@JohanLarsson: Hey! Wake up and go to sleep!

1:48 AM
We have matter and antimatter. Why shouldn't we have phonemes and antiphonemes? An antiphoneme would be quite a phonemenon.

Q: Qual a diferença entre ironia e sarcasmo?

Filipe OliveiraDe forma simples, qual a diferença e como definir o que é ironia e o que é sarcasmo?

@RegDwigнt You’re right: they’re just weird.

@Robusto what's a "lawn"?
Also, what good are definitions for?
> Fantastique ! #NigelRichards, Néozélandais ne parlant pas français, est champion du monde de Scrabble francophone.

yo, guys!
can you recommend an app for phones that can be used to learn the meanings of sophisticated English words?

> Said Yves Brenez, vice president of the Belgian Scrabble Federation: “If you speak to him he can only say ‘bonjour’, with an accent. He can give the scores in French, because the rules demand it, but that’s it.”

I'm looking for expanding my vocabulary with less frequently used terms so I don't feel like an idiot at fancy conversations with royalty :p
some of the users over at Anime&Manga chat would also like to find such an app

I don't use apps, sorry. Maybe someone else does.
But as far as conversations with royalty goes, it's not the words that matter. It's the style. The syntax. The manners. Nothing with words.
You can still say things like "meat" and "car" and "day".
You don't need to say "amaranthine victuals" all the time.
In fact if you ever said that it'd be pretty dumb.
Anyway, if I were looking for a dictionary app, I'd just look for a dictionary app. I don't think there can be significant differences. It's just a dictionary.
Our meta has no dedicated questions, either. Probably for that very reason.
These days, you can just type your sophisticated word into a Google search box, et voilà, you've learned its meaning.

9:46 AM
googling a word is not exactly what I'm looking for
guys over at ELL recommend ankisrs.net
it does look like what I'm looking for

Wait, that's flash cards. That's a different thing entirely.
And the bad news is, you won't be able to learn a language using flash cards.

10:10 AM
I'm not trying to learn a language, I've been fine with English for more than ten years now
I also found out that flashcards are the sort of apps I need for this
well, I found what I wanted, and now I go back to my main chat room where you're welcome anytime

10:29 AM
ok I need a word, one word.
What is a mother in law but grand mother in law if that makes sense?

10:50 AM
How are things @terdon?

@RegDwigнt I guess they don't have those in your neck of the woods. Or, lately, in California.
@JohanLarsson I guess grandmother-in-law would work.

It is for formal use, still ok?

@Hakase Is that otaku chat?
@JohanLarsson Sure. It's fine.

ty sir

Note that it's a derivative form, but one that will be instantly understood everywhere and in all registers. If you want to be painfully formal you could say "the mother of my mother-in-law" but I don't see any need for that.

11:00 AM
@JohanLarsson Coming along :)

@Robusto It is for my friends visa application, he plans to move to south africa.

@Robusto a bit
we talk about everything
sometimes there is talk about anime or manga but it's usually less than ~30% of the time
general entertainment talk usually

@Hakase 日本語で話しますか?

don't even try that with me, I don't have any idea what any of these mean
there are a few users in the room who know, but we don't speak moon ruins

I asked if people talk in Japanese there, but I guess not.

11:06 AM
rarely and it's not encouraged
we do want to understand what the talk is about
there's Japanese chat room but we don't go there

Understood.

our room is different from all others
ours is about fun, and the rest… idk really

That's what everyone says.

we got our own vision of fun
come see if you like it

Perchance I will.
Reason I asked about talking in Japanese there was that your room's title has nihongo in it.

11:14 AM
@Rob pretty good album, ty for the link.

eh it's just for fancy room name effect

@Hakase Don't tease me, bro. I'm ready to bring it in nihongo.

Q: Ex Machina VS Deus Ex Machina

bijanI have recently watched a movie called" Ex Machina " I searched for the meaning, but Deus Ex Machina was the closest to this title. There certainly must be a relation but can someone please tell me what that might be?

Off topic.

@Robusto you totally can, and I know a few users that will like it, but idk how the rest will react
we just ignore those two mostly, but if it will be too much, they might be asked to take it to Japanese chat

Me parece que sois un poco demasiado estrictos con eso de las lenguas.

something about strictness and languages :p

11:21 AM
Y'all are too strict about the languages you allow in this chat room you speak of.
Παραείστε αυστηροί με τις γλωσσες.

it's not about learning languages, so we don't expect all the folks present to know Japanese

What kind of chat room disallows linguistic chaos? For shame!
:P

also we talk about programming languages sometimes, so not that strict really

> The NZ Parliament has rammed through law changes in just hours to validate tens of thousands of potentially illegal speeding tickets.
The tickets were issued in up to 25 local government areas which may have failed to renew their speed limits from 2004, meaning all tickets issued on roads other than the open road for the last 11 years may have been invalid.
In a rare move, the Government back-dated the law changes to ensure no one could mount a legal challenge.
Err. Correct me if I'm wrong, but NZ is subject to Common Law, where ex post facto is verboten.
Nullum crimen, nulla poena sine praevia lege poenali.
That shit, you know.

