All of these are in the Red Hat base repositories. You need to actually pay for Red Hat if you want to use it. Otherwise use CentOS. — Michael Hampton 1 min ago
Why do I keep seeing this? Why do so many people in India try to use RHEL without paying for it, instead of just using CentOS?

@MichaelHampton Because they think it's still 1994?

Just wondering, but am I missing something obvious in my answer? serverfault.com/a/520982/63619

@MichaelHampton How else would you get your pseudo-RHEL cert without?

What's everyone's favorite Linux flavor?

@Undo <s>Windows 2012.</s> Debian. sigh

12:31 AM
@jscott That's not Linux, is it?

@Undo That was the sound of the joke flying over head. Did you hear it? :)

@jScott That's better. Why Debian?

@Undo Do you want the real answer? Or one that I fluff-up?

@jscott How about both?

@jscott You don't seem to be in a great mood today...

12:33 AM
@KevinSoviero Yep, either should work.
@jscott By taking a fake RHEL exam?

@MichaelHampton ghetto

@Undo Real Answer: Because Debian was the distro I got working after I left Slackware behind. I loved Slack [aside: a.o.l.slackware was brutal, when I hear people complain about "mean" users here I can only laugh] as it was the first Linux I ever got "everything" working on. But managing Slack on many machines is, well, it just sucks. So I've been using Debian because that's what I used after I used my first distro.

No RHEL?
Shame!
Although, times are changin'

@Undo Unreal Answer: Stability. Upgradabiliity Something about FSF/RMS/OSS/BBQWTF, etc.

@jscott Back in 1995 or so, my Slackware box got hacked. Patrick Volkerding didn't seem to care. So I went to Red Hat since they seemed to be focusing more on security.

12:37 AM
@jscott That's interesting. Have you tried any other distros?

All I say is that Red Hat pays people to do shit... there's accountability.

My money is actually on Ubuntu - solely because they are the only distro that has any chance, at all, of making it onto the desktops of the every day user

A: How should an IT department choose a Linux distribution: Technical reasons

ewwhiteI'll share my experiences working as a technologist in a few different fields... (Caution: this is a story about Red Hat... and how I grew up professionally with it) I started working with Linux professionally in 2000-2002. This was during the wide adoption of Red Hat and the Red Hat Professio...

@MarkHenderson But people don't really WANT desktop Linux...
Mac seems to serve that niche just fine.

@ewwhite No, they want a computer that just works and Ubuntu seems to be heading that way (not there yet though)

But Apple already does.
and Windows isn't bad either.

12:38 AM
@Undo Yes, in both personal/profession endeavors. I maintain, in addition to our Debian boxes, RHEL, CentOS [Vendor Requirements] at work.

I never see Debian in production...
I did install it for a financial firm that really wanted it...
but it just seems to be lacking on the vendor support front.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, there's The Pat Problem with Slack also. Remember when he got sick and everyone freaked?

@jscott Interesting. I'm using Amazon Linux on a couple of EC2 instances. It works... OK... I guess...

@ewwhite The introduction of Debian into a production environment suddenly makes it less than a production environment.
/trollface
Amazon Linux! When bizarre meets the bazaar.

@ewwhite I'm actually not surprised by that. It does trail behind (for non-Ubunutu flavors) and the dev team makes some seriously boneheaded choices just to follow Debian "policy".

12:41 AM
I know people who are using Debian and Ubuntu. They're all clueless developers.

@MichaelHampton Hey! I may resemble that comment! Clueless, sure; developer, no.

To be fair, I've deployed Debian and/or Ubuntu when circumstances dictated (i.e. Red Hat waiting too long to release the next version of EL).

@Undo I've not worked with any AWS, so I cannot comment there. I imagine soonish I'll be looking at something like Cloud or finding another job.

@MichaelHampton almost always.

@jscott It's fairly nice. Lots of documentation and lots of services that are cheaper when used with EC2.

12:45 AM
Oh, RHEL is on the Amazon free tier now.
@Undo I haven't been impressed with Amazon Linux. They seem to be lacking... QA.

