Hum. The odd consequence of inserting * automatically in floating point expressions (to support things like (2+3)(4+5)) is that 1.2.3.4 is equal to 1.2*.3*.4=0.144.

@egreg: Today we have a big game! Go Juve! :)
I heard that both Milan and Juve want Van Persie. :)

Q: Babel in ConTeXt(LuaTeX)

kornarosI am interesting in ConTeXt(LuaTeX) but my biggest problem is that I could not translate a simple program from LuaLaTeX, that uses babel, to a corresponding ConTeXt(LuaTeX) one. The code is the following: \documentclass[12pt]{article} \usepackage[polutonikogreek,english]{babel} \usepackage{luate...

Any feeling on this?

I thought polyglossia should be used instead.

10:03 AM
Heya =)

morning @N3buchadnezzar

Short question, is there any easy way to nest enviroments? I want to load an enviroment at the start of a second enviroment.
^^

@N3buchadnezzar sure you can - begin{minipage} .. begin{itemize}

@PatrickGundlach Oh I meant for custom enviroments
Something like

Yay, Java 5, 6, 7 and OpenJDK are now supported! Phew. :P

10:07 AM
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\usepackage{subfig}
\begin{document}
  \newenvironment{myenv}{\begin{itemize}}{\end{itemize}}
\begin{myenv}
  \item foo
  \item bar
\end{myenv}
\end{document}
oopos, sorry for the additional \usepackages

\newenvironment{IntList}[1]{%
\centering
\begin{itemize}
\item Hello
\end{itemize}
\setlength{\columnsep}{50pt}
\begin{multicols}{#1}\begin{enumerate}[itemsep=5pt]}{\end{enumerate}\end{multicols}}

not necessary of course

The itemize is just for the idea, I want to use another environment there of course, but it keep giving me errors.

@N3buchadnezzar Probably something for the main site (show your example)

@PauloCereda There's also Ireland vs. Italy at Dublin (with the egg-shaped ball).

@JosephWright I think its a valid question. But I am probably almost alone with my opinion

@egreg Oh I can't watch it, I don't have ESPN HD. /sob

@PauloCereda LuaTeX doesn't work with polyglossia I think.

@TorbjørnT Oh I really don't know. I still don't use LuaTeX. /scared :)

@PauloCereda You don't? You really don't use LuaTeX? ... no polyglossia does not work with LuaTeX, AFAIK

10:27 AM
I really I can not see the reason why it is not possible to have an environment start and end inside an environment... I tried searching for it, alas I found nothing.

@PatrickGundlach Unfortunately, not yet. :( I know it might sound odd, but I moved to UTF-8 only in this month. I'll try to play more with XeLaTeX first, then delve into LuaTeX. My hope is that I actually like to write stuff in Lua (my first script was a nice experience), so I think LuaTeX will be a natural path. :)

@PauloCereda Got directly to LuaTeX, if you pass XeTeX, don't stop and move forward. (A "community chest" card from Monopoly)

@PatrickGundlach Hm it's tempting. :)
Can we create a TeXpoly, BTW? :)

So the streets are Packages and the train station engines?
"you have an overfull box in your table. Pay 100 demerits to each other player"

@PatrickGundlach LOL!
Instead of jail, we have a "Microsoft Word Training Course". :)

10:37 AM
@PauloCereda Thats evil!

@PatrickGundlach :)

But we can't allow @egreg to play with us, as he instantly wins the game.

@PatrickGundlach haha true! :)

Well, I got to go and do some house cleaning :-) The sun is shining and I can see all the dirt here ... Glad I don't have any friends that can visit me :)

@PatrickGundlach I'd never play that game, if there's that kind of penalty. :)

10:45 AM
@PatrickGundlach Let's all visit you now! I just need to go the airport. :)
We could all play it online. :D

11:18 AM
@PatrickGundlach @PauloCereda @egreg Let us get the TikZ guys to typeset it first:) Will keep them busy for weeks (that includes the money as well):)

@YiannisLazarides haha :)

@YiannisLazarides What should be the most expensive places? \halign and \valign instead of "Park place" and "Boardwalk"?

@PauloCereda We can also ask how it can be done in Lua and keep Patrick busy as well:)

@egreg \futurelet :-)

@egreg Probably catcode:)

11:26 AM
Or perhaps \output

@JosephWright How is your job hunting?

@YiannisLazarides Still working on it. I have money until the end of March (we sold some stuff we've developed, paying me for 1 month and 4 days starting tomorrow!)

@JosephWright Europe is going through tough times at the moment.

@YiannisLazarides Yes, so there is a lot of competition

@JosephWright I am glad that years back sense prevailed and I got out of Academia. Easier to keep your natural curiosity and academic interests as a sideline rather than struggle with salaries and jobs.

11:32 AM
@YiannisLazarides In the UK, chemistry in industry is a lot less safe than in universities. We've seen loads of layoffs in the past 5 years.

