Q: How do I start silverlight on netflix in full screen automatically?

KronoSI know that there this great big button that I can click for full screen on the bottom left of the screen. What I'm doing though is launching the direct movie/tv episode in chrome from XBMC. It's like pasting the video html address in the address bar and going directly to the video feed. Here'...

any ideas?

First time I saw this, I only saw people running. Well, or should I say moving?

That's so fake... well the guy falling that it

hmm
out of curiocity, anyone want to see pix of a old sun keyboard? i think it was part of a mini 5
er.. ultra 5

Wil
Yeah, looks fake!!! and... IT almost crashed my chrome :/ Went unresponsive, then when I did close, it just crashed the flash plugin
I found a new way to vent all my anger!!! My last two posts on blog.williamhilsum.com :) ... Two weeks to write still!

I thought it had gone official for a moment

@DMA57361 technically, there's no reason for them not to, since they even tied it to the blog link

After BloodPhilia asked you guys what the Super User blog should be focusing on, slhck pointed out that it would be nice if we could address recent changes to Super User and the Stack Exchange network. So here’s our first overview of recent changes.

From the start downvotes have “cost” rep: –2 from the post’s owner’s and –1 from yours. We all worked very hard for our rep and don’t want to lose any of it just to help moderate the site! The result? Users hardly ever downvote! Here’s a graph Jeff made with the upvotes vs. downvotes. …

hm
it needs to be tuesday sooner

@JourneymanGeek ?

lol
getting my x220i then ._.

ahhhh

12:42 PM
some of the spam.. is just bizarre

@Sathya almost worth the money as a short novel ;P

@IvoFlipse funnily it was titled as "Footprints Filmworks: Abdulla 'arrives,' in the United State"

its starting to become SELF AWARE
and what does it do? write slash

Why is the Indian accent sometimes completely incomprehensible? :\

12:47 PM
@IvoFlipse :P

lol
sometimes?

@JourneymanGeek I'm assuming @Sathya is fully comprehensible ;P

haha :D
we should have a SU mod podcast

oh dear god...

12:49 PM
and post to blog

i thought that accent died with the british empire ;p

then we'll know who's incomprehensible :P

@Sathya @ThomasMcDonald wants that as well

@Sathya I think my English is fine as long as we're talking about technology, as soon as we don't well then my vocabulary might fail on me at times

12:50 PM
I KNOW i am
i talk too fast ;p

@IvoFlipse let's test it then :P

@Sathya Actually the video is pretty interesting, but the guys accent is so annoying, because his intonation is off :(

that's incomprehensible? :\

the talk is about converting 2D pictures to 3D messes

12:51 PM
shalt not speak infront of @IvoFlipse

@Sathya thank you! :P

i know someone who might be interested in that...
if he turns up ;p

@JourneymanGeek who's that?

friend of mine from elsewhere

@Sathya that and not finishing words completely, sounds a bit slurry
@JourneymanGeek in the back of your head?

12:52 PM
works for a startup doing some crazyass glasses free 3d thing
lol

@JourneymanGeek :O now that is interesting

naw, the voices in my head totally deny they are nutty

@IvoFlipse yeah.

@JourneymanGeek I like 3d, but I already wear glasses, so another pair is... awkward

12:54 PM
lol
@IvoFlipse: i have clipons ;p
local cinema sells em for something like 3 dollars

@Wil That's some odd crash you got there... :S

btw do you guys have any suggestions for tests I should run with my brand new router?

Wil
@TomWijsman Chrome was unresponsive but then, when I clicked terminate, it was just the plugin that went, so it was alright... When I first saw the Asian characters, I thought possible hack attempt, but have no idea
@IvoFlipse can you connect to the internet? ... It's working :)

@Wil I meant for a review :P

Yeah, most of the times they are just because the title data is just invalid...
Get it to run a game server, @IvoFlipse... :P

Wil
12:59 PM
@IvoFlipse modern routers are so similar, especially if it is flashable, I would try to say things like interface speed (actual web interface), hardware (controller chip etc.), throughput (2 machines connected directly, test file copy speed).. and looks... in the age of Apple stuff, people care more about it than functionality!

