But you are not very much into traditional monotheist religion.
And you are probably not a very rigorous thinker.
That's what it tells me.

Jez
nope
maybe i meant dictionary definition 9: "of or relating to the mind or intellect."
or just definition 1: "of, pertaining to, or consisting of spirit; incorporeal."
consciousness is incorporeal

No, this is clearly what people mean when they say they are "spiritual". Trust me.

Jez
it may be an emergent property from the physical body but it itself isn't corporeal

Context is key.
Any word has different uses and different senses.

Jez
but the word "spirutual"'s different senses all tend to come in the same context
that's the problem

12:02 AM
Not in my experience.
When someone declares himself spiritual, it is as I said.

Jez
@Cerberus I am a real atheist, yet I think there is a "supernatural" thing going on, called my consciousnsss.
and i've thought about it

How is it supernatural?

Jez
it can't be explained by science that I "feel" that I'm living this moment.

You sound pretty spiritualist to me.

Jez
i perceive time

12:05 AM
I.e. superstition.

Jez
what's superstitious about what i said?

"Supernatural" and "can't be explained by science".

Jez
that's not superstitious

shrugs

Jez
anyway i wish we could just get rid of the word
every time someone talks about how they're "spiritual" i wanna shake them and say "and what does that fucking MEAN??"

Do they usually hire waiters and busboys separately in your country?

@EnglishMaster usually a busboy works his way up to being a waiter, no?

@badass and @EnglishMaster You are both wrong. First you have to wait for the bus. So you're a waiter. Then you get on and become a busboy/busgirl.

busperson is the politically correct term

There's a job ad for GCHQ on Careers Overflow. The job description is so vague as to be totally useless.
why do companies do that?
they have this perfect opportunity to tell a candidate what the job entails and instead they say nothing

Patented in France by Thomas de Colmar in 1820 and manufactured from 1851 to 1915, it became the first commercially successful mechanical calculator. Its sturdy design gave it a strong reputation of reliability and accuracy and made it a key player in the move from to calcul...

Q: Is there a word for phrases such as those that are used to calm a baby down?

MariusSpeakers of Purik-Tibetan may say "kangchu Tululululuuuuu" in order to comfort a baby they're cradling in their arms. To someone else, they might also say that they are "doing the Tululu". What's a good (and perhaps very general) word to refer to such a "phrase"? Unlike a lullaby, it's not sung (...

@Cerberus One of these...
The Cybermen are a fictional race of cyborgs who are amongst the most persistent enemies of the Doctor in the British science fiction television programme, Doctor Who. Cybermen were originally a wholly organic species of humanoids originating on Earth's twin planet Mondas that began to implant more and more artificial parts into their bodies as a means of self-preservation. This led to the race becoming coldly logical and calculating, with every emotion deleted from their minds. They were created by Dr. Kit Pedler (the unofficial scientific advisor to the show) and Gerry Davis in 1966...

@Jez "Can't be explained by science" != "supernatural". Just because science doesn't have a good explanation for consciousness doesn't mean that there isn't a good explanation.

I think that the system created by consciousness can't be used to explain consciousness
as with Gödel's incompleteness theorem

I dunno. I think part of the problem is that it's hard to define exactly what is meant by consciousness.
But either way, even if we cannot reach the definitive answer, doesn't mean that there isn't one.

Exactly.
In a sound world view, the supernatural is by definition impossible.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 There is an HTC One with a card reader now.

That's proof of the supernatural right there!

Not sure whether the battery can be replaced by hand, but the back cover is removable.

I have no objections against turkeys.
Oh, and the One also has two SIM slots.
Oh, and you want to hear something funny? I filled in a test on lemonde.fr about what decently priced smartphone I should buy.
I filled in all the questions honestly and without prejudice.

did it say iPhone?

Guess what they recommended?
> 1. Iphone 4S
2. Nokia Lumia something
That was it.
@MattЭллен Ding!

7:24 PM
Then it's destiny. YOu must buy the previous model iPhone or anger the gods

The Nexus 5 was also in their system, but I scored higher for an Iphone 4S.
@MattЭллен *the model before the previous model

@Cerberus that too

And it's only € 400!

buy both, just to be sure

Haha you bastard.

7:25 PM
@Cerberus half the price of a bitcoin

Oh, I was mistaken. The black one with 16 GB is € 545.

@Cerberus Hey! I'm not the gods

I mean, come on!!

It's not me you've got to keep happy

And this is on a price comparison site that always has the most webshops and the lowest prices indexed.
The white one with 8 GB is "only 385", but still.

7:27 PM
the price of gods's love is high

God is dead.
AKA Jobs.

@Cerberus Odd. Why would they recommend those? Seriously I would never recommend either.
The Lumia only if someone said "photos are more important than anything else but I refuse to buy a camera"

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I picked the middle choice for photos.

and the 4s? no. I'd recommend the 5 or 5c or 5s first.

I did pick "of capital importance" for "ease of use", or whatever the term was.

7:29 PM
Especially if I am allowed to recommend any phone at all
Yeah, but the 4s is obsolete

You're not, not if it's an Iphone. You know that.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Any other Iphone will be over € 400 even for a useless model with only 8 GB.

Well, assuming that someone came to me and said "Here are the things I value in a phone. What phone, of all the phones for sale currently, would you recommend?"

So they picked a useless model with only 8 GB that was within their price range, the 4S.