@JosephWright Never realized this.

@YiannisLazarides We've traditionally had a strong pharm industry, but several big players have closed their UK sites. Big pharm has some serious problems :-(

@egreg How do you get out of prison ...you need to have an \expandafter:)

@YiannisLazarides Or an \afterassignment

@egreg :-)

11:37 AM
@AndreyVihrov And one is automatically disqualified when drawing the chance with "Interwoven alignment preambles"

@JosephWright Biochemistry though one would think is on the verge of exploding, I was reading the other day of a genome sequencing analyzer that has been compacted on what is effectively a USB stick.

12:12 PM
Wow, I added an answer with vaucanson-g. I feel nostalgic now.

12:26 PM
@PauloCereda Thanks for mentioning that package! Especially good, as the question was generally about LaTeX possibilities

@StefanKottwitz Thanks! :) That package gave me nightmares in the past. :P
Though I still don't know how to customize stuff with it. :)

12:47 PM
Gah
I hate when something works in one document, and fails in another. Even though the code is the same
:/

1 hour later…
2:14 PM
Can anybody see what is going on here? It appears that LuaLaTeX can't handle \mathaccent "7416, but can handle \mathaccent "7016. I don't know where to lookup what are the families 0 and 4, though.

Q: Why does fontspec change the maths accents (and only with lualatex)?

MatsayaIn the minimal example that follows luatex doesn't place the accent correctly (it's too far left): \documentclass{minimal} \usepackage{fontspec} \setromanfont{Linux Libertine O} \begin{document} \(\bar E\) \end{document} But if I compile it with xelatex, or with lualatex and \setromanfont{Lin...

1 hour later…
3:25 PM
@AndreyVihrov It seems to me like a bug in LuaTeX
LuaTeX uses \Umathaccent, while XeTeX uses \accent, that's the only difference.
The math families seem OK

@egreg Looking closer, I see that LuaTeX places the accent with zero shift related to E. But how does loading Linux Libertine trigger this?..

@JosephWright I think I found a use for all those TikZ chem drawing packages: I think using them might be simpler then drawing this by hand: stuartcantrill.com/2012/02/22/my-chemdraw-hell
@egreg Is Peter Wilson another name I should know?

@Canageek Author of memoir.

@TorbjørnT I've heard of that a bunch, but never figured out the point of it. It is a document class, right?

@Canageek Yep. It has much more features than the standard classes. For example, instead of loading fancyhdr to change headers/footers, memoir has similar features included.

Q: What are the strengths and weaknesses of KOMA-Script and memoir?

xportTo make a professional book layout, many people suggest to use either KOMA-Script or memoir. Let me know the strengths and weaknesses of each please.

3:36 PM
@TorbjørnT What is the advantage of moving to it if I already have a fancyhdr ...nevermind reads

@AndreyVihrov The strange thing is that I get the same figures from \showlists. This is LuaTeX but it doesn't shift!
\vbox(8.20554+0.0)x7.95831, direction TLT
.\hbox(5.67776+0.0)x0.0, direction TLT
..\OT1/cmr/m/n/10 ^^V
.\kern-4.30554
.\hbox(6.83331+0.0)x7.95831, direction TLT
..\OML/cmm/m/it/10 E
This is XeTeX
\vbox(8.20554+0.0)x7.95831
.\hbox(5.67776+0.0)x0.0, shifted 2.31252
..\OT1/cmr/m/n/10 ^^V
.\kern-4.30554
.\hbox(6.83331+0.0)x7.95831
..\OML/cmm/m/it/10 E

@Canageek I've never really used it much myself, so there's not much I can say.

@TorbjørnT Interesting how most of the answers seem to like KOMA-Script more, but I hear about Memoir a lot more.
Too bad there isn't some way of accessing a big database of LaTeX documents to determine the popularity of diffrent packages. Wonder if MikeTeX keeps download logs for the 'install on use' feature?

4:02 PM
Heya

@Canageek If you read through the comments you'll find a bit of discussion of the English documentation of KOMA (which is pretty awful). I think many of the KOMA fans have the luxury of reading the German documentation. Some people are also attached to KOMA's letter class, which again is matter of taste, since many of us don't bother with letter classes at all for letters. Memoir is excellent for book length projects and e.g. ones like a thesis where you may need to meet specific requirements.

4:25 PM
@AlanMunn Ah, thank you

5:22 PM
@StefanKottwitz TeX Live 2009/Debian will probably remain our nightmare for the next ten years.

I'm looking at the very first lines of l3bootstrap and see lines like \catcode ``\{ = 1 \relax. What does \relax do here? Neither Plain or LaTeX2e have it, and there's nothing like a digit following.

@egreg At least it's a very easy way for Debian/Ubuntu users to install TeX using the package managing they are used to.
@egreg Sadly, Norbert doesn't get much help in packaging.

