@TildalWave i think you have a question for the site
00:15
where's this at?
> Launch Complex-37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla
im excited, i need to pee xD brb
that rocket has got nothing on some of the ones ive exploded in Kerbal space program
what do they mean when they say pulled?

ACDC: GO~
oh god im excited
gotta love big toys :)
whats the purpose of this launch?

00:24
duh i even named the event*facepalm* stupid me
@TheProgramm3r quick get on this! livestream.com/spaceflightnow

@RhysW hehehe you're forgiven, it's rather late
90 seconds!
dont change to the computers now! shows us the rocket D:
00:29
I've been wonder's want's the purpose of the burst of flame on the side?
would you look at it go!
the speed of that thing
@Krazer I think its a warning flare
bbias
00:31
that seperation looked a bit iffy!
4 SRBs then... I only saw 2 on the launch pad... damn obstructed view!!
i thought only 2 aswell
oh come on that view its just KSP now
:D
"standing by for ignitions, and we have..." bloody audio feed cut-off!!!
did it for me too
wow that took only a few minutes to get to space thats insane
00:37
@RhysW 240 miles up now
first launch ive seen
that was still very fast
thanks for bringing it to my attention! please dont hesitate if you hear of any more
@RhysW I'll ask @DeerHunter how that launch events feed conversion to RSS is going... and we can then add it to chat room feeds
@TildalWave certainly can, just shout when its ready and ill integrate away
actually, I just did ask him LOL, he'll get the ping
@TheProgramm3r o i c
00:42
right cya all later i need sleeps
how long ago was that "10 min till launch" thing?
lol
@enderland 20 minutes :))
ahh well
00:56
Anyone recognises the coastline on that simulation?
looks like somewhere over NY to me, going towards the lakes
LOL... south-west coast of Africa :))
calculated wrong by 180° ... couldn't be more wrong than that
Q&A looks way too rehearsed, but who'd expect more for a military operation LOL

A: What sort of chat events could we schedule?

TildalWaveSpaceflight Now - Worldwide launch schedule                                                     Example schedule feed from spaceflightnow.com Website sadly doesn't host a RSS feed of its own, so I've created it using page2rss.com: Worldwide launch schedule RSS feed We have already succes...

I've made a RSS feed, hopefully it can be incorporated here to our list... if it receives enough approval, that is ;)

8 hours later…
09:49
@TildalWave recieves approval?
@TildalWave i integrated this one for a trial run

4 hours later…
13:27
@RhysW My English skills when I'm half asleep already... I think words get mixed up like I had some cerebral event, but don't worry it's the same for any other language ;)
@TildalWave haha either way i approved it and added it to the feed :P
@RhysW Yup I saw, the titles aren't too descriptive, maybe @DeerHunter can do better to convert it to RSS, I don't know of any such tools that let you select which field is what, short of writing it myself
14:04
Heeellllloooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Undo "morning"!

Q: Can plants grow in microgravity?

UndoIf a manned mission to another far-off planet were to take place, the crew probably would need something more sustainable than tubes for a food resource - plants would probably be the best option. However, almost all plants have a gene specifying that they grow against gravity. This would lead m...

@Undo You're probably specifically referring to complex, multicellular organisms? I thought it might be worth editing it in, otherwise the answer is way too easy. ;)
its not actually a gene that denotes growth
its a chemical thats dragged to one side of a plant by gravity which inhibits growth in those cells that means the plant grows upwards
@RhysW that too... it's two hormones
but the chemical is also affected by light, to make the plant grow towards it
so sure, no gravity, but there will still be light to grow towards
@RhysW and temperature ;)
14:15
i stopped explaining after a point where i already proved it one way :P
@RhysW how dare you stop explaining? :P
I thought... I'll pop a can of brewski and you feed me reading material :))
Wot — we have 15 questions, but I'm asking the first , really?
2
I managed an edit. Woot.
14:34
hehe did you guys see either the launch or the tests yesterday? / this morning

1 hour later…
16:01
@TildalWave - try this RSS feed. Not perfect.
@DeerHunter Cheers, yes this is a lot better than what I managed. I was even contemplating writing a parser and hosting it on my own server... but this is a lot easier, I'll edit it in and let's ping @RhysW to change it in the room feeds as well ;)
@DeerHunter I've updated the candidate RSS feed in the meta post ;)
@TildalWave Sir yes sir! :P
@DeerHunter Thanks
this is to replace yours then tildal?
RhysW has stopped a feed from being posted into this room
RhysW has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
@RhysW Yes... let's test if it gives better titles. By all accounts, inspecting the XML source, it should
@TildalWave done
16:16
@RhysW ^^ I see :P Thanks... now we need to wait for updates :)
16:45
Uhhh... Guys? The Space Exploration row in the all site list is borked.
Nice...
@Undo Post a bug report in meta?
I just did something that it's been a very long time since I've done it...
I posted on Physics.SE...

