12:55 AM
Wow, been quite some time since I answered anything on the main site.

6 hours later…
6:31 AM
Eight messages in my SE inbox, and seven of them were for David Wheeler. Nobody loves me at all.
and one more for Wheeler while I was typing that last comment.
Answering a thread from about 20 hours ago, I've always thought that the adjective was always "blond"; but "blond" could also be used as a noun meaning "blond man", and "blonde" is a noun meaning "blond woman". But maybe that's just how we use these words in New Zealand.

X and Y are interchangeable / X and Y are exchangeable /// Does exchangeable really fit in that context? From this page it sounds to me that exchangeable is used when there is no substiantal loss, but that wouldn't work for words. What do you guys think about that?

"Interchangeable" means you can swap them for each other.
"Exchangeable" means you can take them back to the shop and swap them for something entirely different.

Em1
7:36 AM
Yes, ok. I sometimes read in questions or answers word A and word B are exchangeable. Following your explanation, that's wrong?

user19161
7:51 AM
@Em1 One should write interchangeable in such cases.

@Em1 Umm, "wrong" might be an overstatement. But "interchangeable" is definitely better.
Hi Jasper.

user19161
@DavidWallace Hi. Yeah it's also not clear what they can be exchanged for, but it is clear if we say two things can be interchanged.

Em1
Thanks @JasperLoy and @DavidWallace

user19161
@DavidWallace They should improve the pinging specifications.

Tell me about it. If I'm online when it happens, I sometimes drop in and point it out. But eight times in a day!

user19161
7:59 AM
@DavidWallace They love you!

It should favour whoever is in there, or was in there most recently. I think it goes for whoever was in the room first. I seem to be the first David ever to go to the math.SE room.
So (at)Dav gets me, so does (at)David or (at)DavidW. And since DavidWheeler's in there a lot, all three of these get used a lot.

1 hour later…
9:17 AM
@Reg How many points do they lose when I win 28, I wonder…

Who? Where?

In the Arena. Also, they have pushed a new update about 13 hours ago. The new Piston grindfest is M169.

Oh.
I don't think they made changes to how many points one loses. Only to how many you can win.
At least that's how I read the announcement.

I managed to lose 0 points twice.

Why are you doing the Arena anyway?
I see it now goes to 6000, but what's the reward?

9:23 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 It goes to 7500 IIRC. Platinum II and Platinum III. I am trying to figure out whether winning in the Arena gives you any crafting resources.
Plus, there are two mediocre reward cards.
I can see Thunder Crag being sometimes useful in missions with his Burst 3.

0, 26, 9 here.

And you need a whopping 25 Artemis Generators for Heracles. Sigh.

Why is Heracles good, again?

4 attack with Swipe and Evade on a 1-delay card with a Rally Raider 1 commander like Svetlana, which also has Protect Raider 1.
Then add Mobile Base and Mortar Bunker into the mix.
And a Pantheon. Or just Fortified Cannons.

damn it. I always for get to carry the one to Albuquerque

Dr. Albernquerque?

yeah, him, he needs his ones

@Vitaly Yeah, this game is getting to be even more about grinding. I'm not sure how long I'm going to last. It's getting hard to be a dilettante and, as I've said before, I do have a life of sorts.

Well as I mentioned before, I'm taking a break at level 150, or faction level 12, whichever comes first.

I'm not sure I will ever reach 100. It's getting too boring.

Q: "...who didn't have a..." vs "...without a..."

janoChenI titled a short story "The Girl without a Soul". But recently I've been thinking on naming it "The Girl who didn't have a Soul." Do they mean exactly the same? Which sounds better as a name for a short story?

Why is this even open? Also, the accepted answer is totally wrong.

10:06 AM
I was thinking about joining The Retirement Home one day. Their leader personally invited me at one point. I was level 50 back then. These days their requirements are level 70 and that you fight once a week to prove you're still alive.

Hahaha.

Well you laugh. But they've been rising at 20 FP/day for months.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Your grandchildren won't visit you. Wait, you'll see.

A: "...who didn't have a..." vs "...without a..."

HevGood answer, also 'The Girl Without A Soul' has a lovely rythmn

I'm confused. Is he calling his own answer good?
Either way that would be a great idea.

I think he's calling the question a good answer

10:11 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Welcome to ELU Lite.

Henceforth I shall prefix all my answers with "Good answer:".

@RegDwightѬſ道 We see the Greek tragedy playing out here. His hubris cost him two downvotes.

@RegDwightѬſ道 And what happens to our faction then? If you stop carrying out your duties as a leader, I'm joining one of the top factions just to get those rewards. And then possibly one of the retirement factions, yeah.

Well obviously our faction will have to be killed with fire.

10:13 AM
@Vitaly Well, in that case I definitely will simply quit the game. It's played out anyway, and you both know it.

