@Mokubai cool -- Mattherson server, Terran Republic == me
if you go to Mattherson as a different faction we could kill each other; if you go TR, we'll be on the same team

I will have a looksie. Is there a difference between the factions? Are they like guilds?

@Mokubai they are very different in their gameplay and game mechanics

@allquixotic So who's best? ;)

on the surface it looks like "the red guys", "the blue guys" and "the purple guys", but in reality, they play differently... it's still an FPS with vehicles and aircraft, don't get me wrong, but the properties of the weapons, etc change
Vanu have energy based weapons that have no "bullet drop" (gravity pulls ordinary kinetic bullets toward the ground, as in real physics)
Terran Republic has a lot of fully automatic rapid-fire weaponry, which isn't extremely damaging per hit, but overall DPS is high if you can keep the enemy in your reticle
New Conglomerate has weapons that shoot larger caliber shells that do a ton of damage, but also have long reload times and smaller magazines
then there are faction-unique vehicles and aircraft, faction-unique MAX armors, etc
the main battle tanks illustrate the difference well: the Terran tanks can absorb a lot of damage, and they lob medium-range HEAT shells that do good (but not amazing) damage to just about anything they can hit... the Vanu tanks shoot very fast-traveling energy beams that only make a small explosion, so you pretty much need a direct hit to do damage; also their tanks die easier
and the New Conglomerate tanks shoot huge salvos that wreck most smaller stuff (infantry, MAXes and light vehicles) with a single shot, but fire about half as often as a Terran tank, and have even greater bullet drop due to the mass of the shells
so they're more like an artillery than a battle tank really
same with the heavy assault infantry: fight an NC and you'll probably get one-shotted by a jackhammer shotgun at point blank range; fight a TR and you'll get ripped apart by a thousand bullets pouring out of a chaingun at short/medium range; fight a VS and you'll get pew-pewed by a hail of Pulsar laser beams
'course, there's enough weapon variety that each faction is good at any range if you equip the right weapon

6:18 PM
almost finished downloading

everybody has snipers for extreme long range, and shotguns for extreme short range... just that the NC has the best shotguns for point blank, VS has the best snipers for long range (no bullet drop), and TR has the best medium-range battle rifles because high damage and rapid fire
I won't be able to play until I'm home from work which will be this evening, so you'll have to go in without me, but remember, if you want to play in my squad, Mattherson server, Terran Republic
(it's 1:20 PM here)

Hmmm. not sure which team suits my playstyle more, probably VS or TR then...

@Mokubai TR has a one-headshot-kill sniper rifle (if you're into that kinda thing, and can get headshots) but the bullet drop means you have to lead the bullet and anticipate its drop based on distance
requires more skill but the reward is insta-kill

MMMmmm, sounds tasy

I think the game only has two types of locational damage: headshots, and everywhere else
so if you miss the head you will hurt them a lot but not kill them (unless they're already hurt)
personally I don't snipe very often because I'm bad at it... I tend to either drive vehicles, which I'm very good at, or go heavy assault and fight people inside buildings at short range
the vehicles are very satisfying and an important element of the game; I think it's well-balanced
in order to successfully breach a fortified enemy base, you almost have to come in guns blazing with vehicles... but once you're in, infantry superiority is the only way you can complete the capture of the base, because you have to hold the control point, and only infantry can access it

Eh?
Administrator is nobody?

@Boris_yo nobody is a common UNIX account name for unprivileged services

@allquixotic Cache administrator? I guess cache is unprivileged service?

the software probably looks in a config file for an administrator name, and if it isn't specified, it tries id -u to get the user name of the user the service is running as
you can probably find something like # admin_name = Some Person in /etc/whatever-cache/whatever-cache.cfg on their server.. the # being "commented out"
and yeah, it'd be unprivileged because it doesn't need many permissions to run a web server

@allquixotic Russian version of Wikipedia times out now while other languages work. Seems languages are spread on different servers.

