@AnnaLear About how long until mods are chosen?
01:53
:|
@JohnB ?
@Undo ?
02:38
@JohnB /cc @RhysW @TildalWave I certainly could migrate, but it is borderline on topic for us (close to being engineering). It's best if left the way it is
@DavidZ Space Exploration SE is still new so while migrating it and merging on the Space Exploration side may be better, I'd just leave it be unless it's categorically off-topic here. — Anna Lear 4 hours ago
@Undo Probably about a week, give or take? Robert would normally be picking out mods for you guys, but he's on vacation till later this week and one of the rest of us might get to it, but we got a lot of stuff going on right now. I'll try to take a look tomorrow cause I don't like to delay these things... but no promises.
@AnnaLear pick me pick me!
:P
@AnnaLear Pretty early for pro tems imo, though then again this site has much more activity than Chem did
Nah, not early. If anything, we're a few days late already.

2 hours later…
05:15
Ah

4 hours later…
09:33
@ManishEarth shh, youre already a mod! go back to sleep!
10:17
@ManishEarth You handle it in such a way then, that we all here learn from it. We'll then later apply same logic to any similar cases, and blame you if ever disputed :P :))
Personally, I'd like to know more what's the established procedure for the "dupe" here, that doesn't (didn't, need to check) have an answer, but has it on another site
especially, because the answer on Physics is as good as they get
11:11
@RhysW Twice a mod. Not sure if I could handle an extra diamond -- if I did take one on it would be on a site I'm passionate about.
@TildalWave lol
@TildalWave Usually, the rules for migrations are that you migrate only in these situations:
- The post is a good, but off topic post for you
- It belongs in a scope overlap and doesn't get answered in X days but has a much better chance of being answered on site B. Again, needs to be a good question
- The OP requests it
- Debatably/borderline on topic for you probably will tumbleweed) but very very obviously on topic elsewhere. This is a rare case
So no procedure for 'Op asks the same things twice in two different places?'
Getting to that
In the case of migrating to betas, you usually avoid it unless it's quite good. And the community and/or tyrant mods must agree
For "op asks same thing", it really depends
Is it quite on topic on both sites? Leave it there. You can get answers from different POVs
I guess, makes me feel edgy though
Is it borderline but a good question? Migrate+merge
@RhysW Give him time to type! He's probably typing on three keyboards and to a dozen sites at the same time... I'd like to think he's an octopus-human mutant, but he probably isn't, if the mod hat fits :)
11:15
However, in this case, you guys are an early beta
@TildalWave OctoDad?
@ManishEarth Us guys, youre part of it too :P
So even though it's borderline on topic for us and from the POV as a Phys mod I don't have any objections either way, the receiving site should/could have objections. Or, in this case your foster tyrant mod @AnnaLear :P
@RhysW I'm confined to the chatroom, I only have 1q+1a on the site
@RhysW Octomuon!
@ManishEarth That's just cheating... I thought there's a point to all your explanations, but you've just used them to wear us down and throw us a bone where we don't dare venture! :P (joking)
@TildalWave lol
@TildalWave Currently, one keyboard, two active tabs and a bunch of other random ones
@ManishEarth she only struck fear into me for 10 minutes, cant be that bad :P
11:21
@RhysW She's a cat. And Russian. And Canadian. And American. Pretty deadly combo
Mainly the cat bit
@ManishEarth So what do we do? Open a can of lager, sit back, and see it handled by the big guys/galls? Because I'm completely fine with that, it's 37°C again... if someone could find something worth watching on my telly as well, that'd be even better :)
@TildalWave Yeah. Basically, nothing to be handled here
While later on it may be a good idea to migrate+merge similar cases, right now there isn't.
@ManishEarth Good. Case closed! :)
Exactly
We're so efficient :)
11:24
I dragged on on this because most folks on SE don't understand how site overlaps work wrt migration
hmm, if tildal becomes a mod that sort of makes me the odd one out of us 3
@RhysW Nominate! (Om)Nom!Nom!Nom!
@RhysW You're a mod of sorts already... you're the chat room owner.
@TildalWave nah i just get italics and gold stars :P
and as a mod you could even remove me from that position
really im just a glorified spammer :P

@RhysW that's an opportunity to evolve... see Scott Pack in the DMZ for example, he's the world snark champion for the last three years running
11:28
@TildalWave the what?
@TildalWave no not that i meant the DMZ :P
@TildalWave Visit the DMZ some day. We're fun.
@RhysW IT Security chat room
Though I'm not sure if I qualify as a DMZ regular, 'specially since I haven't visited in the past week

 The DMZ

A serious place where infosec is discussed PS we don't do hard...
11:30
@ManishEarth I'd say that you do... and Scott hasn't been there much either, he's moving cities I believe

2 hours later…
13:26
RhysW has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
@StackExchange Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

1 hour later…
14:50
@Undo - I'll let you sweat for 10-15 minutes, maybe you'll figure it out what I mean in the meantime :P if you figure it out - it's just a joke, I'll put things back in deserved place soon enough :))
15:04
@TildalWave undo hasn't said anything, are you having a breakdown? :P
@RhysW No worries... I just played a small practical joke on him, but if nobody actually noticed it, then my plans have failed :((
@TildalWave I can't find it. No serial down voting, I can't find any edits to any of my posts....
@Undo Hint: I was looking through what's new on meta,... there aren't many changes today, actually I think only one - and it's yours :P
@Undo remember what you changed?
15:19
@TildalWave Just a minute...
Yes...
his evil scheme is that he hasnt changed anything :P
@RhysW That's... Evil...
@Undo Wait, it's not allowed now to upvote @ernestopheles' posts just so I have to upvote even more of yours :P I'm not even sure you have so many answers without my upvote ...
@Tildal I saw that, but thought it was organic :)
@Undo One was mine, just for kicks... then two followed, so I had to find 3 of your answers now LOL
15:24
@Tildal Wow - I hope you don't get busted by the system for serial voting :)
@Undo Neah ... 3 is fine, I believe even 4 should be

Q: Why are spacecraft computers obsolete at launch?