Well, I had that idea once because it is an always on device. But calculating out the upload one would generate it didn't seem to fit the limits at that time. Still wondering how much the processor of the router could handle...

Wil
I'm going out... lets see if the supermarket has anything ready so I don't have to cook.... sooo tired :(

@Wil Well I was planning on trying to set up Calibre again @Wil and indeed test out its wifi strength/speed at different places

good afternoon, all!

hellow!

1:06 PM
Our router is hosting two networks, one 2.4 GHz 20 MHz mixed-NG (to support older devices) and one 5.0 GHz 40 MHz N-only to get up to 300 Mbps.
And when one fails or has interruptions it just switches to the other... :)

@TomWijsman this one is dual band and actually sends out both at the same time

@IvoFlipse: This one is too, but I set it to host two separate wireless connections.

obviously my previous router was just crap, but I used to sit right next to it, but my GF was having poor reception in the bedroom

Wil
@TomWijsman Nice... I run a cheap Netgear dg834pn and... that's it :( .... lol
It freezes about once every 2-3 weeks, so may need a new one soon...

1:08 PM
@TomWijsman oh right, forgot the part where it was one router hosting two networks :P

Wil
my "smart" infrastructure!

The networks are named "Draadloos" and "Draadloos N" xD

The network here is called Super User :P

Well, I forgot to disable interference checks between the antenna's when I first did it @Wil, it crashed twice a day because of that mistake...

Wil
@TomWijsman YAY! You aren't perfect! :P

1:09 PM
@IvoFlipse Nice blog post, thanks for the wrap up :)

And it was bogging the performance of both networks when we had simultaneous clients amongst both.
But now it's perfect, @Wil... xD

lol, we have two different ISPs here by accident

@slhck your welcome, should have posted it last week when I had actually written it, but luckily its not really out of date yet
@JourneymanGeek 'by accident'

one's part of our cable package, one we have free for a year with our wasname ... iptv package
by accident
THESE THINGS HAPPEN

:D

1:10 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol having free internet is always nice

lol
quite

Wil
... If I upgrade, going to get a TP-Link, I am so impressed by chinese cheap routers recently, been using them more and more... you can configure so much, like up to 10-20 SSIDs, and every aspect of the driver is a variable so you can control EVERYTHING from signal power down to SNR without having to hack/flash a thing
... and ultra reliable.
@JourneymanGeek ha! good accident!

@Wil Soooo you're saying I wasted 80 euro's on nothing?

lol
i <3 my wrt54gl

wrt610n here, i <3 it since we turned it into a DD-WRT :)

Wil
1:13 PM
@IvoFlipse not at all.... just a personal preference! most of the TP-Links I have seen are butt ugly, but they just work really well - sure you got a good one!

@TomWijsman WNDR3700v2

@TomWijsman I have exactly the same

its a router

greaaaat I forgot the password :\

stick it somewhere inconspicious ;p

1:14 PM
@TomWijsman haven't gotten around to that

routers should be like children... neither seen not heard

checked the site, turns out it might not like my WD MyBook :\

@TomWijsman But the reception is really sucky.. does DD-WRT help?

sometimes

@IvoFlipse: Seems about the same specifications as our router.

1:14 PM
you can use it to boost up the power

Wil
@JourneymanGeek And when they go wrong and you hit it, no one will complain :/ ... (sure there is a joke somewhere)

Wil
right, bye for 30mins or so!

@slhck What do you mean by sucky reception, I have no problems with that.
Be sure to set your wireless channel so that it doesn't interfere with your neighbors.

@TomWijsman I keep it in the living room and I couldn't even watch movies from the NAS when I was in the next room

1:16 PM
@TomWijsman Was planning on writing a post about installing DD-wrt, then HowToGeek came by :\

ahh there's that

@TomWijsman Might still write a rant about how hard it can be to pick routers :P

@IvoFlipse: From what I've read you have to be careful, but if you do it as described it should work. Be sure to keep copies of the recovery information or just connect with your old router in case your new starts failing...
@slhck:

tools.meraki.com/stumbler this is really nice for working out who's on what channel

ah thanks @JourneymanGeek

1:18 PM
Blue (Draadloos) are we, Red (Guy) is neighbor and Orange (bbox-...) is probably some other close neighbor.

