12:11 AM
Could you please link to the answer
I know there is a link on the question
but honesetly I think the author doesn't even understande
and there are no references
can you link to the explanation of why it occurs?
that's what i'm most interested in
@Neo

Neo
@Mew Dr. Song and Dr. Richards studied seismic waves from 38 earthquakes that occurred between 1967 and 1995 near the South Sandwich Islands at the bottom of the globe. They measured the speed of waves that traveled up through the inner core to receiving seismographs in Alaska at the top of the globe and found that the waves arrived about 0.3 seconds sooner in the 1990s than they did in the 1960s.

The speed of the waves steadily increased over the period because the inner core's "fast axis" -- the fastest possible route through the inner core -- was gradually becoming more closely aligned
@Mew for the second part: he Earth's core was formed very early in Earth's history as heavier molten iron sank toward the center of the planet. As the Earth cooled and dissipated its internal heat toward the surface, some molten iron began to solidify to create the dense, solid inner core at the center of the planet. Enormous pressure keeps the inner core solid in a region of temperatures in the range of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit and possibly much higher.

Fluid iron in the outer core has continued to solidify at the boundary between the two cores, so that over a billion years, the inner co

Mew
do you have the references

Neo
LDEO is one the of the leading earth science labs
where the discovery was made
but i suppose i could find the nature paper

Mew
the start of the article:
SCIENTISTS at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory have found that the Earth's inner core is rotating faster than the planet itself.
makes it seem like the author is just a journalist

Neo
LDEO is lamont doherty earth observatory

Mew
12:17 AM
yeah

Neo
i also heard paul richards himself explain it a bit when was an intern there

Mew
i trust the scientists

Neo
thats lamont's archive

Mew
i don't trust the author of the article
why didn't they put in references?
should we trust them just because?

Neo
we shouldnt trust them
your right
sometimes i think you are just a troll...

Mew
12:18 AM
no
but it seems i have to defend all of my valid questions

Mew
Thanks
This site is going to fail because everyone is anti-questions
nearly all information can be found on the internet

Neo
not easily

Mew
so are against questions that can be found elsewhere/

Neo
it literally took me 5 minutes

Mew
12:21 AM
yep
me too
but i think we should make a repository for such knowledge here
that is my goal, which obviously differs from yours

Neo
and SE

Mew
I want EArth.SE to be first point of call for answers on earth science
so if people want to know the answer they will just google the quesitons here and see it straight away
consider this:
suppose 1000 people are interested in that question
that's 5000 minutes spent finding the article
but if they all knew to come straight here, most of that time is saved
by google* i mean search
by any means
do you understand my philosophy?
it makes society more efficient
Now look at the sites statistics

Neo
your right of course mew

Mew
only 8 questions were asked over 24 hours if you exclude mine
the number of questions per day has been decreasing since there was a crackdown on the standard of questions
we want to ask expert questions, but the experts here aren't asking questions, so therefore we will have nothing if we really stop asking basic questions and the site will fail

Neo
ok mew you are right
i've asked questions
i'm not really an expert

Mew
12:25 AM
not enough
hardly anyone is asking questions, we have a high average question rate because of the first few days

Neo
its because to ask a good question, often a great deal of thought has to be put in

Mew
yes

Neo
you dont spend any time thinking about your questions
its super obvious
and thats what is annoying me

Mew
of course I do

Neo
but im not hear to conflict, i still answer your questions

Mew
12:26 AM
how do you know that?
look at my question on hadley cell

Neo
i did, and i think i upvoted it
it was a good question

Mew
i found out that the original hadley model only included 1 cell for example
yes so i'm saying i do put in thought

Neo
how much thought did you put in this last question ?

Mew
well i wondered how it is possible that the earth rotate slower on the inside
and whether that is sustainable or not due to friction and so on
it was too hard to deduce

Neo
you didnt ask that

Mew
12:28 AM
so i thought i would just ask the question and see what really is the cause

Neo
you could have said, One would think that it isn't sustainable because of friction

Mew
because I didn't know enough, if I asked a question like that I again would be critized for getting my facts wrong
so isntead I thought rather than saying what I thought, i would just ask for what really happens
why do I have to share my thoughts in the question?
that makes the question less useful for others

Neo
no it doesnt

Mew
the question is more useful to others if it just asks the original question I had thought of

Neo
debatable
general isnt always better
nor is it more teachable

Mew
12:30 AM
you obviously think a quesiton is better if the asker has demonstrated thought

Neo
yeah

Mew
but why should he have to?

