A: What non-plant, non-bacteria organisms have been studied for their use in colonization?

UV-DA chapter from the reference 'Colonies in Space' (Heppenheimer, 1977, 2007): Up on the Farm discusses as the chapter title suggests - farming the food needs of any colony. Specifically, they discuss which type of livestock is the most viable given constraints of space and feed, specifically for ...

Q: How could us moderators improve?

TildalWaveI'm a freshman in all this moderation business. If you look at the date when us pro tempore moderators were selected by the community managers, it has been only 48 days at the time of me writing this since appointment. That's the whole duration of my own experience in moderating any Stack Exchang...

@UV-D No 'shrooms? :(
it is mentioned... read down
oh... just as I was reading down, there it is :)
02:18
lol - I added a little bit to it
I think you guys are doing a good job modrating
yes... we could eat them too, I just had some today :P
so did I, as part of my breakfat
breakfast
lol
replied to your meta post
@UV-D I would like to think that too, yes. It really goes a lot of effort into it, that's no joke. But there were some unfortunate remarks, events, and considering how long we're here and how well we're doing, it's rather shocking to me. I have a working theory why that might be, but I'm not too comfortable talking of it here. Not because I'm a mod BTW
that is understandable
or because others are too... just "socionics"
sorry ... autocorrection kicked in, it's off now I killed the bugger LOL
02:26
and it is always best not to air dirty laundry
@UV-D Oh it's not that at all, it's not dirty laundry. It's just that I'm growing more cautious of what is discussed here... which is a shame on its own, but I can't account at all times who's gonna be offended by what, and for what reason, even if not intended.
well, you can't please everyone
and we're human first, and as such we make mistakes
dirty laundry should be discussed in meta, but I guess it could be thought over here first too
I honestly think you guys are doing well, especially compared with othr sites I belong to
@UV-D If it even was mistakes, I'd be glad to correct some, if I caused them. But that's just it, I don't think anything is nearly as bad as some had no problem implying at all. Modding business wise, I mean.
02:32
hmmmmm
some people have bad days and lash out
And I don't know why but I've got this feeling that a lot of members think us mods are some cohorting bunch that discusses things behind anyone's back or anything like that. We actually don't, our mod room is nearly empty of posts, if I didn't flood it with feeds... too much so and Pearson changed that a bit so our posts are not lost in the flood of feeds from main site and meta each time a new question is posted
for a while tho, I've made it like xmas :D
@UV-D well they can lash out all they want as long as it's not disruptive to the community here... then it's not just lashing out, it's plain arrogant
true
I think you guys have nothing to worry about
The site that I am deleting from (cogsci), the mods as nice as they are, are not always around, and three times their absence has caused hassle for me.. if I am not comfortable in a site, I leave. I plan to hang around here like a swet-sock-bad-smell
I hope so, because doing the usual business of asking questions, providing answers and promoting the site is hard enough job on its own. I also didn't sign up to run a kindergarten, so I'll keep my hopes up it won't turn up to be exactly that, too often at least
you guys role model a comfortable, effective and learning environment
as well as a fun environment here in chat
@UV-D It's meant to be a cosy place, a lot unlike space actually. But this should go the same for all of us, not just mods trying their best for others to enjoy it. Modding is a lot of altruism, but if it isn't rewarded in any way, good mods will leave and badass mods will come to tie a rope around your necks and ride you like ... no, no... totally joking!! :P
02:44
LOL I know a few sites where that seems to happen too
just wanted to stop being too serious ;) there's no need for that, plus I might sound like I'm really old or something
nah, you don't sound a day over 80
@UV-D didn't know there's SM.SE?

Sadomasochism is the giving and/or receiving of pleasure—often sexual—from acts involving the infliction or reception of pain or humiliation. A subset of BDSM, practitioners of sadomasochism usually seek out sexual gratification from these acts, but often seek out other forms of pleasure as well. While the terms sadist and masochist specifically refer to one who either enjoys giving pain (sadist), or one who enjoys receiving pain (masochist), many practitioners of sadomasochism describe themselves as at least somewhat of a switch, or someone who can receive pleasure from eith...

A: How could us moderators improve?

UndoAs user #12, I'd like to encourage the entire mod team. I'm almost 10k on Meta, that place where moderator actions are either upheld or torn into thousands of pieces, and thus have a somewhat critical eye for these things. I could point to maybe one instance of a question being prematurely close...

You're doing great.
14:49
@Undo Cheers, I've commented a bit to your answer. I think there's still way too many (judging by the number of ... oh dunno, events that pointed towards us as the source of problems) members that have somewhat different opinion. It could be merely some become antagonized by authority, but it isn't really any authority at all, so I posted that and hoped some that don't take the time to understand our position but do take time to judge it, will have the time to read it. (cont'd)
I'm also genuinely asking for suggestions, because there's always some little tweaking in it all that can be done.
15:24
I hope I'm not the only one to ask JUNO questions...
@PearsonArtPhoto I'm thinking of Juno who ...
Actually, you've asked one question already here in chat that I find quite interesting ... why isn't there any visible range camera onboard. Could it be worded into a question for Q&A that'd be interesting enough to answer?
There's enough questions about that going around, I'm sure you could get an answer. It'd be a good question actually.
I remember talking to a Cassini scientist (Well, Science student) about that very question about 7 years ago.

A: Dreams of Tatooine doomed

aramisThe Universe Today article is out of date. Since it's 2010 publication, NASA has in fact found planetary candidates in binary systems. The following links are more current infographics: http://phys.org/news/2013-03-capture-picture-tatooine-planet-orbiting.html http://www.space.com/17348-tatooin...

Q: Is the US Government being shut down affecting the deadline for the debt ceiling?

PearsonArtPhotoThe US government is shut down, and has been for one week as of writing. The government is also supposed to require a debt ceiling increase by Oct 17, or else the government will fail to be able to pay its debts. How is the first crisis affecting the second?

18:59
doesn't the US default on the debt if the deadline is not met
Yeah, but if the government's not running now, you'd think there would be some money saved, at least in the short term.
so uh, do only pay 51 weeks worth of taxes for 2013? :)

nice to think about, but filed under A for "ain't gonna happen"
Trying to decide if I should commit to Pearson's Amatuer Radio proposal - think I could add anything to it?
It's not at all an area of expertise, but I didn't think SpaceEx would be either. Thoughts?
@Pearson Thoughts from you?
20:10
Do it:-)
Are you willing to learn about it?
- Yes
- No
actually, I can't commit because I apparently already have too many SE concubines
astro really needs to go in public beta, so I get that beta badge and be able to commit to another one :|
20:28
I'm just a little worried about whether I'll have the time - with school and the Astro.SE people trying to give me a diamond, I'm not sure I can try to nurture another site.
I have to admit that I love the small beta community feel, though.
And I like getting in on the ground floor with new sites, just not sure I would dedicate enough time to make it worthwhile.
In all honesty, it's up to you. If you aren't interested in the subject though, and if you don't have interest, you'll probably just be a committer to help the proposal be bumped to the next level, but not consistant.
Sometimes that's okay, but it's up to you.
The more I think about it, the more I figure it would be best if I stayed out of it. I really don't want to bump the proposal to beta even a little prematurely - you might get a real expert instead of me. IMO, the site should have expert/really-want-to-participate committers, rather than those that don't plan on following through very diligently.
20:56
BTW, if anyone is interested, new DLR magazine has been published
21:53
I'm being victimized by govt shutdown ... no NASA TV :(
No ISS updates either, of course
