@Undo how come?

2 hours later…
09:09
@Undo hmmm I can't see yet the votes breakdown but it looks like you got some downvotes? I don't like those on election nominations either, they seem ... hostile. :(

1 hour later…
10:35
Are people that committed to Space Exploration on Area 51 but didn't sign up for beta (33.5% according to the site proposal page) notified more often via email that they're invited to join? I'm asking, because that percentage seems a bit high and we did start the beta during summer vacation times, maybe some missed the invitation in their inboxes?
We only have ~ 290 users in total, and the number of questions per day is rapidly falling... I think it's time we start more actively forwarding invitations, maybe also resend them to those that committed but didn't yet sign up?
11:03
hmmm well going through other sites that are in beta for at least as long as ours, the percentage of signed up members that committed is actually on average even lower :O

1 hour later…
12:25
@TildalWave thats just how it is for beta's i guess, takes a while to build up the fan base
@RhysW Yup, I realized that later, when I did a bit of research on A51... sorry, can't type much something bit me in the finger a few minutes ago... hurts like hell LOL
5 finger typing is slooooooow :))
12:55
@TildalWave haha, no worries, im currently typing slower due to having hands full of thistles
@RhysW Huh? You're arranging ikebanas? :O
@TildalWave nah, just had one hell of a party this weekend gone
@RhysW sounds like it too... how's sitting down working for you? :)))
@TildalWave sitting is fine :P my legs however are not, they are in ruins :L
@RhysW so you were chasing white rabbits somewhere on the meadows? picnic gone wild?
12:59
@TildalWave brazil themed party, too many cocktails
@RhysW hahaha you Brits! You get 30°C+ for a few days and it's Brazil parties already :))
wish I was there tho
@TildalWave it was fantastic, by far these best party ive been to in a long time
@TildalWave hah, im happy with my cold weather tbh, british through and through :P
@RhysW probably the hottest day in the year here today... somewhere between 34-37°C in the shadow... and there's obviously some competition going on for what shadow there is, I must have annoyed some ant or whatever bit me in my finger while I was under some tree LOL
Hi guys
oh and to make things worse, it's really humid even with some wind... they promised thunderstorms for later in the day, maybe night and a "cool" 28°C for tomorrow :)
@Mr_Green hi there!
13:06
how is the site?
I mean how is it going?
@Mr_Green is there a mr_blue who also comes wherever you go? :P
hehe no
thats unfortunate :P
@Tildal I just spent a week in India. In monsoon season. 35 degrees and enough rain that it feels like you are in a bath. Glad I'm back in 18 degree Scottish weather
im at home in the cold temperature, give me arctic over tropical anyday
13:11
@RoryAlsop I can't think straight even, yup it's a darn sauna, hope it's the last day of this heat wave :|
do you guys work at stackexchange?
@TildalWave dont think straight! if you think straight you never get to cross over other lines
@Mr_Green I think we're doing fairly good for 6 days in public beta, but could use a bit of a push to other communities also, our member count is only at ~ 290 so far
@Mr_Green nah, we just like the site
ohh k
13:12
in The DMZ, 35 mins ago, by TildalWave
Half of the stuff I read on Twitter today seem like I just had a minor cerebrovascular accident :|
there's my problem with "thinking straight"... others seem to not mind I have problems with it :)))
I will try to promote this site everywhere possible
3
@Mr_Green @RoryAlsop can you please make this a sticky on the wall? It should be one of our top priorities... a mid-year resolution ;)
@TildalWave i can do it too btw :P
ya sure
@RhysW hehe cool, yes I forgot about it
13:15
I will promote it on FB
@Mr_Green hold that thought :)) :P
hehe
hey someone write a good article about this site
