Nope, no repcap today. :(

1 hour later…
02:34
so who can tell me why my feed doesn't work
@manishearth any idea?
I call upon your wisdom
long hair his hilarious in space
03:10
@JohnB Whaddya need done?
@ManishEarth welllll I tried adding an RSS message feed
but I haven't seen anything pop up since the initial bot barfing up things
We have lots of activity, I'll add a ticker
I think we have tickers
but I was trying to add APOD as messages
03:11
they should work O.o
no activity since this:

Which moon is this?

maybe the bot doesn't like the RSS, got some weird dates going on there
Got classes soon, I'll take a look later
see ya!

Hi, I would like to listen to your opinion on my last comment on my question: space.stackexchange.com/questions/196/what-will-replace-the-iss
Why would you delete a question just to ask a very similar question? Wouldn't it be better to just edit the existing question? Or am I missing something?
If I edit question, answer will be somehow incorrect..
14:33
@trapo I wouldn't delete it. If it gets closed, it's good to have it around as an example of questions that are off-topic
try not to take it personally!
I think a better question would be "How can we build a next generation space station without the help of the Space Shuttle?"
you can leave the question body as is
then all answers will still be relevant
And I've repcapped yet again... It's happening earlier every day...
excellent :)
thoughts on the above, @PearsonArtPhoto?
It's killing me just being 27 reputation from 1K, but...
wow, 308 rep on the first day
that might be the site record for quite a while
14:48
@ernestopheles hit that on day 2, which is much harder BTW than hitting it on day 1...
Day 1 gives a 100 point bonus pretty easily, if you have 200 reputation on another site.
ohhh. duh.
well then, that doesn't count :P
247 is still probably the record
oh nm, I see what you were saying, ernestopheles has it
320 on day 2 from Ernestopheles, I guess that was 8 accepted answers.
I am not awake yet, ignore me
@PearsonArtPhoto im sure you are above 1k already, i dont think my votes have been taken into consideration yet
@Rhysw votes take effect immediately.
14:53
@RhysW Rep capped, only accept votes will push him up
@JohnB ahh, might be that then
@Undo i was under the impression the person recieving the vote didnt actually get told about it in their rep until the vote 'locks in' e.g cannot be reversed without edit
@Rhys Nope. Immediate. Try noting a persons rep, voting, then visiting their profile.
@Pearson Let's see if you answered any of my questions that could get you a couple accepts...
Hes answerd one of mine, but i havent accepted yet, was hoping to get a few other points of view
@PearsonArtPhoto should we put together a "Who are our experts?" meta-post?
And now I'm at 1K...
14:56
> The biggest challenge facing this particular site will be gaining some semblance of expertise.
@JohnB what would it achieve?
was thinking a community wiki post of users who work in the field or grad students.
@Pearson How's that feel?
Nice, I have access to the mod tools.
14:57
@JohnB How would it help though?
if we explicitly say "These are our experts, we deserve to be a site because they give us credibility"
Experts are made evident in their answers
we deserve to be a site because of our answers, not because of who visits us
@Pearson How about some screenshots for the rest of us? I did push you over, after all....
heh, not according to SE
14:58
@RhysW SE wants sites that attact experts. Expert questions attract other experts
@JohnB but still, listing experts doesnt help, what verifies that?
i could tell you im an expert, im far from it but how would you know?
i agree we need experts,
i just dont think we need a list of them
Your question and answer history would be the verification I suppose. I just really want this site to leave private beta, thought it might help give it a push :)
@JohnB It probably wouldn't help as much as it hurts, just my opinion.
nah, its basically an unverified list of names, doesnt prove anything, what we need for that are expert level questions and answers. Doesnt matter if we have their name in a list if they arent asking or answering
okey dokey
15:01
It's good you're thinking, though.
@Undo defiantely agree here. I dont mean to shoot you down
It takes a lot more than that to hurt my feelings :)
Thats good then, some people are quite sensitive, didnt want to think i was curb stomping your enthusiasm
Now I want access to the mod tools :(
....but I may have made plans to get a tub of ice cream and cry myself to sleep tonight while listening to Everybody Hurts
15:03
@Undo answer my questions and you can earn some rep :P
@Rhys Hmm.. Just a minute...
Pearson already answered them! Grrr...
@Undo im still looking for alternate possibilities on my unaccepted one though
I'll look into that. Already at 657, only need, uh, 343 today to get to tools. How likely is that?
@RhysW you are a man of science, right?
@JohnB sort of
@Undo thats higher than the cap isnt it?
15:08
@RhysW Accepts are cap-immune :)
So I would need to repcap and get 10 accepts. Not looking good.
@Undo xD how much do you know? :P
@JohnB i do software dev stuff as a job but i also do open university course in my down time on planetary sciences
well, I'm trying to improve the markup on a chemistry equation
@RhysW I know plenty about the SE network, but space isn't exactly my specialty. I'm doing something right, though, as I'm usually either #4 or #5 in the rep list.
@JohnB Wow. I think we need some mathjax.
6
Q: Writing equations (Mathjax and alternatives)

