@RhysW Yeah I had to try to see how it comes out ... without is better anyway ;)
@TildalWave im afraid my brief revisit has come to an end, cya later TW! i need my sleep
@RhysW yup I'm off to bed too... sleep tight ;) see you around
and you, nice pics btw (Y)

Got to love it when I spend an hour to get a few "Fake Internet Points"
It turns out that people will do anything for fake internet points. blog.stackoverflow.com/2013/09/…
Although I've got to admit, I understand the physics behind changing orbits much better than I ever did before...

@TildalWave This one shows up; I like it. A little concerned about the light letters against the dark background though it may be because the contrast hurts me eyes

A United States flag is flown at half-staff just outside the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) Pad-0A with the Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares rocket, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia. President Obama directed Monday that flags be lowered to half-staff to pay tribute to the victims of "the senseless acts of violence" perpetrated at the Washington Navy Ya

14:39
@TildalWave that image looks pretty good and i love it ;)
Voted up :)
@Hash Thanks! I'll be posting a meta thread for our community ads soon. If anyone has ideas for our promotion through banners on other SE sites, don't hesitate to post it. We can sure use more visibility. ;)
'o Tildal (+: Up voted
@Everyone upvetoed sounded pretty cool LOL :)
@TildalWave: Pearson is the proposer for the Amateur Radio site, but it's yet to beta. Can S.Ex.SE be bannerized on Area51?
14:55
@Everyone A51 doesn't use banners, not to my knowledge at least.
I'm running out of obsolete comments to flag :(
I built an app so that I can search comments.
@Undo haha well, you'll have to learn to live without flagging then :P
I read that as 'flogging', thanks to scratches on the monitor
@TildalWave Upvoted all
16:27
@PearsonArtPhoto Upvoted
16:42
@PearsonArtPhoto Cheers! I've created a Space Exploration Meta thread for these ideas for community ads, and posted a sample answer / suggestion. Anyone that's into designing stuff should take some time to add their suggestions. We need to bring some life and atmosphere to Space Exploration :D
@PearsonArtPhoto Where did you post your A51 SEx.SE banners before? If they're still in active banner rotation threads and well upvoted, we could update them with any future banners we might make.
IIRC it was some moonrise photo with blue text...
1
Q: Ideas for off-site Space Exploration community promotion ads

TildalWaveThis is not a thread for community ads that would rotate on our own main site, those banner roatations are reserved for already graduated Stack Exchange webistes. However, nobody is stopping us from posting advertising banners promoting our own site and its features on other such Stack Exchange s...