GAHH a tool I used removed all the users from a T-SQL server trying to publish crap, I hate that t-sql let's me do that, now back to digging up stupid damned command line that lets me re-add myself as admin because there's now no one with user permissions
stupid MSSQL ACLs grumbly humbug hrmf, you shouldn't be allowed to remove local admin from the MSSQL server since local admin can always re-add itself (using a pain in the ass procedure)

yay! I can finally edit YT playlist! D:

@Braiam Don't you hate when you start watching series of videos without being in their playlist and looking for additional videos in recommended tab?

OMG... I can't delete "deleted videos" from my play list :(
@Boris_yo thou does noth needs youtube's playlists, but a real video manager :/

@Braiam Video manager? Why? It's a feature for personal uploaded videos.

Q: Xenserver 6.2 has trouble booting Linux live discs

AlexI recently installed Xencenter 6.2. I was able to install and configure a Windows VM. However, whenever I boot different Linux distros after the boot menu (syslinux or whatever) the disc always locks up. I tried Fedora 19, RHEL 6, and gparted. I get the feeling that it must be a xenserver or BIOS...

@allquixotic sarcasm (uncountable) A form of humor that is marked by mocking with irony, sometimes conveyed in speech with vocal over-emphasis. Insincerely saying something which is the opposite of one's intended meaning, often to emphasize how unbelievable or unlikely it sounds if taken literally, thereby illustrating the obvious nature of one's intended meaning.

Would hybrid hard drives be considered legit ssd's? If I build a computer and instead of getting a hard disk as well as a solid state drive, I just get a hybrid hard drive, would it still be the same and as good as getting the two individual drives?

cuz the grumpy cat says :D
2

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute because the mini SSD in a hybrid drive is only going to make that particular data fast, but if the data that needs to be retrieved is not in that little SSD, it goes through the hard drive, which is just as slow as any old hard drive

The hybrid I was looking at was 1tb hard disk with 64mb ssd cache

Are hybrid cars considered legit electric cars? If I build a car and instead of getting two cars, one with a gasoline engine as well as an electric car, I just get a hybrid car, would it still be the same and as good as getting the two individual cars?

The real hybrid drives are nice for booting though. The most accessed sectors (the hybriud drive has no idea about filesyetms or files) will be cached. Usually that involves the OS which you boot daily.

8:40 PM
@allquixotic Still Page File = fast, OS fast, only non-system data is slow. But! Hybrid SSD will start caching that data on SSD part and frequently used data will become fast!

why would the pagefile be fast
The cache is used for often read sectors.

@Boris_yo but if you access some random file on the disk, chances are pretty good that it won't be cached on the SSD
if you play more than one game, or start programs besides just Windows, web browser and MS Office, you won't use the cache as much as light users might
hybrid drives are good for very basic web/email users -- but those users probably can just use a 64 GB SSD and call it done, no hard disk needed

@Hennes Oh so it will be fast to reads but writes would be slow? Okay what do you need to write in Windows Media player, VLC, Winamp, ICQ, Messenger etc?

ICQ? dafuq? are you living in 2004?

Well, an updated program (newer version) will e on another place on the disk. So it will take some time to get fast again.

8:43 PM
@allquixotic No I just didn't find better example...

So using a hybrid hard disk is bad if you are building your own computer.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute it's just not as fast as an SSD or as cheap/capacious as a hard drive, which ends up meaning that it's really the worst of both worlds
it's a compromise, that only works well in a few specific situations, but in most situations it's a poor substitute for either the raw performance of a real SSD or the raw capacity of a real HDD

8:50 PM
@Hennes @allquixotic @AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2593&page=3

especially because the SSD size in those tends to be anemic
a much larger SSD cache might actually make it viable

@allquixotic This is about hybrid drive but what about combining small SSD and 3TB hard drive using Intel Smart Response? Different story.

So the choice among everyone who builds their own computers is to get a large hard disk (somewhere around 1 TB) as well as a SSD (somewhere around 64GB) ?

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute 1 TB isn't a large HDD, and 64 GB isn't a large SSD
I have a hardware RAID controller with two 4TB disks in RAID0 and no SSD
it's fast enough, except for boot
very high sequential throughput

3TB hard disk and what SSD?

if you're going to get an SSD, make it at least 256 GB, unless you don't have any media (music, videos, pictures, games, databases, etc) and no intention to ever download or produce it

If my budget is $700, I am not going to be spending over $200 on hard disk, else I'll have to compromise on motherboard, processor, ram etc.

