@waxeagle your mighty bounty worked
@alexp I know what you mean, its very much couched in the not so serious anything and everything world setting of D&D
like just read the enemy descriptions in the handbook

Also the D&D-isms still in DW don't do much for me. HP, alignment, stats aren't really my favorite things about D&D.

I was reading it in bed and woke my wife up laughing when I read the adventurer enemy description

(The weird AW clock doesn't do anything for me, either.)

I know its described as alignment in the core classes but a lot of the fan made classes basically make it motivation
clock?
do you mean how combat is very free form

@JoshuaAslanSmith No, AW has this clock thingy instead of DW's HP.
(Here's one filled in for a special event)
I guess that's analogous to having 6 HP in Dungeon World.
It's a reference to the Doomsday Clock thing. Basically the first three levels of harm are kind of a "warm-up" and then the bad stuff is all packed into that last quadrant.
I just find it confusing graphically.
Best part of DW is Last Breath, I think.

12:45 AM
yeah gotcha
that almost reminds me of how fate and dresden files handle taking "damage"
you can roll with it to a certain point but then you start taking worse and worse repercussions
yeah I like the succeed but with complications for last breath
its like, hey you can live but only if you swear to do this thing

AW has a nice feature where when you hit that bad stuff threshold, you can basically take a permanent injury instead of having the damage go all the way up
I think I like MH more because it's just so simple.
Four levels of harm.

Monsterhearts.

is that the one where youre like teenagers but monsters

Yes.

12:51 AM
yep I heard about that
its intersting
I would never play it because of the sex element
but yeah Its cool game design idea

@JoshuaAslanSmith Same w/ AW, then?

does AW have that much sex content, I only briefly looked over some of the character sheets for it

AW's Specials are also Sex Moves.

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah!

AW has a move that tells you what happen when your character has sex with someone. MH has a move that lets you decide that someone else wants more or less to have sex with you. Huge difference in my book.

12:54 AM
yeah I agree

Doesn't AW totally have a "Turn On" equivalent, though? (Well not exactly since the characters aren't young people in the same way, but...)
I guess my basic impression is that AW "scales" in sexuality more.
But I don't see myself ever really toning it down much.
Ah, found it... "Seduce or Manipulate." Yeah, it's less direct.

2 hours later…
2:47 AM
I'm looking for a way to differentiate my playing pieces by role (4e combat; Skirmisher, Brute, Soldier, Etc.)
Any suggestions on how to indicate that on the pieces?

3:14 AM
@RavenDreamer what kind of mini/token are you using?
(is that an example?)
also how to do you currently distinguish monster from PC?

3:42 AM
@AlexP have you seen Apocalypse World Dark Age? The raw pre-alpha stuff looks really good.
@RavenDreamer I've seen colored disks placed under minis used for all sorts of status effects, no reason they couldn't be used for roles. If you can find a mini poker set with 1" chips, for instance.
I couldn't, but I didn't try that hard...

4:04 AM
@waxeagle The plan is to use the model in the above picture, so yes. (The portrait on the piece is dynamic; this is using my virtual tabletop program).
Before this, I had only a single non-dynamic model, and the only way to tell things apart was by a name that was hovering over them.
@Magician I've debated changing the color of the base. Not sure how that'd go; I'd have to see it in practice, I think.

4:47 AM
I could see the base colors the shape of the base, or the shape of the picture frame

6 hours later…
10:52 AM
@RavenDreamer Change the shape of the base.
e.g. for players, Shield for defender, axeblade or broad vague sword shape for strikers, etc
(or just something more abstract)

@RavenDreamer I'd be more subtle than changing the base color. Change the edge color.
or the bottom line

@waxeagle actually those both sound super good

@JonathanHobbs I liked your base shape change idea though. Good call if the camera angle is such that you can make that out. (Same with the edge/stripe color change)

1 hour later…
12:10 PM
Saw the Lego Movie today. Came out thinking about Bad Day at River Bend.
(If you haven't read Bad Day at River Bend, do. It's the Wild West meets Lovecraft meets <spoiler>, in a colouring book.)

