Are morphemes and syllables somewhat related?
Only coincidentally.
Basically, no.
crl
crl
ah, ok
was discovering the meaning of
A portmanteau (/pɔrtˈmæntoʊ/, /ˌpɔrtmænˈtoʊ/; plural portmanteaus or portmanteaux /-ˈtoʊz/) or portmanteau word is a linguistic blend of words, in which parts of multiple words, or their phones (sounds), and their meanings are combined into a new word. Originally, the word "portmanteau" refers to a suitcase that opens into two equal sections. A portmanteau word fuses both the sounds and the meanings of its components, as in smog, coined by blending smoke and fog, or motel, from motor and hotel. In linguistics, a portmanteau is defined as a single morph which represents two or more morphemes. The...
Funny word, that.
Especially to a Frenchman.
crl
crl
I was confusing it with porte-manteau :)
yes totally

Anyone care to check this answer to see if the kanji is displayed right? Kanji shows as a bunch of boxes on my screen.
Sweet, I'll take that as a yes. Thanks @Cerberus
@Mazura Only you know whether that is a yes!
Well, at all is good enough, I don't know either.
OK I have no idea what it's supposed to look like either.
But at least I have no blocks.
01:49
Good to know that the text is preserved while copying, even if it isn't displayed right.
Perhaps you need to install a Kanji font?
I know installing more fonts fixed all my block issues.
02:09
I looked into it before, my OS is unsupported. My good CPU is basically air-gaped. This one gets reinstalled frequently, with an automated install disk. 7 takes too long and I don't have an auto install disk for it (yet), nor exists all the drivers I'd need. 'sides, half the programs I run, won't on x64. If only all manufacturers took a page from Sony: backwards compatibility is of the utmost importance.
02:22
I agree.
Then what OS are you using?
I'd prefer not to say, with all you CPU Xperts here ;p
03:18
@Mazura Umm what does that mean?
I am the opposite of a CPU expert.
I am on XP.
They tell me it's vulnerable these days. Meh, I still like my XP. - SE is prob the last place you want to advertise running XP ;)
Oh, he has been lampooned for his affinity to XP, to be sure.

@crl There are languages where morphemes tend to be one syllable each, and in those languages the two tend to correspond.
Anonymous
@Cerberus The Chinese characters look correct! :-)
crl
crl
08:49
@snailboat ah thanks, I guess Spanish is a maybe one, it's kinda simple syllable-wise 'va-mos a la far-ma-cia con to-dos (< s is a morpheme?) los pa-que-tes'
Anonymous
It's been a long time since I studied Spanish and I don't really want to try to divide your example up into morphemes, but I think there are probably lots of morphemes boundaries in Spanish that cross syllable boundaries. How would you divide up habl-amos, for example?
Anonymous
I was thinking of Chinese languages when I made my comment, by the way.

ok snail ___^
oh I understand better now what's a morpheme, it's a 'root' of the word, already knew similar things like word stemming for full-text search in databases
how's the scraps?
from the bike fall
crl
crl
ah that, getting better, scabs are slowly going away
good :-)
crl