AlanSEHow important does everyone feel that equations are here? Other communities like physics and math uses MathJax, which will render equations typed in LaTeX. That has to be added to the site code, and I admit I do not know how this is done. As a PSA, I use the quicklatex site when the MathJax is...

15:12
forgot an arrow in there
and somehow deleted my fraction
with the lack of Mathjax, we should put the equations in the img attribute if they use an image
better for people with screen readers :)
@Undo how much do you know about impact testing on rockets? :P about to ask a question
Bounties also are, but I don't see that happening anytime soon...
@RhysW About as much that it shouldn't blow up if you kick it.
@PearsonArtPhoto question for you pearson, you seem to know your stuff, got a question about the impact of rocks with rockets, but no tags seem to fit what i want, i added safety and impact to it as new tags, is there something obvious i am missing?
@RhysW Sounds good to me...
15:27
oops safety already exists, just impact is a new one, not sure if one already exists that serves a similar purpose, though synonyms are always good i guess if its not immediately evident
Go ahead and create [impact].
@JohnB i gave it a pretty crummy excerpt, im not brilliant at that bit, but it explains basically what it should be used for
I am really bad at them, a bunch got rejected :D
@JohnB i think only pearson can review things currently anyway xD
15:31
well, and the comms team :)
they've been doing all the approving thus yet
@JohnB i didnt even know we had one
Robert Cartaino keeps a very close watch on private betas
he's the top suggested edit reviewer for the site so far
I look forward to this site being out of beta
private beta i mean
hmmm, i want to ask a question related to how we can increase the speed of communication to unmanned vehicles as they reach very large distances, e.g delays to instructions sent to voyager i imagine range into the hours. When fast response is needed i imagine that the further something gets the harder it is to look after it as the commuication time increases. But im not sure how to word the question, i might have to think about this one a bit more
15:51
@RhysW Faster than the speed of light? That doesn't seem like it would be on topic here...
@PearsonArtPhoto i thought our speed was close to but not actually the speed of light?
Radio waves= light speed.
perhaps was mistaken then.
They really are just a type of light.
aside from quantum entangled particle communication i doubt there is much we can do to increase speed
15:52
And there's considerable debate as to how well that would work.
very true, i will leave this question on my shelf until further discoveries are made then
perhaps ill whip it out if any communications breakthroughs are made
threw a few more tag descriptions in there, seems a few of them dont have any

1 hour later…
17:23
Interesting question that popped up. I'll have to work on giving it an answer, if one isn't given anytime soon...
17:35
*cough* reputation hog *cough*
;D I keeed I keed

Q: Do Beta sites have reduced resources on the Stack network?

geoffcI have participated on many Stack sites, and several beta sites, and this is the first time, things seem much slower. I noticed that some of the common stuff that normally updates faster on production sites seems slower. Like Gravatars initially (perhaps those are just trickling in, as they see...