in any blog
that will attract many users I suppose
there's a few communities we could benefit from interacting with, will be worth engaging with them
might do that this evening actually
good
@TildalWave me too :L
13:20
@Mr_Green on my to-do list yes, but others should also try in other communities... I'll try to get to folks of a few space centres of the central and eastern Europe, and there's quite a lot of interest in my own tiny country, we've always had people look to the stars... mathematicians, engineers,... and there's a research institute at the department of physics at our largest Uni
and I personally know our only astronaut so far... he's yet to go to space, but should be within the next two years IIRC
@TildalWave thats pretty cool,
@RhysW yeah, but our numbers are small... but maybe they can push this idea forward also
getting attention would be as simple as getting the site to fund a launch, then let the media pick it up and take it from there
hmmm.... maybe I could blow on Sunita Williams' consciousness also :) She's in part of Slovene roots also and frequently comes here to give speaches and such, would be cool if I could get her to promote our cause, even if the chances of that might be rather remote. :O
@RhysW hehehe yes I support this idea :)
... also Ronald M. Sega, but he's retired and I don't remember him ever coming to my country (or maybe he does, but in private capacity only) :|
just thinking "out loud" here, ignore me LOL
@TildalWave dont worry, i am :P
13:34
@RhysW just perks of a tiny country... you eventually bump into everyone :))
@TildalWave which country would that be if you dont mind my asking?
@RhysW Slovenia... about 2M people, central Europe,... ;)
so with the population of ... hmmm... Croydon? :)))
joking... tho not that far off
@RhysW you're still trying to pinpoint it on the world map? :))
@TildalWave no i was working, sorry :P
@RhysW ever been to these parts of the woods?
@TildalWave no cant say i have! Im a picky eater so i stick to places i can get my types of food :P
im a pretty boring person :P
14:09
I guess the closest I've ever been to Slovenia was the Zurich airport.
Though I'd love to go to Venice.
14:21
@RhysW LOL you really think the food can get any worse? I've had my share of various dishes whenever in Blighty... the best thing I ate was a sandwich at the French named chain :P
@Donald.McLean avoid Venice in summer ;) (hint: the smell from the channels and all the pigeon poop... not joking)
and it's ridiculously expensive... Europe is expensive as it is for a US tourist, there... dunno, an espresso for 5 euros anyone? :)
If I'd to select a date for a trip to Venice, it'd probably be either around May or September... May might be better, less chance of rain though
I'll keep that in mind since our kids are grown and we aren't necessarily tied to any particular schedule for travel.
14:38
@Donald.McLean yup that's best... and if you'll go there remember, there's other places to see quite close to Venice (in relative terms, but since you'd be there...) ;)
maps.google.com says that it's a 2h20m drive from Venice to Ljubljana, Slovenia.
We need a user named hal.
14:55
@TildalWave what can i say, im set in my ways and have no intentions to change them now :P
@RhysW You mean you want you bacon, beans, eggs and toast for breakfast, and you'll fight for your right to get them each and every morning, so help you God? :))
@TildalWave i dont eat breakfast, but yeah pretty much :P
anyone tries to take away my bacon sandwich so help me god ill smite them :P
@RhysW Yup, you are British! :)
@TildalWave through and through :P
i would be happy in america, the food there is similar enough!
@RhysW Except that it's much easier to get good Indian food in Britain.
15:11
@Donald.McLean my indian coworker strongly disagrees, runs british-indian food into the ground regularly :P
@RhysW Have they ever tried to get good Indian food in the US?
@Donald.McLean not that i know of
is it deep fried?
