12:02 AM

@Bob: if I wanted to convince them there was a virus, sure ;p

Bob
..
how the bloody fuck did this get migrated to SU????????
0
Q: How to exit from the if statemet which is inside for loop and go back to the void loop in Arduino

MateIf in void loop { ... } in Arduino sketch we have something like this: void setup () { ... } void loop () { while (something0) { if (something1) { if (something2) { ... } } } for (i = 0; i < 10; i++) { if (something3) { ... ...

We really need a way to yell at migraters when they mess up.

Migrate it back ^_^
But edit the top of the question to include TRY AGAIN

Bob
@MichaelFrank Tempted :P

... aaaaaaaand I just cracked the screen on my phone. GREAT!

Bob
12:16 AM
O.o

Must've flexed it enough to crack in my pocket. :(

Bob
how the...
I've sat on my phone more than a few times :S
which model is it?

Alcatel OT 5020 I believe.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Ah. New-ish?
It's a relatively cheap one, so there probably isn't much point replacing the screen...
How much did it cost, anyway? Or on a plan?

Was free on a plan...

Bob
12:30 AM
@MichaelFrank If you don't mind me asking, what do you get/how much do you pay on that plan? Just curious what kind of pricing you get for phone service over there.

$29 a month. 180mins calling (any number in country), unlimited text messaging and 500mb data.
sorry, that's 200 minutes (carryover) to any NZ or AUS number.

Bob
@MichaelFrank good coverage?
sounds about on par with a Telstra (best coverage, probably most expensive) carrier here

Yea pretty much

Bob
actually, no, the cheapest Telstra plan is $60/month :S
yea no thanks :P
but, yea, about average if you aren't hunting for the cheapest (and potentially crappiest)
how bad is the crack?
if it's not too bad, you could just seal it :P

from top to bottom
diagonally.

Bob
12:41 AM
@MichaelFrank well, at least it's not spiderwebbing?
just grab some epoxy and seal it up :P
probably wouldn't feel as nice though

12:59 AM
@Bob well, at least the nuclear arsenal is safe; a random keypresser is unlikely (statistically) to press the password "000000<enter>"

Bob
@allquixotic o.O

do I need a root AND home drives when installing Linux?

nope
you can install everything on a single partition, though / and swap are more common
keeping home seperate is mainly if you reinstall often

1:20 AM
installing Arch on my eeePC. fingers crossed

1:55 AM
you know how DOS had the dir /p to view directories 1 page at a time? Does Linux have a way to do that when running commands like lspci -k?

Anonymous
@MichaelFrank you can use your pager

Anonymous
lspci -k | less

Anonymous
or

Anonymous
lspci -k | more

Anonymous
:>

1:56 AM
ahh cool, and enter gives you the next line. Sweet :D

Anonymous
:)

okay, how do I get out of that now? D:
It says (END) and that's it.
ahh Q
or q

Anonymous
2:10 AM
lol

Anonymous
@MichaelFrank sorry i couldn't tell you that more quickly

I was stuck pressing buttons. Which is fine. :)

2:25 AM
so... removing /sda (which was a USB drive) then rebooting promtes /sdb (the internal drive) to /sda?
Nice.
I guess it does. D:
well that was a noob mistake. :(

Anonymous
lol

changed my syslinux.cfg to point to /sdb1/ because that's what the internal drive was recognised as during installation.
yus! Fixed it :D
Great, now I have no network connection. o.O

Anonymous
2:43 AM
wtf is goin on with your linux

I'm butchering it.

you should really stahp

HAMMAHTIME!

basically, I don't have much experience with Linux, and I'm trying to install Arch on a eee. :)
it had a network connection during install, but now it doesn't.

Bob
@MichaelFrank networking problems. the best kind of problems.

3:07 AM
yea, especially since I don't know how to check the network status yet ^_^

3:43 AM
@MichaelFrank: better to use the device id for that.
@MichaelFrank: check /etc/networks/interfaces
and ifconfig, ip addr is the 'right' command but ifconfig is easier to remember
Oh, I talked to mom and basically told her I'm not going to do that whole computer sabotage thing
However, I'll be trying it on a VM, just seems too much fun

oh, battery is flat at the moment... Too busy playing Ghosts. D:
which runs like a slideshow on my computer :(

Bob
@JourneymanGeek why not? :P

@JourneymanGeek -bash: ifconfig: command not found

@Bob: Ethics ;p

but it's there in bin :S

3:47 AM
@MichaelFrank: goddamned arch
ip addr

heh
yea, that works... Don't see any IP address though

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ah yes, wouldn't want the board of canines to take action

ahh okay. so dhcpcd doesn't run on boot.

@Bob: I guess I'm not... bad to the bone.

