@MετάEd Then try giving us a hard one.

Q: Questions about the expression- 'Many'

user54887i wonder how to distinguish different types of expression referring to "Many" such as A LOT OF, A NUMBER OF, A WHOLE BUNCH OF, A GREAT DEAL OF, A FEW, NUMEROUS, a host of...... In fact, i can use them most of time in a proper way, but i am still quite tired of differentiating them before i want t...

What is going on there.
Cosmic justice?
The answer suits the question to a tee.
@Robusto I see a stupid door and I want it painted now.

@RegDwigнt That's a bingo!
And that's just for starters! Wait till you get to assload, shitload, ass-ton, shit-ton, etc. — Robusto 40 secs ago

And then one day you receive a shit-ton of an assload.

Just as long as it wasn't C.O.D.

It was M.I.A. at one point.

9:08 PM
@Robusto red & black

@JohanLarsson That is the true bingo.

@JohanLarsson clearly you never listened closely to what Chris de Burgh sings.

OK, we're gonna go a little deeper. Gimme a sec.

Ewwww.

I like gimme shelter, are the background vocals ♫ rape, murder ♫ btw?

9:10 PM
Just tryin' ta do this ________ before it _____ anymore.

So last week I zapped into Dexter. The early seasons. Season 2, actually, which I always considered to be the best after Season 4. And I tried to watch it. And it was unwatchable.
BB has ruined television for me.

It's at least ruined Dexter.

Dexter was severely broken. But they utterly destroyed it with the ending.

What would you call this piece of clothing?

9:11 PM
@Cerberus Chemise?

I never watched Dexter

Really?
I didn't even know you used that word in English.

You know like, you listen to a good song, you've been listening to it all your life, and you really like it, and then one day you hear Johnny Cash sing it and you can't listen to the original ever again because it sucks.

How about blouse? Would you ever call it a blouse?

The term chemise or shift can refer to the classic smock, or else can refer to certain modern types of women's undergarments and dresses. In the classical usage it is a simple garment worn next to the skin to protect clothing from sweat and body oils, the precursor to the modern shirts commonly worn in Western nations. Etymology Chemise is a French term (which today simply means shirt). This is a cognate of the Italian word camicia, and the Spanish / Portuguese language word camisa (subsequently borrowed as kameez by Hindi / Urdu / Hindustani), all deriving ultimately from the Latin cami...

9:11 PM
@RegDwigнt I have not listened to him much, should probably do something about it

@Cerberus Well, it's a little too casual for a blouse. But I could be wrong.

@Robusto the point is, it wasn't broken back when I watched it. Except it was but I was blind. It's only apparent to me now.

@Robusto For me, a blouse has to have sleeves of some kind, and it opens at the front.

@RegDwigнt So Breaking Bad upped your TV IQ. Don't talk about it like it's a bad thing.
@JohanLarsson Start here:

I personally prefer the term "skimpy girl thingy".

9:13 PM
@Robusto but that's Cash?

I mean, I like zapped into it, and the very first scene made me physically uncomfortable. Dexter's holding a piece of paper with some addresses on it, and the third one is circled, and he looks down at it standing in a street, and it's all fine but then. The voiceover. "I was at the third address on my list."

Yep. So's this.
And this.
I'm sticking with top hits. He goes pretty deep.

Like, they always teach you "show, don't tell". And the crap shows are "tell, don't show". But Dexter is "show and tell". Really the worst of both worlds.
And I frigging never noticed that.
And that's just one thing. The rest of it is just like that. It's all completely In Your Face.

I think I like the cover Hurt best of all the things Cash did. REALLY like his broken voice in the end.

Not just the writing. Also the acting, the lighting. The everything.
It is so chock full of "this is the scene where"s.

9:15 PM
@RegDwigнt Surely we've spoken about this before?

@Robusto yeah no, see that was not that long ago, and I thought they had the last Dexter season in mind, and they probably did.
I dropped out after season 4 and always considered that a wise move, but it turns out it was only wise, but not the wisest.

@RegDwigнt And the thing is, there are so many great moments in Breaking Bad that just fly right by in their subtlety. And they become fridge moments. You suddenly think, God damn it, that's what that meant!
Like Skinny Pete playing Chopin at the Guitar Center when he and Badger were going to get roadie cases for Walt & Jesse. And you see clearly, in two and a half seconds, how meth has wasted this kid's life.

@Robusto yeah. I mean, make no mistake, the good shows are full of "this is the scene where"s, too. In fact if they are any good they must be only "this is the scene where"s and nothing else. It's just that they are going about it in a somewhat more subtle way.
They never go, "this is the scene where we establish that Romeo and Juliet are in love". Or "this is where we must kill off Mercutio just to drive the story forward somehow".