Just saying that, while it can be found in the US, it's fairly uncommon. When it comes to ethnic food, most people here are hung up on the big three - Italian, Chinese, and Mexican.
im a fan of burgers, chips and chicken :P
those are my big three!
@Donald.McLean That's called Indian, not really Indian
15:18
@RhysW I'm assuming you mean the things that we can "fries" here in the US.
@Donald.McLean yeah chips to you i guess is crisps to me :P chips to me is fries to you xD
Are you a thin or thick chip fan?
thin
and greasy
my arteries say no but my stomach says yes
@RhysW ROFLMAO
@TildalWave it sounded more racist that i was aiming for, so i take that back :L
15:22
@RhysW It can't be racist, if it's same races (probably all anyway?) on both sides :P You probably mean xenophobic?
@RhysW My favorite thin chips (fries) here in the US can be found at 5 Guys, which is a hamburger place (excellent burgers btw). They're thin, whole potato models - and I think that leaving the skins on makes them extra tasty.
@Donald.McLean you had me agreeing all the way up to leaving the skins on!
@Donald.McLean isn't that called potato wedges?
@TildalWave this! in the UK atleast anyway
look at us talking of small potatoes :)
15:26
yeah, we better be careful before we are swarmed by irish
@TildalWave No. Potato wedges are much larger. Thin fries have a cross section of aprox 25sq mm.
@Donald.McLean but if it has the skin on them still they are just wedges of cooked potato!
Only the outside fries have the skins.
pass :P
i could never be an astronaut, takeaway would take too long
For actual wedges, you have to go to someplace like KFC.
15:28
the chicken you can get from KFC is out of this world (excuse the space related pun)
Well, it is good. I'm not sure I would go so far as "out of this world".
im a fan of chicken
I wonder what Russians would think of this conversation, wasting perfectly good potatoes on frying them instead of distilling them to something you could fuel your rockets with
@TildalWave why would russians fuel rockets with vodka?
@RhysW I said they could, not that they would :P
15:33
vodka wasn't developed as a fuel, it was developed as an antifreeze, no?
huh, myth
@ManishEarth wasn't it "invented" by Poles?
@ManishEarth ahhh its manish D:
I think it's just that the Russians found it useful as antifreeze. Because in Soviet Russia, normal antifreeze freezes itself.
@RhysW I was lurking the whole time :P
Vodka (, ) is a distilled beverage composed primarily of water and ethanol, sometimes with traces of impurities and flavorings. Vodka is made by the distillation of fermented substances such as grains, potatoes, or sometimes fruits or sugar. Traditionally prepared vodkas had an alcoholic content of 40% by volume. Today, the standard Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, Latvian and Lithuanian vodkas are 40% alcohol by volume (ABV) or 80 proof. The European Union has established a minimum of 37.5% ABV for any "European vodka" to be named as such. For homemade vodkas and distilled beverages referr...
15:35
@ManishEarth did you atleast bring @CrazyBuddy with you? :P
I like the minimum alcohol requirement by EU :)
@RhysW Yeah... I always shadow him :P
(You guys should learn more about h-bar people) ;-)
@CrazyBuddy ive already pegged you as his minion
:P
> Vodka bottling machine, Shatskaya Vodka (Shatsk, Russia)
I ROFLed
@RhysW What..? Minion?? That's not classified well enough..! o_O
15:38
@CrazyBuddy you do his bidding?
@CrazyBuddy youre helping him take over the world
@RhysW Yeah... We're bringing WWIII ;-)
@CrazyBuddy id rather you didnt
the easiest way to take over the world is through peace :P
Once I appear, he'll tunnel somewhere else...
@CrazyBuddy quantumly?
whatever best suites him..??!!!
15:42
haha, im sure @ManishEarth wouldn't leave now the three of us are all in one place :P
Great, I've got a downvote with no explanation ... I really hate that! Grrrrr! :(
@RhysW busy
@TildalWave ? where abouts