Neo
why should anyone answer a question then ?

Mew
they don't have to

Neo
why is a question worth answering if there is no thought behind it?

Mew
12:31 AM
this is a question and answer site
there is thought behind it

Neo
ok mew
you are right

Mew
but i'm saying the askwer doesn't need to show it

Neo
I am wrong, you win

Mew
because it is irrelevant to the question itself

@Mew It's better, but not required. Also see this (bit more Stack Overflow centric, but still pretty good read).

Neo
12:32 AM
you are clearly better at this than me

Mew
@hichris123, my thoughts are allined with the askwer of that question

Neo
this site is probably going to fail
but not because of questions

Mew
@Neo, it will fail because of a lack of questions

Neo
but because we wont attract enough new users

Mew
i'm vocal about asking basic questions, but others less vocal have simply refrained from asking them now

12:34 AM
... let's be optimistic here. Look on the bright side. :P

Mew
yesturday there was a period of 12hrs+ where no questions were asked

Neo
so ?

Mew
that is what inspired me to come up with the hadley cell question

Neo
mathematics stack exchange gets like that
all the time

@Mew It's was a weekend, so it's kinda a normal slowdown.

Mew
12:35 AM
not really

Neo
also it was easter
and yes really mew
lol

Mew
the number of questions has been continually decreasing hichris

Neo
that makes a lot of sense mew
if you think about it

@Mew True, but we're answering them.

Neo
with anything there is an initial rush

12:35 AM
Also, let's not get hung up on stats here.

Mew
and it is partly because people are refraining to ask questions that really interst them

Neo
thank you chris
mew, if the level of questions continue

@Neo Yup. And that's great! It means people actually are interested in the site.

Mew
For example, I have had many questions that I'm interested in but haven't asked because I know they will just be closede

Neo
you are interested
but you dont just look up the answers yourself ?
i dont get that

Mew
12:37 AM
well usually it takes more time to look them up
that's why we have a question and answer site, so in the future peopel can see the answers right here
if they are never asked here, then we will never have such a database

Neo
I asked a question I knew no one would initially know

Mew
I ask the quesetions, then I look up the answers

Neo
thats your problem

Mew
so i do look up the questions I'm interested in
but I feel that if the answers were posted here, then future users would have this information much more easily
but you obviously thing gaining knowledge should be time and effort consuming
I think gaining knowledge should be made as efficient as possible

Neo
I dont know anything about gaining knowledge
obviously

Mew
12:39 AM
lol
just because you had to put in effort to gain your knowledge, doesn't mean you should force everyone else to as well

This is actually a great blog post about sites in beta & stats: Does this site have a chance of succeeding?

Mew
you should just broadcast the knowledge here to make it easier for others. That is how society gets more efficient with each generation

Neo
I think ill just spend my time on wikipeida
instead of here now
the goal of SE is to answer specific questions

Mew
no

Neo
because Wikipeida is so great at answering general ones

Mew
12:41 AM
the goal of SE is to be a way of learning through Q and A format
according to jeff
and how can they do so if there are no basic questions
there should be all levels of questions, that act as a stepping stone for users from beginner to advance

@Mew Basic questions are okay, just not right now. We want the expert questions in private beta to show experts that this would be a great site.
Now are really all of those questions closed too basic?
I'm not sure.

Mew
hichris, many of the eperts here are of the anti-expert mentaility
they say themselves that basic questions can be interesting to experts
they say difficult does not equal interestring

@Mew Yes!
You got it.

Mew
and I think many of the "basic" questions I have asked are those ones intersting to experts
and if my question on rotating earth isn't interesting, then why is there a recent nature paper about it?

Neo
IMO, the biggest problem with your questions aren't the subject matter
but i've explained this

12:44 AM

Q: Is expert level the same as difficult?

gerritThere have been some discussions as to whether we want to be a site for experts, or a site for all. There have also been discussions if some questions are too basic. Are those two discussions essentially the same, or is there some difference between them? Can an expert question be basic? Can ...

^ That has some of the best answers on it.

Mew
thanks chris, that is what i was refferring to

Neo
you dont ask questions in a compelling way

Mew
Neo, suppose I read someone's question that is very interesting to me, but that person hasn't put in any effort
i await the answers
i would be very dissapointed if that question is closed
simply because the author hadn't put in the effort
i don't care about whether the author researched prior, all I care about is the answer

Q: What started the Dust Bowl, and could it happen again?

JaxonMost of us know about the Dust Bowl, the huge storms of dirt and dust that swept across America in the 1930s, but what I'm wondering is: What actually triggered the start of the Dust Bowl? Is it very likely that it will occur again?

