Q: Does colonizing another planet mean you will never see another rainbow?

James JenkinsAlternate title; Can leprechauns only hide their gold on earth? We know from Flying on dense atmosphere planets & moons that many bodies in our solar system have sufficient atmosphere for at least the concept of flying to be considered. What about the beauty of a rainbow, the sun reflecting t...

why, just why

@RhysW Dreaming... an essential part of space exploration. :) I've dropped a "short" answer there, looking into a few possibilities. Feel free to correct me, or add your own take. I currently don't have too much time doing more research, so I just tried to prove it's possible with the most obvious example I could think of LOL
@RhysW Or maybe "space exploration user experience"? :))

We need moar good questions!! C'mon peeps, homework: Think of at least one question you're really interested in and know enough about the subject to form a good and specific enough question!

@TildalWave Give me an example.
@Undo hmm... dunno now, I'm busy at the CTF we're competing in ... give me a few minutes, maybe I can think of something
@TildalWave You think of something, and I'll ask it :)
@Undo LOL you got it,... thinking of something is the hard part actually, writing about it is the trivial part when you can include as much information you'd like in the question and let the answers do the rest :)
@TildalWave And Googling the questions is the easiest part of all :P
@Undo Well it's a tool, so why not use it :P But I don't like googling only answers to be honest, I'd expect from some (not anyone here, mind you) to at least include their take on the matter, maybe explain how reliable data they're quoting is,... stuff like that
and you can include among "googling" also "wolfram alpha-ing" :)
15:02
@TildalWave I love WolframAlpha - it's the best thing since... Google.
sorry, I lost this chat tab somewhere among 50 others LOL
@TildalWave Might have to click on that to see it. I don't have very many tabs today :P
@Undo I have CTF tabs open also, there's dozens of those on top of all the SE ones... running low on memory already LOL

A: Radiation shielding magnetic or mass, which is more efficient?

Thomas PorninIn space (within the Solar system), you will get mostly two types of "radiation" that have health consequences: Photons of various energy, from long wave radio to gamma rays. High-energy charged particles, mostly electrons and protons ejected from the Sun upper atmosphere (this is known as the ...

This answer deserves a lot more upvotes IMO
@TildalWave Yes it does. One dispensed.
I don't know how I missed that one.
@Undo Cheers! Also need help with another one of his, just answered one of my questions, and there's 2 answers from before that also have 1 upvote, but the difference in quality is apparent

A: Any possible setbacks in deorbiting larger space junk and let it burn up upon reentry into atmosphere?

Thomas PorninReentry can be hazardous, for several reasons: The debris might not burn up completely. Whether a given object will be consumed in the upper atmosphere depends a lot on its materials, shape, velocity, reentry trajectory, and even direction (to take an extreme example, a Gemini spacecraft had a ...

15:14
@TildalWave Another one given.
I might have to start watching him for good answers.
I upvoted, but that means it's lost with 2 others having 1 upvote each... and I'm not downvoting the other two, they are of some use and didn't really completely shoot in the dark
@Undo Cheers again!
@TildalWave :)
@Undo Well... The Bear is really knowledgeable, and our top user on IT Security
@TildalWave That explains it.
@TildalWave I can't hardly wrap my mind around how to securely store two string pairs in a server. Let alone get 91k rep on Sec.SE!
@Undo It's more than that
He's the top rep and 4th from top
15:18
@ManishEarth 91.7, then.
It's a legit sock, no cross voting
@ManishEarth WHAT!!! He did it twice!
???
@ManishEarth Wow!

Rory AlsopMeme: Bears Originator: @ThomasPornin, @ScottPack, @AviD Cultural Height: July 2011 Background: Our highest rep user, cryptographer Thomas Pornin created a couple of distinct accounts with bear avatars. 15:20
@ManishEarth I've seen that.
But it never sank in that he did it twice.
@ManishEarth What's it like modding a beta site? Less stressful than SO, right?
Way less
@ManishEarth Think I could do it?
16:09
@Undo LOL even I have more than that difference in rep on sec.se
and I'm barely on 1st page with 6k something
@ManishEarth That LGBT photo ... not sure I wanna comment, but let's just say I have an attitude towards it LOL
And who in heaven's name would be downvoting memes? Quite a lot of them there have at least one downvote :O
Well, I say "quite a lot" when in fact there's two of them... but one is posted by me (not invented by me tho), so it feels worse
16:25
Manish and I had a good chat about my adequacy to mod here. He showed me some spots I'm lacking in, and in the end suggested I still go for the diamond here.
Anyone who wants to read the chat should be able to go here. I'm completely open about where I lack, and what I'm doing to improve :)
@TildalWave scared of bears?
17:34
@JohnB well those are cuddly in all the wrong ways, at least as far as I'm concerned :))
@Undo We don't have many questions on mapping our galaxy for example, of how the coordinate system works in space, e.t.c... Maybe start with a canonical question, then build from there, if more questions appear?
Or maybe if we have ability to determine coordinates based on the position of the stars, and how far away from Earth have we mapped the Universe that would allow us to do so... and how does time and movement of celestial bodies affect that ability to determine coordinates... I think this could make for at least a few interesting enough questions

Q: How can spacecraft navigate without contact from Earth?

coleopteristMy understanding is that probes within the Solar system primarily rely on Earth-based tracking networks and ephemeris data to navigate. Once they get really close to their destinations, they can optionally also use visual tracking to position themselves. But how would spacecraft, e.g., those on e...

@TildalWave they're harmless :)
@JohnB not if you're too good looking :P
*slathers honey on TidalWave*
18:24
scrapes honey in pots, sells at the local market and buys beer... might be less attractive, but has also suitably lower expectations with each beer downed
damn, that doesn't sound right... I might still end up with a bear, if I'm not careful :))
19:17
@TildalWave Just go get into a house. Load shotgun.
Wait - how did we get this off-topic?
@Undo A DMZ and TL regular invaded
you started it!
19:51
You realize our chat room's acronym is TPB, aye?
@TildalWave I did not. Nice.
Such an honor to share an acronym with tetraphenyl butadiene!
i think im too immature to be here, my first instinct was much more crude than tetraphenyl butadiene
mine was The Pirate Bay, but tetraphenyl butadiene was my best attempt at a joke
20:16
@RhysW now I'm curious what that was
@TildalWave not something i can repeat :P
as room owner you can say it then nuke it!
or we can play hangman
@JohnB haha, room owners cant do the nuking i dont think :P
@RhysW Tender Plump Breasts?
@TildalWave this game could be entertaining

@JohnB ROFL
@TildalWave by entertaining i meant entertaining guests with food, like chicken breasts
of course
the t is The
@RhysW well obviously, we're no perverts here, we just happen to use similar terminology, but for utterly different reasons
20:20
@TildalWave yes, completely this, :P
How easily we could be misunderstood... the world is full of prejudice :(

1 hour later…
21:52
@RhysW How did you get to be room owner?
22:21
@Undo i was the most active user in the chat room when the script was run to determine a room owner

1 hour later…
23:41
@RhysW Ahh. That explains it.
