2:01 AM
@Twink Here

thank you :$
in which chapter are you now?

@TedShifrin

why are you taking that cours if you already know all of that?

@Twink I don't know it all.

but the most part

2:03 AM
@Twink Yes, true.

why does one have to prove that $0$ is in a subspace to prove it's a subspace?
with the property of multiplication by scalars is enough
that implies $0$ is in the subspace

@Twink Well, you need nonemptyness.
$0\in S\implies S\neq\varnothing$.
Conversely, using the other properties $S\neq\varnothing\implies 0\in S$.

ok :D
why are you taking a course where you know almost everything?
is it only because you have to take it?

@Twink Right.

I bet you're the smartest in all your courses

2:07 AM
@TedShifrin Checking how this $\partial^2=0$ thingy works. =)
@Twink I don't know. I worry about myself.

:D
but you studied all of that by yourself?
before taking the course?

@Twink I study by myself a lot, yes.

and you do the exercises too?
or you only read the theory?

@Twink I usually do exercises too.

wow I admire you

2:14 AM
@Twink Meh. =)

@Pedro What are you studying?

you're so modest xD

@JohnWilson Taking Linear Algebra, Analisis II and a course on Seq. and Series, and studying some Number Theory and the details of topics in the courses by myself.

@Pedro So you self-study like me.
:)

@JohnWilson Aha. But I do attend university.

2:18 AM
@Pedro I quit high-school
lol

@JohnWilson Why?

hi professor Ted

@TedShifrin You're just hoping in and out!

@I'm auditing a course at a university.
@Pedro School was too fast for me.

@JohnWilson But, how will you get to uni without school?

2:19 AM
@Pedro They went through the topics really fast. I could not digest the material really fast.

@JohnWilson Where you low on enzymes?

And hopping, too :) on the iPad I can't multitask.

@Pedro You can still go to University without high shcool diploma
@Pedro well at least where I live.

@JohnWilson Didn't know that.
Not here.

@Pedro OH !
@pedro I'm trying to raise my SAT score though.
@ You know SAT in your country?
@Anyhow, I'm trying to self study mathematics.

2:21 AM
I wonder why mathematics are like this, even you study and study you can't succeed if you don't have some insights to make the tricks. It's not like some other sciences, you read the information very well and you'll be good, you'll have a A+ on your exams, just reading, but not in math, if you don't come up with the ideas on your exam, you're lost xD

@I'm doing my best how proofs are formated.

@JohnWilson We don't have that.
We have a final average through highschool though. But it doesn't really matter.

@Pedro: I never teach the chains stuff for Stokes's Theorem. That can wait for algebraic topology. :)

@Well, I'm trying to get into college without a highschool transcript with grades.
@PedroTamaroff I just quited high school a few months ago.

Yes, @Twink, one can get through lots of college by just memorizing and not understanding/thinking, but it's hard to do that in math.

2:23 AM
@TedShifrin What does the integer in front of the cube mean? As in summing them with integer coeffs? Why not arbitrary coeffs?

@TedShifrin Yes, I agree with you Ted. I am not a student at this college were I audit course for free, meaning I sit in class and watch lecture.
@TedShifrin I see kids just copying the examples from the text

You could do general coeffs. But for integral homology one allows only $\Bbb Z$.

@TedShifrin Instead of attempting to understand the concepts.

@PedroTamaroff do you like Miley Cyrus?

Yup. Although to a certain extent one learns by mimicking (while thinking).

2:25 AM
It's more like drills.

@TedShifrin I don't understand that, Ted! XD

They drill these problems in hour heads!

@Twink I don't care. =)

what do you mean you don't care?
do you like her or not

cannot give an answer too that question.

2:27 AM
@JohnWilson I'm almost done writing it up

Answers to life are not always Yes or No. Sometimes it's Yes ,no , maybe, not sure.

Homology is about cycles ($\partial =0$) mod boundaries ($\text{im}\,\partial$).

@TedShifrin do you like Lady Gaga?

@KevinDriscoll Thanks Kevin :)! It seems like you worked hard this problem! I wish I could give you a cookie ! Well, a virtual cookie.

No knowledge @Twink. I'm way too old.

