Hi, I would like a bit help here:
> "Bates describes the five principles for success of decision support systems in clinical settings: speed, real-time delivery, integration into workflow, simplicity, and the avoidance of data entry."
I don't understand why we use "the" only for the last term?
would anyone be kind enough to explain this to me?

@Shing do you know what "the" is used for?
@Shing Howdy

@M.A.R. Greetings :)

I mean, generally. What is the definite article used for?

@M.A.R. "the" is used when we want to refer to a particular object?
That sentence is from "Writing in Science" open courses, I found some of the usage is not easy to comprehend. (especially for a non-native english speaker)

@Shing yep
That's exactly what the author is doing.
So the only thing that might be confusing you is that the version without the "the" seems right as well
And it is.

4:12 PM
@M.A.R. yeah, I don't understand, say, why we don't say "the speed"?

@Shing we sure would do in a specific context
Articles are best left alone. Their mastery would come along with proficiency in language
We should argue about the dative case instead

dative case?

ELLIOTTCABLEI swear I read such a word once, as does my partner; but no amount of Googling has been able to suss it out: I’m looking for something that means “to extinguish a family tree,” in the sense of complete genetic extinction; to hunt down and kill all members of someone’s extended family. (Dark, I ...

Q: Is there a good word for "Assuming that"

zazerbayevI would like to replace the bolded portion with one word. "Assuming that one believes Hong Kong should have democracy, is civil disobedience a just and effective means of achieving it? The word "insofar" seems to get close, but I don't think it quite nails it. Or does it?
