Q: Word for someone who wants to know all (not pantomath)

iisfireThis question has already been asked somewhat, "Word for someone who wants to know everything about everything" The best definition given was pantomath, the problem with pantomath is that it means someone who knows all (along with wants to know all), while I'm looking for a word that describes so...

Q: With differences at different "levels of detail"

dukeregMany topics have ideas or observations that are true enough to pass in a conversation. It is reasonable to think in that way as you are glancing over the topic, but when you look in more detail the generalisation fails. Something can be true at one "level of detail" but falls apart at another. ...

Q: Word for species suicide?

MikeIf xenocide is the word for species homicide, what would be the analogous term for doing this to one's own species? I was reading an essay on anti-natalism and thought there must be an obvious construction along the lines of suicide, homicide, fratricide, patricide, xenocide, etc. Googling has tu...

@snailplane Thank you for your response.
It's this Oxford learner's dictionary I'm trying to memorize.
It's a dictionary for intermediate learners and tends to be oversimplifying or even inaccurate at times.
(Which makes it a good candidate for me to memorize, since it sends me probing a bunch of other sources to find out about its shortcomings, which in turn feeds my ego and urges me on!)
It's been a while since we last talked. :)

Q: A word for sling's big brother

MichailWhen playing Stone Soup I've stumbled upon a weapon which name I've never heard before. The description said, more or less, that it's a sling's big brother, with its missile pouch attached to a long stick instead of a string. I've had no use for it, so I've left it where I found it. In half an ho...

@Færd (remove "for intermediate learners")
why memorized? The true meaning of a word is in it's usage, not in an afterthought of other words.
'howdy' is possibly old-fashioned but more likely to be regional (country/western/southern). I wouldn't use it yourself unless you grew up using it.
but 'probing a bunch of other sources' is exactly the strategy though...if you didn't have youtube. search for youtube to hear it in context.
for BrE speakers:
Native speakers of British English: please complete my online survey (takes ~10mins and involves playing sounds🔊): http://compsoc.man.ac.uk/~psycholinglab/limesurvey/index.php/787115?lang=en

DilithiumMatrixWe say that a light source shines, and that one source may out-shine another. Is there an equivalent term for a sound, that does not include a negative connotation? For example, "Her voice was able to [outshine] all others in the room." If we wanted to convey that one sound outshined another, ...
