@tohecz Yes, you need to go top down as I did.

Of course, I suppose that people are not typographical molesters and don't use subsection 2.0.2

@tohecz Tohecz, reopened.

@tohecz Some assumption has to be made.

@HarishKumar answered. I happened to still have the MWE in one of my TeXworks windows :)
btw, 351 rep to Paulo's credit card number :)

@tohecz \oalign?

12:06 AM
yep. Is that wrong?
I could use {tabular}[t] as well...
@HarishKumar btw, Hi! :)

12:22 AM
Dammit, i can't get this working
\ce{^$\infty$_{1}Zn[\trans-\bridge{2}(\hapto{3}:\hapto{3}-Ge9)]^{2–}}
and I can't figure out why not
It doesn't 'seem to get the \ce command, but I've got chemmacros loaded
Also I just realized i'm late

12:41 AM
@tohecz Hi and upvoted. :-)

Q: Extract bibliographic references from pdf files to a bib file

icemanIs there a software which can parse pdfs and extract bibliographic references? ACM DL is a web service which can give that info like here: http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=296806.296823&coll=ACM&dl=ACM&CFID=98288669&CFTOKEN=12911537 Mendeley's current release can't do this, would someone co...

10:24 AM
@Canageek you need to escape mhchem's parsing:
\ce{^$\infty$_{1}Zn[\text{\trans-\bridge{2}(\hapto{3}:\hapto{3}-}Ge9)]^{2–}}
see

A: Typesetting transition metal cluster in mhchem?

cgniederThis is a good question! mhchem's manual doesn't mention escaping from its formula parsing which not only sets the 2 as subscript but also transforms the dash (-) into a single bond. It does mention one way implicitly: using $...$. Thus the usual way to prevent mhchem's parsing is indeed to swit...

just realized there's a bug in both \hapto and \bridge :(
@PauloCereda I have a feature request for arara

@cgnieder ooh tell me. :)

@PauloCereda It would be nice if arara would ignore directives that are input after \begin{document}. Currently it doesn't which more than once confused me until I realized it

@cgnieder Ah I see. :) Personally I prefer to add a special directive which tells arara to stop reading directives instead of hardcoding the limit. Say, % arara: halt perhaps?

@PauloCereda would also be a solution
more flexible even :)

@cgnieder arara v4 has it, but I'm not comfortable in releasing it in the wild. :)

10:39 AM
@PauloCereda Oh! Maybe I should beta-test?

@cgnieder Well, I'm very crazy, and it's possible I end up rewriting arara from scratch. :)

@PauloCereda :) sounds like work... and fun?!

@cgnieder As always. :)
@cgnieder: some indication: github.com/cereda/arara/issues/44 :)

11:11 AM
@PauloCereda Nice :)

@cgnieder Too late, you are now in the team. :)

@PauloCereda Oh no! :)
@PauloCereda BTW: I don't know how I could ever live without arara. It makes document creation so much easier

@cgnieder Thanks for the kind words. :) The concept is actually quite simple, but at the end of the day it proves useful. Perhaps Ockam's razor in action. :)

@PauloCereda :) simplicity often is a good thing. Probably one of the reasons arara got a notable user base fast

@cgnieder Indeed. Besides, the key here is automated building, and not automatic building. :P

11:22 AM
@PauloCereda Der Teufel steckt im Detail ;)

@cgnieder Where's the translation button? :P

@PauloCereda It's nearly literally the same in English: »The devil is in the details« :)

@cgnieder ooooh. :)
@JosephWright: that's why I don't have any Mavericks wave wallpaper. :) ^^

11:51 AM
O_o
why hello

12:02 PM
@LordStryker Hello, good sir! :)
/puts monocle

@PauloCereda <o
/puts tophat

@LordStryker like a sir. :)

@PauloCereda indubitably ol' chum.