2:28 AM
Haha it wasn't hard it just takes a bit to LaTeX everything

@TedShifrin I mean, what is the meaning of summing cubes.

just make sure to upvote and accept my answer if you like it @JohnWilson

you're not old
and I think you must know who Lady Gaga is

Yes, but first I need to understand it lol

everybody knows
she's on the news

2:29 AM
I will ask questions if I do not understand something.

@Twink I don't care about what Miley Cirus does, really.

it's Cyrus
you misspelled her last name

Twink are you lonely?

why?

You are talking about random things on this chat. I don't know I'm just geussing.

2:30 AM
@Pedro: Think of wanting to integrate over a sphere by doing upper hemi + lower hemi. Each of those is a singular square.

@TedShifrin Right. I was going to tell you my interpretation, but was wondering if it was total bahoolas.

it's because I'm bored

Yeah I was about to geuss that too.
guess

and I don't have anything else to do

solve a math puzzle then
lol

2:32 AM
sometimes I get tired of thinking in math
I need to take breaks

I usually dance.

I have two left feet

Well, dance to hiphop.

I don't like hiphop
I prefer pop

I do popping a type of dance from hiphop.

2:33 AM
like Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus for example

NO.
no

no what?

They do some weird dancing like twerking or something.

I love twerking
:$

It's just random, there isn't musicality in the way they dance. There is no expression.

2:35 AM
lol xD
you make me laugh xD

Um, how did I make you laugh?

Lady Gaga doesn't twerk
she lives for the applause

@KevinDriscoll What you posted is super confusing! No wonder why it took you so long!

@JohnWilson I havent actually posted yet
I dont think......

okay.
Well, make edits if you can because according to Mily Cyrus everybody makes mistakes.

2:37 AM
maybe I did accidentally

it's Miley

@Kevindriscoll Okay.

why do everybody here misspell Miley Cyrus' name? xD

@kevin Driscoll Never mind it was a post from Doug spoon wood
@KevinDriscoll At first I thought it was yours LOL.

Miley Cirus, Mily Cyrus

2:39 AM
Sorry.

xD
here comes the confused Ethan
maybe @TedShifrin can give him some advice
he's a professor

@Twink wana see somthing cool

I see, well mine is almost done

@Ethan do you like Miley Cyrus?

Define $\beta_s$:
$$\beta_s(x)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{n^{s}+x^s}$$

Then if $xy=1$,

$$\sum_{m=1}^\infty\frac{\beta_s(mx)}{m^s}+\sum_{m=1}^\infty \frac{\beta_s(my)}{m^s}=\zeta(s)^2$$
$\beta_2(x)=\frac{\pi}{x}\frac{1}{e^{2\pi x}-1}+\frac{\pi}{2x}-\frac{1}{2x^2}$
For all real $xy=1$,
$$\frac{\pi^3}{180}(x^2+y^2+5)-\frac{1}{2}\zeta(3)(x+y)=$$

$$\frac{1}{x}\sum_{m=1}^\infty\frac{1}{m^3(e^{2\pi mx}-1)}+\frac{1}{y}\sum_{m=1}^\infty\frac{1}{m^3(e^{2\pi my}-1)}$$
seting x=y=1, gives that $$\zeta(3)=\frac{7\pi^3}{180}-2\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{n^3(e^{2\pi n}-1)}$$

2:43 AM
@JohnWilson just posted it

@KevinDriscoll Your post looks less intimidating than the other.

@JohnWilson Holy shit yeah I have no idea how to read that other pose

@KevinDriscoll Thanks :)

post*
polish notation is weird
but it gets rid of all parenthesis

@JohnWilson can I see Kevin's post?
please?

thank you
it's [text](link)
not (text)[link] xD

Aight, I'll make sure next time.

you can edit it
click on the blue square
on the left of the comment

@JohnWilson Polish notation just means that instead of writing $$P \rightarrow Q$$ you write $$\rightarrow P Q$$

you can edit comments

2:47 AM
which gets rid of parenthesis

@KevinDriscoll Okay

@JohnWilson Have any questions I can answer?

@kevinDriscoll So conditional is put first in Polish Notation?

All connectives go first

It reminds me of assembly language somehow.
Where you have commands first and then something else second.