the easiest way to take over the world is through peace :P
@ManishEarth ahh, ill let you off this one time, as i like to know about your graphene stuff when you finally get round to it :P

A: Laser propulsion possible?

TildalWaveI'm going to borrow an analogy from Baron Münchhausen (see Fig. 1) later on to illustrate the Newton's three laws of motion that are in effect with such a system you're proposing and why it wouldn't be possible to create a propulsive force, if the lasers and the solar sail are a part of the same ...

@TildalWave adds a downvote
It created some stir ... mine and @PearsonArtPhoto's answer
@ManishEarth LOL
@TildalWave but, comment one could have been that person, he explains why he thinks your wrong so it seems logical
@RhysW doubt it, because that comment is old and I've addressed the point he's making further with my edit
@TildalWave ah ok, i was viewing it in a timeless frame
15:47
@RhysW Well the problem with that question is first and foremost one of basic physics, and perhaps someone thought I'm a bit condescending with the first part of my answer... but I later explain that was never my intention, just wanted to point out obvious misunderstanding of mechanics with the same obvious example
@TildalWave no worries, in one of my answers i first explained how space travel worked rather than assuming everyone instinctively knew
it could have been seen as condescending but thankfully wasnt
@RhysW Yup that's hazards of a young website ... you don't know at what level questions are asked, if they themselves don't show at least some level of understanding. I wish more people actually did follow-ups on comments and additional questions, but we certainly won't have those all the time, and we will have hit and run questions :(
hit and run questions drive me crazy
especially the ones who say thanks on an answer but dont accept it
@PearsonArtPhoto this is fantastic
15:54
@PearsonArtPhoto hehe... had to google what's Kerbal tho, I'm... old! :P
@PearsonArtPhoto yeah who doesnt though!
Kerbal Space Program (commonly abbreviated to KSP) is a sandbox-style space flight simulator with gameplay elements currently in development for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The first public alpha was released on June 24, 2011 and updates have been continually released since. KSP has support for mods, all of which are hosted on an official modding website. It can be purchased through the official KSP Store or, since March 20, 2013, through Steam. Gameplay The game places the player in control of a nascent space program operated by Kerbals, a race of small green humanoids, who have co...
Any good?
@TildalWave its addictive
@TildalWave Forgive me for sucking up your free time for the next 2 weeks or so.
Maybe longer. It's actually quite a decent program, pretty realistic, for the most part.
@PearsonArtPhoto and updated frequently
and well modded from what i hear
15:56
I should look for updates.
I've heard the mods make it a much better program actually.
@PearsonArtPhoto I don't have any, so no harm done :P I'm only a bit more active here today because of the heat stroke, being bitten by an ant on my left index finger impairing my typing abilities, and general laziness :P
@TildalWave its monday, who isnt being lazy? :L
@PearsonArtPhoto some of them fit very well into the whole feel of the game
@RhysW Right! hears inner voice say: gotta survive till Friday son, take it easy!
mines more of the ilk that its never impacted my ability to work or deliver good work on time, so im given whatever leeway i want
@PearsonArtPhoto OK so it's kinda like flight simulator, but adopted to space?
15:59
@TildalWave and more gamified
I mean The Flight Simulator (the one by MS)
@RhysW You can install laser cannons on your spaceships?
@TildalWave no, but hes adding a sort of campaign mode, where you have a budget and missions ect
weaponry and other species will never be added, quote from the original dev
@RhysW Gotcha ;)
Will add it to the shopping list then
@TildalWave the downward spiral begins
i hope you like late nights
not sure why I bought me a shiny new graphics card last xmas if I'm never gonna use it LOL
16:02
i suggest following a few intro vids on youtube first, the learning curve initially is quite high
@RhysW as per my profile, I'm a night owl ;)
@RhysW I'll always have support in The Pod Bay :)
true, though i find visual cues more useful, but thats just me
17 minutes to go, almost free
i think we should have a scheduled room event for our 1 month-iversary, discuss how we think we're doing, what questions we think really stand out from the crowd etc.
anyone have anything to input on this idea?
16:20
@RhysW As a room owner, can you create room events? I'd "subscribe" to this one ;)
@TildalWave i can create room events yeah, but not just doing them on a whim or itll annoy everyone :P
but i think a 1 month self review could be beneficial to help define our boundaries
@RhysW Also, you might want to answer a question or two, voters seem to like my "cake is not a lie" sentiment in that answer and I've surpassed you in rep points :P
@TildalWave damn you caught me :P i didnt really have much to say on the recent questions though and id rather not give a sub par answer just for the sake of rep
when does the mod electing happen? that cant be far off can it?
No election will happen, mods are chosen at this point in time, not elected.
It should happen in the next week or two.
@PearsonArtPhoto ah my mistake, im unfamilar with such an early stage
16:31
Elections only happen for sites that have graduated.
mental note made,
thanks

You think it would work here?
17:03
@PearsonArtPhoto I think it was silly that it was closed in the first place.
Yeah, but I bet it'll have a better answer here anyways.
There have been several SFF questions in that realm which received answers...
Well, then get somebody to move it.
Done:-)

I might just give Pearson's question a try

Q: Did the Viking landers detect life on Mars?

PearsonArtPhotoThe two Viking landers had an experiment on board where they attempted to find life on the planet. The initial results said yes, there was life, but later there were questions raised about the results. What is the final verdict on the matter?