I installed xenserver 6.2 and was able to install Windows 7 from an iso without any issue. However, whenever I try to boot any type of Linux iso, the VM locks up. Any ideas?

your budget is too small to get a good computer, sorry... at least not by my definition of good
but if you want to build crap, go right ahead

@allquixotic Why 256GB? His budget is limited. He needs at least 32GB SSD.

9:07 PM
lol straight up telling me I should just not build.

9:09 PM
1TB WD Blue HDD - $65
32GB SSD Sandisk - $47

I might run a few games here and there, will probably do some programming (small, not compiling Linux) and other stuff.

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute you don't really need any serious hardware for programming unless you need to actually run the code you're writing and it's going to be very performance-hungry code
but just for writing the code, you could do that on a budget netbook really

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute 30% games, other desktop activities stuff 60% and 10% multimedia?

@Alex did you try any other live CDs? where does it lock up -- before the boot loader, or after?

so in your opinion, what should be my budget to build a decent-to-top-end pc?

9:11 PM
@allquixotic Directly after the syslinux menu. I tried 3 or 4 different Linux distros and they all do the same thing

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute I'd say decent would be around $1100, with anything that could even marginally be called "top-end" costing about $2000 -- the prices go up VERY fast as you start looking at higher capacities, higher performance, larger scale, etc

@Alex did you try any that don't use syslinux? not sure which ones those would be but I'm pretty sure Ubuntu boots using grub

What specs are these?!

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute dude, $2000 is the low end for what you can spend on a top end box

9:12 PM
@all
@allquixotic I'll try it. I think it is in my iso repo

What specs are these $2k computers?

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute I sunk about $2k into my desktop, and I have: Radeon HD7970, 32 GB DDR3-1600, 2 x 4TB 7200rpm HDD, Core i7-3770K, ASUS P8Z77-V, Adaptec 6405E, Corsair HX1000

Like 64gb ram?

@allquixotic Are you sure? A bit high being considered low end of top end box?

you'll notice my RAM isn't the highest possible speed; I have no SSDs; my processor isn't an "Enthusiast" series; my motherboard is mid-range; my RAID controller is the cheapest one from Adaptec; I have only one graphics card; and my PSU can't support more than two graphics cards at most....
a true top-end box could easily cost $5k
four GTX TITANs run $4000 right there

9:14 PM
@allquixotic I would take away: 16GB of RAM and 1x4TB HDD and see how much I can save...

@allquixotic Yeah, ubuntu is hanging. I selected the language then install Ubuntu and nothing happens...

@Alex are there any configuration settings in XenCenter that might talk about boot, or disk controller type, or BIOS, or anything like that?

@Hennes Don't tell me about US dictatorship.

I'll start with i5, don't need i7. Definitely don't need 8tb space, 8gb ram should be solid.

9:15 PM
@Alex I really, really do not have near enough information to help you more specifically -- I need to know everything about how this beast is configured, and I don't have that right now.... so start spewing and I'll listen ;)

if I win the lottery then I am going to buy the US presidency.

@Hennes And become next corrupted good person...

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute 8 GB RAM is not enough to run base OS with a few programs open as well as a virtual machine, which is why I have 32 GB of RAM. I can understand not needing 8 TB of space. but for gaming, it is very hard to skimp much on your graphics card, and even CPU for certain games

meh, I guess that dependsw on what you do in the VM
8GiB is enough to run your base OS and a few VMs with IE6, IE7, IE8 and Ie9 for testing (assigning 500MB per VM)

plus, RAM is the ultimate "SSD cache" -- not only is it orders of magnitude faster than an SSD, but it never wears out, so my system is super fast after I've had it powered on for a little while

9:18 PM
@allquixotic Well it is a 1U supermicro box with an Intel E5-2609 and only 32GB of memory. It has dual 15K SAS 500GB disks in a RAID 0. It has two 10G links and two 1G links. It has a fresh install of xencenter 6.2. I only created one windows VM so far and added an NFS iso repo from another machine.