If someone came to me and said "I have next to no money, but must must must have an iphone" I'd recommend that they don't get an iphone

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I would only recommend an Iphone to someone who asked, "I'd like a phone, any phone, as long as it's an Iphone".
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I would recommend that he buy a second-hand Iphone, or rather save the money for a shrink session.

7:32 PM
@Cerberus I would recommend it to people who've already invested in the apple ecosystem, or to people who have lots of friends who have.

I would not even recommend it to those people.
I would only recommend it to people who already know they absolutely must have an Iphone.
Which would render my advice obsolete anyway.

Well, like, if they already have an ipad. may as well get the iphone, it will make life easier

With a short set-up, they can have everything synchronised with an Android phone. I'd offer to do it for them.

It's not just data though. What if they want to share apps they've bought. etc.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 They can buy them again and still save a ton of money compared to buying an Iphone.
How many paid applications do they really need?
I've never pirated an Android application so far, and I've only paid maybe € 20 or so to Google in total.

7:37 PM
@Cerberus Around here the iphones are subsidized so......
So it recommends the iphone 4s for me as #1, and the Nexus 5 as #2.
W.T.F.
if I change the usability answer from Capital to "I don't care if it's complicated, I want to personalize everything" then the #2 choice is still N5 and the #1 choice becomes the Galaxy S3
Why would anyone buy a galaxy S3 over a Nexus 5, I have no idea
Actually of all the phones they are selecting from, the ONLY one I'd recommend at this time is the N5.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah OK, conditional sales disrupt the market and competition, so then all bets are off. Which is why Iphones are only popular in those countries...
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Ridiculous!
I agree, the N5 is by far the best phone of the lot and the only one I'd recommend.

@Cerberus I mean, other phones are subsidized too. But the best subsidy is for iphone.
In fact, it's starting to be the case the the only worthwhile subsidy is the iphone. otherwise byod to save money.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah I wonder why that is.

on Rogers, the BYOD price is $35/month + data. The subsidized-smartphone-price is $55/month + data
So over the two-year contract, you pay $480

Because the starting price of the Iphone is by far the highest, so they are forced to subsidise it more?

7:47 PM
Yeah, maybe because of the margins.
Also, iphone users often have lots of disposable income, so they are more likely to be big spenders on data, etc.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That should get you a good phone that's slightly below top tier, or a top-tier phone that is a year old? Or more than a Nexus 5...

@Cerberus right now it gets you a Moto X for $0, or a Galaxy S4 for $0, etc

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, Apple users are Apple users because they like to spend lots of money on certain things that others would fund irresponsible (even poor Apple users).
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Ehh what do you pay for an S4 hors abonnement?

LG G2: $0 ($600 subsidy) Sony Xperia™ Z1: $100 ($500 subsidy)

But are those based on Amazon prices?

7:50 PM
No, they are not the Amazon prices
Rogers sells the S4 for $699.99
I think they must be having a sale. Normally the subsidies are never over $500

USD 522 for a G2 on Amazon. amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00FCMFOFM/…
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But you shouldn't be looking at those prices.

@Cerberus to be honest, the internet prices are not always that much better

^

@Cerberus by the time you factor in shipping, exchange, etc, it will be close to $600 cad

Get it from .ca, then.

7:53 PM
yeah, there are couple amazon vendors that have it at $500 (but say things like "no warranty" and "open box scratches on back") and then it goes north from there

Ah, it is a lot more expensive on .ca!
Odd.

The point is: Samsung has not made it cheap to buy the phone off-contract.
Most of the vendors haven't.
So the cell-phone company price is usually ballpark with the MSRP and the internet price
There are deals to be made, of course, but you're not going to save hundreds, normally
in my experience
unless you buy refurb

It's € 440 on .de. amazon.de/dp/B00EQ8Y7AG/…
I guess CAD 600 is even less than € 440.

anyway. Hopefully the transparent price discounts for byod will force consumers to be more savvy about what phones actually cost.
and that will drive the prices lower as they shop for bargains.

Yes.
Let's also hope that providers will start offering cheap SIM-only plans.
As in $10/m.

They do that here because they always have.

They have sim-only plans here now. But they're way more than that.
unless you go pre-paid

But prepaid is very expensive per minute or GB, right?

it can be, yes

So then you have only 50 MB/month or so.

7:59 PM
it depends.
sometimes, pre-paid is a great bargain, because the pre-paid users tend to be poor, so they price stuff lower

10 cent p/minuut
10 cent p/sms
1 euro p/dag internet, max 20 MB p/dag

eg one provider had unlimited "web browsing" for $10. But turns out it isn't full data access; only http worked.

Haha.
Well, the above is from a cheap Dutch provider.
Still very expensive.
Internet access alone will be € 30 for a month if you use it every day.
And then you get 600 MB.
Vodafone gives you 1 GB for € 15/month on prepaid.

In Austria I got 1GB (actually 3Gb, there was a promotion) for € 10 prepaid. But that was a data-only sim.

Oh, you can also get 200 MB for € 10.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Surely you could also make calls on that SIM?
It would just cost extra?

8:03 PM
nope
I don't think it had a phone number
it was intended for tablets, computer sticks, etc.

Hmm.

Apple has definitively removed an application with Zwarte Piet from its shop.
PC nuts.

Yeah.

So that phone survey. I dunno how they assign their ratings but you can play with the weights of the various criteria to see how the rankings change
But I still don't understand why anyone would bother with those other android phones when there is a flagship device that's the same price
Especially when it's the N5. It kicks butt in almost every category. It's a clear "buy" unless the camera is of utmost importance to you, or expandable storage (which they didn't ask)