@Undo I work in education, US K-12 to be specific, lots of things are shifting and I suspect there will be a migration from in-house/VMware/Microsoft out to Cloud/SaaS/PaaS.. at least for all crappy stuff we have to keep running.

@Michael True - I'm not using it for enterprise, just some personal/small business stuff. It runs PHP and MySQL, so it works for me :)

@MichaelHampton is it a rhel variant?

@ewwhite Apple is too expensive

@MarkHenderson Windows isn't, though, right?

12:47 AM
They're worse than Microsoft when it comes to price gouging

@MarkHenderson You did see that Mark S closed Bug #1?

@ewwhite They forked from EL6, but they keep upgrading stuff. So everytime you update, something is pretty much guaranteed to be broken.

@jscot Ahh. I'm 13, so I get the results of everything you do. Could you tell your cube mates to quit blocking iCloud and Google Docs?

@ewwhite They're both expensive, and thus Ubuntu desktop might be a viable alternative

@Undo LOL, we're a Google Apps domain. And iCloud is wide open. Where do you go to school? 2003?

12:48 AM
It's fairly annoying. Area51 is blocked too :)

@MichaelHampton Scientific Linux FTW!!

@jscott hah no hadnt seen that

@MarkHenderson Can beat, join 'em. Or at least close as WONTFIX

Got to go now. Be back soon.

@KevinSoviero yes-www.org (Oh, the irony, markdown)

12:50 AM
@Undo Can't help you there then. Sorry. I'm not a teacher but I do believe, strongly, that forced policy, restrictions, lock-down, don't help the educational process as much as they hinder it.

Education? Is there still a school left that's trying to do that?

@jscott unless the students were encouraged to bypass them ;p

@JourneymanGeek I just want simple management. I've only ten fingers to plug the holes in the dam.

@jscott: Well, I found the best way to keep kids from doing stuff they shouldn't is an open door ;p
worked for me

@MichaelHampton Well. they're still trying to educate where educate is a definition of student/teacher/school performance metrics from the state tied directly to budget finances.

12:55 AM
Oh yeah, NCLB and all that shit.

@MichaelHampton Yeah, and NY has additional state-level shit smeared upon it.

eheh
The school I went to was only partially government funded

@jscott Two words: NET SEND.

@Undo Let me know how that works in Windows 7.

@Undo Long gone

1:02 AM
@jscott There's not a 7 terminal in sight in Boise schools.
@Mark You know if it works in '98?

Do not do net send /domain:luther.edu.au HELP IM STUCK IN ROOM 113!

@Undo Well the support clock for XP is ticking loudly.

@Undo It most certainly does

Oh gosh, 98?!

@Mark I never got up the courage to try it :)
@jscott Either '98 or if you're lucky, XP with a '98 theme (?)

1:04 AM
@Undo Otherwise known as "classic" theme, it's built into xp

I refused to leave 98SE until like ... 2003 I finally decided to make a break for XP

@Mark Yes, I know. Any reason to use it instead of straight XP theme?

@RyanRies Not love for Window 2000?! Color me surprised.
@Undo Luna (XP theme) might be more taxing on a shitty RDP connection.

@jscott To be honest I really didn't get into professional IT until later!

@jscott Ah - that makes sense.

1:07 AM
@RyanRies Oh I get that, I worked at Computer City (defunct now) when Windows 98 was released.

@Undo Performance on shitty video cards. Familiarity. I quite liked the classic theme.

Do you happen to know whether it's common to block net send in school districts?

@jscott haha I had a friend who went to the Windows XP launch party in Australia. He said it one of the saddest things he'd ever seen :P
@Undo I should hope it is

@Mark I would too...

I worked at freaking Home Depot until 2006ish... life-long computer geek, but it didn't matter until I graduated college. That stupid 4-year college degree, taught me very little but it was my admission ticket.

1:10 AM
@RyanRies Common story

@Ryan Yes, I kind of understand that. I'm making iOS apps and bringing in $300-400 a month. No degree needed :)

I put in my years of helldesk, from 03-04 at Cisco and then 04-05 for education software
Never again shudder

Although now that I find that I've rocketed into six figure salary within just a few years, I just spend a lot more. Mo money, mo problems, as they say.

