@tchrist Is it in your chat?

2 hours later…
2:45 AM
@tchrist Feel free to edit my question. I'm a novice at IPA.
@tchrist: 'George R. R. Martin . . . confirmed that characters not yet dead in the books will meet their fates in the upcoming season. “People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy."'
What the flyin' hoojama?
Maybe he's not even going to finish the books.

3:13 AM
@Robusto Naw, I’m just disputing the : part being /phonemic/ rather than [phonetic]. But most people don’t make a distinction. However /ju/ and /u/ are phonemic distinctions, since minimal pairs are easy to find: moot and mute being one example.
@Robusto The showmakers are doing what neither Martin nor his editor dared: pruning unnecessary stuff so they can get to the end at the appointed hour.
@Robusto This is always possible. And horribly frustrating. People like Tolkien and Wolfe had their full story already written before the tales were published serially. Martin didn’t, and it has sprawled on for two decades now with no end in site.
Plus Martin has no plot-arc endings in books 4 and 5. The both of them just feel like installments of a serial that he’s paid by the word for writing.

I finally learned about minimax, pruning, and expectimax

@tchrist To me, the whole series felt like that on television.

I get a little square in the original (using Chrome).
And I would say that put, took, book are /u/ or /ʊ/ and blue, food, coot are /u:/

9:21 AM
What is tho correct adjective or noun to represent someone who is more expressive in writing than in speaking?

Hello @matt. It's Fri.

Hi @ABeau. Yes it is. How was Thursday/

@MattE.Эллен It was quite bad. But I hope Fri will be better. I more or less have thought of the way to make progress this year. But I need to calm down because I keep getting anxious when I think of all the shit that has happened.

@ABeautifulMind what do you plan to do? I'm glad you've thought of something

@MattE.Эллен Just ways to deal with the themes that are bothering me. I tried to resolve them a while back, but I did not really succeed.

Hopefully your new plan will be better.

@Robusto and @cornbreadninja麵包忍者 They’re calling for another sesquifoot by me for this weekend starting tonight (it was 60 yesterday). Pretty sure that was last weekend too. Seems early for us to be falling into that pattern.

Hi
How is everyone
Got a new Macbook Pro Retina
seems a bit bulky. Bulkier than my MBA
Not sure if I made the right choice.
Why is everyone so calm and mute?

Maybe because you are so close to 10k?

I think 20k privileges should include ability to edit one's own comments.

but you can already
just a time limit
time limit makes sense imo
Late edits could produce bs

2:40 PM
Yeah, but trusted users would use that privilege wisely, I'm sure. Especially since a mod could look at the edit history to settle disputes .

sure, valid point
I could use it to fix typos

@Robusto That’s an interesting suggestion.

@tchrist Your request for people to edit their comments to include IPA instead of respelling is what made me think of that.

3:01 PM
It seems so reasonable, I'm sure it would provoke a wave of luddite venom on MSO.

3:18 PM
@ABeautifulMind I'm glad of it. Hope you are feeling better.

Q: Can we add ability to edit one's own comments to 20k privileges?

RobustoIn response to a question on pronunciation of mine on ELU, various users made comments that included "respelled" pronunciations. @tchrist made a comment in which he requested that the others edit their comments to include IPA pronunciations. This seems a reasonable request to me, but unfortunate...

Thanks for the down vote. You know who you are.

Question: When should you use dashes in a sentence? I always thought you used them to temporarily interrupt your sentence to add a fact, but it seems in most cases that usage can be replaced by commas.

But dashes look cooler.
0
Q: Comma vs. em-dash

mangeloWhen is it appropriate to use em dashes instead of commas? I have tried commas in this sentence, but it seems too disjointed: I'm going to be here at Zep, just up the road from KO near Howell Mill, for a few more weeks, and thought you and Kelly might like to meet somewhere for lunch one day.

@Mateon1 Personally, I use them--especially in the case of long, carry on, interminable and near incomprehensible sentences--where they can help clarify far more than yet another set of commas.

But really, I don't care what you've heard about terdon's run-on sentences--seriously, I don't care what you've heard--he's still an excellent writer.

3:34 PM
@KitZ.Fox What a beautifully subtle correction :) I did indeed mean run- and not carry-on.

So subtle, I did not myself notice it.

@KitZ.Fox That's just how good you are.