A: Explaining to a five year old - why don't bubbles run like water

PearsonArtPhotoAs all of the answers have mentioned, they key is surface tension. I would recommend demonstrating what surface tension is via experimentation. There are a couple of ways that it could be done (Belly flop vs straight in jumping in to a pool, for instance), but there is a YouTube video that demons...

@Pearson Because they're not water? Voodoo forces?
I'll go make a bug report...
@PearsonArtPhoto didn't read it all... but I'd start first explaining what's surface tension
@TildalWave My idea is to demonstrate what surface tension is. I think that's easier to do than to explain what it is...
@Undo what do you mean with "borked"? Short of having no stats yet, it displays it OK to me
16:53
We had stats previously.
@PearsonArtPhoto oh... :((
who keeps breeding and making these young kids that ask some fantastic questions!
@PearsonArtPhoto yes... I'll read your post later, but that was what I was thinking also, and bubbles are actually really good to demonstrate that
I found an interesting experiment on YouTube that basically involves sticking a needle on a tissue paper on water carefully.
The tissue will sink due to weight of the absorbed water, but the needle will stick on the surface.

Q: The Space Exploration row in the All Sites list is borked!

UndoI'm pretty sure we didn't do anything over at Space Exploration, but we just got all our questions and answers taken away: This makes it look like we have the most unengaged audience in the history of mankind. Could it be fixed?

17:04
@Undo Good post! I like the "This makes it look like we have the most unengaged audience in the history of mankind" :)
What's everyone think of this?

Q: How is data transferred from interplanetary missions?

gkyatl;dr I'm trying to find out information about the mechanics of data transmission from interplanetary appliances. I am curious about the kind of intermediate appliances, details on software utilized on receiving and sending sides and any other relevant information. This question here is part o...

Q: Can we ban the satellites tag?

PearsonArtPhotoThis site is fundamentally about space, exploration, and satellites. As a result, most of the questions could be tagged with the satellites tag. I think it should be banned entirely from the site. In addition, artificial-satellites should also be banned. However, tags with the word satellite mig...

I VTC'd it as too broad.
Are there any actual standards for what it means to "satisfy" a commitment?
@Donald Asked or answered at least ten questions during the beta, I believe.
17:13
Ok then, nine left to go.
@Donald From A51,
> I commit to participate actively in <site> for at least three months, especially during the private beta, and to ask or answer at least ten questions.
@Donald.McLean meta participation also counts towards that
right... 39°C here and I need to go carry water for mom's garden... I'm getting too old for this LOL, wish me luck :)
@Tildal Luck duly wished.
I commit to Beta. I marry Beta. Beta leave me with three kids :(