17:16
32 upvotes gathered on 4 sites for that ad so far :)
it's all ad-ding up
We made it onto the Physics ad rotation: meta.physics.stackexchange.com/ads/display/2810
What does 'freeform improved quote' mean??
It probably means a quote that has been changed/improved.
thank you (+:
17:32
Woohoo!
@TildalWave Just a few sites, SciFi and Physics I think. I've since deleted them, but it could be done, in theory.
/me eyes Undo auspiciously
17:59
@PearsonArtPhoto They're your posts so you should be able to undelete them, use that as a fast launch platform :) I'd leave this ones as they are tho, I've been spamming a bit elsewhere too, asking for upvotes... so they should be doing well enough.
It could be done, but the places I placed the add already have the new graphic accepted, there's no point right now. It would have been a good idea, however.
18:15
@PearsonArtPhoto, @TildalWave: Proposed follow-up qn - What steps does LLCD take to reduce risk of injury to the general public? OR Is there risk of injury to the general public from LLCD?
@Everyone remind me, how many watts laser they use?
half - it should be pretty weak by the time it reaches surface
actually... it can't be more than about 300 W, it's LADEE... so no, there's no threat to the general populace... out of my head, the radius from the Moon would be probably in the vicinity of under a mile (guess), plus it's that power spread equally over the area, and a lot of it would be lost by the time it reaches the ground facility anyway
@Everyone Half a Watt? Meh, they'll need pretty good optics to even pick it up. It's about as harmful as the lightning bug's glow LOL
@TildalWave: spaceflight101.com/… 1550nm 0.5W Erb laser
@TildalWave: Well, yes. The thing is - LADEE is purely demonstration. Wouldn't it be ramped up once it is in production?
@Everyone Well yes, but you'd ramp it up so it can be picked up easier, not to engrave folks with a permanent LADEE tattoo. You wanna conserve your energy when there's no charging station for a quarter of a million of miles away :D
18:29
@TildalWave 0.5 W from the question.
1550 nm. Darn, got the wrong frequency. Sigh.
@PearsonArtPhoto Yup... which is barely enough to cause some permanent damage on small pixel CCDs, if you're really persistent.
Well, 0.5 w spread over such a distance...
my point exactly ;) that CCD disable would be over a few hundred feet at most
@TildalWave: Ah ... Sol is right up there smiling away at us (+:
@PearsonArtPhoto: Not a lot of difference there - but I don't really understand the math involved
You can test a camera for signs of life tho, like you'd do to a patient for involuntary reflex, by making its iris move. I even mentioned that in one Sec.SE answer: security.stackexchange.com/a/37687/20074 (was a fun question)
18:34
I'm pretty sure most stars are brighter than the laser will be, at least, most of the visible stars.
Shot-down. Ah well (+:
@Everyone You know, you can still ask a question. That's the advantage over answering them - you don't have to be right :D
Even when the question was already discussed in here? Uh huh
You don't know how many of the best questions come from chatrooms...
Actually thought, a better question would be how bright it would be compared to stars, and if that makes a difference in deciphering data from it.
@PearsonArtPhoto: All your's (+:
i'm guessing that would not be a concern with Luna in LADEE's background
18:50
Luna can produce some rather bright reflections compared to the night's sky, so that might not stand as true
I didn't know that ... but getting back to the risk to bystanders; uplick is approximately 10W; unless I misundersrand. What about any overflying aeroplanes, helicopters, or spacecraft?
I guess googling for "aliens on the moon" would produce loads of such events that were recorded :)
@Everyone data redundancy, ECC, e.t.c. ;)
Ah. James' question
@TildalWave: No copy on the last round.
Laser communications are used all the time anyway... probably more frequently microwave communications because of the atmospheric refraction, but half of the Paris is covered with such "lines"
Hm... solid stone/concrete would be a different matter, but are those directed overhead or LoS ?
18:59
The biggest problem is consistent targeting IMO. On the ground, all that works against you is earthquakes (rare) or stuff in the way (you move transmitters and receivers high up)... with LADEE, it'll constantly need to adjust for its orbital vector. But the good thing about it is its speed. So it might need to do that maybe for a few minutes each day? Dunno, depends on how much data it'll have to send.
microwave long range? how strong are they?
hmmm. never mind
I wonder whether they plan to test it's stabilization platform by sending it towards the nearest grav clump ... make a nice cartoon "Oops!"
@Everyone Depends ... HAARP is strong enough to cause weather to act up on global scale, allegedly. And it's still in the radio frequency range.
@Everyone I have enough reputation, I like to give others the chance to earn more;-)
3.6MW is pretty powerful, but it's HF long wavelength. It would spread out but 10W coherent light could cause unhealthy ventilation
@PearsonArtPhoto: Ouch! That landed below the belt
Time to change to Pjs ... back in a bit
@PearsonArtPhoto You think I should feature that meta post for the call for promo ads?
BTW tomorrow are two launches
19:16
@TildalWave In my opinion, go for it!
I only need one more helpful flag to get the first Deputy badge!
@Undo will it make you give your designing skills a spin?
@TildalWave Hmm, I don't know. I might take yours and add to it, though.
wow analogy alert! sorry!!
Now, someone go review my 80th flag!
Please?
Woohoo!
@Undo there
19:20
@Tildal Thanks! Now to wait for the system to award my badge...
@Undo here's an idea... take some simple design rocket like e.g. the antares and "paint" it in SE colors with the space.se written on it. Just make sure it doesn't look like some SEx.SE toy :D
I really like the concept of a horizon. Might play with it a little.
@Tildal BTW, where'd you get the translucent overlays for yours? The graphs and things?
The first Deputy badge is mine!
@TildalWave What's your opinion on the alien question? On or off topic?
6
Q: How many astronauts have reported an alien encounter of some kind?