@LordStryker ooh. :)

So I busted out a mini-research project for a chemistry:se question yesterday chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/6694/…

12:05 PM
@LordStryker I'm illiterate. :)

Oh quick question. Is there anyway to adjust underling spacing (spacing between the underline and the word)? The spacing changes when a word has a letter like the letter p and a word which has no letters that 'dropdown' (so to speak)

Hello @Pedro, welcome to teh chat. :)

Oh, I was wondering where that notification sound came from. Hello!

1 hour later…
1:37 PM
Hi all!

@tohecz Hi Tom! :)

@PauloCereda how do you do, pal?

@tohecz Fine, thanks. :) And you?

@PauloCereda I'm fine, just that I found that not knowing when France has holidays, I didn't plan my journey to Prague quite cleverly, but it's probably not a big deal

@tohecz Ouch. :)

1:43 PM
@PauloCereda well, not really "Ouch", the only thing is that I'll miss one lecture that I needn't miss if I moved my journey by 1 week

kan
2:07 PM
So there is a language H2G2, hmm.

2:42 PM
Stupid question: how do you insert a plain white page?

3:16 PM
Oh my, Pigeon Simulator!
@percusse: ^^

3:30 PM
@PauloCereda quick question: what should be loaded first: fancyhdr or hyperref?

@MarioS.E. fancyhdr

@JosephWright I was doing the opposite and I didn't find any problem, but I just read it in a question of a guy working on a package to load all packages
@JosephWright This one, to be precise: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/123174/…

@MarioS.E. hyperref goes last. :)

@TorbjørnT. :)

3:44 PM
@TorbjørnT. Yeap, I was also looking at that question, but it doesn't mention anything about fancyhdr. :)

4:18 PM
Is there something similar to filecontents in plain TeX?

4:48 PM
@PauloCereda no

@egreg Ouch. :) Thank you!

But it wouldn't be so difficult to create something. Unfortunately the size of these lines doesn't allow…

@egreg Fermat-like. :)

Q: Define a ligature (-> to \rightarrow) in plain TeX

lvaneesbeeckI'ld like to make -> as a ligature to \rightarrow. Is that possible with Plain TeX or has it to do with the loaded font?

I have a poor man's answer in LuaTeX, but it's faulty. :)

5:05 PM
@egreg:

A: Define a ligature (-> to \rightarrow) in plain TeX

Paulo CeredaA humble, faulty attempt, inspired by tohecz, and mainly based on my answer to Censoring Curse Words with Grawlixes: The converter.lua file: symbols = { "%-%>", "%=%>", "%<%-", "%<%=" } replacements = { ["%-%>"] = "\\rightarrow ", ["%=%>"] = "\\Rightarrow ", ["%<%-"] = "\\leftarrow ", ["%<%="] ...

I found the fix:
\newcommand{\cheminfty}{\ensuremath{\infty}}
\ch{^\cheminfty_{1}Zn[\trans-\bridge{2}(\hapto{3}:\hapto{3}-Ge9)]^{2-}}
For some reason it doesn't like $\infty$ so I made a macro. I don't understand why this works.

5:21 PM
@Canageek 'Works for me'
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{chemmacros}
\begin{document}

\ch{^{$\infty$}_{1}Zn[\trans-\bridge{2}(\hapto{3}:\hapto{3}-Ge9)]^{2-}}

\end{document}
with some wrong hyphens :-)

@JosephWright I see, you need the $\infty$ in {}.
@JosephWright I'm making a question about the hypens now

@Canageek Formal LaTeX syntax is sub/superscripts always need braces
@Canageek You'll need to quote ("...")

@JosephWright Ah, I see. Opps. I forgot that, damn I'm rusty.

Does anyone know what does the pdfpagelabels option does in hyperref? the documentation is not very clear

@JosephWright Hmmm? Did I do something wrong?

Q: How do I remove the hyphens from \bridge and \hapto in chemmacros \ch environment?

CanageekI'd like to typeset a chemical formula with both bridging and hapticity. (Specifically the title of this paper). There is a coord-use-hyphen option, but that only works inside the IUPAC environment, not the \ch environment. Here is the (almost) working example of what I want: \documentclass[...

