Anyone chatting today?

11:34 AM
@ColeValleyGirl intermittently

Yes, I'm going to be more absent than present. Did we agree a topic?

@ColeValleyGirl wasn't it "canonical posts" or "where are you stuck?" so something like that?
Hey, it's just us, so we can decide.

Very true. I haven't put enough thought into canonical posts yet, I'm afraid...
'Where are you stuck' could be a good topic.

Hello

@AmericanLuke Hello back. Did you have a topic decided?
If you haven't, ar eyou happy with 'where are you stuck?'

Fine by me

And if not many people turn up, we could reuse it next week. maybe vary the time.

So, will we be discussing the canonical post or the topic itself?

So, where are other people stuck? I've got a list...

12:12 PM
I'm mostly stuck with early 18th century parish records
I think I've found a possibility two generations further back, but I can't make the link

UK parishes?

Germany

Ouch. So not much online...

Russia is worse :P

I don't personally think it's a good idea to try to bridge a gap because it looks like a possibility. Slogging back the hard way is rougher but less prone to error.

12:14 PM
And I've got Russian ancestors too

I've got a Thomas Jones in Glamorgan in the mid-nineteenth century. (Who had a son Thomas Jones who had a son Thomas Jones). I've got him named as the father on a birth certificate but he seems to have died between censuses and identifying his widow and son is hard... lots of Thomas Jones, and Elizabeth Jones.
You don't have it easy, do you.
Where do you start looking, in Russia. Familysearch I guess but where else.

@ColeValleyGirl Where I'm stuck, I've got four Johann Ludwig Walckers in a row (with one Samuel Walcker in the middle)

Reeated names are wonderful.... but only if they're unusual names. Otherwise they're a pita. I've got German as a forename in one of my lines in Nottinghamshire -- helps enormously.

@ColeValleyGirl I've a g aunt who's done a lot of genealogy research, so I sometimes look at her sources to get ideas where else I can look when I'm stuck
@Verbeia Any particular place you're stuck?

I look back at sources I've used before to get ideas where to look next.
Gotta go -- sorry.

12:21 PM
My ancestors moved quite a few times (to different countries), which makes it difficult to get a source that is useful for more than a couple generatios
@ColeValleyGirl See you

This marks the end of the chat. We'll see everyone next time.
Note, the time may be changed to make it easier for the Aussies and Americans.