my neighbour proposed me his old bike, he never used it, brand is 'Personal' @Robusto
the large crank is ... large, not sure I'll ever use it, to big even on flat road I guess
but first thing to do is to get new tyres (those one are dry and destoryed by time), I suck at this, he explained me those are 'full' tyres (tyre+air chamber) and you have to somewhat put glue on it, wait, then stick it to the wheel, then inflate and wish it works :)
I don't have any experience with that brand, but from looking at it I'd say it's fairly old. Steel frame, 10- or 12-speed (not sure because photo is blurry). Probably goes around 10 kilos? No index shifting (shift levers on down tubes, which is good).
@crl Yeah, that's an older style. Was going to mention that as well.
Looks like a bike from the '80s, all in all. How much does he want for it?
crl
crl
14:02
I don't mind the old style, with speed-switch on the frame, fun!
@Robusto not much ~70€ and it cost an arm back at that time
@Robusto no it's amazingly light, probably 8kg
yea only 2 * 5 speeds !
Is it Reynolds steel throughout?
Double-butted tubes, forks and stays?
That's a lot like my old Trek from 1981.
crl
crl
given than one crank is too large, I'm left with 5, but I'll try and see, I'm not using speeds a lot anyway
Well, I used the Trek for a long time after moving out here, and I have to say it sucks on hills. You can probably get a decent crank set with a lower high. And probably put a 7-gear cassette on the back.
crl
crl
those are tubeless tyres too (called 'boyaux' in French)? you have that too?
No, I opted for normal tubed tires because I needed a heavy-duty wheel on back due to all the potholes in Chicago when I was there.
The main question is, does the bike fit your body?
Did you ride it at all?
crl
crl
14:08
ever put tubeless tyres yourself?
not yet
@crl I did back in the day. Got real tired of that.
crl
crl
@Robusto yes same size as my current bike, so perfect
Then it's not a problem. The price is right if you want to take on the project of fixing it up.
crl
crl
tubeless are 17€ each decathlon.fr/boyau-rally-noir-700x23-id_8328782.html, I won't want to burst the tyres then..
Especially if it has Reynolds 531 chrome-moly tubing it would be a steal.
You'll really need to replace the crank to make it useful in your area, I'd expect. And the rear cassette, which may even need replacing at this point due to age.
crl
crl
14:12
yeah
That's where the expense is in this project.
crl
crl
ok, tyres + cassette
is it possible to put normal tyres like yours?
without having to change the whole wheel
No.
Gotta change the wheel.
crl
crl
ok, btw did this 20 times this morning, knees are not especially hurting
That's probably $150 for each wheel.
If you're handy and you want to invest in some equipment you could learn to build your own wheels cheaper.
Every cyclist should have a truing stand, btw. Word to the wise.
crl
crl
14:15
cough 136€, well normal
Well, you're still under €500 for the whole bike once you're all in.
crl
crl
yea, it's ok if he's comfortable (<500€ is what I targeted anyway with this kind of bike decathlon.fr/btwin-velo-route-triban-520-fb-id_8322799.html)
Me, I would want to put indexed shifters on it as well, and all that. All told I am personally probably going to spend about $1000 fixing up my old Trek once we move.
crl
crl
hehe, I wouldn't need it, I really don't change too much speeds, I just pray for never 'bursting'/deflating the tyres (which is the word for 'crever un pneu'?)
do you guys do any strength training for biking?
crl
crl
14:26
biking does strenghten, more or less, but I don't want muscles :)
it will help you go faster, no?
crl
crl
I don't really aim at going fast, just going at my pace uphill, that's all what I love
@skillpatrol Not necessarily. You don't want to build bulk, because cycling is all about the strength-to-weight ratio.
I'm at a disadvantage already because I'm tall with a muscular build. The Tour cyclists are usually smaller and with slender builds.
crl
crl
how tall? (I'm 6' / 1.84m)
14:34
I think you mean 6' . . . :-)
6" is six inches.
crl
crl
Americans.. with their units :)
6' is 6 minutes here :)
french.. with their tour :D
@crl I'm a little taller than you, but I weigh around 85 kilos (190 lbs).
Pro cyclists are usually 65-75 kilos.
crl
crl
hehe, you've a normal weight though, I'm a bit naturally skinny (thin bones)
That will help you.
It's all about not dragging extra weight up the hills.
14:38
I guess the hills are a built-in strength trainer
Can be.
You never want to bulk up like a weight lifter. I could probably beat most weight lifters going uphill on a bike, even though they're much stronger in the legs than I am, because they usually weigh > 25% more than I do. They would tire more quickly because their muscles are built for short, intense bursts of energy, not long endurance tests.
@crl That too. Just think of it like this: minutes/feet, seconds/inches.
[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive body detected: Do vulgarity and linguistic flexibility actually correlate? by dakab on english.stackexchange.com
I was in favour of stripping Armstrong of his "accomplishments" in the Tour.
His life story is amazing.
@crl: How do the French view the Tour during the Armstrong years? Some here have said all the Tour wins from 1990 to 2010 should be vacated because of the rampant doping and other violations. It's felt that everyone was doing it.
crl
crl
@Robusto many persons feel 'abused' like someone who would have lied, but personally I don't care, bike is bike with dope or not, slightly easier with dope, but well
reddit.com/r/cycling/comments/3r2yvg/… < what does it mean with "however I would bet you have standard clincher tires on that bike."?
I'd really have let Armstrong his victories, the second, third were certainly doped too
14:50
really?
crl
crl
but, right, his victories are not like Indurain's victories (less doped I imagine)
Indurain has/had a resting heart-rate of 28 bpm!
crl
crl
that's not too good though, when you get older, you may need a device to help your heart to continue to beat
amazing!
@crl Clincher tires are the tubed kind with tires that fit into the rim, as opposed to the ones like on your neighbor's bike.
@crl Damn, that is slow. Mine is like ~45-55 and I thought that was low.
crl
crl
14:53
@Robusto I just looked the tires again, they are like a torus, with a part for sticking on the wheel, and a part for the road
My friend who is even more of a cyclist than I am has a rate around 40 bpm.
@crl Yeah, you have to glue them to the rims.
They're slightly lighter than the clincher tires, IIRC.

Parece que mi corazon esta hoy un poco perezoso💓 Today my heart is a little bit lazy💓 http://t.co/La7NwIyYwH
@Robusto same-ish
In Armstrong's book he describes how he blew the cardio breath test meter off the scale!
I'm sure he did.
@crl I would translate that as "It seems [feels] like my heart is a little lazy today."
crl
crl
15:10
yes would say slightly differently: "it seems my heart is a bit lazy today"
oh shit, didn't see 'seems' on your sentence, I suck, ignore it ^

1 hour later…
17:08
@crl I wouldn't say 'lazy'. 'A lazy heart' just doesn't sound right. Maybe slow, tired, sluggish.

Hello
Would anyone have a preferable phrase to "He squirmed at the thought of..."?
There's a word I'm trying to grasp but I haven't quite found it yet
It's the sense of becoming smaller
or wait - shrivelled?
crl
crl
shrink? oh as an emotion, hm
yes I do implicate an emotion of sorts
crl
crl
In French we would say "il se fait tout petit à la pensée de ..." :)
Yes! I was trying to think of a french translation for that phrase!
Luck has fallen!
@crl Many thanks
crl
crl
hehe
sometimes it's more the idea of "hiding" oneself
18:37
@crl my french isn't great but: Est-ce qu'il y en a des autres phrases avec le même sens ?
It's incredible how an English conversation escalated to a French conversation on an English chat room ;)
crl
crl
yea, and there's a site I think, French Language
yet it does fit the description of the room as "incomprehensible"
Ja, und ich denke dass, war es ein Deutsches SE auch.
crl
crl
totally, and we often speak Spanish
Cerberus latin too, Terdon greek
18:42
واللغة العربية؟
and some arabic :P
19:21
@crl 時々、私たちはここにも日本語を話します。
@crl That doesn't mean the same thing as far as I know. To my understanding, the French phrase means he felt small/inadequate/nervous while he squirmed means he felt uncomfortable.
Ah, OK, @Leuchte said the sense of becoming smaller, in that case, squirmed is wrong, it doesn't have that connotation.
19:59
@Rob finally found a use of nit :)

what do you think?
I'd probably say: That's an application issue not a database one