Geezus am I the only one here not earning 6 figures?

@Mark I'm not earning six figures, but I'm also 13 :)

1:12 AM
@MarkHenderson No.
HNNGGGGG I could stomp on a box of baby ducks right now.

@Undo haha

@Undo Geeze I bet you've never even taken it up the butt for a promotion

I'm not making six figures, but mainly that's because I'm lazy. I could if I felt like working myself to the bone like @ewwhite does.

@WesleyDavid You must leave the desert and migrate to the slightly less arid DFW, Texas.

@WesleyDavid Nooooooo you might hurt your foot chasing them around

1:14 AM
@RyanRies I need to do something - I'm in about as salty of a state of mind in the last week as I've been.
@MarkHenderson That's what the flamethrower is for.

@MichaelHampton I suspect I'm the same. Although even if I worked super hard I probably wouldn't hit 6 figured because SALARIES IN THIS COUNTRY SUCK

Yeah it's not all it's cracked up to be being on call 24/7.

@WesleyDavid Ohh crispy duck!

@MarkHenderson I'm not six, but six in education is only reserved for those with Dr. in front of their names.

Flamethrowers: For when you absolutely positively have to kill it with fire way over there.

1:14 AM
Also, Stack Exchange is amazing. I have real control over something. That's fun after being the controlled at a school for a year.

@Undo The illusion of community control at StackExchange will quickly wear off, don't worry.

From 21 onwards, expect to be controlled by either a serious realtionship or debt. Or both.

Who the actual hell flagged that?

THIS. IS. SERVER FAULT.

Frick we're turning into The Bridge.

1:16 AM
Or a woman.

It's only when you get a child of your own can you exert 100% control over another living being

Flag had to be a mistake

@MarkHenderson And if you do, you'll totally fuck the child up...

@MichaelHampton Exactly
@WesleyDavid Dunno it went away too quick for me to check
I dont know if you can decline flags against your own content

I don't know, I think most kids will turn out alright in spite of how much the parents tried.

1:17 AM
@MarkHenderson net send /domain:mark.henderson.local.yolo I WILL UNDRESS YOUR UNCONSCIOUS BODY WITH MY TEETH.

@Michael I flagged that. I expect to see more maturity in a moderator. Please act like a mature human.

@MarkHenderson Like whooping his ass at soccer? =)

@Undo You... must be new to the internet

@Undo Sorry mate, you're in the wrong room for maturity.

@Undo Yeahhhh... you won't fit in here.

1:18 AM
I just clicked "not sure" because I figured it was probably a mistake

@WesleyDavid GEEZUS I beat him in a running race yesterday. "Race you to the end of the cricket pitch Dad" he yelled. Im sick of letting him win so I destroyed him. He cried. "Daddy you were meant to let me win!!"

@RyanRies I click "invalid" 101% of the time.
@MarkHenderson Your son is a wuss. =P
Man him up.

heheh

Isn't he supposed to be like, 7'1 when he's full grown?

"Sorry son, you can't always win everything all the time"
"But I always win at daycare!"
"thats because you're as big as a 5 year old but you race against 3 year olds"

1:19 AM
I didn't clear the flag, either. Dunno who did.

Ergh, I took too many caffeine pills today - I'm getting the come-down jitters.
I am such an addict.

@WesleyDavid Sometimes he is. On the weekend during a shoulder ride I smashed his head into a low hanging lamp shade. Thing shattered all over the floor. He was more upset that the shoulder ride ended than he had cuts all over his cranium

@WesleyDavid Caffeine pills?!!?? Are you 13?

@MarkHenderson Okay, there's some potential.
@jscott I'm an addict. Don't judge me!

@WesleyDavid Physical pain he's a trooper. Blood? Whatever. But he's a bit emotional

1:21 AM
@jscott I'm running on 5 hours sleep a night and don't want to yellow my teeth by drinking two pots of coffee a day.

@WesleyDavid Oh gosh, you're not doing that caffeine ephedrine aspirin stack shit are you

@jscott ....no, but tell me more!
@jscott I want to get aero shots

@WesleyDavid No. Get some sleep.