GreenMattOne might think that spacecraft would be on the cutting edge of technology. However, when looking over details of spacecraft, it seems their computer systems are often very much behind the times. For example, the Curiosity rover was launched in 2011, when consumer laptop systems ran in the GHz ...

I didn't even read top two answers here before... at least I found something to read :)
Wait - we have a [myth-busting] tag? Really?
@Undo we do? hahaha
sigh, i need someone to post a meta post at some point so i can test something xD
@Undo thats disappointing :P
@RhysW What do you want to test?
15:33
played around with the feed settings for this room
@RhysW Why don't you post it yourself?
it'll come, no need to spam
@JohnB He could post a question about which feeds we'd like to see here :P
that he could
haha, yeah ill just be patient though, im in no rush

2 hours later…
17:25
I chose to have Cherrios for breakfast. Does that mean that I'm guilty of cereal voting?
18:19
18:55
yes it is

Q: Have there been any recent lunar rovers?

UndoIt seems that most rover-related attention recently has been on Mars, with Curiosity recently getting there. However, it seems there are also benefits to exploring places a little closer to home, such as the moon. Have there been any unmanned surface missions to the moon in the past decade? Hav...

My institute actually has a group working on a mars rover
@ManishEarth Seriously?
Link?
sites.google.com/site/msiroverwiki (not sure if this is legit)
I've done a bit of work on the Mars thing, some electronics and coding basically
That's really neat.
So you must write the code that figures out if the green things should be nuked or not?
Neither the satellite nor the rover have been launched yet
But the satellite is close, I think
@Undo lol no
It was a tiny bit of assembly for a control circuit
19:16
How would you get it launched?
@Undo that's not the tough part :P
How do you think comsats get launched?
Ship them to NASA?
Or a private gig with the resources to do it?
@Undo Most countries have their own space programs. India has ISRO
You must live in India? Wouldn't it be like midnight there?
yeah
so?
I'm a student
19:20
:)
I wondered why you weren't on in the latter parts of the day here.
@ManishEarth I guess you get so used to everyone being between EST and MST that you forget about the other 3/4 of the world :P
Because sleep is overrated
lol
Mine actually has white areas:
Most people do
I don't always keep a monophasic/biphasic sleep schedule, and my schedule varies depending on vacations/college, home/college , etc.
So I get a pretty good spread
Were you in on the A51 India proposal that got shut down?
@Undo Not exactly
I was one of the doomsayers, though I had followed/committed to it (If it was going to be allowed, I wanted to try hard to make it succeed)
19:29
@ManishEarth Wow.
It seems this site has really... slowed..... down......
which?
Space.SE
There don't seem to be as many new questions as there should be.
@Manish How do we have a user6972 when we only have 446 users?
Account association
Ahhh
19:36
So that was their first account and they never changed their username.
yeah
We have a rather active (3k+, meta active, chat somewhat active) user1504 on Physics
He likes it that way
I imagine it would be like being user10 on Stack Overflow - you would get used to it and eventually like it
Anyway, got to go now. Bye!
user13
Still active
cya
19:54
We need to somehow make people vote more often... @Undo you got in total 70 rep points today, and out of that 45 were from me (4 answers, 1 question). OK, it might be a slow day and us pretty much the only ones here, but I think that if we vote more frequently, people will check their accounts more often and maybe "compete" a bit more (hopefully in healthy ways). We have users active on other SE sites, and they might see notifications then more often, e.t.c. And, we need more high rep users...
Plus, a lot of the content is IMO pretty good (counting only open questions), even considering the nagging we don't have enough experts from the first days of beta.
Do we need to "counsel" some of the committed folks?
@Donald.McLean I was checking the numbers on A51 and they seem fine in that regard actually... I was wondering as well, but the percentage is high enough (68%) compared to other current sites in beta, even some that were in beta for a lot longer time... but sure, if you can think of some ways to do that, it probably wouldn't go amiss. :)
And it's summer, with I guess many that committed on vacation and might do it a bit later e.t.c.
Thumbscrews.
20:17
Now I need a couple people to go review my suggested tag wiki edits. I'm not quite as spectacular at it as @TildalWave is, but I'm close :)
@TildalWave You're 1.5k now, just so you know :)
@Undo Wheey success! I can review tag wikis now, no?
@TildalWave Yep :)
It's kind of frustrating that you can review tag wiki edits but not make them, but whatever.
@Undo hehe cheers, I just did 5 or thereabout of those you edited
@TildalWave I didn't think it was even close to 5 - I thought I only made 3.
Maybe they were old ones.
@Undo No mod / privilege hammer on that one, we need to agree on their meaning for the use of our website, I think it makes sense to go into the review queue
@Undo Possibly, I only read the contents, not all metadata about them
20:25
True

What are we still missing to get the "about" page? I mean, do we need to discuss something more about it on meta? I would also like to start the "community promotion" banners competition, maybe add one that links to our newsletter subscription: stackexchange.com/newsletters/…
If someone wants to do this tonight, then go ahead, I'm off to bed early tonight, but will take some time for it tomorrow, if it'll still be needed