^ FYI that question is amazing. :P

Neo
it 100% is
even though the answer is very simple

Mew
12:46 AM
clearly that dust bowl question had no research
he just asked what caused it

Neo
it cleary does

Mew
where is his demonstration of personal research to look into the question?

Neo
"Huge dirt storms that swept across america in the 1930s"

Mew
so what

Neo
he knows what the dustbowl is

Mew
12:47 AM
that is the phenomon
where is his research as to what causes the dust bowl

Neo
some of your questions don't even demonstrate understanding of penomena

Mew
maybe he just heard about the dust bowl from history, and is asking us what caused it
like what neo?
let's talk specifics
and let's not raise the volcano question again pls

Neo
lol

Q: What are some good resources to learn about geophysics?

MewWhat are some good textbooks and online resources for learning about geophysics? That is, physics, as it relates to the earth's geology, shape, and internal structure.

Mew
lol
what "phenomena" do I not understand in this question?

Neo
i'm just giving an example of a bad question

Mew
12:50 AM
if anything that was a test question to see if the community would accept resource questions
just like the "what rock is this" question
what about my actual earth science questions
like:

Neo
you are right

Mew

Q: Why does the meandering pattern of the jet stream itself propagate?

MewIt is well known that the jet stream follows an overall meandering pattern, but what is less well known is that this meandering pattern itself moves as a wave with a velocity much slower than the velocity of the jet stream itself. So why does this meandering wave propagate, and what causes the m...

Q: Why does the El Nino Stop?

MewThe reason for the initiation of the El Nino is unknown, but what is well known is how it progresses once initiated. The West Pacific warm pool begins to drift East, and the strength of the trade winds begins to decrease. In turn, the decreased trade wind strength further enhances the drift of ...

Neo
you are right
we all have a huge vendetta against you
IT MUST BE US

Mew
Neo, if i really thought that
then how could i explain having the 2nd highest reputation here

Neo
If i wanted
i could have a way higher reputation, reputation doesnt imply good

Mew
12:52 AM
yes, but i'm just saying that I don't believe you have a vendetta

Neo
neither does upvoting

Mew
or you would have downvoted all my questions

Neo
i yelled at Kea for this too

Mew
Your vision for the site just doesn't match my vision for the site

Neo
your vision for the site doesnt match anyone elses

Mew
12:53 AM
i disagree
many share my viewpoint
like kwinkunks
and tom au
and other sbut i'm not goingt o look them up now it doesn't matter
just because there are a few vocal users doesn't mean it is the belief of most users on the site

Neo
those few vocal users
the ones who vote to close your questions
all have insanely high rep here on SE
not ES SE, just SE in general
furthermore, if the level of questions continue, i'll probably end up leaving
level is bad word
quality

Mew
Neo, good questions aren't just going to magically appear
if you want good questions, contribute

Neo
i do

Mew
2 questions
fantastic

Neo
good questions take time

Mew
12:58 AM
yes

Neo
at least for me

Mew
and therefore the site will die

Neo
i'm ok with that

Mew
well why bother signing up/
the site would have been better if those who want it to exist signed up
and those who are happy with it dying don't

Neo
i do want it to exist
who said I didnt ?

Mew
12:59 AM
you said you are happy for the site to die

Neo
just because I am ok with something not succeeding doesn't mean I want it to not succeed
sigh

Mew
but clearly someone who is passionate about the site working will actually not be ok with it dying

Neo
Who says im not passionate ?

Mew
noone
i merely stated an if then else statement

Neo
implication

Mew
1:01 AM
Neo we only have 200 users

Neo
i'm done with trolls

Mew
and most of thses useres are not expserts
say 20 experts

Neo
if every person asked 2 questions

Mew
that's 40 questions

Neo
400*

Mew
1:01 AM
but
we want expert questions
not lay questions

Neo
you cearly havent learned anything
clearly*

Mew
so ur maths would have 360 lay questions and 40 expert questions
but neo we don't even have 400 questions

Neo
You either havent been listening to what people have said, or you are trolling

Mew
even with all the simple questions, we still only have 175 questions

Neo
but you just questioned my controbution

Mew
1:02 AM
so it is unrealistic to think each person will ask 2 questions

Neo
can you even stay on a point ?

