One metric hoard of flags.
not too bad
00:46
Dealing with comment flags is the biggest pain of being a moderator, at least for me...
01:10
@PearsonArtPhoto you have to handle many flags on SciFi?
A fair bit, but not too bad.
It's probably 2-3 times the flag load here.
Well it's not too bad here, but we also don't get much of noise, most flags are helpful. So far... but we better keep an eye on @Undo :))
I'm thinking of some question ... hitching a ride on a comet, Jules Verne style (what he wrote in his Off on a Comet). If there would be any point in trying that. Most comets I looked that have huge orbital eccentricity, i.e. go far enough, also have orbital period of thousands of years or more. And I didn't find a single record of a know extrasolar comet that might be more interesting for such feats.
still fishing tho ... need to reel a good candidate comet in for interrogation :)
what kind of science can we install in planetary penetrators, or what else could survive a large velocity collision?

We have 2^10 registered users :)

Q: Out of the Harry Potter "Dream Team" who is the strongest?

Coby ParrishWhen I say dream team I am referring to Ron, Hermione, and Harry. By "stronger" I mean through skill, intelligence, talent, and actual magic power.

seriously ...

wow
I knew you'd say that haha
just saw a big Z flying on the screen
@TildalWave Think I'm going to start casting invalid flags? Hmm... ideas....
Reminds me of that monolith landing scene from Odyssey 2010
@Undo Hey, no ideas! You should save those for questions!
03:01
@TildalWave Looks like it's from Halo: Combat Evolved...
lol!
bay doors :D
Those look like poorly done textures at a low resolution, combined with a low polygon count model of the bay doors.
The lighting also looks weird, but as the MythBusters have proven, space does weird things with light. Not to mention it's a long exposure

@Undo the API from api.SE or the normal API that gets used?
If the normal API, I am disappoint, you should know all the endpoints by know :P
Kidding, even I don't know, though I can figure it out in secconds

@TildalWave I have accepted verdantchandra's answer to the Mars supervolcano question- I needed time to read the links and such, also consider that I am getting slammed in real life, so time is at a premium. In future, I will just silently read the answers (not commenting), but only when I get the time.
Do not want to cause tht fuss again

I'm tempted to drop a comment and ask the OP to provide context for his/her question. It's quite possible it may be a language/communication issue keeping him/her from following the recommendations on 'How to ask questions'. OTOH, the OP may simply be lackadaisical - in which case downvotes are in order.

@Everyone Hey :D

@Everyone Lecture? I won't call that lecture...
It's just merciless spewing :P

Of course. Madras, right?

@CrazyBuddy There're these aircraft commissioned to simulate a low-gee environment for research, and stuff - I forget
12:59
How large an arc do they describe for any reasonable duration of reduced gravity?
@Everyone Oh that... I saw Stephen Hawking riding in that once :P
A reduced gravity aircraft is a type of fixed-wing aircraft that provides brief near-weightless environments for training astronauts, conducting research and making gravity-free movie shots. Versions of such airplanes, officially nicknamed Weightless Wonders, have been operated by the NASA Reduced Gravity Research Program. The unofficial nickname "vomit comet" became popular among those who experienced their operation. Operating principles The aircraft gives its occupants the sensation of weightlessness by following an (approximately parabolic) elliptic flight path relative to th...

@Manish The normal one that takes an fkey.
The worst part is trying to figure out how it works - I think I might have flagged a few things accidently :P

Supernovae are intensely bright objects. They are formed when a star reaches the end of its life with a dramatic explosion, expelling most of its material out into space. The subject of this new Hubble image, spiral galaxy NGC 6984, played host to one of these explosions back in 2012, known as SN 2012im. Now, another star has exploded, forming supernova SN 2013ek — visible in this image as the

