A: What is the origin of "moral support"?

MatthewThis is a very interesting question. One that I just proposed to myself. It would seem that the words would had to have been linked at some time in the past because they are practically the same word, and the two words seem to be linked phenomenologically. What exactly is the difference between a...

Hello people.
Good that Rob is making progress.

user19161
2:08 AM
@Cerberus Of course. Thanks to your prayers.

No doubt.

2:38 AM
sigh

Hi everyone.

I had an eight hour shift today.
How are you, @MrS?

Why not use Caps-lock instead?
I'm working. so that's now I am. 10:30pm saturday night.

groans
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Why are you working?
That's a heck of a lot of overtime.

2:41 AM
My manager called, he was just leaving a movie theatre, and said he got a text message from HIS boss that was a few hours old complaining about some unspecified problem with our website. So I'm logging on, trying to figure out what is or isn't happening.
It's not a lot of overtime, I just started. But it's annoying anyway.

Why did you do it?

Well, start working on the website. It's a) an ungoshly hour and b) the weekend.
Of course, I would.

because I was told to

Your manager told you to? At 10:30 PM on a weekend?

2:45 AM
well, there might be a serious problem with the website

That's true.
I would feel obliged to help.

It's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack though.
All I know is "there's not as many people joining/paying as we expect"

That's pretty vague.

it could be anything

Well, yeah.

2:49 AM
I suspect some marketing campaign ended the other day and someone forgot to start a new one.

Does the site usually get heavy traffic?

well, not like Facebook does
and a lot of the traffic is ad-generated
At least, a lot of the traffic that matters.
it makes no difference if people are coming back, what matters is if they're joining and paying. :)
The traffic for the site seems to be normal for this time of day

Joining? Is it a social networking site?

dating website

Ah, that makes sense too.
More so, actually, since you said paying.

I need 2k more to become a "trusted user" of ELU!

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I hope you have fun on Sunday then.

@ClarkKent Some people trust you already.

user19161
@DavidWallace Like Lois Lane!

user19161
Kris calls Barrie his "old friend" in the comments. I wonder if he meant in real life.

You mean, they know each other? Or do you think he's just saying Barrie's old?

user19161
8:39 AM
@DavidWallace Ah, that is another possibility!

Oh, I see the comment that you mean. The response to my shit-stirring.

user19161
I don't visit meta to see all the various site "policies" now. And different people have different opinions and judgements too. So I just answer or comment according to my gut feelings.

user19161
I see the purpose of such meta posts as raising awareness of such issues, that's all.

@ClarkKent Me too, which is why Kris' remark irked me.

user19161
@DavidWallace Would you say Kris' or Kris's?

8:44 AM
Either, depending on my mood. I believe both are correct.

user19161
Guides tell me both are possible. It depends on how you want to pronounce it.

8:57 AM
Compared to the other SE sites, ELU seems to be about the bitchiest one; and also one of the more pointless.

user19161
9:43 AM
@mahnax Boo!

user19161
I just realized that maybe Carlo is Lewis Carroll.

11:34 AM
Is this correct? "This is where you and I part ways" meaning: This is the point where you and I go on separate ways

11:45 AM
@Meysamرهادربند Yes, correct!

Hi @DavidWallace

Hello Meysam.

Nothing much. I think I was just about to shut down my computer and go to bed.
What have you been up to lately?

Nothing. Leaving?

11:53 AM
You must have been up to something!

Hmm... going to gym and swimming maybe!

I have to sort out some electricians in the morning. They have been re-wiring my house, but they've put far too many sockets on one circuit, and now the fridge dies every time I use the toaster.

I will be in the pool in 2 hours. yaaaaay!

@Meysamرهادربند Aha, are you some kind of health nut?

@DavidWallace No, I just need that sort of activity otherwise I will go nuts
I love being in water
@DavidWallace So, they didn't know how to do their job?

11:55 AM
@Meysamرهادربند It looks that way; very disappointing. Anyway, it means I'm going to go to bed now, since it's almost midnight. I'll talk to you another time.

Allright, sweat dreams :)
*sweet
@Cerberus Is there any usage for "Bicycle"? As far as I know, most people tend to say "Bike"
I know some Chinese who have never heard "Bicycle"

@Meysamرهادربند Bicycle is a bit more formal.

@Meysamرهادربند They're interchangeable; but many people like saving time.
Listen to the song "Bicycle Race" by Queen some time.

You are more likely to see bicycle written, and I'm sure plenty of people say it.
@DavidWallace Ah, yes, of course!

Anyway, good night all.

12:00 PM
Nite!

@DavidWallace And listen to: "Nine Million Bicycles" by Katie Melua

user19161
So it turns out that I can set google chrome to always launch in incognito mode and always authorize plugins by using the flags --incognito and --always-authorize-plugins. Maybe I will switch to it.

user19161
@DavidWallace Good night!

user19161
The problem is that using incognito mode disables plugins but using both flags solves the problem. QED.