Hmm...
17:48
@JohnB I might be a hog, but I do give others a chance when I've reached the cap...
I'm just messing with you :)
@PearsonArtPhoto By then, you're already having fun in the mod tools :p
I haven't done much with them. This is the first time I've ever got to the level to use the mod tools in a private beta...
I'm hoping to get there by Sunday.
Probably the best answer I've written so far here:
1
A: Alternatives to centripetal force and constant acceleration to simulate Earth-like gravity

UndoWikipedia has a good page on the subject of artificial gravity, highlighting many (very interesting) possibilities. Rotation Linear acceleration Mass Magnetism Gravity generator/gravitomagnetism Buoyancy Rotation is exactly what you would expect. The spacecraft is a big rota...

18:31
The entire first chapter of Stranger In A Strange Land is closely related to this very question:
2
Q: Is there research for the optimal small crew size for a long space voyage?

James JenkinsThere are many factors in planning a long space voyage. The human interaction being one of them. Group dynamics have been studied in detail for naval and other military applications, the stations on Antarctica have also contributed to the body of knowledge. As seen with Biosphere 2 the answers...

19:10
@Donald.McLean would you mind typing it up and posting it as an answer?
:P
or I'm sure you can find a PDF pretty easily
@JohnB hahahaha
What's good, @Rory!
@JohnB Everything today - it is unseasonably warm and sunny here in Scotland, and the weekend has arrived...and I'm sat indoors on various Stack Exchange sites :-)
yeah, very warm here too x_x (Northeast US)
I though this site was looking for good, professional answers backed by real science, not the ramblings of a fiction author, no matter how respected he might be.
19:16
alright, good point. Save it for after we launch ;)
@JohnB It was so kind of Mother Nature to provide such a large sauna so as to open all of our pores.
I know I don't have any reputation to gain from it, but I don't think I can help but answer one of these questions...
@Donald.McLean I was comfortable all day until the building started to heat up, I normally don't touch the thermostat in fear of getting yelled at but temptation is growing..
@JohnB I'm at work, but so far my office hasn't been too bad. It helps that my office mate isn't here and I can use his fan.
ahhh, lucky :)
19:21
@PearsonArtPhoto this is another reason you are getting my vote for mod :-)
19:45
If anyone was under the impression that I'm not an idiot, I'd like you to reconsider
@JohnB what have you just done?
just realized I had all my air conditioning register vents blocked, which may or may not have been the reason it's so hot in my office
@JohnB hahahahaha
like not even blocked how you turn the little lever, I had them 100% blocked with packing tape
because in the winter it gets too hot in here so I blocked them off
20:12
@JohnB These things happen.
well, it is much cooler in here now :). These things happen most often to me at a fault of my own
Sometimes the universe likes to remind us that we are not yet infallible. That's one of the challenging parts of being a software developer.
Oh yeah, going through that today. Broke lots of things trying to add a new feature :)
I'm just grateful to have actual testers on this project.
anything you can tell us about?
20:23
@RoryAlsop You and Pearson get my vote.
@JohnB Absolutely. I work for an organization that basks in the light and welcomes publicity with glee: stsci.edu
coool
The system I'm working on is used to help manage to Hubble data archive.
Is the Hubble data archive public?
Yes, except those parts that have not yet been released, which usually happens within a year.
20:30
@JohnB Sounds like something you could ask on Astronomy if it ever makes it.
@Donald.McLean So everything has been released, except what hasn't? :)
And of course the data that confirms aliens exist, that's probably locked away
@JohnB Might be of help: archive.stsci.edu/hst

