Ta DA!
Oh. Well, that's a bit awkward.

Who is?

Hail.
Not that awkward.
I mean, this room has seen worse.
Have you sent an e-mail to Mr Annoying?

Hello, my sweeties.
@Cerberus What?

@Gigili Oh, um... well, now, yes. What's up?

You were going to send B. an e-mail about the delays? Or was it a conversation?

12:31 AM
Uh, I did and got a reply. I got irritated just before I left earlier.

> Sorry not to email you last week, I was away, and meant to jot it down that night.
"jot it down" what a jerk.
Oops. Apologies.

@waiwai933 Umm, doesn't matter that much now. Is it possible to delete the picture I posted above?

@Gigili Yep. Done.

@waiwai933 Thanks a lot.

Why did you want that deleted @Gigili?
I thought you looked plenty hot.

@KitFox Bleh, as in, "I'm not even sending you a proper message, I'm just jotting something down haphazardly, because you're not important".
@KitFox Oh dear, did I miss a picture of Gigi?
I have seen one.
A while ago.

12:36 AM
@Cerberus No, I was just funnin' for the transcript readers.
Anybody want to join me for a Beefeater and tonic?
I've got fresh limes.

@KitFox Damn! Gigili posted a hot picture and I missed it?

Oh, what's a beefeater?
I am a beef eater.
@DavidWallace Hasn't she sent you others?

@DavidWallace I don't think it is possible for Gigili to post a not-hot picture.
@Cerberus A kind of gin.

Oh...

@Cerberus Has she?

12:37 AM
Nice.
@DavidWallace No, apparently, if you cannot confirm it...

How's NZ this morning?
I'm trying to decide if I should write or not.

@KitFox Cold.

I should probably write, but I am just a weensy bit knackered.
@DavidWallace Snow?

@KitFox I was afraid every man in the room will end the evening in love with me.
@DavidWallace Cold? Pah, I wish I was there.

@Gigili Well, all the women already are.

12:41 AM
Are you implying that G is in love with herself?

We should all be in love with ourselves.
We are lovely people.

@KitFox It's not snowing where I am. But the sun is shining and I still feel terribly cold.

blushes harder
Want to drink with me?

Can Cerberus and I sell tickets to whatever happens next?

I doubt it.

Especially if K gets G drunk!

I suppose you could try.

@DavidWallace In your dreams.

12:44 AM
I don't want to get her drunk.
That's no fun.
I just want to make her feel valued and special.

@Gigili You have no idea what I dream about!

@KitFox Oh? How?

Get your tickets here!
Kit and Gigi getting drunk together!

@Gigili Well, I would start by sitting close to you, gazing into your eyes, and listening to your troubles.

12:48 AM
@DavidWallace Brr, that's chilly.

It's my fault for choosing to have my lunch outside in the sun.

11 °C in mid winter?

Now. Writing? Or shall I stay and make things awkward?

votes for the latter

Maybe I can do both.

12:50 AM
Yes, the latter. The latter.

@Cerberus latter what?

@Gigili Well, then, sweetie. Tell me all your troubles.

Umm, let me think about it.

@DavidWallace Make things awkward!

The most important one is that it's 6 am and I am still here.

12:53 AM
Horrible! I just saw a man kick a pigeon!

So, I'll probably sleep till the afternoon again.

It's only 5.52 am!

Only.

5:22 I think

Huh?
I don't believe she lives in a twilight zone?
I know those exist.

12:55 AM
We've one just east of here.
@DavidWallace laughs

There's always central Australia.

pulls @Gigili close and puts her chin on Gigili's head
Have a rest, sweetie.

@KitFox Really? Where?

@KitFox Seriously not funny!

@Cerberus Um, Newfoundland, I think, has a half hour time difference from Atlantic.

@KitFox Oh, OK. Funny.

@KitFox and India, and Iran.

You think you're just stuck on an island, and then this...

@DavidWallace Well, not from Atlantic time.

