18:10
We've got 5 users here hovering at the 2K mark. Come on now, someone else needs to get there before I hit 4K...
@PearsonArtPhoto stop showing off :P
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/08/06/lonely-curiosity-rover-sings-happy-birthday-to-itself-on-mars/?tid=pm_business_pop

singing curiosity rover anyone?
I wonder if they paid the copyright fee for that...
@PearsonArtPhoto i was thinking that but
technically, its not on earth
law doesnt extend to mars does it?
@PearsonArtPhoto hahahaha
It could be an interesting question, one that is likely to be a hit question SE wide, if anyone wants to ask it.
I give it to you, free of charge.
18:14
@RhysW it does, if it's broadcast here ;)
@TildalWave and thats being disputed anyway
warner might have to pay millions back in royalties
@PearsonArtPhoto nooooooooo..... I'm with Douglas Adams on this issue... build a giant rocket, pretend the Earth is in danger of being destroyed, evacuate lawyers into outer space ;)
sadly, the Earth did get destroyed, and those evacuees later formed Earth 2.0 :))
some say this already happened
the people in that video do an excellent job pretending to work
@Pearson I'm trying! It seems like when you want rep it doesn't come :(
@Pearson I might take you up on the free-question offer, though...
alright, yeah, SE bot is slow and dumb
I'll just post relevant tweets here
18:21
JohnB has stopped a feed from being posted into this room
Clearing the test pad! Preparing to LIFT! Do you know what that means?! It means that we will be streaming live soon! http://morpheuslander.jsc.nasa.gov/live/
@JohnB hehe i experiented many a time with it
why are tey talking about ice skating?
dunno, I muted that
reruuunssss
hehe
they are launching something right?
first ive heard of it
heard of what, what this Google Hangout thing is?
or Morpheus?
18:28
morpheus
ah. Morpheus is what they would like to use to bring payloads to the moon, and possibly elsewhere
Last time I watched they had it on a tether on a crane and tested the stability
they are testing it or actually launching it now?
just testing
what sort of tests?
not sure yet, but I presume they will try and make it hover like last time
18:29
ahh i see
thanks
Today we will use Martian soil simulant during the test - so expect alot of dust! Jeremy explains the objectives... http://t.co/o7BSl1G61U
so, hovering over soil maybe?
bringing in more intersted people btw
hey @TheProgramm3r!
speak of the devil :P
18:31
hey
@RhysW im the devil too?
@TheProgramm3r most definately :P
Uh fair warning btw, parts of this are going to be like watching paint dry...
but when they fire the rockets it's fun :D
18:32
thats why im here so you can tell me when the interesting bits are on :P
this is making me want to develop a game like Kerbal Space Program
KSP is awesome
sometimes things go wrong, and those are the most fun:
so, fingers crossed for something exciting like that! but not really. But sort of...
18:34
i love LOX, it makes things so flammable/explosive :D
@JohnB wow
just as well it was tethered
That video represents my KSP skills
better than mine
mine explode
mine are even worse
perfectly successful....
until im trying to do something important
like land....
18:36
I really with they would add multiplayer to KSP, but I think they said they won't
yeah, they did
@JohnB to difficult to manage time acceleratio
ah, good point.
very true
Would be fun to purposefully ram my friend's satellites to be a jerk though >:D
18:36
no! that's my job!
haha
oooh
here we go
Yep!
Pressure!
i hope that guy doesnt stay where he is
18:38
lols
ah good he is fleeing
the jpl :P
dammnit broken box
they're on it :P
yay
18:39
now would be horribble if it started for thos 2
the red light >:D
turn it off and on again? really?
the red light and the white button..... shouldnt those be reversed?
>:D
hey John
cant see a white light at day xD
@RhysW true
18:40
THAT'S the martian soil?
dammnit light go off, give up already
apparently
@JohnB haha
I was expecting like a whole big bunch of it haha
@JohnB :P
18:40
me too
but then they wouldnt be able to see :L
evactuation!
pressurization!
We are LIVE now at http://1.usa.gov/mr3Ybo just about 30 minutes or less until ignition! Tune in or miss it!
tests for the next 30 minutes I guess
i had to dock in eve for this
18:42
:D
they only have 3 hrs 40 mins of film left apparently :L
:L..........
hey Alex
what's that noise!
WHAT IS THIS
AM I IN SPACE
@JohnB the compressor?
18:43
a jackhammer! D:
@AlexM. we cant hear you, youre in space
I wonder what simulated martian soil is like
it looks silky
it should
martian dust is tiny tiny tiny
@RhysW of course you can, I'm not screaming
does anyone else see the red string?
18:44
@AlexM. what's that, Alex? You're screaming too loud!
@RhysW where?
its gone now
was in front of the camera
oh
lol more problems
18:45
they are on their way
no worries
:D
anyone active on twitter? Wonder if we could get a shoutout from the official account!
i dont have twitter
but that would be cool
not me! good idea though
i can go make one!
a public SE space account