Breaking Bad is like a magician who does card tricks with all the cards face up on the table—and he still fools you.

And Dexter is like its own storyboard.

9:20 PM
Yeah. They ran the storyboard.

Of course it's not helping that I have to endure Rita again.
Every single damn woman on that show was in-your-face annoying.

@RegDwigнt Why are you watching Dexter? Can't you jerk off or play the accordion or something? Take up bonsai?

Actually I do play the accordion. While jerking off. But it only lasts you so long.

Bonsai I might consider.

9:23 PM
@RegDwigнt Well, those two things are the same. But I digress.

Oh and FFS he had the chance to kill off Debra. I so totally forgot all about it.
He should have. That would've been a great show.

Dexter is such a fucking Boy Scout. He gives serial killers a bad name.
15 mins ago, by Robusto
Just tryin' ta do this ________ before it _____ anymore.

I'm stuck on that one, still Stones?

The thing is, Dexter is always talking about his dark passenger and the dude is like a scoutmaster.
@JohanLarsson Yeah, from the exact same album as Sympathy for the Devil.

@Robusto Just tryin' ta do this door before it crumbles anymore.

9:27 PM
@RegDwigнt Ognib.

@Robusto now that's a show I'd watch. "I think my son has the scoutmaster in him". "Daddy, I feel a dark presence in me. Almost like a scoutmaster". "Confirmed. My son does have the scoutmaster in him."
2

Heh.

@Robusto barn ... pink.

Dexter had a chance in Season 7. If they'd gone all seriously dark and sick and "Hey, Hannah, I love killing people with you and then fucking your eyeballs out," then it could have gotten good. But they went another way.

@Robusto there were times I'd listen the hell out of that song. This arrangement. There's another one, a la-la-world happy-go-lucky arrangement. Never was a fan of that one. But this one here gives me teh goozebums every single time. It is inconceivable how much it does with a single keystroke. Unpossible.

9:31 PM
I'll steal your mistress from under your nose / I'll go easy with your cold fanged anger ♫ And you supply the next line.
@RegDwigнt Yup. He was so basic.

@Robusto nice, don't think I hear it before, ty sir.

Oh, and in honor of his passing:

@Robusto no idea, don't want to cheat

Oh and BTW, RIP Lou Reed.

That's my point.

9:34 PM

I should write a scraper to scrape out all music of this chat
4

@JohanLarsson Um, it's like only maybe the best Rolling Stones song ever

dunno if that is a breach of TOS

They're not in this chat. They're on YouTube.

@Robusto yeah I hadn't read your point at that point. I'd only seen the banana and thunk of Lou. Funny how tworks.

9:36 PM
@RegDwigнt ". . . when I'm closing in on death / You can't help me, not all you guys / Or all you girls with all of your sweet talk / You can all go talk a walk / And I guess that I just don't know / And I guess that I just don't know"

I meant something that compiles a linkcollection

@JohanLarsson The Incomprehensible Room Original Soundtrack! I love it!

Not very original.
All stolen, in fact.

@RegDwigнt That's the beauty of it.
It's just a beautiful lie.

@Robusto I have gaps, huge gaps

9:41 PM
Apparently. It's OK, we'll sort you out.

@Robusto to this day I don't know what to think of that movie.

I would probably fail at writing a scraper also :D
because it would be so web with strings everywhere
Would make me nervous > sad > void

@RegDwigнt I think it's very funny. A great send-up of the movie industry by a true comic genius.

I'd have to rewatch. I don't remember any of it. I do remember that it was very, very weird.

It's such a perfect satire.

9:49 PM
What was that show we once talked about...
That one was more like it.
This one tried so much all at once.

Which show? I need more.

I'm a big fan of Steve Martin's, BTW.
So that's the background.
@Robusto Hollywood satire. With that one guy in the main role who only ever has supporting roles anywhere else. I am embarrassed that I don't remember his name.

@JohanLarsson And let's not forget the best cover of a Stones song ever. IMHO.
@RegDwigнt Jay Mohr?
Action is an American comedy series about a Hollywood producer named Peter Dragon, who is trying to recover from his last box-office failure. It aired on Fox during the 1999-2000 season. The series was critically praised for its irreverent, and sometimes hostile look at Hollywood culture. Thirteen episodes were produced. The show was created by Chris Thompson and the show runner was Don Reo. Future Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte was the story editor for twelve episodes, and wrote two. Main cast Peter Dragon, played by Jay Mohr, is the head of Dragonfire Films. Peter got hi...