2:50 AM
so $\wedge P \vee Q R$ is the same as $P \wedge (Q\vee R)$

probably because assembly language is also in prefix notation :p

@KevinDriscoll Thanks for the examples. I'm trying to understand both your guys answer from my question. I'll look at your answer first though.

@JohnWilson I had to reverse engineer it, starting from the conclusion and working my way backward.
Otherwise what I did makes no obvious sense
I just figured out what I had to start with to get what I wanted

Yes, that does make sense.
It does make it easier to work with the conclusion first.

What did the engineer say to the reverse engineer?

2:55 AM
I dunno. What?

You always put the cart before the horse :-)

@JohnWilson As I said, the more straightforward way where you don't have to work backward involves a proof by contradiction
In Doug Spoonwood's answer he uses 2 methods called conditional proof and proof by contradiction
but I figured you werent familiar with those yet, so I just did it directly

@JohnWilson can you please do me a favor?

@KevinDriscoll How long could it take you to do it by proof by contradiction?
@KevinDriscoll I'm still looking at your post.

@JohnWilson ?

3:00 AM
Yes
Yes, what the favor?
@KevinDriscoll I was reading on simplification: so for example, it's raining and it's snowing. Therefore, it's raining.

@JohnWilson precisely

Same thing for, it's raining and it's snowing. Thus, it's snowing.

Indeed

@JohnWilson Could you please ask Kevin why is he ignoring me? Please?

@Twink hi pal :D

3:03 AM
@KevinDriscoll I haven't "done logic" in a long time - I don't quite understand how to parse this proof.

hiiii paaaaaaaaaaaaaaal :D

@Bitrex Mine, you mean?

finally someone who won't ignore me :D

Yah

@Twink :D

3:04 AM
which part is tripping you up?

pal do you like twerking?

yes

:D !!!
fiinally someone who understands me

@Bitrex

@KevinDriscoll I guess I usually expect to see something like, this $\implies$ this $\implies$ this etc
Oh.
Nevermind.

3:06 AM
pal can you ask Kevin why is he ignoring me? please

I see how it's formatted now, I'm dumb. :)

@KevinDriscoll What was the purpose of $ Q \lor \neg Q$ from line six?

is it beause of my flag?

@Twink does it matter?

To go with 4 and 5 so i could get $P \rightarrow R$

3:07 AM
yes please
ask him please pal

just be yourself pal

you may know that $P \rightarrow Q$ $Q \rightarrow R$ imples $P \rightarrow R$ directly

come on

but I wasnt sure so I did it the longer way

yes
@KevinDriscoll Yes.

3:09 AM
@Twink not everybody is going to accept who you are, right?

that rule, called hypothetical syllogism, is not taken to be primitive by some, where as constructive dilemma or disjunction elimination is

why not?

that's life

:-( not fair

people have preferences

3:10 AM
my diffie-hellman metaphor is becoming more and more realistic :/ sigh

@KevinDriscoll I'm reading on constructive dilemma
on wiki.

pal
for example @anon hates me too

yes pal

and I've never done anything to him

that is HIS choice,,,,right?

3:12 AM
:'(
but I'm a human being
I don't deserve to be hated for no reason

we all make choices in life

@anon I still think that analogy is classic. A true insight, imo.

@KevinDriscoll I think I can see the model of constructive dilemma.
How they arrive from the conclusion Q or S from the premises.

pal are you gonna ask Kevin ?

8 mins ago, by cyberskull
just be yourself pal

3:16 AM
@KevinDriscoll It's almost 11:30 Pm where I am at.
I'm going to go to sleep

Come on pal
do me that favor
I wanna know why he ignored me

@JohnWilson Its a bit tricky when you first see it. But basically its saying that at least 1 of 2 things will happen. Either P or R.

@KevinDriscoll Will you be on this chat tomorrow?

maybe it's not because of my flag
maybe it's for another reason

@JohnWilson since P implies something adn R implies something else. One of those 2 implications must also happen

3:17 AM
because we used to be friends

@JohnWilson Yes, I probably will

@KevinDriscoll Anyway if you aren't in chat tomorrow I can ask questiongs by commenting on your post
@KevinDriscoll Thanks for the Help :) . I'm going to go to sleep.