there should be one made automatically eventually
I don't know if it's controllable at all. @ManishEarth?
18:47
@JohnB There already is one
Controllable, yes, but you need a big community
Arqade controls theirs
ah, cool.
If you are tuning in http://1.usa.gov/mr3Ybo what you see is the Mars soil simulant brought by JPL to help them better model plume effects.
does anyone elses video pause?
holy cow this chatroom has a lot more people than others I'm in ;_;
I forgot I had an account here.
18:49
@ManishEarth im making a twitter for Space.SE to try to get a shoutout
is that ok?
@TheProgramm3r Not exactly
you need to show that you're unaffiliated
talk to the comm team
(post on meta)
18:49
hey @enderland!
@TheProgramm3r all SE sites get a dedicated twitter account, another one might be distracting?
ah
who owns the twitter account?
there we go slowly gathering everyone together!
@TheProgramm3r it is automated.
@StackSpaceExp, The Stack Exchange network
A Q&A site for spacecraft operators, scientists, engineers, and enthusiasts
111 tweets, 3 followers, following 0 users
18:50
it's StackExchange's developer key
dang.... does anyone know how we can access it? or have someone access it for us?
@TheProgramm3r mods im guessing
probably too short of notice. They do these tests often though, so perhaps for next time
@ManishEarth can i make a community one for the chat? would that be allowed?
18:53
errm.. what is the upcoming event about? The most I know about space is what I learnt from Kerbal Space Program.
there is this thing that is going to be used to take payloads to possible mars or the moon
ah
and they are testing it above a bit of soil today
@TheProgramm3r as in?
post on meta
18:54
@RhysW nopes
@ManishEarth no i was definately guessing :P
im certain of that! :D
im trying to make one now :P
ill post on meta
ahahaha
smashy smashy
18:58
dammit, I looked away for 10 seconds and I missed it
that explains the red string i saw earlier! the recollection string
lols
@RhysW yep
eeeeeeee!
@TheProgramm3r post first
i will
havnt done it yet
18:59
here we go
Islam.SE created a Google+ page before posting about it, there were issues -- you need to make it explicit that it's unofficial and some other stuff that I can't remember
it moved!
AAAAAAAAAHH
19:00
...
lmao
what a view
so much dust!
yep
hovering :D
oooh its wobbly
19:01
woohoo
Perhaps I'll take a nap during the event.
dirt is on fire
hey Ninja!
top camera is a bit iffy
19:02
yeah
just a bit
@JohnB it is!
oh okay
that was pretty
crap
i need 5 rep to ask a meta question
lol
19:05
can you help me with that @RhysW
um sure, how? :P
idk
@RhysW give me a question to ask
on the main site
shrugs umm
cool! Middle School and Elementary Students programming satellites
(still watching the stream)
bbiab
Thanks for joining us for another successful tether test! We will post a video later if you missed it live!
19:11
@JohnB thanks john for organising it
yeah hopefully we can do more! I need to keep my eye on the twitter feed, I really wish they'd give more notice. Next time we'll schedule the event for a bit before the launch time since they started streaming about 20 mins before
@JohnB it would be nice yeah xD
Man is the best computer we can put aboard a spacecraft, and the only one that can be mass produced with unskilled labor. - Werner von Braun
5
@JackBNimble Except that von Braun died in 1977, back before any computers worthy of the name had even been built.
@JohnB :D
19:19
:D
So nothing blew up in the test? I didn't watch it.
@Donald.McLean Nag nag nag. The man had vision.
Oh great, I've missed it :(
@JackBNimble Yes, he had heck-of-vision, no arguing that. Just saying that today's computers are a pig of another color compared to anything that von Braun ever saw.
Pigs in SPAAAAAACE!
Humans are more adaptable than robots.
Perhaps not as much as pigs though.
@JackBNimble True, but there's still cost/benefit. Putting a human into space is heck-of expensive.
19:28
Machines don't experience things, and even when they will, they won't be capable of relying that experience to us in human terms, not until you can't make out the difference between a machine and a human, at least
does anyone want to include something in my tweet to @MorpheusLander?
@TheProgramm3r when's the next event scheduled for?
It was actually difficult to find an article that I could link to in an abusive way to ask the question that I had.
I made a bookmark of the conversation, @TheProgramm3r chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/9682/conversation/…
But the first time I read through the article, I really thought there was some sort of a speaker on Curiosity, so... Guess that's what I get for not paying enough attention.
19:34
@JohnB thanks
@PearsonArtPhoto I was first thinking there might be that beeper speaker on the motherboard that they programmed... that's also perfectly achievable, but then I realized - who'd the darn thingy beep to? LOL
@JohnB thanks
i have sent my 2 tweets to them out!
@TildalWave i don't know. I tweeted to @MorpheusLander asking though.
@RhysW @JohnB IMPORTANT
@TheProgramm3r cheers!
user image