5:27 PM
@Canageek Taking a look now

@Canageek here you're using \ch, your other example had mhchem's \ce. That's a different thing... :)

A sodium and an hydrogen enter a bar and... NaH, nevermind.
@Joseph: ^^ :P
Where's @DavidCarlisle?

@PauloCereda :-)

@PauloCereda Should natbib be loaded after hyperref?

@MarioS.E. I don't know. :) I almost never use hyperref. :)
Wild west guess: no. :)

5:43 PM
@MarioS.E. No

@JosephWright Thanks!. DO know what does the pdfpagelabels option does in hyperref? the documentation is not very clear
*Do you

5:56 PM
@cgnieder Yeah, there is a misleading example in chemformula's manual; I discovered my mistake this morning.
@cgnieder Which probably has something to do with it
@cgnieder So did I help find that bug, or had you already found it?

@MarioS.E. hyperref just provides an interface to the relevant parts of the PDF spec. I don't know of any digestible version of that document. Here's a link, PDF Reference Manual but as I said, that's not very digestible.
@MarioS.E. Here's the relevant part from §12.4.2
Each page in a PDF document shall be identified by an integer page index that expresses the page’s relative position within the document. In addition, a document may optionally define page labels (PDF 1.3) to identify each page visually on the screen or in print. Page labels and page indices need not coincide: the indices shall be fixed, running consecutively through the document starting from 0 for the first page, but the labels may be specified in any way that is appropriate for the particular document.

@cgnieder I tried your example; That adds quotation marks into the file (I am using the updated style sheet.).

6:11 PM
@AlanMunn Thansk! that's exactly what I needed to know

6:31 PM
@Canageek Yes, I found it when I was answering earlier today
@Canageek Did you leave blanks? This works for me:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{chemmacros}
\chemsetup{iupac/coord-use-hyphen=false}
\begin{document}

\ch{^{$\infty$}_{1}Zn[ "\trans-\bridge{2}(\hapto{3}:\hapto{3}-" Ge9)]^{2-}}

\end{document}

6:59 PM
Open question: what is faster? To \RequirePackage{whatever} or to check if the user has actually request it and \Require it if so? I'm asking this because the package lineno has a thing that leaves a lot of commands in the .aux file... and I'm not sure if I should \newcommand these to empty or if I should just load the dam package and forget about it

@cgnieder That works. What do the quotes do?

@egreg: can you enlighten me? :)

7:15 PM
@cgnieder It seems I only thought I'd installed the new version, I'm fixing it now. Also I'm worried I've screwed up the whole thing, so I'm dumping the entire 4.2 tree into my folder now....

@PauloCereda busy:(

@DavidCarlisle Welcome back. :)

7:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle David, hi. Simple question: your package longtable says it requires the array package. Is it loaded automatically?

paulo@alexandria ~$ grep "array" `kpsewhich longtable.sty`
  \@ifnextchar[\LT@array{\LT@array[x]}}
\def\LT@array[#1]#2{%
  \let\LT@@tabarray\@tabarray
  \def\@tabarray{%
    \LT@@tabarray}%
    \let\@startpbox\LT@startpbox\let\LT@LL@FM@cr\@arraycr
    \@height \arraystretch \@tempdima
    \@depth \arraystretch \dp \strutbox
    \unskip\@xargarraycr{#1}%
    \@yargarraycr{#1}%
    \gdef\LT@sep{\penalty-\@lowpenalty\vskip-\arrayrulewidth}%
     \unskip\leaders\hrule\@height\arrayrulewidth\hfill\cr
@MarioS.E. Apparently no. :)

@MarioS.E. it deosn't require array but it uses it if it is there

@DavidCarlisle ooh my grep skills were correct! gasp

@PauloCereda you are supposed to just know these things without grep
@PauloCereda one of my better command names: Leslie or Frank cr: \LT@LL@FM@cr
6

@DavidCarlisle LOL

7:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle Should I explicitly load it_
?