Gotta find something for OS X though

that's platform independant
as long as you have java

> The Meraki WiFi Stumbler Java applet may be having trouble loading

And 5.0 Ghz
is

@TomWijsman Hehe :P

1:21 PM
Hmm, there was another song that would describe the "Alone" feeling better, but until I remember it "All By Myself" fits the purpose...

@TomWijsman You could have also used that: i.imgur.com/CUJBU.png

But well, @slhck: DD-WRT allowed me to set up two SSIDs instead of one, amongst tweaking some other settings.
And it now hosts a host file which blocks ads and spyware and all those nasty hosts from the whole network, unless someone manually configured his DNS...

@TomWijsman I'll look into it, didn't know DD-WRT was even available back when I bought it, so thanks for the pointer :)

Well, just read a lot of documentation on how to install it before doing so, because you can imagine a lot of things going wrong.
Hmm, left inSSIDer running, here you see the effect of interference:
The top blue line is the 2.4 GHz, really shaky. The top gray line is the 5.0 GHz, really stable.

Nice visualization
Wow, that's the software that'll help me write my next report

1:30 PM
Well, there is one more optimization I can think off and that is hanging the router on the wall near the ceiling; because it's now on a lot of cables, next to a monitor and behind a printer. But it's not worth it as it would look so weird... :P

@TomWijsman Nah, I have a very neat looking setup now and I wouldn't want to change that :P

@slhck: Well, it would be like "Can you hold the router up for me, I want to see if it improves the performance by 1% in different sections of the house..." :P
Really not worth the effort.
@slhck: Well, it's all cool. Until the moment I realized a lot of hot-keys don't function there...
Let's erase and type a new sentence... CTRL+A Bummer! Hmm, let's select the words then... CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT Bummer! Characters? SHIFT+LEFT Ah, that works... :D

@TomWijsman Yeah I noticed that :D
Nice concept though

1:35 PM
Hmm, @slhck: There is an extension for Google Chrome
but I'm using Firefox now... :(
Which should give more proper editing if you use it in Google Docs I think...
Anyhow, I'm going to play some Frozen Synapse.

@TomWijsman Yeah, haven't really used any of their stuff yet, I'm fine with a plain text editor :D

Wil
3:15 PM
@TomWijsman Looks good... but work time :(
Just back from the supermarket - I saw all the Ben and Jerrys and thought of the earlier chat!!!

;p
the ice cream one?

Wil
nah, the person! ...
yes! Is it as expensive world wide? I usually buy when on offer but, £4.50 a tub, it just seems too expensive for Ice Cream
mind you, Hagen Daaz isn't much better...

one of the proposals I started following recently on A51

Wil
@Sathya I don't know how anyone has the time for so many places to be! I love it here, but I can't keep up with SO/SU/SF, let alone more!

@Wil well I'm only on SU
SO is ~ 30minutes thats about it

Wil
3:24 PM
@Sathya Yeah, but you blog and do those other forums as well! your a busy bloke!

Can anyone cast an eye over this and see if a) it makes sense and b) is good value - lambda-tek.com/computing/…

@Wil hehe :D you're busy with your work! for me it's compilation time that I'm free, and make use of
(nice designer)

Wil
@ChrisF if you are on skype or something much quicker to talk to me... william.hilsum if not, il type... just fingers are killing!

@Wil OK

Wil
3:43 PM
Weird hearing someone's voice who you have seeing around the place!... makes the community feel real!

:)
I've heard @Wil's voice, but can't recall when/where.