test should be next Tuesday @JohnB
@TheProgramm3r You can just post a link to the tweet, and it will be included here, no snapshot needed ;) Each tweet has "details" link, that can be copied here, and it then looks like:
@TheProgramm3r Hopefully next week. Maybe Tuesday?! Cross fingers.
19:42
@TheProgramm3r ooh nice
We have good programmers so we can all be a little bit more lazy LOL
@TheProgramm3r holy crap! nice!

Q: What coordinate system is used in space for navigation?

trapoOn Earth is possible to define the position of something using WGS, and the same system is used for navigation. What is used in space instead? Are different systems used for Earth-orbiting objects (the ISS for example) as opposed to objects beyond LEO (Voyager 1/2) due to practical reasons?

Folks - gentle reminders about great unanswered questions. Just a little writeup: and a whole lot of rep awaits you :)
:D
@JohnB can you pin the pic?
19:46
Sure!

Q: Do all launches include self-destruct mechanisms?

coleopteristDo all launches involve self-destruct mechanisms? How do they usually work? Is it just the boosters that are required to self-destruct? In the case of the space shuttle, how about the external tank? Are the mechanisms only manually triggerable?

@DeerHunter I presumed you'll drop an answer of your own :?
@TildalWave - not yet, I've repcapped today.
@DeerHunter write one for me? :P
@DeerHunter hahaha OK then you're excused.... you've rep capped on IT Security also?
19:48
@TheProgramm3r - you can do it.
@JohnB :P to bad i cant star my own post
@TildalWave - only once - with the crash question.
@DeerHunter i could :P except i have no clue :P
@DeerHunter enough to get the mortarboard badge ;) I didn't rep cap that often there either, not with The Bear around LOL
@TheProgramm3r - a great opportunity for you. The easiest one is the coordinate systems.
19:50
@DeerHunter :P
@TheProgramm3r - just read a bit on Reference Frame and Coordinate System pages.
i have to go, guys! You can almost always reach me in the GD.SE chat (Game Development) or by tweeting @TheProgramm3r
@DeerHunter someone else can have it... :P
bye!
@TheProgramm3r :P bye take care

Q: Why do pressure fed engines have combustion instabilities?

AlanSEReading about the Sea Dragon idea, I came upon this argument against it, which sounds compelling, but relies on more detailed knowledge than I have: Those are to be pressure-fed to avoid "complexity". Complexity? How about combustion instability from runaway pressure waves the size of houses?...

@TildalWave - I've been looking around for an RSS feed with upcoming launches, have you seen anything like that? BTW would be handy for SEx.SE as well.
@DeerHunter spaceflightnow.com/tracking (doesn't have a RSS feed tho... I'll keep looking)
@TildalWave - no prob, I'll try to make an auto feed from it (feed43.com and the like - IFTTT, perhaps).
20:00
@DeerHunter Could work, great idea :)
Another Q in the queue: How many rocket scientists does it take to change a light bulb:
6
Q: What is the fewest number of satellites required to have constant global coverage?

