I think this fits under this wweeks topic: can people cast an eye over my logic and pick hols in it please!
In 1862 Thomas Jones a Coal Miner (resident in Cwmbargoed nr Merthyr Tydfil, aged 21, father John Jones a Coal Miner) marries Elizabeth Hughes (also resident Cmwbargoed). I have no reason to disbelieve any of the data about Thomas.
In 1870 Thomas dies in an explosion in a pit; he is 30 years old and working as an ostler (pony handler).
As I have no proven census entry for him, I don't have a putative place of birth.
However, as he married just over a year after the 1861 census, I'd expect:
- that his occupation would be mining related (and possibly related to pit ponies -- which were not usually ponies but horses, but that's irrelevant to theargument).
- that (since his father was alive at his marriage) and also a miner, that the son would be living with the father in the area of Merthyr Tydfil.
There are four census entries in 1861 for a Thomas Jones living with his father John Jones in Merthyr Tydfil, born between 1838 and 1842.
- One is for Thomas Jones born abt 1840 in Carmarthenshire; his father is a mason which is not a good fit. He is a coal miner.
- One is for Thomas Jones born abt 1841 in Merthyr. His father is a blocklayer, and he is a miner. A Thomas Jones miner born abt 1841 with father John Jones blocklayer married Mary Ainsworth in June 1864, so I believe I can eliminate this possibility.
- One is for Thomas Jones born abt 1839 in Breconshire; he is a Stone miner; his father is a miner. It looks as if this candidate was in Pennsylvania by 1870, so I can eliminate this possibility.
- One is for Thomas Jones born abt 1839 in Llangyndir Breconshire. Both he and his father John are Hauliers -- which means men who work with pit poines transporting coal away form the face.
Looking at the residences in 1861, the 4th candidate 9the haulier) is the closest (in Dowlais) to Cwmbargoed where known Thomas married.
I'm therefore concluding that -- if Thomas was living with his father in 1861, candidate 4 is th emost likely.
I still have to explore the options for Thomas Jones not living withhis father in 1861.

Looking at Thomas Jones resident are Mderthyr born 1838-1841, I've eliminated everyone who is: married; not a coal miner/collier/haulier); not living with a widowed mother (as John Jones is not recorded as dead in 1862).
This gives me an additional 4 candidates to explore.