@MarioS.E. if you want to use >{...} syntax then yes, if not then probably not:-)

@MarioS.E. Listen to the master :)

TeeHee, Rapidly coming to the conclusion that the best place to put \usepackage{hyperref} is just after \end{document}.

@percusse Buajajajajaja

@MarioS.E. it depends. If the package is tikz then it loads 100 files and takes half an hour doing stuff, if it is indentfirst then it doesnt. Conversely loadiing tikz probably doesn't have an effect other than taking time if no tikz commands are used, whereas loading indentfirst in itself changes the document layout
@PauloCereda a vim keyboard for android:

8:18 PM
@DavidCarlisle hmmm where?

I'm always installing tons of weird experimental keyboards because it serves as a good reminder that nothing I was going to type was really worth the trouble.

@PauloCereda there^^

@DavidCarlisle oooh LOL :)
@DavidCarlisle Did you see this?

8:41 PM
@PauloCereda Sorry for being late: my sister is here with her two children; and, of course, there was the first half. ;-)
Now the second half, by the way.

@egreg Yay! And of course the uncle is very happy to see them. :)

9:14 PM
@egreg: 4:0 so far. :)

@PauloCereda are we circlejerking emacs/vi again?!
I'M READY! LETS DOOOOO THIS!

@LordStryker The war never ends. :)

1 hour later…
10:29 PM
@PauloCereda A good game, finally!

@egreg Indeed! :)

@tohecz Be careful with \vbox. Don't whine here if they bite you. ;-) You've been warned. :P

@egreg well, thanks. I was thinking about \baselineskip=\mydesiredheight and paragraphs, too, but this seemed to be a bit clearer

haha, speaking of food, I had some nice Laosian dinner today with my Czech friends in Paris :)

10:44 PM
@tohecz You can inhibit interline glue for a group of boxes also with \offinterlineskip (it's a declaration that remains in force in the whole group it's issued in). However there's a difference: between two boxes with \nointerlineskip between them no page break can be taken, while with \offinterlineskip zero glue is inserted, which makes for a feasible page break point.

@egreg well, I'm quite making sure not to have to care about page-breaks here :)

@tohecz I'm glad it wasn't Laosy. ;)

@tohecz Did you think to \halign?

@AlanMunn some English joke, isn't it?

@tohecz If I posted an answer with one vbox with one 2cm rule, would you transfer @egreg's tick to me?

10:47 PM
@DavidCarlisle now that would be a dirty solution

@DavidCarlisle Only if you use picture mode, maybe.

@egreg I'm not sure I'd be able to use it
@egreg in picture mode, it's easy :D

@AlanMunn Yes! :) 25/25. You?

@tohecz Think of a word that would would be pronounced as Laosy would be... (lousy)

@tohecz It depends on what application you have in mind

10:48 PM

A: How to create a lined page with line numbers?

toheczThis seems to work very well: \documentclass{article} \newlength{\linespagelength} \newcounter{linespage} \newcommand\linespage[2][0.4pt]{ \newpage \begingroup \baselineskip0pt \setlength{\linespagelength}{\textheight} \setcounter{linespage}{0} \loop \addtolength{\linespagelength}...

@egreg But don't dare to steal me a green tick ;)

@PauloCereda 23/25. I've never had salpicão or feijão tropeiro.

@AlanMunn Really? :) Both are easy to arrange. :) But 23 is very impressive, I see you have great taste (as usual). :)

@PauloCereda But the list is sorely missing carreteiro and churrasco.

@AlanMunn Agreed. :) If I could add a third item, I'd go with galinhada. :)

@PauloCereda I would add bobó de camarão although maybe that's too close to vatapá.

11:01 PM
@PauloCereda well, I'm afraid that my score is 0 :(

@AlanMunn ooh that's delicious! Now I'm getting hungry again (I already had dinner). :)
@tohecz Come visit me and I'll try to level you up to 18 minimum. :)

@PauloCereda fish and chips?

