12:00 AM
Ubuntu 18.10 was released a few days ago. It has a new set of icons and boots up faster.

@JasperLoy the publisher's have to put a lot of money behind website production for just the basics

I think it will be worth trying. I will install it on my old computer next week.
It is now UTC midnight.
That's when the Wikipedia front page automatically refreshes.

I used to care about stuff like that, but now I just want things to work without my having to worry about things like device driver compatibility and window managers

I hope the world does away with DST altogether. Too confusing, and not necessary at all.
A clock is a clock. Why turn it forward and backward once a year?

Different places introduced it for good reasons. But there are always unintended consequences
Did I tell you about my ideas for doing clock time right?

12:04 AM
I would not know how much daylight it actually saves. I don't know what seasons mean.
@Mitch No

@JasperLoy Oh, living where you do, I'm pretty sure that the time of year really doesn't change the day light hours significantly so there's probably no need for DST.

I think that schools and companies can just start or end earlier or later without changing the time.
Because the time is the time.

@JasperLoy To simplify, without giving a long exposition, the idea is that, though current systems have the hours counted from 'midnight' or noon, instead count from sunrise.
6am is always sunrise. No matter where in the world you are (for your longitude so that places like Antarctica are consistent)

@Mitch I see the advantage of that is that a day really starts at sunrise, not at midnight
Intuitively, the day should begin at 6 AM and the night should begin at 6 PM.
So it would be good to make 6 AM 0000 hrs and 6 PM 1200 hrs.

The difficulty is the computation, having machines know exactly when to start 6am. It's difficult with mechanical systems. But we have satellites now and computers small than a single hair which can do al the computations for us.

12:09 AM
In fact, if we change it this way, midnight will make more sense, because midnight is middle of the night.

@JasperLoy well, say in the UK, in winter, daylight lasts from 9am to 3pm
people will still want to be awake for ~16 hours.

Russia did away with DST a few years ago.

but have it start at 6am. in the UK the sun would go down 6 hours later, but people would still want to stay awake for 10hrs more, just let the numbers continue.
@JasperLoy They also have 11 time zones over their territory

Here at the south pole in Antarctica, there are 24 time zones.
By hopping from iceberg to iceberg, I can easily change my time.

@JasperLoy not for 'white nights' in scandinavia and russia
@JasperLoy haha very confusing

12:13 AM
But with global warming, I might not be able to hop on these icebergs anymore.
I might need to use a surfboard instead.
I am going to eat. Bye!

@RegDwigнt Uh, I don't use a mouse because my cat thinks it's a real mouse...or something that should be destroyed anyhow...and he likes my laptop because it's warm... I think I'm having a personal problem. Never mind, sorry.

@KannE Is your laptop fast or slow?

Q: Is there a word or phrase that encompasses both infidelity and open relationships?

NightstalkerWhen it comes to married couples or people in a dedicated intimate relationship, there are (essentially) two ways to describe one person in the relationship being intimate with someone other than their spouse/significant other. If it's without their partner's consent or knowledge, it's Cheating ...

@Mitch I find their art (or whatever it is on most their food packaging) disturbing...like I may need rations for a can of peaches or something...weird.

@JasperLoy It's slow, I guess. My husband handed it down to me, so I could run AutoCAD in 2014. He's an IT guy and gets free stuff. I like free stuff, but I need something newer, I think. You can't keep a dinosaur forever, just its bones in the end.

Q: What is the opposite of "rarissima" and "rariora"?

He Who Shall Not Be NamedRarissima and rariora are two nouns meaning "extremely rare books, manuscripts, or prints" and "rare books" respectively. Is there a word denoting common or everyday books, or books that have no recherché quality about them? For instance, you would use this word in a sentence like, "You're l...

@KannE IT guys are cool. I might have gone into IT if I started life all over again. I only fell in love with computers much later on in life.

11:22 AM
Yeah. IT guys are cool.
So cool.
And that's just the first six hits on Google Image search. I imagine on page 100 it only gets cooler.

11:43 AM
@RegDwigнt I am trying to sing A Flower's All You Need next week for my channel, but it is so damn hard to not go sharp without any accompanying music. This is the worst song I have ever tried in terms of not going sharp. In fact, when I listen to the original on youtube, I have to use an online pitch pipe again and again to make sure the notes are what I think they are. It's like the notes play tricks on your mind.

@JasperLoy He works for the Army Corps of Engineers. I don't know if he likes it or not...because it's a job, as he says. He doesn't think people are smart or dumb; he thinks they make a lot of mistakes, that's all, and too many mistakes are frustrating. That's kinda hot, I must say. Ha-ha, really though.

Q: A word/phrase for "previously asking someone about how she would want to be treated in spatial conditions"

SasanIn some societies there are some agreements people sign about when they are in spacial conditions. Q: Is there a word for the feeling of growing old?

Jordan AlexanderIs there a word for the feeling of growing old? Or the feeling of becoming more mature? Something that describes the way you feel when you wake up in the morning and notice how much has changed. It's not really yearning for the past, so it's not quite nostalgia. It's a bit more like the way som...

@Robusto I never said he was an IT guy. I said here's what Google Images says is an IT guy.
You really need to start reading my shit.
And anyway, you're only seeking to be contrarian because you are an IT guy. But tell you what: if you were cool, your image would be in that search instead. But it isn't. Q to the E to the I forgot.

@RegDwigнt QED.
Initially I thought why you typed QEI instead of QED.
I then looked at the keyboard and realised that I is too far from D.
Then I saw that you typed forgot.
Then I thought maybe you didn't really forget, but that this is called a whoosh.
Now that is called free association.