Bob
@MichaelFrank echo $PATH

3:50 AM
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/core_perl

maybe sudo ifconfig?
scratch that

nah, it's probably because I'm logged in as root?

shouldn't be methinks

@MichaelFrank sudo has different path ;)

Bob
@MichaelFrank type ifconfig
probably have the same error

3:54 AM
Nothing.
oh, it's not there. ^_^
I have ifcfg

Bob
wtf
the hell is ifcfg?

not *nix

4:15 AM
ifconfig is depreciated iirc
and arch has been pretty agressive with stuff like that

I have X now. :)
I have a clock
and 3 terminal windows. o.O

4:43 AM
and we now have LXDE! Something that resembles what I'm used to. :)

Q: Where can I get the best Anti-Valenitne Card?

user3180334I want to surprise my ex-girlfriend by giving her an anti-valentine card to show hate towards her and make her feel jealous that I am in another relationship.

hmm

lol

Bob
@ekaj shitty trolls are shitty

So what shenanigans are you guys up to these days?

Bob
5:23 AM
@nhinkle reading through User Experience and Programming Puzzles & Code Golf, of course
incidentally, I love how this question was written:

Q: PHP expects T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM?

Peter TurnerDoes anyone have a T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM?

5:36 AM
It makes no sense... Then suddenly it makes total sense.

Bob
5:47 AM
@MichaelFrank ...nah, still makes no sense

once you read the answers :P

Bob
@MichaelFrank nope
the sensible way would have been to display the character itself
in this instance, just say '::' or something
even if you must include the text, it's still weird to make it hebrew

A random dog showed up at my house.. I now have a new random temporary pet

Bob
the rest of the error message is english
at least be consistent
also, english is the de facto language for programming languages anyway, and definitely for PHP
@ekaj Is it a small off-white dog?

Err, no

Bob
5:50 AM
Because @JourneymanGeek has been known to wander.

I was gonna say he could come play with the dog
I had to chain it up though because it was interested in my cat

Ordered a 64 GB Plextor M5M mSATA SSD earlier today

Plextor? D:

The goal here is to use it as an SSD cache

I hear Intel is the only truly reliable SSD vendor, but since you aren't going to be storing actual data on it, it probably matters little
cache dies, you sigh and warranty the damn thing

5:53 AM
The SSD will be set up with a single partition just over 32 GiB in size for ReadyBoost
I hear Windows handles ReadyBoost on internal SSDs differently than on a flash drive or SD card
It's supposed to preserve it across reboots, rather than discard it and start over

Bob
@DragonLord ReadyBoost? ...there's better caching implementations for SSDs, I believe.
@allquixotic There's a couple enterprise-grade ones, but they can be pricey. Intel is definitely the best (by reputation) for its price range.

@Bob I'm not able to switch to RAID mode for Intel Smart Response--the registry hacks don't seem to work, I end up with blue screens every single time
The remaining space on the SSD will simply be left unpartitioned to help maintain consistent performance and extend the life of the unit

Bob
@DragonLord Was it originally in SATA (AHCI) mode? Probably was.
If so, you don't need to do any registery hacks to enable RAID mode.

@Bob Yes, it was in AHCI mode, and I can't change it without causing Windows to crash with a BSOD

Bob
Though you may have issues if you try to add the existing volumes to a RAID array. I believe that is destructive.
@DragonLord Do you have the Intel drivers installed?

5:57 AM
Yes.

Bob
@DragonLord Eh. Wait... UEFI?
I hate fiddling with UEFI :P

Yes, it's UEFI

Bob
Chances are your bootloader had a GUID saved and now it's changed.

The system returns to normal operation once I switch back to AHCI mode, though

Bob
You sure you haven't added anything to a RAID array?
i.e. just RAID mode with independent drives?

5:59 AM
No, there's no RAID array. It's just one disk.
I'm only adding an mSATA SSD for caching.

Bob
So... are you willing to try and/or do you have a backup?

I'd rather not have to reinstall the system.

Bob
Well... a "boot repair" is fairly nondestructive. Just copy the BCD files elsewhere beforehand and you can easily restore.
Then once you can boot, you can restore the original BCD files and change some values to make them work again (the boot repair temporary files tend to be missing some entries, like memory diag and recovery environment)
but switching from AHCI to RAID does have some potential for loss of data
usually fine if you aren't actually creating a RAID volume

time to listen to a lecture on special relativity before i sleep

How many of you have experience with ReadyBoost on an internal SSD?

Bob
6:04 AM
@DragonLord I think @JourneymanGeek knew a different third party program that worked with Windows
personally, I never really liked ReadyBoost
I'd still go with the Intel one if possible, since that's independent of the OS
and should work pre-boot as well

6:30 AM
If I did, I don't remember

Bob
@JourneymanGeek A dog's memory...
(probably wasn't you then, sorry)

6:54 AM
Is there a way to tell your bank to temporarily not make any charges to your credit card without freezing your credit?