Mew
yes i questioned ur contribution

Neo
cya

Mew
because 2 questions isnt enough if we want the site to succeed
since most people will contribute much less than this
@hichris123, I support your moderator nomination, I can't let moderation go to people like Neo

Mew
1:29 AM
@Neo, if everyone asked 2 questions as you did, and everyone was an expert there would be 400 good questions. But I would guess only 20 experts or so on Area51, meaning only 40 good questions.
which of course is not enough

Neo
1:48 AM
dont worry about it mew
our discussion isnt proving to be constructive

Mew
Np, my new name is geodude
testing
it still says mew
on questions it says geodude

2:23 AM
@Mew you might revisit your choice of accepted answer on earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/370/… , the other answer is a much more thorough explanation than the one you've given the check to

Mew
2:50 AM
@casey, yes originally the answer I ticked was the best, but then the other answer was edited dramatically
I didn't like the idea of taking away the 15 rep to the first user after already awarding him the best answer
it was a little ethical dilemna for me
I can switch if you think I should
Because personally I do believe the answer not ticked is the best also
but only after the dramatic edit
Not sure of proper SE etiquette in this matter

Q: Etiquette of switching "best answer"

GeodudeOn one of my questions, here, Coriolis effect and Cyclones, there were 2 answers I originally selected what I thought to be the best answer. After I had done this, the answer I did not accept was edited to beceme far more comprehensive than it was previously. So much so that I believe it now su...

Neo
3:08 AM
mew i think it's up to the user.

@Mew its ultimately up to you, and users shouldn't get upset over losing 15 rep.

Neo
is rep a big deal on SE ?

@Neo internet points are a big deal! :) for some...

Neo
sigh

I'm just happy to get to 3k and hover on sites I frequent so I have access to the review queues

Neo
3:14 AM
im worried thats why we are getting spam questions

beyond that I don't really care. rep just has a way of accumulating when you positively contribute

Neo
well, with playoff basketball (Memphis just won in OT)
and this new site
my thesis is not getting written
this is getting to be a problem, though i still have a month to write it

I'm in the same boat, but its my prospectus for my comprehensive exam

Neo
oh man
What are you studying ?

meteorology. my emphasis is in severe weather
you?

Neo
3:17 AM
i study mantle dynamics at tectonic margins
always thought the atmospheric and the mantle groups should talk more
since they pretty much use the same methods (at least computationally)

I suppose they are similar on a large scale, just wildly different temperatures and pressures involved :)

Neo
3:46 AM
Need to encourage specific misconceptions about general problems
I think thats what will make this site succeed

Mew
4:20 AM
Yes, and also encourage many "why" questions

Neo
im writing up a answer mew
just taking me a while
cuz i want to make sure i dont misquote their article

Mew
thanks Neo

Mew
5:13 AM
Happy Earth Day Everyone!
Perhaps those earth day images can inspire some great questions about the earth

6 hours later…
11:16 AM
/me pops in and has a look at chat
Neo: One of the difficulties that SE sometimes suffers from, IMHO, is people specifically going after rep (or other Internet Point such as badges). Perhaps unsurprisingly, it can be particularly bad on gaming.SE!
And on an unrelated matter, not just atmospheric and mantle groups, probably also ocean people :-)
The thing about rep is that if you have a good body of GOOD questions and answers out there, they effortlessly accumulate rep over time. It's only if you're trying to "game the system" that you really have to work at it ;-) (although I have no idea how the people with tens of thousands on multiple sites got there!)

4 hours later…
Neo
3:32 PM
@Simon W yes that is my impression ( and ultimatlely why im not posting 50 questions)

2 hours later…
5:21 PM
Looks like we're public now

oh?
@gerrit how do you tell?

@SimonW From the area51 page, + the fact that posts have "share" buttons now

Neo
5:46 PM
yay public

@SimonW as gerrit says, A51 says public on the right side and from our site the privilege rep thresholds reflect public beta values

Also, beta badges have been awarded

was just about to mention that
and on the plus side, Mew will be able to stop complaining about the rampant close votes since only 10 of us currently can cast them

Neo
@gerrit I didn't think about the sun's activity changing, which it might, but since this has already happened to mars, and the earth isn't that much bigger, it seems logical to assume the same.

Neo
6:17 PM
does mathjax work ?

@Neo It didn't happen to Venus.
Mathjax doesn't work yet but I assume it will soon, so I use it as if it works.

Neo
Also, i think the cooling of the core question is a perfect example of a GOOD basic question, than turns out to have not have such a simple answer.
Yeah, I think thats a really good point gerrit
I dont have a response for that one.

@gerrit what was your background before you got into remote sensing?

7:19 PM
@casey I have a BSc in Applied Physics and a MSC in Space Science and Technology