@terdon Si, yo lo creo también.
@RegDwigнt That's Greek to me.

11:29 AM
How much do you charge for it to become Nahuatl to you?

Far less than $3000.
Click the link to get the actual price.

That... is far less than $3000! Wow.

You didn't click yet.

I charge $3001 per click.

Looks like we don't have a deal.

11:31 AM
Also, I know all the URLs of all rickrolls by heart by now.

So you paid the price already. OK.

Manyfold.
Such were the times. Good times.
These days nobody even knows who Rick Astley is anymore.

That one has Russian comments, though.

History repeats itself.
@Robusto I can put Russian comments on anything myself, thank you very much.

@RegDwigнt I'm sure you can, and I'm sure they're the envy of the civilized world and just perfect for YouTube comments. But you might like to see what other bonehead Russians are saying once in a while. You know, check out the competition.

11:34 AM
I run out of competition. Always have, always will.

*on

I on out of competition. Always have, always will.
Thank you.

*run out on
But you knew that.

I knew over seven other things, too.
I am a marvel of DC engineering.
So is that how Ron Paul got his first name? He said "run" and someone said "*on" and he totally misunderstood?

Happened with his son too. To denote that the new Paul was a new addition, Ron referred to him as "And Paul" which got corrupted to Rand Paul.

11:40 AM
Dedicated to his parents, Ayn Rand and Paul.
Half a mile from my home, there's a driving school where the owner struggled where in the name exactly to put the "and son" bit.
He ended up with Georgs Fahrschulunternehmen und Sohn.
I must say, it is exactly as worst as any of the alternatives.

@JohanLarsson Oh! I have one!

but you know things

@skillpatrol Troubling. See doctor in 5 hours.

This is taking forever.

@RegDwigнt I'm surprised he didn't deck it out a little more, something on the order of Hauptbesondersfahrschulunternehmenregierung oder so etwas.

11:46 AM
And it is herewith that I support your surprise.

Clearly that is many letters better than the original.

@JohanLarsson Oh, that's not the word I was thinking of.

At least 23 letters better, by my informal count.

And that is over 22 letters!

Clearly.

@Robusto okay let's see. Kevin Bacon wasn't in Nine and a Half Weeks with Laurence Fishburne. Laurence Fishburne wasn't in A River Runs Through It with Reese Witherspoon. Reese Witherspoon was not with you in The Thin Red Line. Conclusion: you are Tom Tykwer.

11:56 AM
I know not this Tykwer. I can hardly even type that.

That always happens when you're trying to type "alibi" instead.
Run Lola Run, The Perfume, Cloud Atlas etcpp.

Q: Using of wish in English

Sanjar IgamovNow I feel sick. I wish I ( didn't eat) or (hadn't eaten) pork with cheese for dinner. I would use " hadn't eaten" as it was my dinner but " now I feel sick" makes me be confused.

No. That is not how you write a title. No, no, no.

titles are imporant
yes, yes, yes
:-)

@RegDwigнt Why didn't you just close that as GR? Am I missing something?

He gets points for editing first.

perhaps, perhaps, perhaps
:D

12:05 PM
I presume that is the reference?

@terdon I wouldn't know where to look it up. What is your link?

excellent presumption

@Robusto dude will not stand this presumptiousness.

If you really love me say yes / but if you don't dear, confess

@Robusto He ate pork with cheese, not cake.
@RegDwigнt True. It's really basic English though.

12:09 PM
@terdon Aren't those both in the saturated fat food group?

BASIC? isn't that an obsolete programming language yet?

@Robusto Depends on how much of them you eat.

she's trading her mg for a white chrysler lebaron

No, the sentence is not English. While we are at it: what is "plz"? What is "Ex"? Do we have to put the same amount of care into our answers? In that case: lol teh sentance isnt enlgish. kthxbai — RegDwigнt ♦ 47 secs ago
People writing plz are starting to piss me off big time.

Trolling for upticks, yeah? All right, I give you that.

12:12 PM
you get "pissed" off too easily pal

"Please" means "please". "Plz" means the exact opposite of "please". It means "I have so little respect for you I won't even waste the split second that is needed to type six letters. You want me to say please, you go fuck yourself".
@skillpatrol no I am getting pissed off after twenty years of DERPnet.
That is not easily.
It takes skill and determination.
You as skill patrol should be able to see it.

Welcome to Regulageddon!

I will Michael Bay you into Transformgendon.

I only respond to Massachusetts Bay, his older brother.

lowering your expectations helps a lot

12:14 PM
Also, why does the SC believe one has to use one's picture for a gravatar. Do they think this is just a branch of Facebook?

