I need a synonym for "pain" that starts with an m-. (Ideally with a mu-, but I know I'm pushing my luck as is with just the m alone.)
Anything roughly along the lines of suffering, torment, ache, dolor, longing, etc.
Translating Mandelstam again, before you wonder. @Cerberus @Robusto.

misery?

Oh that's a brilliant one.
Well done. Chapeau.
I need an alliteration for music and muse, and misery matches not just the M but also the S.

:-)
malaise?

Modern Library's 100 Best Novels is a list of the best English-language novels published in the 20th century, as selected by Modern Library from among 400 novels published by Random House, which owns Modern Library. The purpose of the list was to "to bring the Modern Library to public attention" and stimulate sales of its books. == Editors' list == In early 1998, the Modern Library polled its editorial board to find the best 100 novels. The board consisted of Daniel J. Boorstin, A. S. Byatt, Christopher Cerf, Shelby Foote, Vartan Gregorian, Edmund Morris, John Richardson, Arthur Schlesinger Jr...
The 100 Books of the Century (French: Les cent livres du siècle) is a list of the one hundred best books of the 20th century, according to a poll conducted in the spring of 1999 by the French retailer Fnac and the Paris newspaper Le Monde. Starting from a preliminary list of 200 titles created by bookshops and journalists, 17,000 French voters responded to the question, "Which books have remained in your memory?" (Quels livres sont restés dans votre mémoire ?).The list of acclaimed titles mixes great novels with poetry and theatre, as well as the Asterix comic book. The list includes many French...

Could you please help me with these audio files? Whenever you see a series of underscores, it means that I probably have no idea what the speaker is saying there and the words that are spelled with all capital letters are something that I'm just not exactly sure of ("can't" vs. "couldn't", "and" vs. "in" and things like that).

1. https://clyp.it/pnoofgzr to prefer any other point to the one IT'S at
2. https://clyp.it/d5c1nl1a grosser (how do you understand that?)
3. https://clyp.it/3p1wkztl Spinoza was the consummate rationalist (what exactly does she mean by "consummate"?)

@Malavika There are many books designed for preparing for TOEFL. I have bought one and done its exercise, but don't really take the exam finally because I change my mind of application in USA.

7:44 PM
Just remember not to add too much olive oil while preparing TOEFL.

8:03 PM
@Malavika Obviously I'm a nobody but the piece of advice I would give someone is not to aim for the TOEFL. If you see English as a tool, a means of communication, rather than something to learn to pass exams, you'd be reaching for higher levels than these tests require, and then the bizarre vocabulary that they need would be a matter of a few weeks to master
We've got this saying in Persian, "if you aim for 100, you get the 90."
Which can be interpreted both w Why is there a huge space below my messages, it's SO distracting

Sometimes I will check what scores someone has favorited on MuseScore, and it's like they're obsessed with just one single song.
And, like, for all kinds of instrumentations, so it's not like they're researching, looking for the best one for a particular instrument or something.
And invariably, half the arrangements are garbage (well, it's MuseScore, duh, but sitll). They don't pick one that they like the most. They pick all of them.
Most don't even get the harmony right. Or the melody. Or both. Or don't know that getting louder and softer is a thing possible with music.
Like, most of those arrangements in the screenshot above aren't even any good.
Well, one is, but that one's mine, so it doesn't count. I'm trying to make a point here.
@skullpetrol malaise is too French. And too visceral.
Of course misery is also French.
But misery is good.
I went with misery.
Thanks a bunch.