I'm not letting people feed off our corpse.

but your corpse would be so tasty!
deep fried

I know. One reason more to be mean and not let anyone taste it.

Can factions get cremated? I mean, in the literal sense?

Never. Cryonics is the way to go.

10:15 AM
I saw some factions getting creampied.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Eeeuuwwww. I can't unsee that image.

@RegDwightѬſ道 He meant Bidella's answer.

I know. I was being funneh again.

I can just never tell.

@RegDwightѬſ道 If we do need late, bad answers that are pale imitations of the real thing, I think we should introduce a Necrophilia badge.

Oh we do have that.

Wie?

11:06 AM
I thought that was only for good late answers

Except for some stupid reason it's called Necromancer and requires five upvotes. Kinda counterproductive, really.

Not the same thing at all, really.

Yeah, they screwed it up.

so would necrophile be a gold badge you can be awarded many times?

Necromancer is about resurrection; Necrophilia would be about trying to screw a corpse.

11:09 AM
@MattЭллен I think Necrophile should be a diamond badge that is awarded immediately, but retracted as soon as your answer gets an upvote.

We also need neg badges: lumps of coal, steaming piles of feces, rotten tomatoes, that sort of thing.

"You have answered 15 questions with a total score of -45 or less"
maybe it would come with a suspension

You should only get suspended from the activity that caused you to get the anti-badge. So if you get the "lots of stupid answers" anti-badge, you could get suspended from answering, but still be able to ask questions. And vice versa.

I dunno. If you can't figure out how to ask good questions, that's not exactly a sign you should be allowed into the business of posting answers.
The other direction might or might not work.

Not necessarily. You might be really smart, and know lots of stuff that's worth sharing, but be bad at asking questions. Or you might be really ignorant and post lots of terrible answers, in which case one way to become wiser would be by asking questions.

11:23 AM
Well I dunno. If you are really smart but are bad at asking questions, what does that mean, exactly? That you can't express yourself clearly. That won't go away if you stop asking and start answering.
At any rate I can't think of a single contributor who used to ask rubbish questions but then went on to provide quality answers.

Maybe you just can't think of anything worth asking.
Like me. Have a look at some of the questions I've asked.

Aha! But that's a different thing entirely.
I asked tons of basic stuff during the beta, too. Many people did that. To populate the site.

Q: Is 0.1 million singular or plural?

DerekIs 0.1 million singular or plural? Since 0.1 is smaller than 1, shouldn't it be singular? E.g: This: 0.1 million people is above the age of 65. or: 0.1 million people are above the age of 65. <--This sounds right, but is it singular?

Don't we have a canonical answer for this kind of question yet?

We do.
Except this question is completely different.
It has nothing whatsoever to do with 0.1.

Caught you with my doorstop answer.

11:27 AM
1 in 10 million

Ha
But again, that's not the question here, either.

no, I know :D

@RegDwightѬſ道 OK, it's just stupid then. How would you ever say "people is"?

You would not. And that's the point.

20 hours ago, by Matt Эллен
the fact that he writes "1 in 10 children" not "1 in 10 child" makes it obvious what verb will be used
but should the question be closed as a dupe of the one that asks about plural nouns?

For all I care it's a NARQ.

It should be closed because it is idiotic.

Q: Should we use plural or singular for a fraction of a mile?

grokusI have seen people say both 0.25 mile and 0.25 miles. Should we use plural or singular for a fraction of a mile?

The question of whether 0.1 is singular has been answered elsewhere; but that is irrelevant because "million" is always singular in numbers (which is being answered in another question as we speak); and that, in turn, is irrelevant because he's using "people". And people just are.
@MattЭллен Yes, that's the first one I'm talking about.

11:31 AM
Henceforth let us migrate all number questions to Math.SE.

This is the second one.

@DavidWallace well, to prove it to yourself maybe ;)

@MattЭллен I don't need to prove it to myself. I have seen it unambiguously.
However, I suppose I could be hallucinating. I can't believe nobody else sees this.

I don't see anything like it either.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Come on, Reg, there's an answer that specifically mentions it.

A: The meaning and origin of "hedge your bets"

KitFoxTo "hedge your bets" means to reduce or mitigate your risk. According to Etymology Online, this usage of hedge has been around since the 1600s. From this page, the origin of the phrase comes from an actual hedge or plantings that act as a fence to enclose a piece of land. A hedge delimits an ar...

I don't think the "hedging" tag was originally on the question.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Wrongfully? Or just wrongly?

12:14 PM
@DavidWallace ah good point.

@DavidWallace It wasn't. The guy who answered "hedge" tagged it that way.

Actually Kit's swapping the sentences around makes it even more confusing.

My alleged foxy hallucinations are some kind of interlacing issue. Like the fox is drawn large and low-res. Then a higher resolution comes along, and the fuzzy edges disappear, making the fox physically smaller, but better looking.