So what does QED mean exactly?
Can it be used in any sentence whatsoever?

user19161
12:12 PM
@Cerberus You mean my QED?

Of course.
Trying to unravel the mysteries of Jasperese.

user19161
@Cerberus I mean something like "case closed" or "problem solved".

Ah.

user19161
Of course I know it really means "as was to be demonstrated".

So you say the same thing twice, "...using both flags solves the problem. Problem solved."

user19161
12:14 PM
Yes. To add some vigour to it.

user19161
You must imagine me banging the table as I say QED.

Eh ah.

user19161
Wait. Do you see "enable desktop notification" on the bottom right?

user19161
I think it is a new chat feature.

I started Chrome, but I see absolutely nothing on the bottom right.

user19161
12:18 PM
Oh maybe it is my incognito mode, but I doubt it.

user19161
I never saw it in Firefox.

user19161
It's after the last starred message on the star wall.

Oh, on this page?

user19161
Yes, right here where you and I are.

user19161
In this room, right now.

12:22 PM
I cannot log in on Chrome.
It just doesn't work.

user19161
So do you think Lewis is Carlo? I have a feeling it is so.

user19161
Maybe that is why Lewis has been suspended for rule violations.

Eh hmm...could be?
I didn't know Lewis was suspended.

user19161
I saw he was at rep 1 earlier on.

user19161
Carlo has also been suspended to cool down. Maybe he created another account then.

12:27 PM
Hmm what did he do?

user19161
I don't know, maybe some comments were overboard.

12:39 PM
what's an adjective for an approach that yields greater performance?

Can you give us a sentence?
You could use "more powerful", "more effective"...

@Cerberus "more efficient" was the word I was looking for, thanks :)

OK.

user19161
1:09 PM
I just came to say that the google chrome incognito mode is not incognito at all. It still saves history. Although it does not save sites you type into the address bar, it still saves those links you click on. Major flaw!

user19161
Maybe I will email them to tell them. This is very disappointing...

user19161
Did I miss something obvious here?

user19161
Hey, it works now again. Maybe that was another one of the random computer errors. I remember I did close all chrome windows, hmm. But I'm glad it works again.

1:25 PM
@ClarkKent Seriously??
That is weird.
Isn't it rather that it saves history during the incognito session, then deletes it once you end the session?
That's how Firefox works.

user19161
@Cerberus Well, you still can navigate back to the pages you have visited. But now it does not show those pages under the history page even though they still show up when you click and hold on the back button. Of course after closing nothing shows anymore. But the error just now was that they showed even after closing all windows.

user19161
This is getting complicated!

user19161
Sometimes these random computer errors make me feel like someone has hacked into my system!

@ClarkKent Even after closing all windows??
That really shouldn't happen.

user19161
@Cerberus Well, it seems OK now. Maybe it was an error on my part somewhere.

1:37 PM
Hmm.

user19161
Ah I think the "enable desktop notification" is a chrome thing. I see it in my gmail too.

user19161

Q: "By now" vs "now"

thg435 The case is closed by now. The case is closed now. What exactly is the difference between the two?

user19161
This question is interesting. I was trying to think of an example and gedgar finally came up with it so Christi's answer is a little incomplete.

user19161
OK I declare I will switch to chrome from FF. QED.

Very good.

2 hours later…
user19161
3:19 PM
I have figured out why the history was saved in incognito mode just now.

user19161
When I open chrome in incognito mode and go to settings, then type an address into the address bar from the settings page, it goes to non-incognito mode. This solves the mystery.

user19161
Also, I discovered that even when we go to about:plugins and allow always a particular plugin, the browser still asks for permission so one needs to use the --always-authorize-plugins flag still.

user19161
There there, google should pay me a million bucks for discovering these two bugs!

user19161
I also made the stunning discovery that the gnash plugin actually works in place of flash, at least for a couple of videos. We'll see.

Hello Jasper.

user19161
3:23 PM
@Mahnax Hello! See my three discoveries above.

@ClarkKent Yes, I have.
Oh dear, I need to eat.

user19161
@Mahnax OK enjoy!

What a bother. I'll be back in awhile!

3:36 PM
Well, that was enjoyable.

1 hour later…
4:40 PM
@ClarkKent I don't see it either

4 hours later…
8:16 PM
@ClarkKent Of course, "Carrol" is an anagram of Carlo R. QED.

Hello.

Hi. Sorry, I can't talk for long. I'm about to abuse some electricians, but they're late showing up at my house; which will make me late for work.

Gah, darned electricians.
My grandfather was an electrician.

While installing one power point, they inadvertently cut my phone cable. Do I really want the sort of electricians who inadvertently cut cables to be installing wiring in my house?

No, no you don't. Are you getting rid of them?

8:24 PM
The thing is, they've almost finished the job. So they will have the opportunity to finish, but they will have to satisfy me that their work is safe. Even if that means taking me up into our attic and showing me everything that they've done.

Well, fair enough, I suppose.

I think they've just arrived. See you later.

Goodbye.
