@Robusto Yes, not immediately but I did, hence "softer way". There are similar English based puns with Pho restaurants in France too, but I suspect they are unnoticed by many customers. eg: Phở King and Pho Quynh.
> Le Restaurant Pho King Bon s’excuse donc auprès de tous ceux qui se sont sentis insultés par certains de nos jeux de mots », a déclaré le copro-priétaire
Rob Roy (1817) is a historical novel by Walter Scott, one of the Waverley novels. It is probably set in 1715, the year of the first Jacobite uprising, and the social and economic background to that event are an important element in the novel, though it is not treated directly. The depiction of Rob Roy bears little relation to the historical figure: 'there are two Rob Roys. One lived and breathed. The other is a good story, a lively tale set in the past. Both may be accepted as "valid", but they serve different needs and interests.'Frank Osbaldistone narrates the story. He is the son of an English...
A nuclear electromagnetic pulse (commonly abbreviated as nuclear EMP, or NEMP) is a burst of electromagnetic radiation created by a nuclear explosion. The resulting rapidly varying electric and magnetic fields may couple with electrical and electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges. The specific characteristics of a particular nuclear EMP event vary according to a number of factors, the most important of which is the altitude of the detonation.
The term "electromagnetic pulse" generally excludes optical (infrared, visible, ultraviolet) and ionizing (such as X-ray and gamma...
@jlliagre With almost every breath.
@CowperKettle I would not count on having electricity.
The Carrington Event was the most intense geomagnetic storm in recorded history, peaking from 1 to 2 September 1859 during solar cycle 10. It created strong auroral displays that were reported globally and caused sparking and even fires in multiple telegraph stations. The geomagnetic storm was most likely the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun colliding with Earth's magnetosphere. The geomagnetic storm was associated with a very bright solar flare on 1 September 1859. It was observed and recorded independently by British astronomers Richard Christopher Carrington and Richard Hodgson...
Starfish Prime was a high-altitude nuclear test conducted by the United States, a joint effort of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Defense Atomic Support Agency. It was launched from Johnston Atoll on July 9, 1962, and was the largest nuclear test conducted in outer space, and one of five conducted by the US in space.
A Thor rocket carrying a W49 thermonuclear warhead (designed at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory) and a Mk. 2 reentry vehicle was launched from Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, about 900 miles (1,450 km) west-southwest of Hawaii. The explosion took place at an altitude...
If Russia tries to nuke anyone, the EMP will be negligible. If they intend to disable electronics with a high-altitude detonation, then they'll damage their own just as surely as they'll damage anyone else's.
Popinjay or Papingo (signifying a painted bird), also called pole archery, is a shooting sport that can be performed with either rifles or archery equipment. The object of popinjay is to knock artificial birds off their perches. The rifle form is a popular diversion in Denmark; a Scottish variant is also known. The archery form, called staande wip in Flemish language, is popular in Belgium and is shot occasionally in the United Kingdom under the governance of the Grand National Archery Society. In Germany a traditional shooting at wooden birds placed on a high pole is called "Vogelschießen" (that...
@CowperKettle My great-great-great-great-great-(8th gen.)-grand-father was a crossbowman. He won a few competitions where you had to shoot the Popinjay (oyselet in French).
Wikipedia "painted bird" for "popinjay" is wrong or at least misleading. This word relates to old French papegai (parrot) ultimately from Arabic ببغاء (babaḡāʾ). Cognates with the Spanish papagayo and the Italian papagallo.
A headline in the pro-Kremlin newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda
> Russian soldier with the call sign 'Cannibal' appeals to mobilized. 'Cannibal' says that after September 19, he has only 7 out of his 23 subordinates in fighting condition, and that's why he needs people.
> According to the reporter, the man worked as the director of a cemetery before being sent to the Special Operation, and he has been in the territory of Ukraine for 3 months.
> According to the Cannibal, one must endure through one's first attack, one must be morally prepared to suffer this. He assured that everyone is ready to move forward.
So, in two weeks his squad lost 16 people KIA, MIA, wounded or ill.
> According to Pew analysis, at least 9 million girls are ‘missing’ in India as a result of female infanticide from 2000 to 2019. To compare, this is slightly lower than the entire population of Uttarakhand.
> These girls are said to be ‘missing’ because they should have been born and become part of the population – but didn’t because the foetuses were aborted. According to the centre’s report, Hindus alone ‘lost’ some 7.8 million girls.
The natural ratio is about 105%, not more.
So everything at 110% and above indicates unnatural selection.
@Robusto Yoga? In all sorts of ways. But I'm hardly an expert on the topic.
I know it helped me a lot with my musculo-skeletal issues, caused by excessive computer work. RSI and so forth. It also helped me with my longstanding bronchial issues.
Sometimes it feels like some fancy pants stood a funny way and they called it yoga. Sometimes it's some intense stretching that can probably help, and harm
No, I do mean that. I'm sure some social media browsing unemployed men and women in their thirties have decided yoga sounds like a nice way to earn some money here, precisely because no one's heard of it
> In the Quru River valley in Iran's historic Azerbaijan region[3] between long ridges of volcanic cones in the Sahand and Eynali mountains, Tabriz's elevation ranges between 1,350 and 1,600 m (4,430 and 5,250 ft) above sea level.
But those are Victorian buildings. Indians didn't build those.
@M.A.R. I would have thought Iran would have more parks and gardens than Europe.
It's weird that US prime time television has so many shows about Federal agencies. And the police. Most likely brainwashing via entertainment. The best kind of brainwashing.
@FaheemMitha Iran is like a . . . A cocktail mix. Like crude oil. Like some weird mixture. We have deserts that record some of the highest temperatures on Earth, thick humid jungles (shrinking because developing country), Lord Of The Rings-style mountain ranges and hot, humid flatlands in the same country.
Besides, a city being green has a lot to do with infrastructure, well, 'modernity' in general. I imagine cities in developed nations are on average greener than cities in developing nations.
@FaheemMitha the latter. AFAIK there is a correlation between how 'developed' a nation is and how green the cities are, but the correlation unsurprisingly stops at impoverished nations, like ones in central Africa
@M.A.R. I would be very happy if our two countries could somehow reconcile. I personally have liked all the Iranians I have met and/or worked with. Smart people, diligent, friendly—what's not to like?
@Mitch well, nothing as biodiverse as Amazon, but a strip several dozen kilometers wide below the Caspian sea is very green, and occasionally unmolested by man
@jlliagre yeah it means "dishonorable", but it's sorta stronger
Not necessarily in the meaning, but you know when some insults aren't used until they're meant to hurt? Well, this used to be one of them
@Robusto imgur is blocked
. . . which is normally not a problem but the VPNs are also blocked and heavily throttled
FWIW, if they could come up with a decent replacement for YouTube, like the Chinese have, I might have used it (And I don't imagine YouTube has a strong Iranian userbase anyway)
But they only censor this and that without offering any alternatives
What's worse, Zarif normalized Iranian officials tweeting. So now official news channels sometimes run a piece like "look how [official] roasts American politicians! Awesome" while Twitter is blocked for the rest of the Iranians!
I dunno if it's elitism or hypocrisy or what, but if something like that isn't a sign of decline for conservatives, I dunno what is