Pedant!
See you all

12:58 AM
Hey, I'm off to bed.
Good night.

Good night!
So then I guess I am writing.

Bye!

1 hour later…
2:18 AM
Umm.
I was wondering why you left @Vit.
Yeah, I guessed as much. Windows updates and whatnot.
I really cannot sleep. Pft + pah.

Read a book in bed?

2:37 AM
Yeah, it's those updates.

What's the most famous singular gender-neutral pronoun?

Oh...about three pounds.

Singular they seems out of fashion.
Goodbye, Windows.

Q: Sizes, Kinds, Types Of Tires

Dandy--==--=-=,.=-,.=-,.=-.,=.,=- "There are many types of car tire." "There are many kinds of car tire." "There are many sizes of car tire." The first two sentences is good English? But for the third sentence, should "tire" be singular or plural? A size is not really a type or a kind. ...

He's back. Quick, nuke it.

2:52 AM
This is like, the third or so account he's used to post this

I'm actually about ready to send this person to prison.

I love your comment there

Q: The general 'it'

user23380What is the grammatical term for the 'it' in forms such as "It is raining" or "It won't matter", and is there a difference between the usage in those two examples?

Q: What does "it" refer to in "it's raining"?

KitI wanted to leave the question title as is so as not to take away from my amusement :). Anyway, It's raining. What is raining? Is it the sky? The clouds? The weather? The rain? What is "it"? Any historical insights on the statement?

Q: Whence the "it" in "I like it here"?

onomatomaniakWhat is the origin of the use of the object (it) in the following sentences, and what is its purpose? I like it here! and Did you like it there? In essence, the things we are saying we like are really here (this place) and there (that place) themselves - whence the insertion of the a...

Q: How to say such thing in english: 2^16

warl0ckHow to say this mathmetical function in english: 2^16 I know ^ means power, but how to say that as a whole ?

it feels somewhat lacking, but I can't put my finger on why
is it too localised?

@MattЭллен Boo!

morning @Jasper!
There once was a man from the sea
Who said, with considerable glee
"I've fish in my bucket
worth one whole gold ducat!"
It was clear he's as mad as can be.

Good call on the brown eye, Matt.
I guess only Bacon and Yoichi-san himself noticed that bit.

thanks. The power of pedantry implores me.

The power of reading questions.
It's quite unique.

user19161
9:42 AM
@RegDwightΒВB What brown eye?

The one that's being poken.
-4
A: What does “poke one in the eye” mean?

Bacon Bits"Poke in the brown eye" is slang for anal sex. 'Poke' is slang for sexual penetration, and 'brown eye' is slang for anus.

1
Q: What does "not an answer" mean?

Daniel δIn the post What does “poke one in the eye” mean?, Yoichi Oishi asks what the phrase means in this context: ‘It seems every step we take, it’s something just to poke us in the eye,’ a frustrated Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said at one point this week. One answer was (and t...

@MattЭллен I propose a new rule: if you can't spell "English", your question is automagically off-topic.

user19161
Oh yeah of course Yoichi asked about it. Reading comprehension guys!

Good rule. Needs a meta post, though

user19161
That is why I usually read a question 9000 times before answering.

@MattЭллен Yeah, would get shot down as rude or pointless by TPTB. Chat is where it's at.

user19161
9:47 AM
But I have not heard poke in brown eye till just now, amazing.

user19161
Then what is normal sex? Poke in black eye?

user19161
If nobody knows I am gonna post this on main!

user19161
@matt You should post that comment as an answer.

good idea.

user19161
Wow, Jin looks like Kitaro, lol!

10:05 AM
@JasperLoy there is no eye, it's just a poke
but if there were an eye, it would be pink

So in this compound there is a playground that was covered in a rather thick layer of sand. They had installed a new play structure, with slides and all. So far so good, even though I find this new play structure distasteful: the old wooden one was much more pleasing to the eye. But now they are laying asphalt around it, in the centre of sand. What the hell?!

although, pinkeye is a medical condition. so that would not be a good choice for slang

How is tarmac better than sand? Am I missing something? Isn't it more dangerous for the kids if they fall onto the ground from the structure?

in the UK, there is this black material in use in playgrounds that is a sort of foamy asphalt, which is nice and soft to land on. Nicer than sand, I think. Less chance of hidden sharp objects.

