@PolyGeo that sounds like an interesting little project for when you have the time. I had a quick look at the 1838 tithe records on TheGenealogist and "Thomas Hitchcox Junior" owned over 50 acres split across more than a dozen plots at the time, which looks like a fair match to your Thomas. The record includes plot names, and they can be shown on the tithe map, which might be helpful. Ping me if you want more info.

Thanks @AndyW - I do plan to take out a subscription for The Genealogist at some point to get at records for Thomas Hitchcox Jnr (as he was also known in Whites History Gazetteer Directory Staffordshire 1834) and a few other ancestors but I'm always keen to get advanced info.