called2voyageThis question will be controversial, so I want to start out by saying that I am not advocating any sort of conspiracy. I'm merely acknolwedging the fact that there are numerous claims that some astronauts have said they have seen UFOs or some other sign of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI). Som...

I'll have some fun with that.
@Undo I used "overlay" filter on the layer
19:25
I'll figure it out... eventually.
I'm a developer, not an artist :P
@TildalWave The dimensions are 225X200, right?
You need to "blend" it so the blacks become translucent, but not simply by deleting the color, it's easier to blend it "from-to", it comes out nicer
@Undo Yup, but I worked on 880x1000 then resized and sharpened
you might find it easier with some vectors, if the size is big enough while you design it... especially fonts that don't scale so nice with small sizes
@Undo actually no... the size ought to be 220x250, did I write it wrong in the meta post?
I probably remembered it wrong.
What's a First Deputy?
@Everyone I got the 1st [Deputy] badge - 80 helpful flags.
@TildalWave What was that font? I kind of like it.
@Undo: Yep. But what are the responsibilities/priv of the 1st Deputy?
19:33
@Everyone It's just a badge. Nothing more.
@Undo You didn't read the meta post, did you? :P It's Prometheus, and I had to cut a bit of the C, it looked almost like an O
@TildalWave I really should start reading things.
@Undo Yup, like for example that I have a much larger design template... do you need anything from it?
Nope, not right now.
I'm going to try it on my own, then we'll compare it.
19:37
@TildalWave: What do you use for design?
Bedtime. 'nini
@Everyone mostly Paint Shop Pro 7, but also others if that one doesn't cut it (it's a rather old software, but I like it and got used to working with it)
Ouch. Too expensive for me then. Btw, I'd like to see some activity on the milestones question - but before a bounty is posted - have space launch engines really seen any evolution over the last 50/60 years?
How's this for a start?:
GIMP has a 'lighten only' mode - perfect for this.
@Undo: What is that orb to the right?
@Everyone I think the Moon.
19:51
'k. I'm really off to bned now. 'night
Maybe... Let me work on it a little.
20:13
@Undo You mean you didn't take the photograph you used yourself? That might be a problem, because all of the ones I used were taken by me (off the internet) :P
@Undo you might wanna replace that "alien egg" with something else, and fix the kerning, but it's pretty good for a start, I had a lot less with my first post here when I asked for suggestions
maybe add a few constellations?
20:42
@TildalWave Wait - you captured all of your photographs?
But I can see copyright stuff.
And lawyers hating us.
So maybe yours should win instead of mine.
@Undo well it took me ages to get a good photograph of that supernova on top, but others were easy enough, I just had a bit of trouble scanning an old polaroid of the Neptune :P
no "slingshot around Uranus" jokes, please!! :D
@TildalWave I bow to your photographical superiority, and withdraw from the competition :D
20:59
@Undo noooooo
we need more suggestions, more to choose from...
G'day @DavidZ ;)
@TildalWave hi there
just briefly checking in
@DavidZ How's the Phy.SE modding?
@DavidZ no need to hurry ... we have plenty of space :)
@TildalWave Pretty typical. I guess there are fewer members than usual complaining about the running of the site, which is good.
@TildalWave heh, lol
@DavidZ let me guess, that would include @CrazyBuddy, right? :D
nah, CrazyBuddy doesn't really complain.
21:07
oh and of course @ManishEarth, he's never up to any good :)
haha
@DavidZ Hmmm 0 questions 0 answers on SEx.SE... How can we change this?
BTW I had one answer on Phy.SE but they moved it here, bastards! :D
I'm assuming actually making the site about sex is out :-P
I guess you know you're on the right site then
ha, true
BTW do you have any questions about how long will my fridge magnet stay there?
Like this you mean?
3
Q: How long will my fridge magnet stay attached to my fridge?