@Undo Unplug LAN cord (or disconnect from wifi, or whatever), Ctrl-Shift-J (Chrome), open Network tab, flag, see the form data in Network tab, refresh page to cancel request, plug in cord.
Well, as a mod I can test things on meta and clear up tracks so I don't have to do that :P
16:04
> It is so close to where SN 2012im was spotted that the two events are thought to be linked
if one occurs in the same place next year we should start worrying!
16:42
@ManishEarth I was mostly experimenting; the form is site/flags/comments/#/add/#
Where the first # is the comment ID, and the second # is the type of flag.
@ManishEarth Know of any good way to get the fkey? I have a script that shows it to me on the side of the page, but then I have to visit the site and manually copy/paste it. It's stored in local storage - is there another way to fetch it?
@Undo StackExchange.options.user.fkey or something
It's not localstorage
@ManishEarth It actually is in local storage, as se:fkey.
For chat it's fkey().fkey
@Undo OK, but it isn't obtained from localstorage
@Undo download the SO-Chat-Bot that Manish was using, all of that is documented in there
Ok.
16:47
in ./source/adapter.js
@ManishEarth Ah, ok. Is there any way to get it through the filesystem (because it does end up in local storage) for use in another app?
Because I want to make a comment flagger app, that I could queue up comments to flag and it would automatically put 5 seconds in between them.
#firstworldproblem
@Undo It's a CSRF token, it's fed to the page via JavaScript. When you ask for an SE page with your session cookies (yum!), you get a page that has the fkey embedded in it somewhere.
@Undo git clone git://github.com/Zirak/SO-ChatBot.git
In the case of SE, they feed it to the client side by embedding it in the StackExchange.init() function that gets called by one of the inline <script>s
Yes... I already know how to get it from a script:
16:49
@Undo So, if you fetch a page with the cookie and grep out the init line or the fkey line, you'll have the fkey.
Ohh! Good idea!
@Undo Yes, but it's fed to the javascript via an inline script.
Yes. Ok, let me try a few things.
It's a CSRF token. No point storing it client side
@Undo Which language are you writing your app in?
Obj-C
16:51
Grr
lol
Care to use Python? Or something else that works on both Mac and Linux
Umm... I don't know Python...
Do you want the app too?
Good time to learn!
Yes. Maybe not as a flagger, but at least the bit that identifies the stuff.
You already sent me the code of the old app, but Obj C :(
Lol. Ok, let me learn Python.
I think this pretty well sums up my success so far:
@Manish If I wrote it in Python, would it need to be command-line?
16:55
@Undo Not necessarily, but it could be, yes.
Or you can use PyQt.
Which is easier? :P
command line
Ok.
@Undo To be fair, command line is easier to extend, too
Command line is cooler-looking too.
16:56
yep
especially with colors
:D
Ack, this idea of not using semicolons is driving me crazy.
You could use java :p
My pinky finger won't stop putting semicolons after every line;

18:03
wow you guys talk too much
@RealzSlaw This is a slow day :P
@Undo all the moreso then :P
Yup :D
@Undo hehe I'm about the same
Hmm... I'm stuck on the regex. @ManishEarth, I need regex to extract the <key> from "fkey":"<key>"
18:12
@Undo wget -O - http://stackoverflow.com|grep fkey| sed s/.*\"fkey\"\:\"//|sed s/\".*// works for me
@Undo If you want a direct regex match for that, you need lookbehinds.
Instead, use replace()
18:30
Testing.
@Donald.McLean !gnitseT
19:05
@Undo I was having some trouble with chat.
Oh, like what?
Somehow I had gotten logged out and I couldn't get logged back in. It was very weird and annoying.
Manish was probably messing with you.
@Undo nope, not me
chat seems to like losing its cookies
I don't want it's cookies. I have my own (Oreos and Girl Scout).
19:09
I really have no idea how to extract that fkey.
@Undo Which language? Python?
Yup. I could do it in Obj-C
One sec
Gimme the code you use to fetch a page
without the cookies
import urllib2

response = urllib2.urlopen("http://space.stackexchange.com")
page_source = response.read()

line = page_source
Where line becomes the source for the site.
19:12
Would it be too much to call the theory for existence of the Oort cloud stupid and shortsighted?
@TildalWave No comment :P
@TildalWave Where is this coming from?
@TildalWave I would like to have that new Oort Cloud question on Space over at Astronomy by the way
If you don't mind migrating it
I support the migration.
It seems more like the flavor we have at Astro
And Astro needs more questions
More importantly, it's not about space exploration.
19:15
right
We really need a (lowly non-mod) migration path to Astro.
it doesn't mention any sort of explorative research that resulted in the question
Then I could feel like I'm doing something.
it's mostly theory based on existing data
19:17
Hey! We have a real flag in the Space 10k tools!
@called2voyage I thought to, yes ...
VLQ here. Opinions?
0
A: What technological barriers, if any, prevent a manned mission to Mars at this time?

EmmaSpace radiation damages eggs in the female body and mars is very high in radiation. The length of time it takes to get there and long periods of time in space are dangerous to your health.