@Alex that hardware info is all well and good, but I was meaning about the actual XenCenter software configuration

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Get 8GB for beginning if you don't run VM and see how it goes. Make sure motherboard has more than 2 slots for RAM upgrade.

surely when you try to tell it to launch a new VM it lets you configure some settings of that VM?

@allquixotic I also just boot the FreeBSD 9.1 iso no problem and got a shell

uh, dual 2609 boxes will have a few RAM sockets. Probably 8 or more

9:21 PM
@Alex my intuition is telling me that perhaps it has something to do with whether the virtual CD-ROM drive is configured as SATA or IDE

@allquixotic I am only using xencenter to manage it. As for configuring the disks controller and whatnot, I think Xen just uses a generic interface. I don't know what I can tweak. Ive used older versions of xencenter without having to make any large changes besides configuring brigding
@allquixotic I'll take a look

@Alex I've never used XenCenter, so I'm grasping in the dark here trying to figure it out based on my past experience with virtualization products in general

There must be some limit on motherboard, right? I could get one with 4 slots and add like 32gb if ram with cheap 8gb sticks

Linux gurus, anyone got ideas?

you'd probably meet people who have used XenCenter on The Comms Room, but they (officially) don't provide any sort of live support to people needing help

9:23 PM
@allquixotic Ok maybe I'll try there. I don't think Xen lets you specify the interface for devices like that. I don't see any options

@Alex do you know if you're trying to boot your guests as paravirtual or HVM?

Plus, I can't just throw down all money this. 3TB is probably more than I'll ever need. I have a 4 gig ram right now and it isn't too bad. The Max I would consider is 16gb if ram. Going to 32gb would just be crazy, unless I can get it cheap and it doesn't mess stuff up

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute relative to the amount that you'll be spending on just CPU + GPU + motherboard, RAM will be cheap, relatively speaking, even if you get 32 GB
16 GB should be a no-brainer
RAM makes everything faster, there's no downside

@allquixotic I don't specify it. I think that is determined by whatever kernel is being boot. If that kernel supports PV, I think it boots that way otherwise it falls back on HVM

@Alex it might be trying to PV whatever kernel loads on the live CD and failing to PV it properly and just hanging
there might be a way to force it to try HVM

9:26 PM
@allquixotic Maybe. I doubt that Gparted would use PV though... Idk

@Alex technically you can try to boot any domU in PV mode if the kernel was compiled with PV support
which it would be if you're trying to make a very general-purpose kernel

@allquixotic Do you think disabling pagefile with 16GB of RAM make everything faster?

A: Programs minimized for long time takes long time to "wake up"

allquixoticSummary The immediate problem is that the programs that you have minimized are being paged out to the "page file" on your hard disk. This symptom can be improved by installing a Solid State Disk (SSD), adding more RAM to your system, reducing the number of programs you have open, or upgrading to...

9:29 PM
@allquixotic According to 40 upvotes, you seem really nailed here.

@allquixotic I was able to boot RHEL5.9 to the installer. now let me try that link you posted

@Alex Windows doesn't support PV, so we know your HVM support is fine, but the right version of FreeBSD would theoretically have full PV support, so the results are inconclusive

Best buy is selling PNY 8gb RAM for $80. With that base price, 32gb will be like $320.

it seems like you're encountering the freeze when the guest is a certain kernel version of Linux

@allquixotic I didn't think FreeBSD supports PV though

9:31 PM
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute How much 16GB?

@allquixotic I think its something with PV support

@Alex it sure seems to (though your specific live CD might not support it)

Corsair 16gb for $150.