Yes. Thank you.
This was killing me.
I mean come on.
I couldn't remember anything.

Did you ever watch it?

Mar 8 '11 at 12:36, by Robusto
You've seen Action!

@JohanLarsson Yeah. That is a really powerful performance.

I must have watched it if I saw it.

@RegDwigнt I don't remember chat mentions from 2.5 years ago. I know, it's probably a form of dementia, but I'll just have to live with that.

Mar 8 '11 at 12:38, by RegDwight
That's the thing. I can't watch him in any other shows/movies. I can't stand him in any other movies. He appears so freaking miscast in any other role. I always have to think of Peter Dragon.

Yeah. He's insufferable as anything but a gigantic asshole.

9:55 PM
@Robusto it's okay if you know it's a form of dementia. You'll forget in 30 months.

That's the beauty of forgetfulness.
One day I'll forget I was ever a huge rep whore on EL&U. The thought makes me smile.

I'll remind you. The thought makes me smile.

Mahlzeit.

Q: Number To Reach You At

johnchuSome question about two common phrases on application forms: Please provide a phone number best to reach you Please provide a phone number best to reach you at Is one of them wrong? Is "at" necessary?

This looks like our old friend.
@simchona

I only see "user deleted".
I wondered about him earlier today but wasn't sure. Gave him a second chance and he promptly delivered.

@RegDwigнt Posted a new question, then reposted a deleted question when that one got through. He is testing the system.

Ah yeah, I was just looking at the same one as MετάEd.
There was another one from 16 hours ago that was more obviously his.

@MετάEd Nah I'm not so sure. He just posts his usual stuff under whichever account is still active.
Gotta run!

10:23 PM
Oo-hoo, witchy woman! See how high she flies.

10:43 PM
You've been singing all day, @MετάEd.

@KitFox I'm in the mood for a scare.

Looking forward to Halloween?

@KitFox You bet.

I can't remember if you liked the story. I think I talked to Mr.Shiny about it right after you.

I have a morbid sense of humor ... it's my favorite time of year.
@KitFox Yes, I thought it turned out well!

10:45 PM
@MετάEd Me too!
@MετάEd I really appreciate your brilliance for the punchline.
I was thinking on my way home about how I could ask a person who knows how long it takes DNA to degrade in an unrefrigerated human pinky.
Without sounding creepy.
Hey, you might think this is funny then. I sure did.
My father died while I was in transit, so my family asked the funeral home to wait to do the final preparations so that I could see him and have closure.
When I got home, we went to the funeral home, and nobody else wanted to go downstairs with me to the "visitation room", so I went by myself. The funeral attendant lady showed me where the door was and left me some privacy.
I spend my time doing the things I need doing, then walk by upstairs where my family is all clustered with the attendant. They look very uncomfortable. She looks calm and sympathetic.
She says, very kindly, "Was everything alright?" and I said, "Um, yeah, except that wasn't him."
The look on her face was totally worth her hating me for pranking her.

@KitFox omg

Because of course it was him. I let her off the hook pretty quickly.
It was kind of mean, but I was bereaved.

@KitFox Right, what's she going to do, go off on you?

I like to think that she tells that story as an example of the most awful person she's ever met.

ha! Or maybe just an example of strange ways people deal with death.

10:55 PM
More likely that. She was really excellent with the funeral stuff.
We joked that we put the 'fun' in 'funeral'.
My dad would have gotten a good laugh out of that prank too, I'm sure, which was part of the motivation.

@KitFox See, now that's nice. Something the two of you would have enjoyed together.

Yeah. I wasn't intending to be cruel.

I always feel like ... somebody’s watching me

hahaha
Did you ever read the story I wrote about my father's death?

@KitFox I don't know if I did.

11:02 PM
Five Months In Purgatory. It's sad, but one of my better works. Well, truer, anyway. Five pages.
If you feel like reading it.
I have to put my sons to bed. Later.

11:31 PM
Well, I shouldnta re-read it.
Now I want to edit it. Again.

user58869
11:53 PM
@KitFox is that a poem?

Five pages of poem? No.

user58869
@KitFox i read a little of the first page

user58869
i've never quite understoon what poems are

Well, it's narrative prose, not poetry.

user58869
oh

11:55 PM
Poetry tends to have regular meter, although it doesn't have to.
Why are you in so many chat rooms?

user58869
why not

Well, you can't be following that many conversations.

user58869
@KitFox should i leave a few?

shrugs Do what you like.

user58869
@KitFox i guess that's what i was doing when i joined all those chat rooms, your the second person to ask me about it