I kinda liked it.

The Lego Movie, or BDaRB?
Lego Movie was good. Solid. Some great visual gags, good handling of self-awareness without giving into irony for its own sake. The 3/4 reveal was... not innovative, but they played it straight and sincere which made it work.

12:32 PM
And Morgan Freeman!
(Never read BDaRB)

@ProfessorCaprion Morgan Freeman doing his level best not to laugh while reading his lines.
@ProfessorCaprion I highly recommend it. It's right up there with van Allsburg's more well-known stuff for providing evidence that kids' books get away with a lot of seriously creepy stuff, and that's probably a good thing.
(Just, um, ignore any of the films based on his work. [sigh])

Auw. :(

Jumanji was seriously better as a 32-page picture book.
Van Allsburg captures the mystic all-is-not-right unease of dreams and crosses that with the misanthropy of folktales.

I... did not know that was a book.

@ProfessorCaprion He wrote the original Polar Express too, and again--much better as a 32-page picture book.

12:56 PM
Bwah. Workblock'd.

@BESW Ah, good. I heard some glowing, glowing reviews.
I really hope it will be shown in cinemas here, and undubbed.

@RobertWolke Hi!

Most films are undubbed, but animated children's movies are the exception.

There, a taste.

Oh, wow!

1:02 PM
Is this man shading with stippling?

@JonathanHobbs Cower before his skill.

He is stippling absolutely everything
I am impressed by his patience and commitment

@waxeagle Yes, this was what I was leaning towards. The bottom line is going to switch from white to red to indicate Bloodied-ness.
I'm more leery to actually changing the shape, simply because it took me 4+ hours to unwrap the UVWs for the first model.

Morning

1:08 PM
Morning!

Hey.

Hi

I added Bad Day at a River Bend to my toread list

I approve!
Really, any of van Allsburg's books are worth reading just for the illustrations, although some of the stories seem a little rushed or lazy.
Bad Day is done in an unusual style for him, because of its content.

1:12 PM
Ok I don't want this answered in chat just want some proofreading.
TITLE Legendary prestige classes

BODY Hello,

Ok so my DM wants us to plan our character's ahead as much as we can, he keeps mentioning legendary prestige classes but so for the only thing I have been able to find are 3.5 epic class rules. This is not what he had in mind as far as I understand.

Are there prestige classes that have other prestige classes as a prerequisite?

We are playing Pathfinder but use some compatible stuff from 3.5.

@BESW the scene where everyone is ultimately mindbroken by cthulhu and starts removing skin from things is a pretty significant departure

@Aaron Hmm. List question that doesn't seem to be actually what you want to know about.

@Aaron the way to as this question is to ask your DM, not us, and ask "what the heck are you talking about when you mention these legendary prestige classes? i have no idea what they are"
because the actual question is "what on earth is a legendary prestige class?"
and you should be asking him that

@JonathanHobbs He is busy so I haven't had the chance.

@BESW You had me at lovecraft [...] color book.

1:20 PM
@BESW Would this count as a list question? I was more going for does it even exist.

@Aaron nevertheless, he is the one you need to ask, since we cannot answer what he's referring to - only he can
even if there were prestige classes that require another as a prereq, that doesn't mean that's what he's referring to

Ok. so general consensus is this is not question worthy then?

@JonathanHobbs I'd upvote that.

@Aaron find a way to leave your DM a note if he's busy, so he can respond whenever he can

In general, "My GM/player/friend said X, what did he mean?" questions are best left up to the GM/player/friend in question.