Rrrooorrryyy!!!
answered 59 seconds ago
Shoot.
@PearsonArtPhoto you have a small typo in your answer: It used 200 kg of power ... according to that article you link to, that should read "explosive charge" or maybe "powder" ;)
I also don't quite get the That would scale to about 14400 kg of powder, or about 16 tons of powder :| (maybe I'm slow... it is hot here, to my excuse :P)
18:36
@Undo woops - I just got home, the kids were in the bath, I saw this question - sorry
@Rory Ehh, whatever. You deserve it.
@Undo pfffffft :-)
@Rory I have an answer with an animated thingy!
1
A: Do any (LEO) satellites move east-to-west?

UndoThe correct term for this type of orbit is retrograde. Here's a shiny animated thing showing the orbit: Due to the difficulty to achieve such an orbit, it is rarely used. Most commonly, artificial satellites using this orbit are commercial earth-observing satellites. Some satellites which use...

My very first in my entire SE career!
@Undo ooooh - shiny!
and upvoted
I might have to use animated things in all my answers. Two upvotes and an accept in two minutes. Such as a waffle flipper on mSO.
19:10
@TildalWave Should have read powder. Ooops... Fixed.
It is rarely used in comparison to 'normal' orbits, right? — Undo 17 mins ago
@Undo That would then be rarer, as in less frequent than. Everything less frequent than even a lot is rarer, but not necessarily rare. But that's my take on it, and by far not an official explanation LOL.
I'm working on a better answer to that question.
19:38
I know I've seen some really cool plots on # of objects vs inclination somewhere, but I can't find any... Oh well.
Aren't retrograde orbits fairly rare, except for GPS satellites?
Sun-Sync are pretty common, which are technically retrograde.
Other than that, they are rare. I didn't know GPS satellites were retrograde...
GPS==55 inclination.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. The system provides critical capabilities to military, civil and commercial users around the world. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver. The GPS project was developed in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous navigation systems, integrating ideas from s...
@PearsonArtPhoto My mistake. Perhaps I was thinking of launch detection satellites. Some system that I discussed at some point in my life had retrograde orbits.
I could believe that.
And now we have the #3 most popular question on SE at the moment. Still going up I believe. Hmmm.
19:59
@PearsonArtPhoto Reptrain ahoy!! :-)
@PearsonArtPhoto number #2 now :-)

Rovers was up there for a few days.
oh i see
i was doign it by votes, not on that list
there was that inventor who tried to get a giant cannon to launch things into space
i wonder if thats what hes asking about
20:07
We should refer them here:-)
20:17
why is RhysW's name italicized
oh, room owner maybe?
test
hm
ah
.username.owner {
font-style: italic;
}
20:51
@JohnB because he's a cool guy?
that too :)
I checked out the WIkipedia page on the Oberth manoeuvre - but got to that wonderful phrase - Thus it can be readily seen...
and had to stop
@JohnB i didnt even notice the italics :L
@RhysW I've never noticed for any room owner before, but it certainly makes you look special
@JohnB well i certainly talk alot, which is just aswell because thats my only qualification :P
21:00
@TRiG de ja vu :P
@Manishearth after tildal convinced us he was male i hope to god your comment about trimming it was related to his application — RhysW 9 mins ago
@RhysW this made me ROFL violently :) didn't realize it before LOL
@TildalWave i saw it and couldnt resist, ill remove it if its too vulgar :P
@RhysW It's only implied... one has to be of legal age to understand it in that context, right? :)
@TildalWave most likely :P
21:03
@TRiG I prefer your hat tho... still :)
@TildalWave It's a combination of a silly fisherman's hat I like to wear and a paper crown from a Christmas cracker.
@TRiG thats genius i love it alot
;)
@TRiG I know, you've mentioned it before in The DMZ :P I still like it tho,... alot :))
@TildalWave The DMZ. Another part of SE where I rarely venture (though I do happen to be there right now).

we now have the same xkcd comic starred twice, and next to eachother xD
21:42
@TRiG still, it's where I first got to know your hat :) hats are important in IT Security ;)

LOL, the same comic is starred twice. I guess we really liked it:-)
