@Mitch You probably have heard many more modal pieces than you know. Lots of modern popular music uses modes, as does jazz etc.
13:20
This guy is polluting our site with stupid questions.
13:41
What do you call someone who asks lots of questions about what to call people in a thinly veiled attempt to blame others for ones own shortcomings?" — Mitch 20 secs ago
That about sums it up.
We should let it be known that we are not his diatribe monkeys.
Close all his questions then.
All of them.
The problem is, on their own the questions seem no worse than any of the others we get here. It is only in the aggregate that the pattern emerges.
Right, but all of those SWRs should be closed.
without malice, without exception, without hesitation
13:54
Well, you're a mod. I'm just a user.
You have a vote.
Several.
yes, it should be community lead
What close reason works for this case? Seriously, I can't find one that exactly fits.
primarily opinion based?
How about, check a thesaurus.
13:55
or that
How about "improving your vocabulary is not on-topic".
Ask in chat.
Let's make a SWR room.
Shall we?
...
Oh dear. I seem to be on a tear.
steps away from the mod console
@KitFox I think it's more about "facilitating the venting of your spleen is not on-topic" . . .
I meant as a general rule about SWRs.
Facilitating the venting of one's spleen is not on-topic.
But yes, that applies here in this instance, yes.
I think I should take a shower and brew some tea.
I got a new one today.
An oolong.
I just like to say it. Oolong. Ooooolong. Ooooooooolong.
Oolong.
I wonder if that's "five dragons."
!!define oolong
14:00
@KitFox oolong A partially fermented tea which combines the characteristics of green tea and black tea.
Oh, black dragon. Actually, I knew that.

Q: What do you call someone who asks lots of questions about what to call people in a thinly veiled attempt to blame others for ones own shortcomings?

user76935One word. Someone who asks a lot of questions in order to expand his vocabulary related to certain patterns of human behaviour, especially those of a malicious nature.

There he goes again.
It's clear he's trolling. I nominate him for an IP ban.
I wouldn't be surprised if he has a sock puppet in this very chat.
(dramatic music)
How do I write that?
Dun dun dun.
14:18
@Rob I want to make a Raspberry Pi Linux box and use it to grep EC lyrics.
I think this is a good use of my time.
grep 'lipstick' 'powder' returns 'girls talk' and 'you little fool'
charlatain charlatan
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I wonder if you can get the complete lyrics in a text file, or at least XML.
14:33
@Robusto maybe they can be pulled from elviscostello.info.
Dunno. I suppose you could just download the English language.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I saw him on his Blood & Chocolate tour, in which he debuted the Spectacular Spinning Songbook. I didn't get a chance to spin the wheel, however.
@Robusto !_! I'll have to look that up.

I could do without the comma after opinions.
OMG, OMG, the wedding part 2 has hit my Hulu.
That's just, like, your opinion, man
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I know nothing of this or its forebear.
@Robusto It's fine.

If by fine you mean superfluous, then OK.

Yes.

I'm speaking, of course, about "Tokyo Storm Warning" from EC's Blood & Chocolate album.

> "Seven Day Weekend" was written and recorded with Jimmy Cliff and The Attractions (!) for a film called Club Paradise, starring Peter O'Toole, Robin Williams, and Twiggy. Oh, the horror. I don't suppose either the film or the song will go down in history, but Jimmy is a great man, and I did get to play a lot of very loud guitar.
I remember going to Jimmy Cliff concert.
I don't remember leaving it.

15:04
Wow, someone's selling a copy of Blood & Chocolate for $2,399.
I wonder how it could ever be that special. Same songs, CD quality . . . what am I missing?
The only album worth that much money is the one i'm going to record. One track, a tribute to John Cage (a cover song)
maybe they were told to sell it but didn't want to so they complied in a facetious manner
Taking preorders now, for 50% off. That's just over $1,000, a bargain at twice the price!
@Robusto it comes with a sperm sample?
Feb 21 '11 at 14:12, by Robusto
When he heard about this piece, Igor Stravinsky said he hoped Mr. Cage would marshall his energies and produce a work of "major length" in the same style.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 I would ask for the price to be lowered in such a case.
15:08
@Robusto Whenever I see 'Stravinsky' I hear it in the voice of Terry Bozzio.
And I ponder the fluidity of Jeff Beck.
gtg, dr. appt. ltrz.
for real, though, i accept cash, checks, and large, high quality fossils of equal or greater value.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Whaaa?
Oh! The zappa skit?
Was that Bozzio doing the devil's voice?
15:27
@terdon HA! Yes!
:) Love that dialog.
:)
And all the beer?
Which is the one where he threatens to call the American embassy? And then explains that he'll call them a barrel of motherfuckers?
Were the cans this tall?
@terdon um, oh dear.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Yes!
15:34
@KitFox Yup :)
Wow. Just wow. I hadn't heard this one:

@KitFox That's what she said.