@allquixotic perhaps it isn't build in the FreeBSD kernel on the live disc then

9:33 PM
!!tell 12087773 maybe

@Alex I'm not having much success googling to find that out, and I'm not an active enough FreeBSD user to know off the top of my head
on the other hand, isn't RHEL 5.9 Xen-ready?
(domU, not dom0)

@allquixotic That's fine. What I really need to work is RHEL6 anyway. We don't use that much FreeBSD

@Alex if you're paying for XenCenter and RHEL, you should be able to get some kind of an answer out of either Citrix or Red Hat as to why these two products don't work together -- whether there's some kind of compatibility, or workaround, or patch needed, or if it's just your configuration
at a minimum you can tell Red Hat "I tried X, Y, and Z, and some of them worked, so it must be your thing"
is XenCenter some kind of really old product? because on citrix.com I can't find any reference to XenCenter, only XenServer
all I can find is the open sourced XenServer: xenserver.org

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute I can always endorse Corsair as a fantastic brand for any component, but they're also very expensive; I consider them a "premium" brand -- is there any reason you would rather buy Corsair than a cheaper brand like Komputerbay?
even I who spent $2k on a computer bought Komputerbay RAM, and it works great
wtf.. this is basically the same thing as I bought more than a year ago, and it's more than twice as expensive?!
what, did I buy my RAM at an all-time low RAM price or something? jesus christ
$415... ridiculous
this would work just as well, but it's still $50 more than I paid... wow

There is no reason I would buy one over another. I am just posting what I am finding that I think is cheap. To be honest, I barely know much about computer hardware makers and what's good. I'll take your word for it and if what I posted above is a premium price, then I'm kinda happy since I thought that was a cheap price. Then again, I don't know much, so I don't know what's cheap and what's expensive.

@allquixotic I really liked all the "trying" there :D

@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute from my perspective, $80 for 8 GB is very expensive -- considering I got 32 GB for $200 -- I paid $6.25 per GB; you're paying $10
the Komputerbay 32GB 4-pack I linked above is $7.81 per GB
which is worse than what I paid, but better than what you'd pay for that Corsair, on a per-gigabyte level
getting 16 GB from Komputerbay is actually more expensive per-gigabyte, but the total price is less, and it's still a better per-gigabyte value than that Corsair
if you click the link to the Komputerbay RAM above and click the 16 GB option, it's $130, which is $8.125 per gigabyte -- which is a little high, but nowhere near as bad as that Corsair
if you can afford the $130 for RAM, I'd get the Komputerbay 16GB, because you're saving $1.875 per gigabyte compared to the Corsair 8GB
of course the best total value is still getting 32GB because it has the lowest price per gigabyte that's available (that I know of, and without going to generic nameless RAM that has a very high rate of failure and high risk of purchase)
when I buy components, I don't worry about the total price I'm paying, but the value proposition of how much "stuff" I'm getting for the price I paid
often, at lower price points, you are getting less per dollar that you pay, than you would get if you paid more for more stuff
kinda like how a small softdrink at McDonald's is somewhere like 80% the price of a large one which is twice as big

Microcenter is offering 32 GB for $320, which is bad value

16GB seems to be 125 euro over here. More expensive than I remembered.

...but it's Corsair, so it better freaking work... absolutely premium gear there

My 12 GB (3x4GiB) was 99 Euro, and that was 3 years ago

@allquixotic Thanks for all your help. I'll continue working on this later.

10:00 PM
@Alex no problem, this is really a task that is best resolved in chat, because your Q is essentially troubleshooting -- sorry you had to spend that bounty!
@Hennes seems to me, that all RAM prices have gone up a lot, worldwide

@allquixotic And how you know Komputerbay sources quality RAM? Maybe they just rebrand generic RAM with their name?

Aye

yeah... what happened to the thing that ram was cheap?

even the very good value vendors like Komputerbay are raising prices by 25%

@Braiam Suddenly major RAM factory got burned down. Didn't you hear the news?

10:02 PM
@Boris_yo maybe, but they have a lifetime warranty, so if you get errors, they will replace it....
@Boris_yo is that true? can you find evidence? I know that hard drives increased in price a lot, when a major HDD factory in Thailand got washed away by tsunami
the hard drive market is still recovering from that huge loss
I also got lucky when buying my 4 TB hard drives because I got them before the tsunami.... so lucky overall with this build...
the disks were cheap (considering their size, and current price) as was the RAM
I over-paid for my HD7970 though

@Boris_yo cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat, CHEAT!

@Boris_yo I don't know where they source their RAM from, but they probably get it from Hynix ;-)

@allquixotic Who? This website?
@Braiam What do you mean?

