Q: How do you drop the last part of a number which is of less important?

RossSuppose you want to say a number to someone and you do not want to read out the number completely because the last part of the number is not important (at least to your audiance). For example, you want to mention that you waited one hour and something and something could be anything between one m...

@tchrist @AndrewLeach you guys online?
Would it be okay to "feature" my meta? english.meta.stackexchange.com/q/10770/50044
I'd love that very much. :)

8:28 AM
@NVZ Sorry, it would not be ok to feature an off-topic question.

@NVZ Hah, have you seen the Writers version?

NVZ
@M.A.R. nope. please show me. :)
@AndrewLeach i thought so. :)

@NVZ Oh well, slightly different from your post

Q: Why are you on Writers.SE?

user5645If you're not just passing through to get your one single question answered, but are a regular contributor to the site, what do you get from it?

NVZ
@M.A.R. aha! that. It appears that I've voted on a few of those posts already long time ago. :)
@AndrewLeach my idea was actually partly about the site itself; how the users found the site, how it has helped them etc.
not their life stories. But i know that it's either too broad or something. Can we let it stay open for a while. I'm just curious what people would share.
the first answer there is a good example.

@NVZ Not really. There's an off meta post every once in a while people let stay on the meta, and this is one of those. But if someone decides to VTC it, they're not wrong

@M.A.R. well, exceptions do come by. our list of resources is a huge offtopic question with 40,000 views i think.

Your post is neither [support] nor [feature-request] nor [bug]

@NVZ In that case, that's what you should have asked. (Note that I could simply have closed and deleted it when I first found it nine hours ago)
@NVZ Arguably that question is intended to help make the site better by reducing off-topic questions.

NVZ
I thought it was clear from the lines: "I'd like to hear your stories, stories about how you ended up on ELU, what keeps you here, how it has helped you and stuff like that in a few lines."
you could have closed and deleted it, and you still can, and you're doing a legit thing. i just hope you don't though. :)
@M.A.R. so?

@NVZ So, OT

NVZ
will adding any of those tags help?

8:45 AM
@NVZ O.o

NVZ
not really. It's offtopic, sure. But not because it didn't have one of those other three tags.
"discussion" is in itself one of the major tags.

The question could be incredibly counter-productive. If the answers mention something like "I came here to discuss..." then people may think main-site discussion is valid.

@NVZ [discussion] isn't literally discussion; it's just meant to be [FR+bug+support]
It's not a real tag. Something like [other]
So being able to tag as [discussion] doesn't mean the question is on-topic
[discussion]: I'm in need of a new toothpaste. What do you guys recommend?

NVZ
LOL. that's a weird example. nothing related to my question.
my question is about what brings you to elu, why did you stay, etc. so, not many users can actually attempt an answer anyway.

Anyway, I think it can stay
But it will be moot if it doesn't attract many answers

i know. it's an experiment of sorts.
i ws the first and most opposing user to such a question on ips. see:
I'm not sure what answers you expect here. Maybe you can help by giving the first answer yourself. — NVZ Sep 2 at 5:27
sometimes my shift key isn't working.

Um.
Isn't that a bit too early for IPS?
It's not even a year old.

NVZ
aNYWAYS. I'LL SEE you guys later.
uh.. dust under the keys, i suppose.

Q: Description of summary report data: condensed, summarized, something else?

ZeroOneI'm writing a technical description about the usage of personal detail data in a system. Some reports are generated from that data, but those reports do not have anyone's personal details in them. For example, you could have a webshop with orders, where for each order one would store the custom...

Q: Legal Section Marker Character

Just wonderingIs there an English, one word name for the legal Section Marker character?

11:15 AM
@MetaEd lol a LEGO "collection" worth $7000, that's like two sets, what a tosser.
I don't even have a too-impressive collection, and they'd still need two lorries and a truck to haul it away.

The faster I review the longer the queue gets.
The review queue needs a lot of attention.

Maybe how many "good" answers -- having at least a score of 1.
And I'm only looking for a first approximation.
