Q: Word/s to replace commas as grouping mechanisims

user58712Examples Truth is, I at my position in time, strive to succeed. The pencil has, yellow scrapes on the sides, which are concerning. The alien looking man with a dragon tattoo, ran quickly. Thank you. Personal Note: The first sentence is the sentence in which I'm trying to replace the com...

Q: collaborative vs collective

LamonteCristoI'm trying to brand a product with either the word 'collaborative' or 'collective', but I am having trouble imagining what emotional response would be given by either word. I've always seen them used interchangeably. The definitions seem pretty similar: collaborative: produced or conducted by...

Trung0246Is it somehow just like "color" vs "colour" and "gray" vs "grey" like Britain English vs American English?

Q: What's a word that describes one who favors grammatical structure over the artistry of their writing? Noun/adj

IsaGutI recently ran into this word but can't seem to find it in my browser history. It wasn't pedant/pedantic or descriptivist. Thanks

Hey guys basic question^^ When I talk about something developed or produced by a certain organization or company, is it correct to say for example:
..the AB1234 module from RandomCompany...?
This "from" sounds a bit weird...

3 hours later…
11:39
@Felix.C That's fine, in my view. There may be some ambiguity if RandomCompany write or produce a module which they only make available via resellers (so you can't actually get it direct from them), but in many cases that's not relevant.

Q: Term for a function that is deliberately excercising edge cases

BrondahlThis is a single word adjective that is in general use, but which has a specific use as a semi-technical term in mathematics. It's something like a "pessimistic" function, or a "lethal" function? It has the connotations of a function that only exists in order to prove that an edge case could in...

Would it be impolitic to say that people are idiots?
Hi All
when we say that something is allocated out of anotherthing
take an example:
metaspace is allocated out of native memory
here I can understand that the metaspace is not part of the native memory
isn't ?

Q: Another term for "honest lying"?

SasanSometimes we mistakenly think something is true and so we tell it to others; Unbeknownst to us, the thing is not true. How to call such untruthfulness? Example: A: You told me she will not be in this party. You lied to me. B: No, I didn't know that myself. She told me she is out of...

Q: What is a word to indicate a single item when multiple items are available elsewhere?

Mike ZavarelloI have a website where I am directing users to take successive evaluations. In the default case, users see three options: initial follow-up reassessment However, not all entries have all three options. There are certain conditions where an entry can only take the initial evaluation. To avoid ...

Q: What do you call a person who's desperate to make things right?

user258835I'm looking for a word that describes a person who desperately wants to make things right. Like a person who would go to their physical and mental limits and even beyond, just to make sure everything's okay. A person who is so devoted (or maybe obsessed is a better word) that it is obviously dan...

@tchrist I have this weird feeling that the SWR feed here has killed chat. It could be entirely coincidence with other reasons for lack of traffic. But it could also be cause. I only think of this as a reason because every so often I'll look into chat and if I see traffic, I'll join in, but if I only see the SWR feed I wont bother. Sort of self-replicating behavior I know, but if everyone else does the same, I feel like it hinders joining in.
Not that chatting is some great thing or that awareness of SWRs is something to be avoided

Hypocrisy is the contrivance of a false appearance of virtue or goodness, while concealing real character or inclinations, especially with respect to religious and moral beliefs; hence in a general sense, hypocrisy may involve dissimulation, pretense, or a sham. Hypocrisy is the practice of engaging in the same behavior or activity for which one criticizes another. In moral psychology, it is the failure to follow one's own expressed moral rules and principles. According to British political philosopher David Runciman, "Other kinds of hypocritical deception include claims to knowledge that one lacks...

Is there a noun for the plate where one puts things to be replaced later?

Sarahis there a word for the joy a smart aleck feels when they are point out to other people how stupid they are? Prideful seems too general. @Seninha plate?
is there a word for it in your native language?
Can I use a bowl instead?
22:48
@Mitch *place
Sorry for the typo.
I don't know any word for it in any language.
It's kinda "a pile where you put things into until they accumulate and you replace them to their proper places".
23:11
@Seninha The description doesn't immediately evoke a single word for it. Do you remember that there is a word for this and are just having trouble remembering it, or do you just hope there's one that captures that concept exactly (neither more nor less)?
temporary place, depot, way station, side car, um...
that first one is not a set phrase but perfectly good for what you want. the others have metaphorical meanings (as set phrases)
23:51
Just in hope. But I remember that there is such a word (but in Italian) which is a synonym of pile but which has also the sense I want.
Anyways, thank you for the help!
