01:00 - 22:0022:00 - 00:00

1:24 AM
Peaceful, like a summer morning. A couple clouds in the sky. Birds singing.
Goddam birds. Can't they just shut up. So loud. What do they need to sing for?

1:38 AM
So they get laid.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Doesn't everybody?

@Robusto pretty much.

I got a new gadget.

It was on sale, the version with the heart monitor, and I got it for $229, tax included.
That's around half off.

No kidding!
Not too fancy for me, though!
It correctly plotted my ride today, all 26 miles of it, and told me at the end my time, total distance covered down to 1/100th of a mile, even how many calories I had burned.

For the record, I burned 1,359 calories. That's more than I expected.
Oh, forgot to mention: elevation. Vertical travel (up and down) was 310 ft. over the course of the route. Didn't seem like that much, but I guess GPS knows better than I do.

I uh, I took a walk today.

2:09 AM
Hehe. Walks are good. I took one too earlier this morning while the birds were singing. Only a couple of miles, but it was fun.

10 hours later…
Hi!
What is that about?

Humans.
Click the link.
Or just look at it, it's pretty to look at.

I've clicked it.
The backgrounds are skin colours.

Yes.

The moon is cheese.

11:56 AM
Cheese is the good.

12:27 PM
@RegDwigнt That one dude is really pink. I don't think pink cheese is good
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Eww... PDA. Get a room.

@Mitch yes. Pink people are the worst. They got tiny little voices that go peep, peep, peep. They got little noses and tiny little teeth. They walk around telling great pink lies.
Don't want no pink people round here.

I'm on a Skype call with India and it sounds like they're in a shower with a cuckoo clock.

So?
I can find nothing unusual about being in a shower with a cuckoo clock while skyping.

Sure, where you are. But in India?

No prob. Ganges can stand in for shower, and a dead body for the cuckoo clock.
I admit a cowcow clock would be more common, of course.

2 hours later…
2:26 PM
Wait, the moon is cheese?
I thought it was chalk.

Chalk to the hand, cause the face ain't a blackboard.

2:48 PM
It is entirely impossible to answer this question without further context. In fact you can't even answer it with all the context you do have. But you expect us to make do with none whatsoever. That's brutal, man. — RegDwigнt ♦ 3 mins ago
Putting this here for easier copypasta.
These days I feel like I need that as a template.

This one is better:
And Lord spake: "Fire come from below. Water come from hills." And thus it happened. And He saw that it was good. — RegDwigнt ♦ 8 mins ago
:)

Yeah but that one is single-use only.

3:26 PM
@Robusto The alternative is worse.

And that is . . . ?

@Robusto Being in a cuckoo clock with a shower. Obviously.

GoToMeeting?
@terdon Why that would be luxury! When I was a kid we thought it was being rich to have a cuckoo watch or a toilet, much less both.

@Mitch Yes, but imagine having to carry the shower around with you.

@terdon That is the only alternative? I find that very unlikely.

3:56 PM
@Cerberus Does that include the holocaust victims?

4:53 PM
@Rob I forgot to listen to Armed Forces on Saturday :(

5:04 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 That's OK. You probably know it all by heart anyway.

user116848
5:15 PM
Where did everyone go?

user116848
hi

Q: "Nobody but him was present." or "Nobody but he was present."

Phoenix Nobody but him was present. Nobody but he was present. Which is the correct usage and why?

Dupe.

5:35 PM
@Robusto I believe it does. All deaths attributable to WWII.
The Holocaust (from the Greek ὁλόκαυστος holókaustos: hólos, "whole" and kaustós, "burnt"), also known as the Shoah (Hebrew: השואה, HaShoah, "the catastrophe"), was a genocide in which approximately six million Jews were killed by Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime and its collaborators. Some historians use a definition of the Holocaust that includes the additional five million non-Jewish victims of Nazi mass murders, bringing the total to approximately eleven million. Killings took place throughout Nazi Germany and German-occupied territories. From 1941 to 1945, Jews were targeted and methodically murdered...

It's summertime / and the livin's easy

fish are jumpin' / and the cotton is high

Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.