@AndreyVihrov Don't forget that in the programming environment spaces are ignored. However \catcode and \chardef are unexpandable, so I see the necessity of \relax only in the last line; however one might have redefined \catcode … But, when the definition is performed, spaces still count.
So it's probably just a precaution.

@egreg It's the very first line to be read by IniTeX, so spaces are not ignored

@AndreyVihrov Yes, that's what I think. But the format creation file might input something before this file.

Good afternoon! Has biber stopped working for anyone else? I've just recently updated with TLU and biber seems to not work anymore. I get this error: i.imgur.com/PNLgW.png

Is the following question too localized? With the following example I get the warning "test.pgf-plot.gnuplot", line 2: ';' expected. How can I avoid this?
% !TEX program  = pdflatex --shell-escape
% !TEX encoding = UTF-8 Unicode
\documentclass{standalone}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}[axis equal image,width=10cm,axis lines=none,]
\addplot3 [raw gnuplot,mesh] gnuplot [mesh]{
   set parametric;
   set pm3d explicit;
   set pal rgb 9,9,3;
   unset colorbox;
   unset key;
   unset border;
   unset xtics;
   unset ytics;
   unset ztics;
   set hidden3d;
   set surface;
   set ticslevel 0;
   set size square;
   set view 60,210,1.5,1;

5:50 PM
@MarcoDaniel It's not localized too if you would ask for a general explanation, what this warning means and how that can be fixed, and give your code as example for that issue.

@StefanKottwitz Thanks

@CJF It happens from time to time (and it's something the developers should solve). Go to the terminal and type rm -rf /var/folders/kb/3; hit the TAB key for autocompleting the directory name as in the message and hit RETURN. Now Biber will recreate a folder and work until the next time it blocks. :(

@egreg: You always seem to save the day. Thanks so much. :)

6:10 PM
@CJF Been there, done that. :)

6:21 PM
@egreg Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. :-)

6:48 PM
I can't believe how poorly an app is rendered with GTK3. On the other hand, on my Mac... <3

7:11 PM
@PeterGrill I don't think it's a good idea to encourage the use of \it etc. by using them in your titlepage answer.

@AlanMunn: I thought it was ok since it was within a group. So should I replace it with \textit instead?

@PeterGrill See the linked question in my answer. The proper replacement of \it is \itshape if you're using it as a switch or \textit{} if you intend it as a command.

@AlanMunn: Thanks. Have corrected it.

8:14 PM
I am having some problems when inputing files. how can I post a MWE with a input file as a example?

@N3buchadnezzar How long is your MWE? You can paste it here (indent with 4 spaces) or put it on pastbin or a github gist or something

It is just that hyperlinks break if I input something between the the hyperlink and hypertarget
Input as in include files there
@PatrickGundlach =)

8:33 PM
 \documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\begin{document}
  \hypertarget{name1}{Target 1}
  some text
  \hypertarget{name2}{Target 2}
  \hyperlink{name1}{Jump to 1}
  \clearpage
  \hyperlink{name2}{Jump to 2}
\end{document}
works fine. You should make a minimal working example

@PatrickGundlach If I make it more minimal then I am not able to use it, some of the problem lies in making it work with my current setup... Not making it work under ideal circumstances

@N3buchadnezzar Try to reduce your file until the problem goes away. That always works (at least for me, it did)
That is what someone else would do.

@PatrickGundlach Like I said I found the problem
The problem is when I input files between the two linked parts...

@MartinScharrer: Are there any automatic means of inserting a question link with the question's title as the link text? (With regard to your edit.)

@N3buchadnezzar Ok, misunderstood that part, sorry

8:37 PM
But I do not know how to include any files in a MWE...

@N3buchadnezzar Do you mean the filecontents environment?

@AndreyVihrov I think I found it after a bit of searching, thanks =)

@N3buchadnezzar A normal \input works fine
@N3buchadnezzar Now I am curious, what was the problem?

@PatrickGundlach If I knew I would have fixed it ^^
Seems like hyperref is still broken, even after not including any files, Hmmm.

9:43 PM
@PauloCereda Fright. :)

@egreg Indeed. :) Thankfully Juve played better in the second half. :P

@PauloCereda Somewhat lucky that the second goal wasn't seen. :)

@egreg Even with the ball entering about half meter, Buffon was fantastic. :)
Conte should have started with Matri/Vučinić instead of Quagliarella/Borriello. :)

@PauloCereda I still don't know why he chose them. Well, 24 straight games without a loss: he should know.

@egreg Indeed. :) Despite Bonucci's error, the defense was very solid with Barzagli and specially Chiellini. And Mexes should've got a red card. :)

1 hour later…
11:20 PM
Grrrr! Fighting with microtype & XeTeX! Don't want LuaTeX (no \XeTeXglyphbounds3), nor PdfTeX (no fontspec). Waaaaah!
TeeHee, Rapidly coming to the conclusion that the best place to put \usepackage{hyperref} is just after \end{document}.