PearsonArtPhotoHow can I guarantee global coverage with the fewest number of satellites? Assume that link margin isn't a problem.

@DeerHunter IT Security is the best for asking a question and getting rep capped, lol
@enderland - I do remember that, ROTFL.
I have a little over 1k rep for a single question there
@enderland - how often do you receive trailing upvotes on the Q?
@enderland hehe that was a good one... and a new sec.se meme came out of it too:
11
A: The Memes of IT Security

TildalWaveMeme: Security Monkeys Synonyms: Chimpanzees, Chimps Originator: @ThomasPornin, @TomLeek (for Security Monkeys), @TomWijsman, @CharlesDarwin (for Monkeys) Date of conception: March-April 2013 Cultural height: TBD Purpose: TBD (see below) Background: Thomas' answer to a question What techni...

@enderland - still you won't catch any of the bears
@TildalWave - alas it's too early for SEx.SE memes. Hope it gets out of beta soon.
@TildalWave oh funny
@DeerHunter That'll be too easy really... there's millions of space related memes, and hard to avoid too
we might not have enough space for all of them :))
@TildalWave - time to start scrounging through XKCD and WhatIf.XKCD for links & pixies.
20:10
@enderland BTW you still didn't accept an answer there... still room to stir things up LOL
@TildalWave LOL
@TildalWave - ...I saw an XKCD graph generator Q&A somewhere on SE, may be useful, too.
382
Q: xkcd-style graphs

Amatya I received an email to which I wanted to respond with a xkcd-style graph, but I couldn't manage it. Everything I drew looked perfect, and I don't have enough command over PlotLegends to have these pieces of text floating around. Any tips on how one can create xkcd-style graphs? Where things loo...

Q: Does a magnetically suspended frog feel weightless?

Sebastian HenckelMagnetic levitation has been used to suspend frogs in midair. I was wondering: Does the animal still feel gravitational pull? I mean: Does the frog feel like an astronaut on the ISS, or does he feel like a trapeze artist suspended by a harness?

Okay, bye everybody, crawling away for the time being.
Nice job @TheProgramm3r with those tweets

2 hours later…
22:28
Now 3 hours away from liftoff of @ulalaunch Delta 4 rocket. Fueling of the vehicle is entering the final phases now http://spaceflightnow.com/delta/d363/status.html
@TildalWave want an event?
This was an hour ago... the live stream is available here or here
oh its a recording of one thats already happened ok
@RhysW If it's not too much of a bother, then yes you could add it to the list ;)
3 hours... Shoot, I'll be somewhere else :(
22:30
@TildalWave if you can give me a UTC time i can do it
@RhysW No no... the tweet is announcing an event in 3 hours, but the tweet itself is 1 hour old... so 2 hours left for the liftoff
@Rhys Lets see, two hours from now, that's about 0:30 UTC, right?
its late for me im easily confused :P
1:30
@Undo 2 hours ;)
i think
22:31
Yes. Two hours from now should be 0:31 UTC.
Unless I'm wrong.
no you are right
@TildalWave done
@RhysW Cheers! I hope I'm still up tho, I already missed one event today :)
ouch, i might stay up just to watch it
or sleep for 2 hours and wak up
22:42
right, I'm back to rewatching The Best of Not the Nine O'Clock News... should keep me up for 2 hours :)
23:42
Webcast: Delta 4 rocket launching the WGS 6 military communications satellite (Live in 28 minutes) http://www.ulalaunch.com/site/pages/Webcast.shtml
28 mins?
thats sooner than the event starts
@RhysW that's the start of the live stream on the ULA page
oh right including all the blah blah blah before the launch
1 hour from launch
@RhysW dunno, not sure it's gonna be a hosted coverage, prolly just live feed... there was no mention of commentators
maybe audio feed from mission control?
i hope
that there is sound of some sort
23:59
I checked some videos from previous launches and they have the mission control audio feed... I did ask on twitter too, if it's planned (or commentary) for this mission, hope I get a reply