June / soon?
I suppose it rhymes, but...

user116848
I think we are singing/rhyming?

user116848
5:48 PM
It's summertime and livin' is getting difficult.

Only some of us!

user116848
I mean it is getting very hot.

I think you are mistaken, it's still rather cold.

user116848
Heh.

user116848
For you maybe.

5:49 PM
Hehe.

@Cerberus it's from a short story.

user116848
Oh, look, it is 30 C (84 F) here.

@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Funny.
@Arrowfar Oh, look, it's 12 C here.

user116848
@Cerberus Wow!

user116848
5:53 PM
We get that only in winters.

Brr indeed.

user116848
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 Hi ninja.

-----------------------------------------------> howdy

It's actually fine, 12 degrees is perfectly livable.

user116848
Howdy!

5:53 PM
Anything between 0 and 25 is fine with me.

user116848
Yes 12 degrees is very good.

My favourite temperature is 20!

user116848
I see.

If I don't have to do anything, especially not walk around in the sun, then 25 is nice.
What do you prefer?

user116848
I prefer 16-25 too if it is not sunny.

user116848
5:55 PM
In Centigrades.

Yay!
We could live in the same environment, then.

user116848
Yes we can.

If it's sunny, I like 15–18.
Of course the wind makes a huge difference too.

what are these temperatures
they are insane

No, they are kg of gold that we receive.

user116848
5:57 PM
But here we can't escape sun. It is overhead all the time. Unless it is dark of course.

user116848
Less cloudy I mean.

user116848
So sunglasses and AC is the order of the day.

Ah, I see.
And is it windy?
A cool breeze helps.

user116848
@Cerberus Sometimes, yes.

Hmm.

6:00 PM
which meter do you use to measure breeze temperature?

user116848
Overall the weather here kinda sucks.

user116848
km/h I think.

user116848
I mean it is all on the Google, temperatures etc.

km/h for sure doesn't measure temperature, and it is also not a meter.
but rather a unit.
so you fail at everything.

user116848
Hmm

user116848
6:05 PM
Excuse me?

user116848
no comment

@GeorgePompidou dial it down.

@GeorgePompidou A breezometer, d'oh.
@GeorgePompidou You think this is funny, but people who do not know you don't get it, and it is extremely rude to speak that way to strangers.
And maybe you say this to vulnerable people too, you just don't know.

nah, saying "how does it feel to be a total failure" isn't a big deal.

It is.

it just isn't, sorry.

Very well, then I must flag you.

6:40 PM
flag me?

You know I only flag people maybe twice a year here.
I know you don't think it is a big deal.

nor do most people.

It wouldn't be a big deal if someone did that to you.

@GeorgePompidou Sorry, it is. Especially to someone who is not a native speaker and can't be expected to understand the nuances you think you are conveying.

it just is, in general, not a big deal.

6:41 PM
But it is a big deal for many other people, if they don't know you.

@GeorgePompidou Yes, I know you feel that all the insults you throw at people aren't a big deal. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way. You really might want to reconsider the way you treat people in this chat room.

Thanks, Terdy or Snaily.

@Cerberus Didn't have time to. Nor was I really inclined to dismiss it to tell you the truth.

@terdon Hey, he has been behaving very well of late.
@terdon Ah OK.

Anonymous
Yeah, I didn't decline the flag. The flag disappeared before I had a chance to do anything

6:43 PM
Right.
The flag doesn't matter much anyway.

Anonymous
Agreed

@Cerberus Oh? Last time I saw him chatting he was insulting Mitch. I tend to avoid the chat when he's around.

Mmm how long ago was that?

Glad to hear it if true though.
@Cerberus Dunno, last week perhaps?

Perhaps I haven't seen that particular exchange.
Oh.
But Mitch knows him, he can take it.
Besides, @Mitch is unoffendable, we know that.
Inoffensible?

6:45 PM
@Cerberus I find that offensive!

@Mitch My apologies!

And I ean that to sting!

Oops, too late to remove that now.

Argh! joke ruined by bad typing!

Perhaps it will be starred now instead.

6:46 PM
@Cerberus True enough. It was actually Reg. Who is also hard to offend. And George did end up apologizing, which is to his credit.

so many layers!

I got it even with the typo.

@terdon ait!

