@Řídící I would write an.
Because the next word is pronounced as starting with a vowel.
But a before a parenthesis (something that is disconnected from the main sentence) and pause is probably not so bad.
@CowperKettle They have very high death rates in traffic in America for all modes of transportation, I believe.
And their roads are built for cars, dangerous for everything else.
So then that's what you get, pedestrian deaths.
But motorcycle deaths are high everywhere, because it is an inherently less safe mode (though probably not with such a bad ratio).
@CowperKettle Very cool.
@Mitch Yes, exactly.

Deaths per passenger mile is the usual metric.

Q: Should the below Bullets of Equipment be Capitalized?

Jerry Bourg Jr PURPOSE: 1.1. This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) establishes the process to properly take oil samples required by the Beaumont Reserve Fleet (BRF) for the following machinery equipment: 1.1.1. Barbara Lois: 1.1.1.1. Port Main Engine 1.1.1.2. Starboard Main Engine 1.1.1.3. Port Gear Box 1.1....

Oh, dear lord ...
It's the only way to be sure.

@CowperKettle wait, so bikes are actually that safe?
proceeds to install jets on bike
Wait

@M.A.R. Those are not independent variables.

2:59 AM
@Cerberus Now that you say that, I'm not so sure. maybe Fr 'tu' is high -front- unrounded?
But also, forvo is great, but I hear a lot of people do hyperarticulate or spelling pronunciation. Like all the Americans pronouncing 'fat' as 'fæ t' with extra release on the 't'. Which no one does in real life.

@Mitch Oh, I didn't actually look up those terms. Was just commenting on the IPA.

No "consortium" is mentioned anywhere in the text elsewhere.

@Cerberus sure, I just expected bikes to have a disproportionately higher number of accidents, something like motorcycles

Q: With or without FOR? "The last thing I want is (FOR) anyone to..."

georgeI am doing Proficiency exam practice and came across the following sentence transformation: As you can see, according to the answer key, my answer is wrong. However, I did some research and found out that my version also works. Is it the case of the structure simply being more idiomatic with FOR?

I'm not sure the accepted answer is correct, but I can't explain why

I don't understand this antique joke above..

I guess (!) looks like an embrace
the parentheses being arms, and the ! being the mistress

I don't think that guy is going to get a date

@Mitch :-o

This 1920's mistress: This guy is rich and handsome but I wish he would shut up
but at least these lame jokes are better than that guy from Nantucket
TFW you're in a crowded aisle of a grocery store and you want to cough but instead you guiltily clear your throat several times.
And then an unmasked dude hocks up a loogie.
OK that didn't happen
certainly not in a grocery story.
that would be gross

4:05 PM
catch that unmasked man!

and unhygienic in the best of apocalyptic pandemic times
maybe it would happen -just- as you leave the grocery store.
still just as gross
but not 'call the manager' gross

just get as far away as you can

what is with the spitting thing?
can't he (it's always a dude) just wait until he's the one who is further away?

nothing good

Why aren't feminists all about reclaiming spitting and womansplaining and wearing socks with sandals?

Chief Editor of the magazine "Vazhnye Istorii" that published an investigation into corruption in the Putin family, has just been apprehended by the FSB, and nobody can contact him. theins.ru/news/240932
A real terror campaign against journalists.
Last December, they published an investigation detailing how Putin's relatives were "earning" hundreds of millions of dollars through corrupt schemes.
In 2016, he published a famous investigation about Putin's close friend Sechin, telling how he got his hands on one of the worlds most expensive yachts.

@Mitch socks with sandals? where do you live? Alaska?
(because it would need to be cold to have to wear socks with sandals)
(not because of anything Alaskans might prefer)

4:30 PM
Roman Anin (on the photo) also published an investigation uncovering how Kirill Shamalov, Vladimir Putin's son-in-law, bought a 3.8% share package in Sibur for $100. The market value of the 3.8% package in Sibur is $380 000 000
Basically, since he is a Putin's relative, he was given a bribe of 380 million US dollars.
I guess Roman Anin now will get a lengthy sentence for something like "giving away important information to foreign intelligence". Such cases under Putin's laws can be processed in a completely closed fashion, without providing any glimplse of evidence to the public.
Another journalist has been languishing in court detainment under investigation for over a year now, and nobody even knows what he is charged with.
The horrible thing is that about half of Russians still support and adore Putin. A country of criminals.

5:23 PM
@MattE.Эллен I've onlt ever heard thirdhand that some dudes will do that, Alaska or Germany or if visiting Southern Spain.
But counterintuitively, at the moment it is 15C outside and a comfortable 20C inside and I am currently looking at my feet and interestingly enough I am wearing both sandals -an- socks, white ones in fact.
I'm just as surprised as you are.
Because this morning when I woke up I was wearing neither.

@Mitch but aren't the socks rrally uncomfortable?

The socks keep the spiders from biting.

Someone is going through all my answers downvoting. Then, I just saw that a user was removed on my list. However, none of the serial downvotes have yet been restored. The person was also doing this to me in Spanish. Unbelievable.