Wil
Half Life? Swearing when you killed me? :/

ahaa yes :D

4:10 PM
Most useful conversation - thanks Wil.
Quick question - what search terms do I want to use to find box that takes a wireless signal as input and wired outputs. i.e. something I can plug a PC, XBox etc into that then wirelessly connects to my network

5
Q: What kind of device receives wireless signal and provides wired output?

Mark TMy wife uses an old computer which doesn't really like having an Internet connection via a USB wireless adapter. I've tried several, and none have been satisfactory. The connection gets dropped frequently, which is frustrating for her. A wireless card also had the same trouble. Repositioning the ...

does that.. look like what you wanted, @ChrisF

Looks promising
Can't see how many wired ports it has though :(

fwiw I queried for "wireless to wired output device" & the SU question was the first result.

@Sathya Result!

@ChrisF yep,

4:24 PM
Though I could get a small switch as well - which would push the cost up though

4:37 PM
Who said shopping was easy :(

Wil
@ChrisF huh? ... ehh... wireless bridge?

@Wil That's what I thought but when I used that term what came up didn't seem to fit the bill.
Should have looked harder ;)
This seems to be what I need. 4 Ethernet ports, good wireless connection.

5:05 PM
Good afternoon, everyone.

Wil
@ChrisF Sorry, had a telephone call... in all honesty, wireless bridges typically are just one port ethernet switches with wireless clients built in.... What I recommend you do is try to find any cheap wireless router and manually mod it to do that - all you really need to do is find one that supports "Wireless client" (instead of the usual wireless server/infrastructure), and then disable all the router bits such as DHCP, NAT etc... and it should work fine
That amazon link looks good, but I have certainly seen cheaper... I don't know if you can find it going up, but personally, I am a fan of TP Link and some other chinese cheap brands - so configurable and you can do pretty much anything on them (and very stable)... may be worth a look
@ChrisF also, to finish what I said in Skype, any new I3 2xxx series has the new Intel HD built in - It is an actual core, but you need to have a matched board to use it... I recommend h67 ones, they are good spec/price, (on par with what you already chose), you can also get away with h61 if you want to save a bit of money.

5:23 PM
Thanks - you've confirmed the m/b I'd found. Might end up upgrading this PC (new M/B, CPU & memory) and then hand this one down to the kids with an extra 2GB memory stick. Still need the case, PSU and hard drives though.
@Wil That's probably the right thing to search for. I'd like one with 4 wired ports so I don't have to buy a switch as well.

Wil
@ChrisF You may want to double check it supports wireless bridge or the techie term which eludes me at the moment, but I think even the cheap tp link £20 router does it (as i said, I am a bit fan of their stuff at the moment... don't let brand names fool you, they are AMAZING)

did ya'll record the conversation?

Wil
Didn't know you could :/

CallGraph can

Q: Skype: How to record a podcast?

AshwinI am doing a podcast with some friends. We are planning to do this by getting onto a Skype conference call and discussing our topic. Is there a way to record this Skype conference conversation into a MP3? (The OS is Windows XP.)

Wil
All I need, more stuff! I'll remember that for future, but, I doubt I do anything important enough worth recording!
... off topic... about a week ago, I replaced someones Iphone screen that they smashed, it is CRAZY how cheap replacement parts are - not the actual LCD panel but the glass/digitizer only cost about £5.... I wish I was better at electronics and I knew how to implement the digitizer in other things but it is silly how cheap something so amazing is

@Jez Which ones?

Jez
french, in particular

@Jez Well I know a little French... but I'm not particularly interested... why?

Jez
ah well i'm trying to get some kind people to follow & vote in my French area51 proposal...

@Jez Ah, je regrette... :(

Jez
6:46 PM
wouldnt take much commitment, it's not at the commit stage yet

@Jez Still, I see no added value in a French.SE... I don't like supporting it just for the sake of it having support :P Sorry...

Jez
no, not a french SE
a SE site on the french language
(and usage)

Yes I got what you meant :P Similar to English.SE

Jez
oh. you see no added value? meh
there are tons of such proposals, i think you're wrong

@Jez No, I'm sorry :(
Well, I don't see added value, PERSONALLY
And therefore, I won't support the proposal

Jez
6:51 PM
i'm reminded of the simpsons
What am I, the answer man? Just vote for me!
