Hi @all

@RegDwighт I'm tempted to rollback to your version myself.
Perhaps I'll let the OP stop tinkering first.

10:50 AM
OK. Done. That's better.

user19161
@RegDwighт Could be two people editing at the same time.

user19161
There was once I did an edit, and I had no idea how I removed a tag and added another tag.

user19161
I then attributed it to a bug in the system to explain the error, because it would take too many keystrokes for me to change the tag in that way.

Q: Different users' edits are amalgamated

Andrew LeachRevision 3 of http://english.stackexchange.com/posts/83629/revisions is attributed to me. I edited the question to remove the code formatting and present the quote correctly, and did only that. Why have I so many pings today?

OK, OK, let me get some coffee.
No, pings actually. I only see one troll flag.

Hi, I need some assistance in learning english.
Can I ask a sentence to rephrase here?
I am beginner in english language
trying to learn it

Yes, certainly.

"Ok, I am leaving. I highly doubt my availability online at home."
Is it correct?

It is correct, but worded a little strangely.

Salut ! I have a small doubt .
" The choice of language and costumes was left at our discretion ." Is this sentence grammatically correct ?

More likely, it would be "I highly doubt I will be available online at home."

12:53 PM
" The choice of language and costumes were left at our discretion ." I find this one

@user1471 left to our discretion.
Otherwise, yes.

verbally pleasant =)

Thanks @KitFox

You're welcome. Did you know about the Learners site?

@KitFox Thanks =)

Ok, thank you very much.

You are welcome to ask here in our chat as well though.

Sure, I will try there.
Ok.

12:55 PM
They are just getting started, so there are fewer people in that chat room.
We often have a crowd in here, but it can be difficult for learners to keep up sometimes.

@tchrist I actually kind of like wantrepreneur.

I thought minergy described my job investment pretty well.

@KitFox It can be difficult for regulars to keep up!

Like pants, it is hard for me to keep up.

user19161
@kit What does your pic show?

In other news, Firefox 19 has a built-in PDF viewer.

Firefox continues to lead all browsers in leaking memory.
It is a time-honored tradition for them.

@Robusto Does it leak more than IE6?

1:09 PM
IE6 is dead. It doesn't leak anymore for that reason alone.

@Cerberus Clearly you must be suffering from weirdearcanalitis

@Robusto The corpse is alive and kicking on my work machine in front of me at the moment.

Hello @KitFox. You're looking nice. How nice it is that you're here. You're so nice.

@AndrewLeach No necrophilia in chat.
@AndrewLeach Also, my deepest sympathy for your loss.

@MattЭллен Sorry I took so long. Something really strange happened last night. Suddenly I wanted to yield to everyone.

1:15 PM
That is strange

@Robusto What makes you think I love it?

@MattЭллен It was as though my scheduling priority had been knocked down.

@AndrewLeach Who said anything about love?

"Necrophilia"

@KitFox you were doing things when people asked you to do them?

1:20 PM
@MattЭллен Um. I don't know how to answer that in a clever way.

@KitFox I think I'm missing a joke :D

@MattЭллен I am, according to our resident troll. I seek out sockpuppets.
@tchrist They get deleted when the account is removed.

Hm, they didn’t use to do it that way, but ok.

@AndrewLeach I see. sort of.

Looks like the fact: "English chat is always active" is very true - Completely agreed :D
@Cerberus is right ;-)

@KitFox At least it's not Dr Spock.

@KitFox he's emotionless. he doesn't realise he's hassling you. a swift kick to the nuts helps the logic along

I'd rather get hassled by a crackpot Dr Spock than by my childhood crush.
And revising the DB schema is not helping my mood.

@MattЭллен I hope you don't treat all Aspergers sufferers that way.

Hmm. Einstein was one and not the other.
George W Bush wore a suit most of the time.

Now he paints. Just like Hitler.

@AndrewLeach Most North Americans would not connect that with smart. :)

Hi @KitFox

I watched the series 3 finale the other day

2:10 PM
How are you?

I somehow managed to miss series 3 when it first came on air, and all subsequent times

Hi @MattЭллен

@MattЭллен Series three? Which one is that?
Hi @Sudhir.

How are you doing?

2:13 PM
Good morning

@KitFox with Martha as the companion (new who)
the christmas special with the master is with Donna, though, I think

@MattЭллен But you've seen all the rest? Just none with Martha?
@MattЭллен Yes.

Martha and Mickey are there, though

It was really good.

@KitFox yeah, well I've watched it on Love Film now

2:14 PM
@Sudhir Fine thanks, and you?
@MattЭллен I watched it on Netflix.

fine

Good morning @Mr.Shiny.

@KitFox: Being Db admin can you suggest which one is better in performance between Joins and subquery?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Hello

@Sudhir I'm not an admin, but I'd say it probably depends on the context. Usually a join is better.

2:15 PM
@Sudhir It will depend. Write your query and ask the database to explain its execution plan.
Often the DB rewrites subqueries into joins anyway

I use Mysql quite bit confused between these two.

In the old days Mysql didn't support subqueries and you had to rewrite it as a join instead

Oh. MySQL is a bit different.
Yeah, what @Mr.Shiny said.
It's still kind of clunky.
I haven't used it in a while though.

But now MYSQL supports.

2:17 PM
So guess what I'm doing @Mr.Shiny?

version control?
branching?
I bet it's branching your codebase

Thanks a lot @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇

so that you have two simultaneous dev paths
@Sudhir np

Um, maybe I should do that.

So you work on DB?

2:18 PM
I'm revising my DB schema.