@WesleyDavid 5 consecutive hours? You're doing better than anyone with a new born

@MarkHenderson This man speaks truth.

1:23 AM
@jscott I live in a fucking circus of a house lately and I can't seem to get regular sleeping hours and I can't make enough money to leave because apparently I'm about as skilled and in-demand as a stomped on box of ducklings.
@MarkHenderson Ether.

@WesleyDavid You could sell the ducklings to a chinese restaurant so they actually have some intrinsic value

@WesleyDavid Apply to both child and mother you mean surely.

So I warn everyone, I am self centered and as irritable as sand in a pair of corduroy pants.

@Mark @Michael You are SU moderators. I understand about normal users. But you are mods. Please act like it. I will contact the SE Comm. team if this continues. Goodbye, sirs.
2

In fact, I'm going to go eat something.

1:24 AM
@Undo We're not SU moderators, so good luck with that

snerk

@WesleyDavid No, I'm not a dick. I've never banned anyone except for trolls

@MarkHenderson ...so that means you'll ban him? =P
okay, gone for reals. noms.

@WesleyDavid Bye snuggums

Ah I see now, they publish a Bible Conditionals app, it is entirely possible they are offended easily.

1:29 AM
@jscott Then they need to harden up. As hypocritical as it is, I'm a practicing Christian and I don't get offended by pretty much anything; including Tim Minchin and Richard Dawkins
And we're all human, our choice of religion doesn't affect our underlying biological desires - they just attempt to control them by giving a moral compass to make decisions by

I still don't understand why I keep getting pinged about this.

@MichaelHampton Because I don't want to decline a flag against my own content probably

@MarkHenderson Not sure where your "hypocritical" part is, I think you're spot on. btw Dawkins is just an asshole, and I'm not even close to religious.

@jscott I say and do a lot of things that aren't what a lot of people would consider to be christian

@MarkHenderson ps. I won't hold either of those things against you. :)

1:36 AM
@jscott Uhh, thanks? I guess :p
And if nobody else is going to decline the flag, I guess I finally will

@MarkHenderson I wasn't about to touch that.

Goddamnit someone else got to it and deleted it

So how is it, do you think, that young master Undo wander into SF chat?

@jscott I have no idea. He seemed to think we were superuser mods

I looked at his profile, his answers seem not bad actually... he's just strident ... as 13 year old boys are.

1:40 AM
@RyanRies If he really is 13 and producing money-making apps he's doing better than I was at 13

Absolutely
I couldn't produce anything better than semen at 13
5
... TMI?

ZING

@RyanRies Haha but one day the sperm that lives in that semen will produce something amazing

@jscott Now that is offensive.

1:43 AM
Is that real?

@jscott Is that what a big mac looks like in the US?

Canada has a double Big Mac

@jscott Nowai

I...

Wow. The world needed that.

1:43 AM
Australia has the healthiest big macs in the world apparently. Probably because they're tiny.
@RyanRies I would totally buy that
Fuck now I want a big mac for lunch
Screw you

(Me too )

I knew about poutine, but freaking double big macs?!

You know I was always fascinated by poutine... I know what it is, and I think that it looks awful, but I am sure that it tastes amazing and I would eat it in a heartbeat.

@RyanRies Ah, Texas, so then I assume you've had neither poutine nor White Hot Dogs

Weissworst!

1:49 AM

Well, I don't know about white hot dogs, but I'm very in tune with my German heritage and I do know about weisswurst... let's see if they're the same thing or not...

They're not at all..

But they are... just read that Wiki article you posted. "The white hot originated in the 1920s in Rochester's German community..." :D

@RyanRies From said article: "There is an unrelated white German sausage, traditional in Bavaria and popular in the mid-western United States, known as Weisswurst,"

doh
You win
Either way, I'd eat the shit out of both
3

1:52 AM
Oh yeah

@RyanRies Please be talking about whores, please be talking about whores
scrolls up damnit, sausages

@MarkHenderson So close
My great-grandfather was from Nuremberg, and I will eat sauerkraut straight from the jar, therefore I feel a strong identity with my heritage ;)

@RyanRies Have you made sauerkraut?

@freiheit No... but I would love to.
