@papiro: How were you able to review a "First Post" 6 hours after it has already been reviewed?

9:04 AM
@Werner I think you should direct this question to the software developers...

@JosephWright this is probably a question for you:
@{cgnieder,JosephWright}: It works alright with the \pdftex_strcmp:D function. But on the expl3 doc, you can read that "D [...] means: Do not use. This special case is used for TEX primitives. Programmers outside the kernel team should not use these functions!" On the interface3 doc there is but the shortest comment made on this function. Is it fine using it? What are the plans for the l3sort module in the short-term? Is it going to be bundled with the other "regular" expl3 modules and thus not need to be loaded as an extra package? — Marcos 5 mins ago

@cgnieder Yes, it probably is. I'll reply in the comments

Can someone show me how I can write in LaTeX a figure similar to this ? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/135605/neighbourhood-diagram

2:58 PM
Guys, how can I avoid a spurious space in a new environment? I always forget...

@PauloCereda Add \ignorespaces at the end of the <begin> part.

@egreg Ouch, thank you. :) I always forget. :)
@egreg: a math question coming from a newbie: do you prefer \emptyset or \varnothing? :)

@PauloCereda The former.

@egreg Thanks. :)

@PauloCereda \varnothing is better for denoting the diameter of pipes. ;-)

3:07 PM
@egreg aaah. :)

I have a question: how do we place a figure in a specific location in LaTeX
I place the code in a certain location but it is situated somewhere elses compare to the code

@Carpediem What do you mean? In the upper right corner of the page, for instance? If it's about the figure environment, it's normal that it's shifted away from the “ideal” point for space reasons; the caption has precisely the purpose of providing the necessary description even if the figure is detached from the “ideal” place and the caption number is used for referring to it.

3:32 PM
@egreg So there is no way of placing a figure in a specific location ?

@Carpediem If you prefer to get awful looking documents, yes.

3:49 PM
@egreg: my Concrete Mathematics book had arrived yesterday. Another jewel of the Knuthian humour. :)

@PauloCereda Probably I'll buy it too; currently I have a rather poor Italian translation.

@egreg I have both (original and PT-BR translation). :)
@egreg: the book is available for free: maths.ed.ac.uk/~aar/papers/knuthore.pdf
But I need paper. :)
(Wait for @David to call Greenpeace because I'm a tree killer) :)
Friends, I"m using amsart for the first time. Is there any way to suppress the author name display in all pages?
\author[]{...}
This is so dirty. :)

4:16 PM
@PauloCereda oneside?

@egreg OMG
@egreg: How do you know that much? :)

@PauloCereda Maybe I have used it, sometimes.

@egreg Ah that explains it. :) Not like @David and longtable. :)

@PauloCereda During the half-time interval of today's match, I switched to another channel; there was a cricket match. "What are they doing?" asked my dad.

@egreg Your dad is a wise man. :) I wonder what you told him. :)

4:22 PM
@PauloCereda “Ask my friend David”. Unfortunately my dad doesn't understand English, but he wouldn't understand the explanation anyway.

@egreg :)
@egreg: yesterday I was waiting for a friend to call, and I was watching ESPN. There was a program talking about baseball, football and basketball. I was so confused, specially with baseball. :)
@egreg: Speaking of Juve, there's something that really bothers me when some local news talk about the vecchia signora: they say o Juventus instead of a Juventus (masculine vs. feminine article). There once was a small team in SP named Juventus, probably as an homage to Juve, but the team is no more. That one was referred as o Juventus. :)

@PauloCereda Actually it is “Juventus Football Club”. In Italian the name prevails, and “gioventù” is feminine in Italian.
In the same way, “Inter” (short for “Internazionale”) is feminine.

5:11 PM
@egreg Not sure what you meant by mixing environments here?

5:53 PM
@jtbandes XeTeX and pdfTeX

6:26 PM
@egreg Ah I see. I guess my ideal font setup would work with either one

7:13 PM
Hello guys, greetings from Italy (Viareggio)

7:25 PM
@MarcoDaniel Hallo! :)

@MarcoDaniel Not a great weather, I'm afraid: I saw a bit of the cycling race in Florence and they were very wet.

Hi, I try to repair the old dirty tex code of a book. svn.mccode.org/svn/McCode/trunk/doc/manuals/mcstas After adding the hyperref package I get many many errors like Missing number, treated as zero ...n 1.0 as presented in Ref. ~\cite{nn_10_20} I tried a lot to find out what causes this, but have no Idea what else to try now. The errormessage does not tell me a lot... Any good strategy?
I commented out 90% of the book and it seems to come from the \cite

@JonasStein Can you try making up a minimal example? Chasing through several files is not the funnest thing to do. ;-)

sure sure... that was what I try to do here for my self... As you know its a lot of work to create a MWE from a book that only includes the bug...

@JonasStein However, citesort is suspicious; try using cite that seems to be a better version of those Donald Arseaneau's macros.

7:33 PM
Thats what i needed thx
Do you know from heart, if its ok to substitute citesort with cite?
% commented out citesort and it compiles!

@egreg Indeed. Today there was a thunderstorm. However it's a great place. Tomorrow we will drive to Pisa.

I guess I should have asked you here several hours earlier.. But I was not brave enough without MWE
;-)

@MarcoDaniel Be careful with the Tower. ;-) It's a great place: small town full of beauties, not only the great square with the Cathedral.

8:16 PM
@egreg Thanks for the hint. Our hotel reservation in Verona was canceled as a result of the trade fair. So were at/on/in the Garda lake ;-)

@MarcoDaniel :(
Plans to come to Venice or nearby places?

1 hour later…
9:31 PM
@PauloCereda don't add a space in the wrong place.

@egreg Unfortunately not. After Pisa we will drive to Rome and then my vacation will end :-(.

9:58 PM
@DavidCarlisle :)
@MarcoDaniel You are driving in Italy? Oh my. :) @egreg: watch out. :P

@PauloCereda Yesterday some crazy Porsche driver overtook me at probably 190/200 km/h. I could only glimpse the plate, which was Italian. The problem is that it's difficult to see the plate in the mirrors, but usually if there's nobody behind you and a few seconds later you're overtaken, it's a German car.

@egreg Oh my!
Marco has a Lamborghini, so it wasn't him. :)