Matt LuckhamI have a 500 gram neodymium magnet. It is stuck to my fridge. With the constant pull of gravity trying to pull it off how long would it stay attached to fridge? For arguments sake lets say my fridge is very sturdy and will never need to be replaced! If my fridge was very sturdy would it still be...

21:18
@DavidZ hehe yes! I knew you have it! I was just thinking of @ManishEarth's suggestion I "ought to peddle my image-making arts on the other SE sites" and I thought to make one for Phy.SE to include on our site ASAP when we mature - i.e. when Luboš registers :D
Sure, couldn't hurt
Although I don't think current graduated sites tend to advertise on each other right now
Something is messed up with Area 51 - either that or I just got a ton of upvotes:
Last time I checked, 144k != 18.2k
I'll take the rep, though.
Yes.
Why does A51 say I have 144k?
@Undo 144k is exactly 100 days worth of minutes
21:22
True.
144000 has 2 representations as a sum of 2 squares:
144000 = 120^2+360^2 = 216^2+312^2
So it's a magic number.
ok well I'm off, see you all later
@DavidZ I've seen a few like that, and I wouldn't have problems adding Phy.SE banner here, if we had that option. I expect you'll be our most frequent migration path anyway, so users might as well be reminded there are other SE sites their questions might be a better fit for
And Astronomy 2.0 ... it just topped commitment phase on A51 and the private beta site should be up any minute now
@TildalWave We've been waiting days for it to start beta - and it never has.
@DavidZ Take care ;) See you around
Bye @DavidZ
21:29
@Undo How long did we have to wait? I forgot
@TildalWave Until the community managers tell the devs to create it, and the devs send out our invite emails.
@TildalWave When it does get created, you'll help me stir up activity in their chatroom, right?
@Undo Of course :D Talking of which, where's @RhysW ... he's completely abandoned us :(
My ears burn
I think he's always watching us.
@RhysW Heey! Speak of the devil! :)
21:36
@RhysW Better start posting stuff - you're falling behind in message count.
I served my purpose! Kept TW company til modship :P
Lol
@RhysW Are you going to help us bootstrap Astronomy.SE chat?
@Undo link me, i bettercommit before it goes live
Bam, committed with time to spare
21:40
And I got another referrall!
Yup! will get you a badge if i meet beta requirements too i think
Really? Didn't know that
i could be wrong, im speculating
@RhysW Right, so I should know whose interests to represent. But how will I know which interests those are? You should keep me updated more often!
@TildalWave Will do when my recent situations settle down dont worry!
21:42
Aaak, area 51 says I have 150k rep now!
@Undo Im the chuck norris of SE, you get extra rep for referring me :P
@RhysW What's your boss' phone no.? I don't think he (she?) realizes how important this is!
Could someone look at my profile about halfway down on this page? Does it say I have an extreme amount of network rep?
@Undo might be all the rep that was "undone"? :D
yup
21:45
I'm torn as to whether to report it :P
@Undo funny it still sorts you in the list according to the right amount of total rep
Hmm...
you could probably force rep recompute
@TildalWave For the whole network?
21:47
@Undo no, just the A51... let me find the link
I forced an A51 recalc, but it shouldn't make a difference.
(/reputation)
hmm the only sites I'm on a lot, are betas!
there, fixed that for you :P
This is Alot:
and this is Alot of pizza:
Aww i love that furry lil guy, not the first time ive been linked to it
@TildalWave ;) be nice! youre in my domain :P
Hopes TW doesnt spot the glaring flaw in his plan
22:05
@RhysW I'm nice. I'm always nice... and Boris agrees
@TildalWave I...I cant argue with that logic
I conceed
i have been bested
@RhysW BTW have you seen our community ad? It needs upvoting, thought you might have a few SE accounts up your sleeves...
@TildalWave Seen it, upvoted it, we went through this yesterday remember!
@RhysW Oh... yes, sorry. How about ELL?
@TildalWave English language and literature?
ah electronics
yeah i have one there too...
22:10
@RhysW you mean English Language Learners?
im in a lot of places!
but no ... Electrical Engineering... I misspelled the acronym I meant EE
hehe yeah im there too
though your 52 acounts puts my 31 to shame
@RhysW You counted? Or am I going blind and don't see the counter :O
it tells you
go to your profile, just above the long list is says how many there are
22:15
@RhysW Ah yes now I see... I was looking on the SE profile, wrong place
silly Tildal
:P
(and I actually counted too)
aha oh dear!
i should probably stop making a habit of trying to wind up mods... eh, im too loveable to ban :P
problem is I don't have my mod hat on... must be full moon or something, my brain waves are sublimating to outer space :O
get a satellite up there, broad cast it to the world and make a sitcom based off your thoughts!
22:21
@RhysW It was already made - it's called Men Behaving Badly
Why do you think I ended up on Sec.SE first? I've always wanted to be a security consultant :D
Ive just seen our advert on scifi!
looks fantastic because of their background of stars too
@RhysW You think there's any other SE sites suitable to push it on?
doesnt work on betas does it
?
@RhysW nope
damn
22:30
maybe maths?
would have been good to get it on writers, might interest them and book writing, who knows
maths, maybe even RPG
Home Improvement :)
...
Right, i need sleep!
cya around
22:53
@JonEricson Do I need to say somewhere in my app description that I'm not affiliated with SE?
If anyone would care to go through out closed questions and see if any are salvageable? Please see if you could edit them to be reopened, or leave suggestions in the comments and flag for our mods attention. Cheers!
@TildalWave For one, I think that [this] should be reopened.
@TildalWave Oh, this
13
Q: Is there an ISS replacement planned?