You still have such questions? When did you move to Russia, yesterday?
The only unlogical thing about them laying asphalt around the structure in the centre of sand is that I'd totally expect them to just steal the asphalt instead. The sand, too. And the structure.

10:11 AM
Heh.
Nope, not here. The owners here own the compound and the adjoining area cooperatively.

Well then I'd suppose it's ultimately the owners who are responsible for hiring morons vs. not morons.
Not that there isn't a shortage of not morons, but still.

More like the совет... I haven't been interested in keeping up-to-date on their BS
Guess I'll have to see the председатель about this, just out of curiosity.

The soviet is dead, long live the soviet!

Is the meaning of a word gen ref if the only place a satisfactory definition is found is at OED.com?

What up, peeps?

Hey @Robusto. You still in Manhattan?

Yup.

Enjoying your CMS training?

God, no.
As in any class, we move at the pace of the slowest members.

11:14 AM
ah, of course. No child left behind
Have they made content easier to manage?

Half the class knows more than the instructor, half knows NOTHING at all.

wow. that must be frustrating

Honestly, I believe my dev team could write a better CMS.

I guess the inventor writes it for themself and then has to figure out how to crowbar in features other people want. Things get messy

The one thing that's interesting is Apache Sling, but I could have learned that on my own.

@Robusto The phone is so small. Is there even space for tabs?

Or sometimes Content Management System.

I am back at my kiosk?

@Robusto pretty low key, other than that Nortonn S character. Carlo_r was having problems with "bridge ices before road", but that seems to have been resolved.

Thank god, huh?

@Robusto well, I was going for keyboard

Kitchen would be nicer.

11:58 AM
@Robusto indeed! we were fretting a while over that one

We should turn ELU into an ABC sitcom.
Unless that's already happened.

Q: "Above"/"below" before/after a noun

GnubieI have seen sentences similar to the following: (1) See the reference above. (2) See the reference below. And, (3) See the above reference. But not, (4) See the below reference. Are all these forms acceptable? Which is/are preferred in formal writing?

Oh come on. I turn my back on the site for just a couple minutes...
9
Q: Which is correct: "the below information" or "the information below"?

Dennis WilliamsonI frequently see statements that refer to something later in the text that use a phrase such as "the below information". Is it more correct instead to say "the information below" (or "the following information")?

12:15 PM
@MattЭллен That playground tarmac has been shown to not decrease the number of injuries because kids play more recklessly

so it would decrease the number of injuries if kids were sensible! You just need to adjust the statistics for the irresponsible nature of children, and things will be fine.

user19161
12:32 PM
@Gigili I saw that I missed something exciting here yesterday.

@JasperLoy Oh? I missed it too. What was it?

The picture? Yes, I did.

@kiamlaluno I don't think we are part of the problem the question describes. we talk about the validity of questions all the time

12:55 PM
@JasperLoy no, because no flirting in this room, duh.

plus we help people who come in and ask for it, which happens probably twice a week

@Manishearth well don't search @Kit's messages, then.

No, this room is fine :)

@RegDwightΒВB Hey! I resemble that remark!

12:56 PM
@MattЭллен Yes, but there is no PROGRAMMING discussion. ;)

@kiamlaluno OH! lol :D
@kiamlaluno actually...

Oh noes! English majors can't program!

Let's talk of a program to correct a sentence I write.

@kiamlaluno The programming discussion is here, duh.

Anyone happen to remember how I did that super simple zebra striping in jQuery? I hate it when I can't just copy paste from something else I used to have. I probably ought to have a notebook with these things.

Now, that is is really an hard task!

yes, yes it is.