Well, Subtle is my middle name.

@KitZ.Fox I thought it was Zubtle.

taps nose

3:50 PM
@Mateon1 It's a matter of style. Be aware that while dashes are a stylistic choice, using them too much can weary the reader. I personally reserve them for parentheticals that I wish to emphasize.

Q: Why does the "i" in naïve have "two dots"?

HappyI have observed that the word naïve is written with two dots on the i. Why is this? Is it correct to write the word with a single dot, as in naive? Are there any other English words with such two dots?

Answer: Because it was written by @tchrist or @Cerberus.

Yes, very biased votes.
My cousin is in the army now and came home crying, so my auntie called me to ask for advice.
@Robusto I have never used a dash in my entire life. That's why I am so dashing.

@terdon Haha yay!
But you seem to imply that noöne else would.
Search for people like @RegDwigнt writing "noöne" in this room, and you will find.
@Robusto OK, thanks.
@tchrist So the Unicode thingy must be something you did, since Rob saw it too.

A: Does anyone write "noöne" with a diaeresis?

tchristWhenever you find a computer spell-checking program does not know how to spell something, your best first assumption is that the program is an idiot. You will usually be right this way. Including in this case: Wiktionary lists noöne as an “obsolete” spelling of no one. Did people use it? Yes...

All I know about Linz is that they have lots of industry.

@Cerberus I figured you'd get a chuckle out of that one. I was off in the stacks and saw you had mentioned Sachertorte.

@tchrist Hey, it has just occurred to me that English is developing a similar distinction to the Romance ser/estar. You are not very expansive / you are not being very expansive.

"O sea" is an idiom, kind of a discourse marker. It's like "in other words", or just "or", or even "um so".

@tchrist Did you mean en or es there?

Yes, but be aware that the Mexicans like USAmericans tend to use simple past a bit more often, while the Spanish like the British are more apt to reach for the present perfect for recent events.

Sven Yargs on February 20, 2015

A question on EL&U “On the origin of ‘blizzard’” asked about the origin of the word blizzard. The history of usage of the word during the period between when it first appears in print in the United Sates (1834) and when it is first used in the sense of “a fierce snowstorm” is fascinating (to me)—but even a less than exhaustive account of that history of usage too long to serve as an appropriate EL&U answer. Consequently, I’m putting it here.

One weakness in some modern analyses of blizzard involves a failure to acknowledge the wide (and widening …

@MattE.Эллен That's the tl;dr version?

Female fans are not allowed to enter football stadiums in Iran on the grounds that there will be a high risk of violence or verbal abuse against them. The film was inspired by the director's daughter, who decided to attend a game anyway. The film was shot in Iran but its screening was banned there. == Plot == Most of the characters in the film are not named. A girl disguises herself as a boy to go attend the 2006 World...

Hi, I suddenly feel terribly anxious, came to chat to calm down.

> Though the U.S. city of St. Louis is fairly well known outside of the United States, the same apparently cannot be said for its state-side pronunciation. St. Louisans—and most Americans for that matter—pronounce it as “saynt-LOO-iss,” while the British—as with Notre Dame—lean closer to the French pronunciation, “saynt-LOO-ee.” That said, I am reliably informed that Americans will occasionally adopt the latter pronunciation, if only for the purposes of humor.
Well . . . I guess this guy never heard "Meet me in St. Louis, Louie / Meet me at the fair" from the musical "Meet me in St. Louis." Only a numskull would not know that it was pronounced "Louie" . . .

He is considered one of the fathers of modern epidemiology, in part because of his work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in Soho, London, in 1854. A little more than a foot in most of the lower parts, and closer to twice that in the foothills. Unfortunately, this one may not do much towards feeding the snowpack higher up. Current estimates are 11-19 inches, but that's wafflable.
@MattE.Эллен Who knew so many to the manner born were to the manor borne?
Hm, and then 4–8" more come Wednesday and Thursday. I’m afraid, @Rob, that it seems to be coming in waves every few days.
@Mitch No no, yards are where you play croquet. Rooves are where lisping dogs hang out. But anyway, stop misbuilding your misbuildings with concave rooves: rooves should be pointy and steep, with sheet metal on them so that the angel dandruff can slip off conveniently.
Same street, other side:
You don’t see people up there yonder shovelling off yards of snow, now do you?
Those rooves will not collapse from snow.