trapoAre there plans for another space station when the ISS is deorbited or de-manned? What are the details of these plans, if any? Bonus: How would a space station be built without the Space Shuttle?

I tried to salvage it.
23:06
And it's certainly an on-topic question.
13
Q: Is any space station planned to be put in orbit in decade 2014-2024?

trapoISS will be closed by 2020. Are there any other space stations planned to be put in orbit in decade 2014-2024 that have really chances to be built?

dupe?
@TildalWave I would say not.
ISS replacement vs. general 'are there any planned between these dates'
@Undo OK, I'll reopen and see what others think of it. Nothing wrong with exercising democracy, whenever it suits us mod dictators LOL
Lol.
@Undo Wanna flag any obsolete comments?
23:10
@TildalWave I ran out.
@Undo Of flags?
@Tildal Oh, there are comments on that post. Just a minute...
@TildalWave Now I am out of flags.
I have to go for 59 minutes without flagging anything :(
blimey
23:12
But I bet I still have the highest helpful flag count :D
23:32
@JonEricson Thanks!
23:43
@JonEricson g'day, long time no see!
@TildalWave Yeah. I've been busy on other sites. How are things in Space?
23 clicks from the community ad so far
@JonEricson Well enough I guess. A bit of a dip in stats, but working on it :)
We have plans :D
@TildalWave That's really typical. Once the initial excitement of a site dies down, it's time to build up a community.
@TildalWave Ominous. ;-)
@JonEricson Well the funny thing is, we actually have pretty good stats considering the fall in number of visits. So those that are active are trying hard, which is nice to see. Hopefully, we can get a few more of such, see if they hang out on some other sites and don't yet realize they were meant to be with us :))
