly generic tag.
Then again, there are languages in which everything is a list.
e.g. LISP (= "LISt Processing")
see.. that tag is probably a tag as descriptive as..
both are actually aweful aren't they?
@200_success Really? My programming languages teach told me it was Lots of Irritating Silly Parenthesis.

17:07
Any more opinions? Should it stay or should it go?
keep it
I'd be for killing it. along with
they both add close to no value to the searchability of questions..
I was just going to say if list is overly generic than we should say array is overly generic
but that's just my opinion.
should we get rid of
17:09
why not?
(removed for accidentally pressing return)
What to do with a blatantly aggressive answer, that has valid points?
something like this?

A: Project Euler 23: Non Abundant Sums

DovFirst of all, why are you asking here? If you have a brute force solution, submit the right answer and see all the other solution on project Euler. The problem states that all numbers greater than 28123 are out. So you are only finding those numbers below. That's not a lot of numbers. What i...

Arrays Lists and collections are all different
and they server different purposes
I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind getting rid of those three tags.
I've deleted .
@Donald.McLean well I think they are useless for codereview.
@Vogel612 point 3 doesn't seem to make sense?
17:13
@Malachi but at least 1 and 2 are valid points.
I'm making it my mission to fill that tag
@Vogel612 point 1 is invalidated by point 3
and 3 is a bit incorrectly formulated attempt to tell op, that primefactors are only occuring until the sqare-root of the number.
he says to start at 1 because every number is divisible by 1 and then in point 3 he says it doesn't vount
Well it's a prime-factorization, of course 1 doesn't count..
lol nvm that then ;)
17:16
theory: primes are under about one fourth of the number
does that make sense?
@Vogel612 Just because you can't think of a use case, doesn't mean they are, in fact, useless. On the other hand, I'm not saying I disagree either. I would just like a more substantive argument one way or the other.
list is really a collection isn't it?
can we say that every list is a collection and every collection is a list?

Q: CodeFixProvider that instantiates collections

Jeroen VannevelAnother piece of Roslyn-based code, this time a CodeFixProvider. I'm looking for feedback on Roslyn-specific code: Am I using the SemanticModel correctly? Are there any codeflows I have overlooked that might cause issues? Am I violating any best practices I'm unaware of? etc Analyzer name...

My problem with that tag was, that any question tagged with it, also is valid when not tagged with it. Especially as tags are supposed to make questions you are interested in easier to find.
And that tag isn't overly specific, and thus not helpful for searching for questions.
@Vogel612 well now I can't search for questions that have lists in them?
17:19
well you can...
but I doubt that you will find the results you were looking for.
by searching the content?
I can do that with any tag.
good luck then..
okay..
awesome..
@Malachi No, a tree is not a list (just for starters).

@Vogel612 infinite non terminating loop?
17:21
keep repeating these items and you got the whole stacktrace..
yea, think so too... But I got no clue where.
and it only happens after I add some Validation to Project
you did one of @BenVlodgi's Do While(True) loops didn't you?
2
@Vogel612 I think Contract.java, line 132 is the key point.
it's a recursion issue I think, looks like you are calling something that keeps calling itself
It looks like the "toString" function uses a StringBuilder and passes itself somehow.
meh. It's worse..
I got some Contract.
but. how the fck did I get to Contract.toString() when persisting a Project???

Could it be a recursive structure Contracts have Customers and Customers have Contracts?
yep. Looks like it..
and It's called on Project.toString(), where a Customer.toString() is in..
meh.
that's gruesome.
and the worst of it is...
it's my fault that it came to this..
That's tricker. You have to have a prior reference mechanism for that kind of recursive structure.
This site is currently in read-only mode; we’ll return with full functionality soon.
@Donald.McLean sorry, what?
never heard of such a thing.

I would not put a break after a return statement, it would be dead code
is that more a preferential thing or real feedback again
@Vogel612 I guess you would also call it a reference cache. When persisting a Customer, you check the cache to see if you have already persisted it. If not, persist it and add it to the cache. If you have, just persist a reference to it.
@konijn definitely real feedback.
@konijn That's real feedback. I agree.
@Vogel612 You handled that toString issue?
Is there a way to search messages in the chat, I had a gruesome example some time ago
Is SE acting up?
17:30
@skiwi ?? you mean that from ages ago, when I asked rolfl why I should override hashCode() equals() and toString() ?
@Mat'sMug when did that happen here? it happened on SuperUser yesterday
right now
I can't get anything to load now
Yeah, SE entirely offline here. Can't even reach the webpage for read-only message
I lost 1 point too. so now I am at 5669 Rep.....lol
17:31
@Vogel612 No, the one you just put here when I was away, in the last 30 minutes somewhere
@skiwi still working on it..
I'm busting the rep cap today!
the Android app is also having a hard time refreshing
Nothing from germany.
but I'm still getting comment notifications, which is weird
I have perhaps a similar issue and at some point I fixed it
17:33
good time to work I guess.....
Do you have to write return (!empty($this->_source)) ? true : false in PHP or can you simply do return (!empty($this->_source)); like normal languages?
@skiwi wtf that test..

A: Any performance difficulties related to List<Type>?

Travis SnoozyYour performance problem primarily stems from your algorithmic complexity; the loops themselves are reasonable, and any changes you make to either the types involved or using "for" instead of "foreach" instead of LINQ won't actually gain you too terribly much in terms of performance. @Vogel612 can you link your Customer.toString()?

at work..
and It's my fault it's broken..
17:35
and... we're back online
@skiwi it works with the default implementation of Project.toString()
Project@hashCode()
@Vogel612 If it involves anything with an Iterator, then chaos is ensured if you break the Iterator.
where did you get the Iterator from?
I created mine myself in the case where I had an error
lol...
why would I do that??
well I got it "fixed"
need to revisit all my toString() implementations now.