@terdon Ah OK, I think I remember that.

I don't (really!).

6:47 PM
But, as we know, arrowfar is a bit more sensitive and doesn't deserve that kind of language.

Poor Mitch, didn't even get a chance to flex his insult shields.

What was the subject?

We could always just inslut him a bit.
There's an apt typo!

@terdon Yes. And not unreasonably insensitive.

@Cerberus Wonder Woman, where are you when I need you!

6:47 PM
Mich is an inslut HAHAHA.

Better than being an outslut, I guess :)

@terdon I took a quiz once. In Cosmo.

@Mitch I don't know who that is, but does she insult people?

@Mitch Did you win?

@Cerberus Damn you for misspelling my name! (at least you got the pronunciation write)

6:48 PM
@Cerberus No, she outsluts them. Usually.

Hehehe.

@Cerberus nope. She's as earnest as Captain America.

Oh, and this is who Wonder Woman is:

I did that on purpose!! Or, if I didn't, I'm believably claiming that I did!

6:49 PM
@terdon It's the kind of test where if you lose you really win.

Ah, that.

@Mitch No arguments there.

@terdon Why doesn't she simply cross her arms in front of her boobs?

@Cerberus Where's the fun in that?

Either thay, or just let them jiggle!

6:51 PM
@terdon I think the star board should include the image, because the link is boring.

@Mitch Agreed. I love that comic though. I think I first saw it here a month ago.

@terdon The quiz was "Are you a slut?". I will not tell you my score.

Thanks!

But beware of clicking on any of those links. computer hygiene is similar to sex hygiene

Hullo!

7:01 PM
Hi!

How are you this fine day? :)
(This room seems quite full, I like it!)

Where do you usually hang out?

ELL, ELC :)
I wander a bit, too.

Oh! I've never been to those. Was ELC made so people can actually help with English?
(because ELL didn't)

Yup. There was a meta post about it :)

A: Behold! A new chatroom approaches

HarryCBurnI like the idea, but there are a few points and thoughts that I'd live to mention: "Sometimes, it gets just too busy in there." Although I agree that in some rooms, such as the Python room on SO (whose visitors regularly succeed in making it the busiest room on the network), might be better off...

Woo, finished the draft of Chapter 3 in my book c:

7:21 PM
nice.. what book? "How to write books"?
I read a book once called something like "How to read books". I didn't get much out of it.

@Mitch Ba-dum *tish*
It's a short story c:
Although I'm not sure if it constitutes short.
I can send you a link if you like, but don't feel any need to read it.

@terdon sensitivity is a matter of sensitivity and isn't my problem. am I free to flag things which are offensive to me, but perhaps not to others who are not as sensitive in a certain respect?
if so, how can I flag things?

Click the arrow next to a message when you hover over it :)
(Not delving into who's right here at all.)

@GeorgePompidou Of course. Everyone is free to flag anything they find offensive.
@GeorgePompidou Hover over any chat message and a little flag appears on the right.
Ah, but I see you found it.
Very clever of you.

that made me feel crappy.
so there you have it. we are all sensitive to something. I usually do not concern myself with what others are sensitive to, and I don't make others concern themselves with what I am sensitive to.

7:28 PM
@GeorgePompidou That's a recipe for very strained social interactions.

This is why, when I popped in here an hour ago to respond to the first flag, I said "The flag was rejected. Drop it."
It was rejected. Drop it.

Anonymous
@Rainbolt That wasn't very helpful.

I was still banned for half hour.
because apparently someone was sensitive to something I said.

@GeorgePompidou That can be automatic. If enough users flag you, you get suspended for a while.

Obviously you can keep flagging things. It attracts moderators like flies trying to see what all the fuss is about.

7:29 PM
@Rainbolt not constructive message removed by me - <3

Note that my Buffy Avatar is fully locked and loaded.

Anonymous
@Richard Buffy! <3

@Richard Smite 'em!

Ah, nice. Mine is blue.
And called Mödlnir, of course.

7:32 PM
I have a selection

and being offended by something which to me is part of regular conversation.

@GeorgePompidou - Please keep offensive language to a minimum.