2 hours later…
22:14
Repcapped again!
@Undo thanks!
for...
Generally 3 pro-tems are enabled :-)
for your vote
Oh, yes.
I'm hoping to be one too. What do you think my chances are?
@Undo excellent
22:27
Seriously?
@RoryAlsop What is your reasoning?
At beta, a site needs pro-tems who are enthusiastic about the site, keen to put in the effort to help it grow, prepared to answer questions and moderate, edit and comment and generally be a strong participant - as well as wanting to be a pro-tem
3
I know that's you, but not sure it's me. I guess I fit all those.
PTs are chosen after public beta hits, right?
@RoryAlsop Anyway, it would be a blast to work alongside both you and Pearson moderating here.
Just curious, what's your time zone?
It could be anyone, really - typically the SE team ask likely suspects from the top users population who have nominated, but it doesn't have to be.
I'm UK mostly, but will be UTC+5 next week
22:34
Great! UTC-7 here.
@Undo is that west coast USA?
@RoryAlsop One TZ East of West Coast.
Mountain Time.
nice - I don't get over there often enough. Maybe late this year
Vegas and New York are my main work locations, with the odd one in SF or Cleveland
well - main ones outside UK
Must travel a lot?
Erghh.. Within 5 rep of 750 and repcapped... :(
@Undo trying to cut back, but yes, for a while I had gold cards with a few airlines
22:38
@RoryAlsop Wouldn't that be perfect for moderation? My grasp of TZs is limited, but we'd generally have someone on all the time, right?
You know, assuming I was elected along with you and Pearson, I would be the only one without previous experience.
@Undo we can always be pinged if something's going awry
@Hiroto Who can?
And don't worry about prior experience; learning on the job is fun
Oh, for advice from other network mods?
we = mods
22:43
As in, 'does this look like a voting ring'?
@Hiroto You're the new Freelancing mod, right?
Mhm
And there is <looks around furtively> the Teacher's Lounge..... (shhh)
The Teacher's Lounge is publicly known. the content, I should hope, is not :p
@RoryAlsop @Hiroto What's it like learning on the job - there are a lot of buttons to press, right?
@Undo Avoid thoe buttons outlined in RED
22:47
@Undo there are lots of buttons, and all of them blow something up somewhere
oh yes, sorry -
But yes, it's more janitorial than anything. Just with explosions.
@RoryAlsop A glorified janitor with big red buttons?
That makes things go boom?
@RoryAlsop ooh, ooh, can we tell him about the AI?
22:48
@Hiroto That explains a lot...
Janitorial AI.
We call it the Stack Overlord
boom and fire
!
@RoryAlsop you're from Edinburgh?
@Hiroto Not originally, but have lived here most of the time since about '89
Some time in Germany, Denmark and Australia, but not long term jobs
What's the atmosphere like in TL?
22:52
I'm from newcastle, just south of you. Scotland is windy.
@Hiroto Right now - Scotland is not windy. But I was born in the far north, where it is always windy!
@RoryAlsop just how much about TL are we allowed to mention?
@Hiroto Thinking about taking the band down to Newcastle soon. We are playing InFest in Bradford next month, and we supported a Newcastle band this month in Edinburgh (Tooms) but never played the Toon
@Hiroto I would think you could say what happens there - not specifics, of course.
@Hiroto anything except the content :-)
22:53
@Undo it's all fun and games until someone brings a sock puppet and beats it to death with a shovel and a pitchfork
There.
nothing about y'know, Fight Club or the sock rings
heh
Lol
or the Unicorn parade
Sshhh!!
What happens if you suspend Community?
Does it automatically unsuspend itself?
22:54
The negative user ID users are special cases
I had figured you were from Newcastle from your accent on @Aarthi's hangout - still don't know why my mic wouldn't work with hangout
Oh - Hiroto! I saw you in the Aarthicast!
Heh, the mask was great
Yep - very great!
@Hiroto I had to show Aarthi - she had only ever seen my avatar
22:55
Fun
How about 'This question appears to be off topic because it is about Klingons.' — Undo 2 days ago
Right - beer time. Later folks!
@Hiroto lol
bye! Got to go now.
Just for the fun of it, if you want to see the types of things that mods grip about, check out the following page.

Q: How can we improve the mod tools?

LauraYou may have noticed that we have a bit of a backlog for bugs and feature requests related to moderator tools. Our moderators do a lot of work to keep our sites running smoothly, and we recognize that sometimes the tools get in the way - through inefficiencies or bugs we aren't aware of or have...

23:54
@PearsonArtPhoto Neat! There's even screenshots!