I was about to do the writing exercise I missed, so I can finally read everybody else's.

@Robusto Just made it to the beginning of chapter three, and I dig.

@Andy there are far worse reasons to hate oneself.

Hah, on King of America EC names that song "Don't Let Me Be Understood" . . .

Maybe it's related to howdy...
Hodor?
Game of Thrones reference.
@Cerberus ah, that's why the transcript couldn't find it.
@Robusto Ah I stopped watching after the second season.
Prostitutes use the hodor.
17:57
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Don't worry, Dutchmen also often confuse ou and au.
I only know the chador.
@Cerberus Hodor appeared on your watch.

So hot today, had to listen to some reaggae.
@Robusto felt like 25 Celsius
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 That could be any temp.
18:12
reggae is for summer no?
@JohanLarsson Your idea of hot? That's adorable.
@JohanLarsson It's alluz summah in Jamaica, mon.
you been there?
It gets to 40C here.
dunno what music is right for that
18:14
@JohanLarsson You call that hot? Wow!
Icehouse. Vanilla Ice. Kool and the Gang.
Ice ice baby? Wow, that takes me back a while.
@terdon ok relatively hot, first week we had summer here
also I live pretty close to the pole
@JohanLarsson I guessed as much :) I grew up in Greece, 25 is the upper range of chilly.
18:15
My prediction: @Rob is looking for some cool jazz.
I wish. I have a 2-hr. meeting in the offing. Meh.
Blarg. We are closing in 45.
Gonna go raid a Half Price Books even though I have 100+ pages left in Vineland, an e-book to read, and a copy of Infinite Jest.
Hmm, compromise then:
Jazzy reggae!
Yeah, I love that guy, great sound.
18:18
@terdon nice ty
@JohanLarsson whoa!
yeah it is ugly but fun
at least I enjoyed the first ten minutes of playing
Oh! It reminds me of Hypnotized.
But Hypnotized is probably newer.

@KitSox thanks, hun.

I can't think of anything better than a Friday night in chat with music links posted :)
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Thank you.
18:52
@Robusto have you read Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy?
I have not.
Okay.
It's almost entirely discussion.
@Robusto I found a typo at the end of 3.
BTW, I'm at the end of 3.
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Hmm . . . looks like Corportion instead of Corporation, yeah?
@Robusto That's the one!
Thank you for pointing that out.
19:02
You are quite welcome.
Ahh, it's quittin' time.

@JohanLarsson Poor you! It was about 23 here, also hot, especially inside or in the sun.
@Robusto You people have A/C and you go everywhere by car! Then heat doesn't matter!
@Cerberus I don't have A/C.
Oh...
Why not? I would love to have it.
I may have it installed myself...
Felt like about 25°C here today, too. I don’t mind, that’s perfect. Been sweating like a pig all day, though, ’cause I started out with two and a half hours at the gym (which doesn’t have A/C, either). Never quite managed to get my body temperature back down after that.
19:12
Oh, my.
You don't mind sweating?
I hate sweating. But I brought it on myself today—if I hadn’t gone to the gym this morning, I would only have been pleasantly hot all day, rather than boiling like an overzealous kettle.
I recognise this effect, but does it really last all day for you?
Not normally, no … but when it’s so hot, not only is the effect itself amplified, the continuing heat throughout the day means the effect doesn’t go away properly, either.
Did you try drinking lukewarm water?
Wasn’t till I got home after work and school and lay down on the bed for a while that I started cooling off.
@KitFox I did, but only because it had been in my bag for a few hours (yech).
Drinking hot tea tends to help, but I didn’t have any available.
19:27
@JanusBahsJacquet Hmm I've never had that last for more than an hour or so, I think.
Poor you!
Hot tea does not work for me, I never understood that supposed mechanism.
It makes your blood vessels constrict.
Essentially.
Me neither … but it works as well as, if not better than, ice cream or cold lemonade. Just doesn’t taste quite as yummy.
Cold stuff will have the opposite effect.
@Cerberus still had a sauna of course :)
@KitFox I don't know, it just makes me sweat. I notice, because I normally drink hot tea all day, but on very hot days I have to stop.
19:31
Waaah, sauna in this heat? I leave that to the Finns. I only do sauna when it’s cooler.
@JohanLarsson Haha you crazy Swede!
@KitFox I mean, I'm sure there is something to it, but it just doesn't work for me in practice.
Maybe the effect of the constriction is limited by other factors that vary between bodies?
19:48
dirty talk again? can't tell
Haha no!
At least that was not my intention.