@GeorgePompidou in real life you're free to act and speak as you wish. In real life, people have the choice of walking away from you. We expect a certain minimum level of civility here and yes, you too need to abide by it.
Direct name calling, for example, is a definite no no.
This particular room is more lenient than most and the regulars here have no issues with profanity or any range of subjects being discussed. This does not extend to personal attacks and insults though.
9

@GeorgePompidou Dude, you're being willfully obtuse.

Anonymous
@GeorgePompidou Don't take it as advice. Just take it as a statement of the requirements if you'd like to participate in chat.
5

7:36 PM
^^

@snailboat That's like the (I think good) advice given to narcissists, just act like you care about other people and you'll start to get better results.
Even though it may be a charade for the narcissist, and internaly still thinks everything should revolve around them, as long as they are consistent in treating these petty insignificants as though they mean something, it turns out that these non-entities will respond to you better.

There's something that narcissists and sociopaths have in common then.

@George: anybody can flag any chat submission for being 'offensive' of whatever reason. Technically what this does is get put in a mod queue to be judged. If the mod agrees it is offensive it'll be removed. If they don't agree then the flagger might get penalized. This prevents frivolous flagging. What does 'offensive' mean? It can mean absolutely anything (don't like your views on the Trinity, used bad language, farts in church).

FYI, George is taking a short break.
Hence his lack of response.

Ah, that pesky automated suspension.

7:45 PM
@terdon big overlap.

True dat.

@Richard Yep, just pinging him so he gets some explanation when he comes back.

@Mitch - Ah, I see.

1 hour later…
crl
8:48 PM
How would you translate the French expression: "tel père, tel fils" or "tel maitre, tel chien"?

@crl - Like Father, Like Son
@crl - Dogs take after their owners.

crl
@Richard Ah I like the 2nd, are you sure about the 1st one?

(Soshite chichi ni naru) Titre français : Tel père, tel fils Titre anglais : Like Father, Like Son Réalisation : Hirokazu Kore-eda Scéna...

crl
Right, the 1st one is correct

The second one would literally be "like master, like dog" which doesn't make sense.

crl
8:54 PM
ok

Hmm was he suspended?
His deleted lines were not so bad.
He didn't need to be suspended imo., just chided.
Only the personal name-calling was bad, but he stopped, so no need for suspension.
The most photographed places on earth, according to Google.
Poor central Africa.

crl
interesting, do you have the raw data?

9:15 PM
I really like Hirokazu Koreeda.

@Cerberus - Briefly so.

I recently saw After life by him

9:35 PM
@crl I don't.
@Richard Still, that is undesirable.

there's a spectrum of how offensive things can be, and everyone draws the line at a different place on that spectrum. I'm clearly a bit farther in the offensive direction and some people are clearly a bit farther on the non-offensive direction. sometimes, you guys claim that something which I said is offensive, and I just don't see it as such.
in those cases, nothing can be done except to ban me.
so that's that, and I think nobody can improve this by telling me rules of the chatroom some more.
I know the rules, I know not to say offensive things.
it's a matter of judgement, and judgement is made.
by the mods or by the rockers or whatever you wanna call them.
I am offended by things too. a kid made a joke about the holocaust a few days ago, and I was so livid I almost beat him up. I know not to say offensive things, believe me.
it's still a totally subjective call to be made, though. and sometimes, I judge something as reasonable and you guys don't.
whatever. shrugs just ban me next time pay no more attention.

Let Rule #1 be your guide.

@GeorgePompidou Well, why can't something else be done?

And you can't go wrong from there

You could refrain from adding negative nouns or adjectives to a specific person present in the room.
And vebs, is this person is the subject.
That is a rather specific guideline that will be quite effective!
And use no vulgar words to describe someone else's lines.

9:51 PM
what if I want to say that someone's line is fucking awesome
giggles
scuttles off

Anonymous
I don't think anyone here minds that sort of profanity. Personal attacks are different than using a swear here or there.

@Richard man, this is a lot of really boring stuff to read. utter snoozefest. and there's nothing specific in there. it's basically just "be nice."
I know. I try to be nice.

@GeorgePompidou That is of course fine. You're not stupid!
If there is someone in this room that you don't like, the solution is very simple: don't talk to this person.