18:06
@TildalWave if your mum is still with the living you arent too old :P
18:24
Space. Is it really as harsh as they say?
19:01
@Undo Hello!
19:15
@called2voyage Hello!
Need something?
Nope, I just saw you were on and thought I'd drop a note.
Where do I know you from? Name sounds familiar...
It's good to see the site starting to get a little more steady with question and answer posts.
Several questions on SEx.SE
@called2voyage Yes, it is. I don't have much experience with beta sites, but this feels like it's doing well.
@Undo What do you mean my name sounds familiar?
19:17
@called2voyage Must be from reading it on your posts.
Username
Oh, ok
Answering the plants one was fun
When you posted it, I immediately remembered reading about plant experiments on the ISS, and it didn't take long to pull up the sources.
@called2voyage Really? Good! I was wondering if anyone would have info on that.
@Undo So what do you do for a living, if you don't mind me asking?
@called2voyage Nothing. I'm, uh, underage :)
Well, I program for the fun of it, and that draws in some cash, but that's about it.
Oh, cool. So your interest in space is just something you've picked up over the years?
19:23
@called2voyage Actually, it's something I picked up in the wild ride after commiting to this proposal 'just because'. Somehow I managed to get into the top 3. Don't ask me how :)
That's crazy! So not much interest in space prior to committing to the proposal?
@called2voyage Years ago, a little. But I was about 6 or 7 at the time.
I might just start committing to random sites and researching like crazy to get into the top three.
You should look into Micronations. It's a fledging with only 6 followers right now that I started, but I predict it will grow soon.
It could use some more sample questions.
@called2voyage Perhaps... not really my specialty (even less than space), but I'll follow and see if I can think of something...
So what are your primary interests outside of app development?
19:29
@called2voyage Yeesh - umm.... uhhh... space?
Maybe golf?
lol
Spend a lot of time on SE?
Somewhat.
Been here six months, have 14 some K
If I can make it show up.
there.
That's pretty crazy.
It's been a wild ride, I can tell you that.
I mostly contribute what I can from work.
So that limits the time I have to ramp up my rep.
19:31
Helps when you don't have work.
Where are the other guys? @TildalWave and @RhysW I've got something neat to show everyone...
Geoff Dalgas made thefinalfrontier.stackexchange.com redirect to Space.SE :D
No URL trickery there.
lol, that's pretty awesome
I know, right?
@called We need to ping all the regulars to see that - know if I can ping multiple people in one message?
I don't think you can ping people who aren't logged in if you aren't a mod.
@called2voyage Shoot. Know of any diamond vending machines? I have a quarter...
TildalWave and RhysW should have gotten your ping though.
@Undo Still looking for one myself...
19:38
Hope so - they'll love that.
@called2voyage I'm trying to get one here, but I think I ruined my chances by trying too hard :(
I wouldn't say so.
Though it probably would be better to have a little more subject matter knowledge.
True - but I'm learning quite... quickly. It feels like drinking out of a firehose :)
I try to find the answer (or an answer :P) to every question.
Heh, yeah. That's why I said I wouldn't say that you've ruined your chances. I think you've got potential.
@RhysW Too old to carry buckets of water in 39°C? I was born too old for that :P
Dedication and knowledge of the way SE runs helps a lot.
19:42
@TildalWave Yes! You're here!
See what Geoff Dalgas did?
He made thefinalfrontier.stackexchange.com redirect to Space.SE :D
@called2voyage Yes - 6k mSO rep in 6 months should help, no?
@Undo owww nice :)
@TildalWave It's in this answer:

A: Eeeek! The Space Exploration row in the All Sites list is borked!

Geoff DalgasI'm going to blame caching on this one. I'm looking at it now and I see stats. Also, space - http://thefinalfrontier.stackexchange.com

@TildalWave 39* C - what's that in crazy American temperature?
I'm too lazy to bring up Wolfram | Alpha :)
102.2°F
19:46
@TildalWave Beat me to it. I just had it calc'ed by hand.
@called2voyage you have many fingers!! :))
No one should have to haul water in that weather.
Well, not counting by hand.
@TildalWave What was with that encrypted.google.com? So the NSA can't read it?
Try hauling water in 120F
19:47
@Undo I'll forward this notion to my mom, I agree 102.2%
@called2voyage If @TildalWave doesn't come back, we can assume his mom grounded him :)
heh
By the way, I would say that Geoff's creation of the redirect is a fairly good sign that the SE staff sees Space as pretty successful so far.
I mean, I know it's easy to revert, but...just a feeling.
Absolutely. Or it was an office dare.
Now, if they had redirected, say, serverfault.com to us, we would know they like us.
Or would that mean they hate us?
19:50
@TildalWave Though, doing binary counting by hand can take you really far.
@Undo I think that would mean they got hacked.
And we should don our tinfoil hats.
@called2voyage to 1024, if you're a "normal human being"
or 1.048.576 if you include toes
@TildalWave Ouch, tell me how that works for you.
@called2voyage some basic binary arithmetic is pretty simple actually... being an utter geek does help too :))
yello
19:54
@TildalWave I meant the counting on toes in binary, not the binary arithmetic.
I agree that binary arithmetic is simple.
@called2voyage well... you can decide on one large number, but only once.... then it's gonna have to be smaller with each try
there's some numbers that are pretty hard to do with fingers alone too... try 320 for example
my fingers are pretty flexible
I don't have much trouble with them
my toes...not so much

Q: Are transient questions on-topic or off-topic?

gerritThis question received a close vote: When is FÄ“ngyún-3C planned to launch? What do we do with transient questions? Something similar may happen on Travel, if people are asking on how to travel to specific events. What is our policy for this?

Are we really off-topic enough to be talking about the flexibility of toes?
20:09
@RhysW Still here?
no
I need you to pin something.
whhats up
Geoff Dalgas made thefinalfrontier.stackexchange.com redirect to Space.SE!
3
No URL trickery there.
it can have a couple of hours as pinned then :P
20:11
Thanks - now everyone will know our real address.
20:42
You know, I really think that this site is among the recent favorites from the SE staff.
@PearsonArtPhoto - SEx.SE sites are appealing.