@DavidCarlisle AMS humour. :)
@AlanMunn Yay! :) That reminds me when I first visited Salvador. We need to know some local slang: acarajé quente and frio. :)

@PauloCereda lol :) If there were such a list of Czech food, I would likely level you as well if you came :)

11:04 PM
So today I've turned a gummy bear into a torch and blow up a 2L beaker. It has been a GOOD day.

@tohecz I wouldn't be able to read the menu though. :) I'd need some extra vowels. <3
@Canageek <- Listen to this guy. :)

@PauloCereda The best part is that while it was only SUPPOSED to blow the lid off the beaker, the prof liked the beaker being reduced to well....

@AlanMunn: my turn:
Song starts at ~0:45.

Shards
Glass is hard to get a good picture of
Oh, and I'm getting a bunch of stuff custom made so I can do a thermite reation
Just need some sand to contain the liquid aluminum

@PauloCereda Right back at you:
Song starts about 1:20.

11:11 PM
@AlanMunn Holy cow! Do you know the guy near João?

@PauloCereda lol
but I think you'd enjoy guláš, svíčková, smažák, halušky, tvarohové knedlíky, ... :)

@PauloCereda Yamandú Costa? Yes.

re we doing the music thing? Ok

@AlanMunn Awesome! Not many people know him. Of course, we have great taste. :)

@Canageek Well actually we're doing the "music that sings about Brazilian food" thing. :)
@Canageek Is this a parody? I can't quite tell.

11:23 PM
@AlanMunn A little of column A, a little of column B as far as I can tell. The song isn't, the music video is
I mean, they write songs about World of Warcraft, so that doesn't really lend itself to taking oneself seriously

@AlanMunn OK, time for a heavy contender: youtube.com/watch?v=tvZaAXkRBaw (please do not show this to Cristina, or she might kill you) :P

@tohecz Without numbers it's easy:
\documentclass{article}
\newcommand{\pageoflines}[1]{%
  \clearpage
  \begingroup\offinterlineskip
  \hrule height 0pt
  \vskip-\topskip
  \leaders\vbox to #1{\vfill\hbox to\hsize{\hrulefill}}\vfill
  \endgroup
  \clearpage}

\begin{document}
\pageoflines{1cm}
\end{document}

I mostly put that up to toy with you lot

@PauloCereda Haha. The anthem of the the farofeiros.

I'm actually listening to this righ tnow

11:25 PM
@AlanMunn Exactly. :)

@egreg oh leaders... :D

Sorry; I don't know of any Brazilian food...we don't have a large South American population either here or where I grew up.

@Canageek Check out the Buzzfeed link I posted above that started the whole thing.
@PauloCereda This is so bad.

@AlanMunn When I am done mopping the floor >.>

@AlanMunn :) This was for the other farofeiros: youtube.com/watch?v=VJNill3YOcs :)

11:28 PM
@Canageek They disable chemformula's parsing and thus prevent hyphens from being turned into single bond and numbers from being turned into subscripts and so on...

@PauloCereda I don't know these guys. They're pretty good.

@AlanMunn They have some nice songs, as well as some terrible ones too. :)

@Canageek That's a lot more interesting than the WoW stuff, for sure.

Yay, 0-scored accepted answer, that hasn't been here for a long time :) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/141499/…

@PauloCereda And while we're doing high and low points on the Brazilian music scene, we can't ignore this gem: youtube.com/watch?v=3AGxfIq8LhE

11:40 PM
@AlanMunn Oh my!

@tohecz on the way to unsung hero (which I have on SO:-)

@DavidCarlisle lol, yeah, well, no, I got an upvote just now

@tohecz Sorry to impede your obscure badge progress. :)

@tohecz You shouldn't have mentioned that question. ;-)

@egreg Exactly.

11:45 PM
@AlanMunn I was referring to the "page of lines" question

@egreg Serves you right for replying to a message about another question. How are we supposed to know? ;-)

@egreg well, it looked like a pain-in-the-arse one, so I thought I would just remove it from the unanswered list ASAP ;)