@Boris_yo no, Komputerbay

10:09 PM
@allquixotic So you want to go to Thailand diving so we can find drowned hard drives?

@Boris_yo you... you were reading @allquixotic mind??? O_o

@allquixotic @Braiam If you want more evidence, Google for "memory prices rising"
@Braiam :D

@Boris_yo they won't be much use :(

10:35 PM
weird, if I don't have capslock activated I can only write in caps...

10:47 PM
Pressing caplock sometimes does two things: 1) Switch between caps and regular 2) switch the LED. THose two can get out of sync

Try replugging it maybe.

uhm. No what I wanted to write is "WHAT YOU SAY?"

All your base are belong to us?

LOL DUDE! CAPS SHOW HOW BIG YOU ARE. dUH!

Hey uhm. I filmed a 6-minute video with my phone, and it's 300 MB. What would you recommend to compress it without losing quality (or not too much of it)? I have Adobe Premiere, but to be honest I've never seriously used it.
PS: What is "someone set up us the bomb" in correct English? Can't say for sure.

@Ariane someone made the bomb for us?

IIRC The joke was the poor translation in an old MSX game.

PS again: I've listened to that thing more than once before and only now did I notice that the robot voice in the beginning is actually saying something, and that that something is what is on the screen.
@Hennes Yush I know.
@Braiam Nope, I doubt it. I think it's maybe "someone set up a trap that was a bomb", or "someone threw a bomb on us", or "someone made our own bombs explode".

I should download CentOS6 just so I can write a proper fully tested answer to questions such as these:

Q: RAID1 on existing CentOS6 Install

Alex BlundellI have two 500GB hard drives in my server. Currently, there is no RAID configured, but CentOS6 is installed (as a bare install for now). Is it possible to set up a software RAID-1 so that both drives are mirrored without the need to reinstall the OS? I have access to KVM for emergencies, but I'd ...

What's CentOS?

10:59 PM
A linux distribution (Think deadrat RedHat)

I dunno anything about that. Shrug

Changing a system from JBOD/non-RAID to RAID without reinstalling can be tricky

Oh yeah, I can guess. I meant about Linux distributions.

I barely used any in years. That does not stop me from using common sense to answer questions about them. Same for OS X questions.
E.g. 'permission denied' when doing something which obviously requires root/admin rights. That generally has the same answer. :)
Disabling all of ICMP on either OS -> Ask them if they are fucking nuts

Forget it, I'll delay the computer building stuff for another couple of years until prices decide to go down.

11:08 PM
ICMP?
Also, even common sense questions, I'd be reluctant to answer, if it were Mac OS. Because it tends to completely evade MY common sense.

Internet Control message protocol.
Part of TCP/IP.
Where TCP/IP stands for "TCP, UDP and ICMP" on top of "IP"

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... Yeah I'm not into deep low level stuff like that.

OS X is unix like. So permission denied for a a typical kernel command would require uid 0
Or setuid root/wheel
Which, after some googling, turned out to be true.
Only I knew where to google for. The OP did not

Dunno. I'm cautious about it. That thing usually betrays me with the most total of illogicalities when I think I might finally be starting to understand it.

Aye. Understandable.
I got surpised when I asked the OP to do a locate purge and got a 'locatedb is empty: populate it now?`

11:16 PM
Kinda like Photoshop. Photoshop doesn't have an unpleasant mouse and keyboard though if it's not on a Mac so it's less hateable.

This question is silly. You can't fit nine pigs into a pen. Only ink goes in pens. You have to liquidize the pigs into pig ink, and then you can divide the pig ink equally into four portions. — Crashworks yesterday

Common answer I'd have would be to blink twice and then close the tab.

@CanadianLuke: a lot of the answers are awesome
10 more days of repcaps to the epic badge ;)

Good luck @JourneymanGeek

Don't you think you deserve one?

@CanadianLuke: no idea ;p

Try! Have them fly you to America to celebrate!

Why punish him?
Fly to Canada!

@CanadianLuke all the comments are awesome...

@JourneymanGeek raking in the rep again with his superior heatsink knowledge

Well, if you want rep just answer dumb questions.
But those are not a challenge and thus not fun