It was the whole create your own LinkedList implementation thing!

@Ben that kinda reminds me of the C# application I was supposed to deploy to an IIS a week ago...
@BenVlodgi Where's my stars now :(

You guys, you know what's awesome?? this thing broke in a debugging sysout.....
and not in the regular code.
Well, this does compile... all the projects compile, and the couple test cases I ran through the system failed, so I fixed the code... and now the few test cases I've run come out right... which means its ready for someone to run their entire warehouse off of

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN
edited question with new situation
Does anyone here actually make whole OOP models, etc. before starting to program something?
@skiwi what do you think??
17:45
I honestly don't know, you know, we get teached a lot of useful things
 @Override
 public String toString() {
     return "Project@" + hashCode() + "[id=" + getId() + ", name="
             + getName() + ", description=" + getDescription()
             + ", startdate=" + getStartdate() + ", enddate="

             + ", responsibleContactPersons=" + getResponsibleContactPersons() + "]";
 // ", customer=" + getCustomer() +
}
that thing commented out was the culprit.
+254 today! (including 3 checkmarks + 50pts bounty!) ..I think it's a new record for me!
@skiwi I hope it would be
@Mat'Mug well you are still well behind my 271 ;)
@Vogel612 So your getCustomer() returns something which returns the object from which you are printing toString() on?
17:49
@skiwi correct...
In fact, about everything in my Class is dangling from the Customer
I would go for printing out at least "customer" and then maybe some very important information from customer if it doesn't recurse you back
I don't really like just ignoring something
and some genius (read: me) had the not so glorious idea to just klick through the Eclipse "generate toString()" dialog.
evil Eclipse

why r u rolfl in stead of rofl

@Mat'sMug who did it?
@TheDoctor - because my name is not rof

@Brandon there's a lot of placeholder code/comments in your post, that makes it hard to review.
@Mat'sMug did you see if you could add the answers feed to this one yet?

I think it's just the same ol' @StackExchange user, with a new name & avatar
@CommandantFeederstein do you fight back when poked at? ;)
Maybe the incident earlier relates to this...

@Mat'sMug I don't understand. The placeholders are simply for the implementation. I mean, I guess I could put the other stuff in there

@Brandon you've done the right thing. And soon you'll notice CR is so much better than SO, you'll start posting everything you write over here ;)
@Mat'sMug I think I'll probably agree on that front. Most of the questions I post aren't "how do I do this", it's usually "Am I doing this well?" anyway.

@Malachi where??
@SimonAndréForsberg good point
@Vogel612 I don't see in Meters. I see in Feet
It's diffeeent on mobile though...
That leads me to wonder: Does auto f = i => 2 * i work in C#? Because Object x = i -> 2 * i doesn't in Java (obviously).
18:44
Starrable = alreadyStarted
it's harder to visualize length of meters because then I have to do some mathematics to convert to feet and figure out how long that is.
1 meter => ~3 feet
@Mat'sMug 1 Meter ~ 3 feet? that is what I was thinking
isn't it a little bit more than 3 feet?
slightly
18:46
Seee... metric units are the real trolls..
Metric makes sense
yup. 1 inch is 2.54cm, so 36 inches is 91.44cm - add another 3.37 inches to get a meter
These units really are... well.
Well, at least you always know that 1 meter is 1 meter, you cannot say that of 1 foot.
Easy to calcupate with?
18:48
Reminds me about this video again...
Especially concerning floating point incorrectness..
Metric is awesome for calculations, especially when you're doing things with pressure, temperature, etc..
Imperial becomes ridiculous

This is just madness:
The system of imperial units or the imperial system (also known as British Imperial) is the system of units first defined in the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824, which was later refined and reduced. The system came into official use across the British Empire. By the late 20th century, most nations of the former empire had officially adopted the metric system as their main system of measurement; however some Imperial units are still used in the United Kingdom and Canada. Implementation The Weights and Measures Act of 1824 was initially scheduled to go into effect on 1 May 1825. ...
Especially the Length section
Even yard to miles has no logical relation: 1 mile = 1760 yards. Atleast with metric 1 km = 1000 metres.
I just don't get how US keeps up with all the equivalences. How many feet is 1 yard?
18:56
(facepalm / knew it)
:).
I don't get it either, I'm Canadian so everything makes sense
@Brandon me too!
(just posted my answer BTW)
This is excellent news.
Oh god, that's not excellent news
Trying to get used to miles, as a Canadian living in the US
Still haven't adapted to Farenheit
1 mile == 1.6km. Farenheit is just plain awkward.

@Mat'sMug Technically 1.609 km :)

F = 1.8 * C + 32
all I know is that 32 == 0
Holding back my votes to not break the cap
@Mat'sMug So what's the process for answer discussion in this case? Should I just do it here or in teh question?
@Mat'sMug yup. Pretty much the same here :)
F 100 = C 38
19:02
@Brandon you can add comments, or since you're already in the chatroom it's whatever you want ;)
K cool: I realized after I posted the question that a template method would have been a better idea (See: TGIF). I'm not able to raise a Before event either way because the code is listening for USB plug/removal events from a messaging window. It's always "Before" the device is plugged until it's not.
Then it shouldn't be named after the "before/after" pattern - DevicedRemoved would be it
I think I'm now capped, but it's hard to tell.