@JohnWilson No problem. Good luck.

see yeah everyone.

later

3:19 AM
pal?
come on pal
:(

@Twink it doesn't matter to you....don't let the CHOICES others intentionally make bring you down...

you didn't want to make me a favor
I just wanna know

why do you care?

because yes
are you gonna make me that favor or not?

he has given you a clear answer by NOT talking to you
understand?

3:22 AM
I'm in his ignore list

he made that choice

please ask him
that's why he forgot about me

then do the same pal

¬¬
so you're not making me the favor?

i don't want to see my pal hurt

3:24 AM
come on i'm not hurt
just ask him please

what if he doesn't answer me?

then it's not your fault
just do me the favor please

1 min ago, by cyberskull
i don't want to see my pal hurt

¬¬
so you won't do me the favor?

let it go
pal

3:26 AM
no?
just say no
why is it so difficult to say just NO
I don't want to do you that favor

1 min ago, by cyberskull
1 min ago, by cyberskull
i don't want to see my pal hurt

no
just say NO
it's two letters

:(
sorry pal

thank you
¬¬
"pal"

@KevinDriscoll why will you not talk to @Twink?

3:29 AM
that is not the question
the question is why is he ignoring me
i'm in his ignore list
he can't read me

same thing

ok
thanks pal :D

"pal"
>8(

PAL :D

I have no "pal"s

3:31 AM
me neither
I only have PALS :D

why did you call me that?

As a request, please finish your performance in a reasonable amount of time. There are others that may wish to use the chatroom at some point. Until then though you have full reign on stage.

because you didn't want to do me a favor
and pals do favors to their pals
LOL
sorry @anon I'm a good performer and I live for the applause-plause-plause
and I was born this way

@cyberskull I've been ignoring Twink because his conversations make me cringe. I just cant read it anymore

@KevinDriscoll Thank you for responding :-)

3:34 AM
:D
it was not because of my flag

anon's avatar looks sort of like your flag on its side

are you saying anon ................??

just an observation

do you think anon is like me?

dunno

3:37 AM
it's very possible

don't care

neither do I

@anon It is interesting what happens when one ignores both Twink and skull (No offense intended guys, but you're just filling this with spam and mumble.)

he says I'm a performer xD
:C
Pedro I thought we were friends

31 mins ago, by cyberskull
just be yourself pal

3:40 AM
yes pal :D you're right

20 mins ago, by cyberskull
why do you care?
what others think

@PedroTamaroff what are you working on tonight?

@KevinDriscoll I practiced for my singing lesson tomorrow =)

I don't but I when you think someone is your friend and he tells you something like that, it feels bad

Ah I see. Classical stuff? @PedroTamaroff

3:44 AM
@TedShifrin Le Ted is back.

Pour un moment @Pedro

@KevinDriscoll At the moment we're just polishing the basics, vocalization, pronunciation, breathing and all. The details are excruciating, the guy is very demanding, but he rules.

hi Ted
will you ignore me too?

And I really don't practice much =P
He's trying to sing a zamba with me, but his voice is too strong and I get lost and fail.

Singing is like anything. A strong foundation really sets you up for better stuff later.

3:46 AM
@twink, if you keep going off on uninteresting topics, maybe.

u.u

Well, math, tennis, voice ... @Pedro ... Now we just need to teach you to cook! :)

@TedShifrin I should learn how to brew good coffee first! =D

Good machines do that for you :D

you see? you talk about other things besides math
why do you get angry at me for doing that then?

3:50 AM
@TedShifrin I want to brew it!

Because you are relentless and repetitive, @Twink. I didn't say I was angry. i responded to your direct question.

I like the word nuisance.

Brew how?

:(
you love to make me feel bad, don't you? :(

@TedShifrin Dunno, I have to learn.
Jonas knows.

3:53 AM
@TedShifrin Have you ever worked with Robert Sorgenfrey? I read he was a great educator/researcher.

No, @cyber. Isn't he long gone?

@TedShifrin yes

He uses fancy machines, @Peter, no?

Ted what kind of music do you like?

Classical, particularly chamber music.
@cyber, Sorgenfrey retired the year I got my Ph.D.

3:57 AM
so, no Lady Gaga?

No, @Twink

u.u

Night, all. Late for me!

@TedShifrin Yeah, I guess so, but he also knows about moist, temp, and all that. =)
Bye byes.
I'm off too.

bye Pedrito
