All of these are in the Red Hat base repositories. You need to actually pay for Red Hat if you want to use it. Otherwise use CentOS. — Michael Hampton1 min ago
Why do I keep seeing this? Why do so many people in India try to use RHEL without paying for it, instead of just using CentOS?
@Undo Real Answer: Because Debian was the distro I got working after I left Slackware behind. I loved Slack [aside: a.o.l.slackware was brutal, when I hear people complain about "mean" users here I can only laugh] as it was the first Linux I ever got "everything" working on. But managing Slack on many machines is, well, it just sucks. So I've been using Debian because that's what I used after I used my first distro.
@jscott Back in 1995 or so, my Slackware box got hacked. Patrick Volkerding didn't seem to care. So I went to Red Hat since they seemed to be focusing more on security.
My money is actually on Ubuntu - solely because they are the only distro that has any chance, at all, of making it onto the desktops of the every day user
I'll share my experiences working as a technologist in a few different fields...
(Caution: this is a story about Red Hat... and how I grew up professionally with it)
I started working with Linux professionally in 2000-2002. This was during the wide adoption of Red Hat and the Red Hat Professio...
@MarkHenderson But people don't really WANT desktop Linux...
@ewwhite I'm actually not surprised by that. It does trail behind (for non-Ubunutu flavors) and the dev team makes some seriously boneheaded choices just to follow Debian "policy".
@Undo I work in education, US K-12 to be specific, lots of things are shifting and I suspect there will be a migration from in-house/VMware/Microsoft out to Cloud/SaaS/PaaS.. at least for all crappy stuff we have to keep running.
@Undo Can't help you there then. Sorry. I'm not a teacher but I do believe, strongly, that forced policy, restrictions, lock-down, don't help the educational process as much as they hinder it.
@MichaelHampton Well. they're still trying to educate where educate is a definition of student/teacher/school performance metrics from the state tied directly to budget finances.
I worked at freaking Home Depot until 2006ish... life-long computer geek, but it didn't matter until I graduated college. That stupid 4-year college degree, taught me very little but it was my admission ticket.
Although now that I find that I've rocketed into six figure salary within just a few years, I just spend a lot more. Mo money, mo problems, as they say.
@WesleyDavid GEEZUS I beat him in a running race yesterday. "Race you to the end of the cricket pitch Dad" he yelled. Im sick of letting him win so I destroyed him. He cried. "Daddy you were meant to let me win!!"
"Sorry son, you can't always win everything all the time" "But I always win at daycare!" "thats because you're as big as a 5 year old but you race against 3 year olds"
@WesleyDavid Sometimes he is. On the weekend during a shoulder ride I smashed his head into a low hanging lamp shade. Thing shattered all over the floor. He was more upset that the shoulder ride ended than he had cuts all over his cranium
@jscott I live in a fucking circus of a house lately and I can't seem to get regular sleeping hours and I can't make enough money to leave because apparently I'm about as skilled and in-demand as a stomped on box of ducklings.
@Mark @Michael You are SU moderators. I understand about normal users. But you are mods. Please act like it. I will contact the SE Comm. team if this continues. Goodbye, sirs.
@jscott Then they need to harden up. As hypocritical as it is, I'm a practicing Christian and I don't get offended by pretty much anything; including Tim Minchin and Richard Dawkins
And we're all human, our choice of religion doesn't affect our underlying biological desires - they just attempt to control them by giving a moral compass to make decisions by
@MarkHenderson Not sure where your "hypocritical" part is, I think you're spot on. btw Dawkins is just an asshole, and I'm not even close to religious.
You know I was always fascinated by poutine... I know what it is, and I think that it looks awful, but I am sure that it tastes amazing and I would eat it in a heartbeat.
Well, I don't know about white hot dogs, but I'm very in tune with my German heritage and I do know about weisswurst... let's see if they're the same thing or not...
@RyanRies From said article: "There is an unrelated white German sausage, traditional in Bavaria and popular in the mid-western United States, known as Weisswurst,"