@KitFox oh, fun.

cheers
And the permissions that I took six months to think through are all going to be revamped.

where everybody knows your name

The best part of that is managing the deployment of new code which uses the new schema and old code which uses the old schema.
and they're always glad you came

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇: Which diagram you prefer when you need to draw the schema for DB design?

2:20 PM
you want to be where you can see
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nah. I'm just going to demo the whole thing and start over.
I'm kidding of course.
troubles are always something
you want to go where everybody knows your name

@Sudhir Hm, I haven't diagramed in a while. I guess I prefer UML: I let the classes dictate the program structure which dictates the storage. It's usually pretty obvious how the DB should look. Maybe not for a third party who can't see the code, though.

I use Visual Paradigm.

I've used Visio to extract an E-R diagram from an existing DB before. That works pretty well.

How ER works?
Great!@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇

@Sudhir E-R is Entity-relation. It's a kind of diagram. Basically it shows your table structure and foreign keys.

2:26 PM
Also helps in deducing the relationships between the entities.

I am having a really hard time figuring out how to structure this hierarchy.

Can you suggest the differences ER and UML?

yawn Mornin'.

Morning @chatkillah.

Also, When to prefer over the other?

2:28 PM
@Sudhir UML models classes. E-R models tables.

labdien @chatkillah

I always prefer UML, usually.

You are such a classist.
I prefer E-R.

How you link your database tables to classes?

I prefer abstract impressionist

2:30 PM
@MattЭллен buenos dias.

Merci!

Let's see. More coffee or more thinking?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇: You're in office right now?

@Sudhir sorta. I work from home.

Lucky man
So your company outsources work?

2:33 PM
@Sudhir Usually the data objects each get their own tables. The data-model usually has only one representation that really makes sense in the DB. We don't have complex class hierarchies here that need storage in the DB, so the UML diagram is often very similar to the ER diagram.
@Sudhir No. We all work from home.

I need some help thinking. You guys up for it?

I can try!

To the jQuery room?

it's chilly there, bring a heater

Its very hot here! @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇

2:35 PM
@KitFox I was just making coffee.

30 C
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇: What's normal pay in Canada for a Software developer?

@Sudhir haha, it's like 30 F here
@Sudhir it varies. $30k to $120k depending on where you work and years of experience.

That's an awesome pay.
We here can't get even after having 15+ years experience.
For us, its very much.

well, the cost of living is pretty high here in comparison. And I don't know if those salaries will be maintainable in the long term. Lots of companies ship work overseas.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That's hard, working from home. Too many distractions. Like the kitchen. All that cake just waiting to be eaten.

2:40 PM
You know 1$ cost us ₹55.

@Mitch yeah seriously. On the other hand, the bathroom is always clean.

Now you can imagine.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇: How freshers get job there?

@Sudhir Send out resumes, I guess.

So what's your degree?
I think Canada has English as its official language. So you're native speaker of English?

@Sudhir English and French.

2:46 PM
Oh

I mean, I doubt Mr.Shiny is a native speaker of both, but they are both the official languages of Canada.

Okay
I always appreciate you guys for providing me prerequisite information.
I've one more doubt about Presidency in Canada and England.
Could you clarify my doubt?

I probably can't. Mr.Shiny probably can.

Canada and England don't have a president.

Then?

2:51 PM
Then?

England has a Queen. And so does Canada.

I mean then who presides there?
So Queen is same for both countries?

Yep, like when The Queen used to be Empress of India

Except that the Queen of the United Kingdom is legally distinct from the Queen of Canada.

ok

2:54 PM
The monarchy of Canada is the core of both Canada's federalism and its Westminster-style parliamentary democracy, being the foundation of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Canadian government and each provincial government. The monarchy has been headed since 6 February 1952 by Queen Elizabeth II, who as sovereign is shared equally with fifteen other countries within the Commonwealth of Nations, all being independent and the monarchy of each legally distinct. For Canada, the current monarch is officially titled Queen of Canada (), and she, her consort, and other ...

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 no comment. OK here's a comment...actually in the far past, I'd refer the work bathroom instead of the home one because...well... they had professionals cleaning it. I'm not a professional.
@AndrewLeach but they're the same person right?

Lawyers have cloned her

@AndrewLeach: Queen Elizabeth II is ruling all 15 countries?

Same person, but if the United Kingdom became a republic, she would still be Queen of Canada, of Australia and a number of other Realms and Territories.
@Sudhir Sixteen.

@Sudhir Yes. She "rules" all her countries as separate countries. Kinda like if you own two stores: you can own them both while they are managed separately by their staff.

2:56 PM
Canada's not a real country.
I mean, they have provinces, not states.

@KitFox Actually I am a native speaker of both languages.

what's up with that.

@Mitch :O

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 No way!

!!
snap!

2:57 PM
@Mitch It's the US that's not a real country. Each "state" is like its own mini-country. The US is like an early prototype of the EU.

So its same lady in all 16 countries?
@AndrewLeach?

@Sudhir The same queen? yes. She doesn't actually DO anything though, so she does that nothing for all the countries simultaneously.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yeah. exactly. we've supersized the legal entitiness of ou sub parts. so the enclosing country, the US, is even more of a country because each of it's subentities is like a small country.

@Sudhir Yes, same lady, but each country has her separately. It's just like the CEO of Acme Inc also being CEO of Cema Inc. Giving up one role wouldn't affect the other.

@Mitch No, that makes it LESS of a country, not more.

2:59 PM
I consider the Commonwealth of Former Soviet states to be the only attempt at competition on that front.

@AndrewLeach: UK is not republic?
as you said

Hmmm. The US is less of country and more of a post-apocalyptic waste land littered with roaming gangs of theives and murderers