All the lights long went out in Massachusetts. Even before Detroit, in fact.

You know that is untrue, yet you persist in spreading that vicious propaganda.
You can't buy Gillette Stadium for $500k and change.

team included? :-)

Maybe you'll be able to buy whatever shithole the Raiders play in (@skillpatrol take note), but not the place our Patriots play and shit.

come to think of it, they're offering a course in sabermetrics on line at BU

12:18 PM
As a nod to latinos, no doubt.
Ud quiere saber, here's some metrics.
Also, what is BU? Bullshit University?

that's high tech baseball stats, Boston U

NOU
Boston boston Boston boston boston boston Boston boston.

@RegDwigнt Boston University, sometimes referred to by the locals as B Jew. Hey, I'm just reporting the facts. Don't shoot the messenger.

Don't you have the one about ladders?

12:21 PM
@Robusto I've not fired a shot. Still aiming.

You're supposed to fire first, then aim. First rule of YouTube Comments.

Reminds me of a brand of Soviet chocolates.

12:25 PM
You mean vodka?

Rot Front Open Joint-Stock Company (Открытое акционерное общество "Рот Фронт", ОАО "Рот Фронт") is one of the oldest Russian confectionery manufacturers and a member of Obyedinyonnye Konditery holding company. Rot Front produces over 200 types of confectionery and sells in all Russian regions, CIS countries, Western Europe, North America and the Middle East. The factory was established in 1826 and acquired its present name after the German Communist slogan Rot Front!, during the 1931 delegation visit headed by Ernst Thälmann. == References... ==
> and a member of Obyedinyonnye Konditery
Jesus fucking Christ, issue a warning before starting grinding your sentences through grinders.
A nice STOP READING HERE would be nice.

Is that in ROT-13? Sure looks like it.

That must be it.
> and a member of Bolrqvalbaalr Xbaqvgrel

And I'm weary from all the so-called "design" that's all about tweaking character shapes. That is so played.

Yeah, now that makes sense.
@Robusto hey those guys are from the actual friggin past. That logo is older than you.

12:29 PM
No way.
But perhaps they use Rot because it will Rot your fucking teeth?

That's like blaming Star Wars for sucking. Sure it sucks. But it invented sucking. So you gotta give it some slack.

Star Wars didn't invent sucking until they had tried not sucking and failed.

I didn't specify at which point or through which process Star Wars invented sucking. Such specifics are well beyond my point.

That was a lagniappe. Enjoy.
No charge, this time.

@Robusto And that's the hardest part. Can't even get decent food — right after I got here, I ordered some spaghetti lagniappe, and I got egg noodles and ketchup.

12:33 PM
So what would be the "real" Russian acronym that would correspond to ROFLMAO?
Just curious.

I'd say yours is alright?
I can't say I've ever seen it or paid attention to noticing.
Лолs are ubiquitous.

haha! the French actually have a term "peepee woman" that they use: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dame_pipi
it's like a toddler's term that caught on

Sung to the tune of Witchie Woman.

Welcome to the French language.
Tis full of such things.

Jez
is it?

12:34 PM
It is.

Jez
i've not really heard many toddler terms

> I hate the fucking Eagles, man.

Jez
if anything French usually tried to come up with more euphemistic terms
like "toilette" itself

@Robusto Fuck you man. If you don't like my fuckin' music get your own fuckin' cab!
@Jez err. How is Madame pipi not euphemistic. Its whole point is that it is.

@Jez Ceci n'est pas une pipi.

Jez
12:36 PM
erm
"toilette" is euphemistic
"peepee" is kind of directly referring to piss

In your crazy British English mind perhaps.
Everywhere else, "toilet" is in-your-face direct. Nobody would say "toilet" in polite society.

Today's vocabulary word: dottle.
"Something went wrong!
The page has not loaded completely and some content and functionality are corrupted. Please reload the page or if you are running ad blocking disable it."
Yeah, I'll get right on that.

So that's how toddlers are different from dottlers.

@RegDwigнt Dude!

First time I've seen a plea for me to stop using AdBlocker.
What chance do they really think they have?
I started using AdBlocker to, you know, block ads.
It wasn't a mistake on my part.

12:41 PM
@Robusto I'll just check with the boys down at the crime lab, they've got four more detectives working on the case.

Functions As Designed: Will Not Fix.
@RegDwigнt Working in shifts!

Today's Wonders of the Old World @Cerberus:

Jez
@RegDwigнt That doesn't mean it wasn't originally a euphemism; just that any euphemism eventually tends to become just as rude itself as the original

We are talking about current language. Nobody cares if "cunt" used to be a euphemism in 3rd century.

Jez
i don't think that was ever euphemistic

12:51 PM
Nobody cares if it was.
Talk about missing points.

Jez
actually you're missing the point, which was that French originally coined the term "toilette" as a euphemism
no matter what it seems like now
it was probably a bit like "washroom"