@Robusto No, next door—Copenhagen
@StackExchange How do you rap your head in a towel?!
Ah. So you're a southern lad.
19:57
From the Swedish viewpoint—not from many others
@JanusBahsJacquet oh pshaw.
yes

anyway, I've fixed it, thanks. not that rss feed will let us know

Off to look up officious.
@RegDwigнt Just means he thinks tchrist is in the office is all.

@Matt did you get the sample to work?
@JohanLarsson I haven't tried it, sorry.
don't be sorry my friend, I will not stop harassing you with random stuff though :)

20:37
@MattЭллен Yes, it is.
@Cerberus shouldn't be a problem, if it's been casual up to now anyway
@MattЭллен OK thanks!
:D no probs
We have met twice, drank a couple of beers but nothing else.
@JohanLarsson I thought you had a smartphone by now?
I can't fit whatsapp on mine without deleting a bunch of stuff or rooting the phone
20:40
Oh no!
Time to root it, then...
:D
time to get a better phone!
Or buy a modern phone for a hundred pounds or so.
Yay!
but I'll see. I'm thinking of getting a nexus 7
But you need a phone first!
but I need a new mobo (and probably heatsink and maybe cpu)
20:41
Ah, yes.
Stupid electronics, not doing what we want!
yeah
tell that to the people I work with :D they design electronics and they still don't do what we want!
(The thing is also, what's the alternative? Over the phone? I would prefer to be let's-be-friendsed by text, so that I can swallow the humiliation in private. Except if we'd been dating for a while, then we'd have had to meet in person.)
@MattЭллен How is that possible!
@Cerberus (that's what I was thinking)
@Cerberus I know! electronics are hard
(OK good to know we agree!)
They are.
I am constantly tempted to buy a phone with more than 1 GB of RAM.
But I can't justify the purchase.
By the way, you can get a second-hand Nexus 7 for about 70 pounds on Ebay.
I looked it up the other day.
I don't need more RAM just more storage space. I don't do a lot of stuff
@Cerberus oh! nice
20:44
Yes, your predicament is direr than mine.
@MattЭллен ebay.nl/itm/…
For example.
That one should come down to about 70 pounds including shipping and tariffs.
have you changed your ebay PW, by the way?
I'm not sure.
I changed mine yesterday
I tried to change it a few days ago.
it might have been compromised!
in March
or something
20:46
I know.
I did it immediately as I saw the news, before it was on the big tech sites.
But it said "cannot change password into an earlier used password" with every password I tried.
I tried to change it into two passwords, and I wasn't sure what my previous password was again.
Super annoying, all those leaks.
I still have to change some other sites after Kickstarter was compromised a few months ago.
But it is just too much work, I'll just make new accounts whenever mine are stolen or something.
So would you consider buying a second-hand N7 off Ebay?
I'm not sure what I want to spend
I was just bidding on one at £72 but it's shot up over £90 already
maybe I'll go up to £120
ok, £114.23
we'll see. I imagine I'll be out bid soon
But the one I linked to should amount to 70 instant-buy.
Maybe 80.
but it was all Dutch. I couldn't understand what I was paying
and why are your prices in $?
20:55
@MattЭллен ebay.co.uk/itm/…
Because it has to be shipped from America, where everything is cheap.
It is only 8GB, though.
cheap but... 8GB I'd rather pay more and get 16GB
Almost the same price, 16GB.
Should be about 75 pounds total.
@Cerberus Not if you’re actually still on a date with them.
yeah. cool. I'll watch it and see
And it's "buy it now"...although I don't want to encourage consumerism, of course...
@MattЭллен See what?
20:59
@Cerberus nope, broken nokia, two buttons are gone. Writing text messages requires some strategy :)
also dialing many numbers is impossible :D
@Cerberus if I want it. I'm slow to make decisions
@JanusBahsJacquet Ohhh OK, good point!
@MattЭллен Ah OK good!
Same here.
@JohanLarsson Ahh haha great!