@JSBᾶngs It's not things. Why are you against it?

it's totally a thing! it's definitely not stuff

12:37 PM
No, I got a message that I didn't understand. I tried to paste it underneath the "Before I go to sleep" remark, but I pressed ENTER instead, realised I'd lost it out of my clipboard, so I tried again. When I pasted it the second time, I could see the whole message which I couldn't earlier and which now makes sense.

@DavidWallace at least you triggered an interesting nonsense conversation

@JSBᾶngs Well, true, it's not really stuff. But is it a thing? There's the rub.

The message was

Hmm. If I am using nested master pages, and I want to add some javascript to the head content on the topmost master, anybody know how to do that?

@KitFox at it to the template of the topmost master page

@JSBᾶngs Even if I only use it on this one page?
And Reg, which war should I fight?

@KitFox eh, it's not hurting anyone if it sits there uselessly on all of the other pages

Good night again.

12:42 PM
(unless it does something nasty everywhere except that one page)

I'm suspicious because it's a Google package.

in case it does do something nasty, you can probably include logic to discover whether you want that bit of javascript or not

It's against my better judgment to use it in the first place.

@KitFox the active one pls.

Even though we are 1K up?
Did I mention that my project lead wants to use Google motion charts and make sure the site plays nicely with iPads?

12:44 PM
what are Google motion charts?

@KitFox this is probably not too difficult
i imagine the googlebits are ipad-friendly

@MattЭллен Flash-based animated charts that make pretty lights for stupid people.
@JSBᾶngs Except for the Flash part.

I see!

So actually useless on the iPad.

I think Highcharts are all javascript

12:46 PM
@KitFox THERE'S FLASH IN THE GOOGLEBITS?
i'm disappointed

Well, the API we have is Flash-based, yes.

they might as well just use silverlight, then. better API than flash

I use highcharts and so they must be easy to use

I'll look into it when I get back to the charting part.
makes notes about charts

@JSBᾶngs Ah yes. The familiar tale of "this thing is better than that other thing, only, nobody has it installed".

12:48 PM
Turbo Pascal 5.5 is the best.

I feel very surly about motion charts in the first place.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 isn't it default on most windows machines these days?
true fact: i worked on SL 5

These teachers are barely literate, but look! the circles grow before your eyes!

@JSBᾶngs new machines, yes. Old machines, no. Non windows machines, no.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 how about "all machines that use netflix"? that's a pretty large number of machines
but it's probably a lot smaller in the segment that kit is targeting

12:50 PM
@JSBᾶngs just a couple million.
Nobody uses Netflix here.

in reality, i would expect any browsery thing that wants to be cross-platform to just use javascript
and the canvas element.

My point is just that no matter how nice Silverlight is, it is not as ubiquitous as Flash. Does it have a Mac client? There is, or was, a linux client but I'm not sure how well supported it is.

Can I get some agreement about how stupid motion charts are?

I'm fresh out of agreement. Ask again tomorrow.

@KitFox I have 4Kg of agreement right here

12:52 PM
scowls

@KitFox I'll agree. animation should serve a purpose. Either to demonstrate to the user that the computer is doing something, or to visualize data changes over time, or something like that.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 SL has been supported on Mac for years

well, I've not used Google motions charts, but if they're just charts that move about, I'm sure they're annoying

i myself wrote a non-trivial amount of Mac code for SL

@JSBᾶngs ok, that's good

12:53 PM
@KitFox stoopid motion charts

@MattЭллен They are canned and pretty inflexible displays of moving data. For instance, you can't alter the timeline increments; you must use real dates, and if you don't, they are still formatted as dates (so you get 1-jan-1900, etc).
@JSBᾶngs Thank you.

So it appears, from Microsoft's site, that Silverlight is supported on Windows and Mac. But that means no android and no ios and no linux. Flash can at least do two of those last three (but going forward they are dropping android and linux... sigh)

@MrShinyandNew安宇 on the other hand, there is moonlight for Linux

So soon Flash will have the same effective installed base as silverlight

It's ridiculous that I should be compelled to create these stupid pieces of crap just because my project lead is dry-humping Google on a regular basis.

12:55 PM

@MattЭллен how well does it work?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't know. :D

i love mono. i write things for mono all the timez

I have written some things for mono, but then we scrapped that part of the project

What is that? I've not heard of it.

12:57 PM
it is a .NET implementation for linux

it's quite spiffy

O_o

you can build stuff on linux and run it on windows (or mac, if the mono runtime is installed) w/ no changes

it's also the basis of a C# implementation for Android and iOS

I am excited at the mere thought.

12:58 PM
the only other way you can do that is if you used java, but then you'd have to use java

I have wistfully desired to switch over to linux at work, but it's just not practical.

Hey! I use Java every day! And I'm only 43% insane! twitch

i used to write java as my main language. but C# is just so much better