1:26 PM
If he gives you an answer and you need clarification on an actual thing in the books once he's told you what and where, then we can help.

also to all: I am completely making up the cthulhu-mindbreaking-and-skinning thing; i have not read the book

[snerk]
Yeah, it's Lovecraftian in the "something awful is happening which we can't explain or stop, and it's making us question everything we thought we knew about reality!" sense.

oh is this the one about the guy losing his hat?
i know that one

And the reveal is, actually, very much in line with Lovecraft's "cosmic fear" ethos, albeit cast in a very different light.
@JonathanHobbs Umm, don't think so.

oh
not this one then
but your description fit
@BESW somehow it took one single page about a light in the sky and i am completely intrigued
i will visit the book store tomorrow

1:37 PM
And remember, this is by the same guy who does the insanely detailed conte crayon and oil pastel illustrations I linked above.
I suggest you not Google it much, especially images, or they'll probably spoil it for you.

2:28 PM
@BESW I will avoid doing that. And now I will sleep. Goodnight!

@JonathanHobbs good night

2:49 PM
Be still my beating heat, there is an Apocalypse World/Dungeon World hack that is cyberpunk. Its called the Sprawl, the title page has a Gibson quote and the title Font is the Blade Runner font

1 hour later…
4:00 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith There's no Replicant playbook. :(

hah
its primarily based on gibson/generic cyberpunk
I need to read through more
it does use the clock system though
so meh?
I really want to make something thats somewhere between D&D4e and Dungeonworld in terms of gameplay
but with cyberpunk 2020 as the style

@JoshuaAslanSmith Making the clock digital is really terrible. It loses all representational value. Really should just be, like, a track.

I 100 percent agree
its funny cause it says beta but the version is 0.2 which is definitely alphaish in my opinion

Well, it's an open release.
So that might make it a "beta."
Hmm... looking at the mission stuff, though, I can see why the clock concept kinda fits.
There's a lot of "running it up to the deadline" kinda stuff, I guess.

indeed
you can have open alpha
Alphas are about structural frame works, vertical slice without polish etc.

4:11 PM
It's not a cyberpunk AW hack for me, though. Too much gear, no sex moves, the playbooks are too much like Shadowrun classes. I can appreciate the labor of love but it's not what I like about cyberpunk.
Also I think you need a very good reason to be stuck in the 1980s-inspired classical cyberpunk milieu instead of updating it for modern issues.

haha sex moves
Im super interested to see what Mike Pondsmith and CDProjekt RED do with the Cyberpunk game
sex is one of those topics I think RPGS should generally avoid because you'll probably loose more people than you draw in with it

agreed

also the genre as a whole is affected negatively by stuff like the Book of Vile Darkness
etc.

@JoshuaAslanSmith I have other concerns beyond how many people you can draw in with something. Like my enjoyment of a game directly ties into its ability to handle emotional content.
(That doesn't mean every game needs "sex moves," but we're talking about hacking a game that started with 'em.)

does sex need to be a mechanically represented feature or can it be something that the setting handles via narrative and/or base stat checks
though honestly narrative really

4:21 PM
There's more than that missing, though: I don't see an equivalent of Gaze Into the Abyss / Open Your Brain.
@JoshuaAslanSmith "Sex Moves" (and AW's "Specials" are also just Sex Moves, srsly) represent emotional intimacy. Your hack doesn't have to have literal Sex Moves.
You can't get close to someone without affecting each other.
You can't affect someone so deeply without getting close in some sense.
I could totally see making them something other than, you know, straight-up sex. That'd be easy.
But this hack is missing it entirely.
It could be jacking into VR together or telling someone a secret you've never told anyone before or all kinds of things.

4:37 PM
@AlexP I left you a message in the board & card game chat. I'm heading to a small tournament tomorrow with my Glissa the Traitor

@Trajan Cool!

since I got into all of the AP related stuff via DungeonWorld its not somethign care about

Q: Is sr4-matrix too specific?

FlammaI know that the Matrix differs from edition to edition of Shadowrun. It still feels quite redundant having a question tagged "shadowrun-sr4 sr4-matrix". Shouldn't all the matrix tags be merged? The question would be tagged "shadowrun-sr4 sr-matrix" or something similar, so the system is still ide...

M'rr. Vlad Tepes' actual life is so much more interesting than anything I've ever seen anyone invent as a backstory for Dracula.
(Reading up on Marvel's Dracula.)