You could ask them?

@ekaj: also, no I wasn't hanging out at your place ;p
OH

7:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek In Russia, cache frees you!
Also can happen during play sometimes I think... I need to double check this. Well yes, video is buffered partly until your playback reaches certain point where more buffering is required, correct? Hmmm.

I cannot confirm if video stops during play because it is hardly possible to load video in forst place. I have to touch "Replay" dozens of times before comment section, recommended section and video load.

I think what AdBlock Plus does is blocks IPs of advertisers and when YouTube app tries to load, it ends up nowhere while in Firefox AdBlock Plus works good. It blocks ads but all loads w

Bob
7:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek I think that's the one (@DragonLord)
@ekaj unlikely there's a defined system for this in place
it's a bit of an odd request

err, not really

They might not do it, if you have any direct debit or automatic payments set up on it.

Bob
I wonder how the absolute cheapest ebay fountain pens perform? :P
> Please clean the pen converter before using.
ಠ_ಠ

Bob
@MichaelFrank sorry, fountain pens

7:56 AM
ahhhh okay.,

Bob
basically, crap like this: ebay.com.au/itm/…
which is actually marginally cheaper than the smiggle ones :P

my Visionnaire isn't flowing correctly. :(

Bob
the smiggle ones are decent, surprisingly
@MichaelFrank yea... about that...
see the comments :(
> The Visionnaire isn't actually a $45 pen, it's an $0.85 pen that's been upsold through kickstarter, I like how the actual business model that the kickstarter is funding is to be the supplier of those pens from China but presented as if they're actually making them rather than importing them.

Link to original pen: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/1454449700/High_end_fountain_pen_2014_new.html
It does look like it, no?

indeed...

Bob
Well... there's always the Safari to fall back on :P

8:00 AM
I have a $10 Whitcoulls one that is cool. It's plastic and purple though.
So not using that anywhere.

Bob
xD
@MichaelFrank This is my current outdoor/in-pocket pen: smiggle.com.au/shop/m20/en/smiggle/large-fountain-pen
wait, that link's broken

Bob
their site's ridiculously hard to navigate
cost $3 instore :P
@MichaelFrank "handcrafted"
that name is poison now...

it got cancelled AND check out the comments.
ahh well... You win some, you get scammed by some.

LiouTao:

Javascript will be one of the easiest languages you ever learn. Very simple, but if you want to do any serious computing, Javascript won't cut it.
@allquixotic You call that complex? ^

8:12 AM
Python

Retention officer? Customer retention? And why russian if there are arabic speaking customers?

Bob
@Boris_yo It's easy to write any old crap.
It's hard to do it right.
JS will accept little errors and roll right on without a care.
But it's quite easy to introduce subtle bugs.
It's also got lots of little weird browser-specific quirks.
Something like Python can be reasonably easy to learn, and is a bit stricter and more standardised, though.

Dropped my laptop, broke a plate, got ketchup on my laptop and a 60 dollar book -.-

Bob
@ekaj :O

I've been working on some python basics on the side

8:23 AM
@ekaj That sucks. I cracked the screen on my phone today. :/

Ow :/ expensive to replace?
shoot I got ketchup on two books

I dunno. It's a cheap phone so I'll probably just use it the way it is until I can afford to buy a proper replacement.

@MichaelFrank Don't you use case for smartphone?

@Boris_yo they don't really make cases for this phone.

I wanted to get Nexus 4 but now there is 5. It could be tempting but I don't need smartphone that does not fit my pocket so I will keep Nexus 4 in my sight.

Bob
8:28 AM
@MichaelFrank I guess, if you wanted a silver lining...
@ekaj Well, if they're crime mystery... :P

is probably getting a moto G once he gets a job

@JourneymanGeek Tried it? It allows access to extended memory over 4GB in Windows XP

I've never needed it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek considering it... but the aus release is prolly gonna be a $100 markup, minimum :P
@Boris_yo OH WOW THAT'S AW- wait why do you feel the need to point out a 'feature' for a 12-year-old outdated OS?

@Bob People use Vms running XP. And less and less also use XP still...

Bob
8:35 AM
@Boris_yo Annnd? In what situation would you need a VM running XP with >4GB of RAM?
The only reason to run XP in a VM is for legacy software.
Legacy software is highly unlikely to need that much more RAM now than when XP was common/new.

@Bob There must be reason that website is still online.

Bob
@Boris_yo ...
It does about a million other far more useful things than >4GB on XP.

@Bob: worst come to worst, I'll buy it in india ;p

http://biz.alibaba.com/generalorders/po/draftPo.htm?productId=1454449700&pageType=duliDetail

You mean I can set my own pricing here?