I think someone should suggest to Emma that she add more detail.
Other than that I don't think there is much else that can be done.
@Undo you get your 1 rep back ;) I've converted it to a comment ... and you can eventually flag it as too chatty too LOL
@Undo re.search("\"fkey\"\:\"([a-z0-9]{32})\"",line).group(1)
After an import re, of course
19:20
@TildalWave I was looking forward to using that one button!:
@called2voyage I don't think there's much chance for that from an unregistered user
@TildalWave Robert Cartaino has advised me against converting that sort of answer into a comment.
He said it is better to let it get downvoted
c2v is right, only convert useful "comments" to comments
@called2voyage Oh I know, but I'd personally prefer it be there as a comment for a while... downvotes on answers come with rep los for those that are just fair to its quality really
19:22
@Undo Once you get how to use grouping in regexes, things become easier. While a direct regex for the fkey will require lookaheads and lookbehinds, grouping doesn't
@TildalWave Not disagreeing with your personal assessment, just pointing out that it has been fairly strictly advised not to do this before.
I think this instance is kind of on the fence, personally.
@called2voyage that's because Robert has an aversion to comments in general ... don't get me wrong, he's absolutely right, but I did what I believe a mod should do when an answer is gathering LQ flags, downvotes, yet is still somewhat relevant to a thread it was posted in. Arguably, it doesn't add anything to the thread, but that's not for me to decide.
I have an aversion to comments.
No comment
19:27
lol
Since when does Chrome use that tray icon for notifications in Windozes?
I just noticed it
I don't know. I don't see it on mine.
I'm on OS X :D
I'll have to check at home though because I'm using Portable Chrome now.
@TildalWave two months
19:28
it has some options ... "do not disturb for xxx days" e.t.c.
@ManishEarth hehe it's been long then since I've been on Win
any way to turn it off? It's kinda annoying
If I click on it it tells me "nothing to see here, move along" bloody pesky arrogant ***
you could always write a batch file to close the process when you start up your computer
@called2voyage well I don't see it as a separate process here
@TildalWave click on the bell icon in your tray and then use the "mute" option
Not sure if you can go back to the old notifications
@ManishEarth OK the icon is still there, just muted ... now what? Can someone ping me, please?
@TildalWave Does this work?
19:33
'O @TildalWave
well I didn't get the popup box now... so I guess it works, but not in the way I'd like it to
I still want popup boxes, just not the bloody tray icon that is completely useless
@TildalWave ping
Arg I think my fever and headache are coming back
OK that Oort cloud comet exchange question migrated to Astro.SE
Now what do we get to demand from Astro?
You is collaborator.
19:37
@Undo All of Astro mods in SEx.SE chat? :))
@RhysW you around?
@TildalWave Superping him. Rhys says that if you're out mowing the lawn or something, the superping will jerk you right through your door and set you down in front of your computer.
@TildalWave Thanks
@called2voyage I forgot to clear the comments again ... flagged it for you on Astro
19:40
@TildalWave No prob, I was already looking for that.
@Undo how does superping work? @@?
@TildalWave @@chatuserid
@ManishEarth beat me to it
OK so now I need to find his chat user ID

@rhysw Earth to Rhys, come in Rhys!
@called2voyage I have answered thy call. Why dost thou summon me?
@ManishEarth You know, I might be a geek but I still don't recognize which ID belongs to which user :P
@Donald.McLean thou hast summoneth thee for teh kicks
19:50
@TildalWave Something not right there with the pronouns. You're saying that I summoned myself.
@Donald.McLean Just reminding Tildal how to (ab)use the superping
@Donald.McLean hehe sorry I just realizeth :))
@called2voyage Yes, yes i did.
@DavidFreitag How long has it been since you last changed it?
@called2voyage almost two weeks now i think
19:55
No I mean the prior picture.
What do you mean?
how long did you have your last pic before changing it to this one?
I went from regular gravatar to the "I don't want to live on this earth anymore" and stayed that way for probably about two months or so i think
two months sounds about right
Some cool apps from NASA: jpl.nasa.gov/apps
20:07
@called2voyage Well, actually. I started using SE chat on July 31st, i changed my avatar i think two or three days later? So it's been just over three months.
Fully explorable Mars data is now available in NASA Eyes too: eyes.nasa.gov
20:29
You have awoken me from my slumber
@TildalWave whats up
Hehe hey @RhysW! Oh nothing much, we just all wondered where you were?
Very busy lately im afraid, new job, moved house, not a lot of free time at the moment, ect :(
oh you're excused then :P
@RhysW It seems like a lot of people have been moving lately.
All moving further from Tildal
20:34
and/or switching jobs as well.
@RhysW That sounds swell to me :)
I moved in with c2v, but don't tell him, he hasn't come home and noticed yet
I can think of at four people from Sec.SE that have moved recently.
well he's been called to voyage so he might not be back in a while :)

that was bad
please leave

@TildalWave ha
@RhysW Are you the one who keeps throwing wasps in my pantry?
21:23
@Undo btw, your library will get a logged-out fkey, you have to make it log in for it to work. I may write a Python Mechanize code for that
ah, just saw the issue
@Undo Reminds me, I want to one day write a full StackExchange Python API. In fact, I'll create a repo for it right now so I won't forget (not that that'll help)
One that incorporates login
21:45
wasps in the pantry?
@UV-D I don't know where they're coming from.
dang,definitely get that checked out... could be a nest (or @RhysW)
Exterminator came--couldn't find the source of the wasps.
I suspect they're getting in there from outside, somehow.
Perhaps through the exhaust port for the dryer.
hmmmm perhaps check the ventilation
@UV-D Do you know anything about this?

Q: Might Oort cloud comets be exchanged between solar systems?

dotancohenConsidering their distance from their parent stars, might Oort cloud object such as comets be exchanged between passing stars (assuming that other stars have similar Oort clouds)?

21:53
was just looking at it...
I know it's not in your usual topic area (planetary science).
I am thinking that it should be possible to have long, really long orbited comets
exocomet
I am seeing a few artices that suggest that also
I may answer it later (or if someone could answer it, that would be good too)

1 hour later…
23:22
@ManishEarth With Mechanize, how would one log in to the system?