Bob
@Boris_yo You can probably make an offer.
Alibaba is for bulk orders.
Min amount on that one was something like 1k

8:43 AM
@Bob Bulk only? For wholesellers?

Bob
For whoever feels the need to buy in bulk, presumably.

@Bob Then AliExpress is the only resource to get individual pricing?

Bob
I really really want to smash something right now.

9:28 AM
GRIMLOCK SMASH

@Gowtham TL:DR! Can you tell me what was inside of the book that she got good living out of?
@Bob I assume such offense is based on reply he has got?

Bob
...
note to self: don't try to hibernate machine while windows defender is scanning
because something is horribly broken now and I don't know how to fix it
google? nope, flood of absolutely fucking useless MS answers threads

"Please hit thanks for this answer!" "Please +rep me if you think this helps!"

Bob
!!tell 13107844 no

Bob
9:40 AM
seriously
that thread I linked above?
"I can't turn it on. it gives me an error"

@MichaelFrank Please donate at least $5 to my PayPal account if it makes your life easier.

Bob
"here's how you fix it: go tick that checkbox you already tried and..."
%^*&@%$#*^$
IT'S A MIRACLE
MS ANSWERS WAS USEFUL. SOMEONE MAKE THIS A HOLIDAY.
ahem
ok, I'll stop shouting now

Bob
@MichaelFrank @_@
wtf happened there?
someone use it as a nail?

apparently it arrived like that.

9:43 AM
@Bob It's best to search with error code to narrow down to potential cause.

Bob
> When all you have is a hammer...
@Boris_yo ...are you intentionally trying to piss me off?

@Bob No!

Bob
Because you are doing a very good job of it.

@Bob: naw, he's always this clueless. ;p
/me is going to assume you checked event viewer

Bob
@JourneymanGeek For all the good that did :P
Though, I did just fix it by running a quick scan (???)

9:45 AM
So... the one good answer to your issue is to uninstall it and try again?

Bob
might turn this into a SU question

Not a bad idea ;p

Bob
@MichaelFrank would be a good answer, except... well... Windows Defender is kinda built into win8 and can't be uninstalled :P
just disabled, not uninstalled AFAIK

and holy cow, I am getting a lot of rep from the evil question o0

@JourneymanGeek Which one?
The 32bit number one?

9:46 AM
@MichaelFrank: No, the one about intentionally breaking a computer ;p

Cause they guy with the top answer posted in meta absolutely stunned with the amount of rep he had received from that answer.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If only I knew how to analyse these log dumps but meh :P
2
@MichaelFrank it happens
in fact

@Bob gogo out of context star!

Bob
my highest voted answers? I am far from proud of them

@Bob: I usually work it out on the fly

9:48 AM

Bob
@MichaelFrank I'm afraid in a technical chatroom "log dumps" usually has the technical meaning :P

:(
true.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, still not gonna do me a whole lot of good
probably something with windbg, but the internals of MSE/WD are hardly documented

I wonder if there's a magic repair tool for defender

Anyway, I had an answer accepted today because I made this comment:

Make another batch file to kill the first? It'd be some kind of brutal process hunger games.

9:49 AM
;p
TWO FILES ENTER. ONE FILE RUNS!

Internal document is responsible for strong and b elements while external document is only responsible for strong element? Can I make it responsible for b as well?

anyways, movie time! Think I'll try and convince the wife to watch Pacific Rim.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Rule 1 of rep: SCREENSHOTS
Rule 2 of rep: really simple analogies

Bob
It's like my high school engineering teacher: pictures make me happy!
@OliverSalzburg Looks kinda like a Savannah?

9:52 AM
Looks like a cat ready for battle

Bob
The Savannah is a domestic hybrid cat breed. It is a cross between a serval and a domestic cat. History A Savannah cat is a cross between a domestic cat and the serval, a medium-sized, large-eared wild African cat. The unusual cross became popular among breeders at the end of the 1990s, and in 2001 the International Cat Association accepted it as a new registered breed. In May 2012, TICA accepted it as a championship breed. Savannahs are much more social than typical domestic cats, and they are often compared to dogs in their loyalty. They can be trained to walk on a leash and to play ...

Seems plausible. I thought it was a en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bengal_(cat)

Bob
@OliverSalzburg They are kinda related.

@OliverSalzburg I tried to show my wife that this morning... but she was still half asleep and just hit me in the face.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I think you're probably right. The ears...
Meh, I can't identify anything (faces, colours, ...), let alone cat breeds.

10:01 AM
It looks too slender to be a Savannah

Bob
10:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek I just realised my main smiggle pen at the moment was actually the one that went with the rosewater experiment
and I can still smell it -_-
I wonder where the other ones went
