user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Yes they need to learn to be cryptic!

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 It is general reference to me. I surely will do this means I surely will do this. QED.

Q: What's the meaning of "worth noting"?

IkbearI often encounter these words: worth noting, but don't know what's the meaning. Is it meaning that something important or important?

user19161
Nuke it!

Close, yes?

user19161
@Mahnax Yes!

5:13 AM
I already GR VTC'D.
I was the second one.

user19161
I was the first, I win!

Aww.
Well, second place isn't bad.

user19161
Daniel is rising rapidly to the top of the charts.

Yep.

user19161
He might end up in fourth place by the end of the year!

5:17 AM
His rep collection is impressive.
I don't answer much these days.

user19161
How is schoolwork?

Oh, it's okay.
I really don't like these labs.

user19161
Nvm, you are going to be a mathematician, no need to go to the labs!

Oh, but there is a need!

user19161
Well, only for now.

5:23 AM
Yes.
I want to keep my Biology mark high.
It's currently at 93%.
@Will How was your day?

user19161
@Mahnax I am trying to sleep at night instead of the day, hehe. I woke up at 8am today. Oh the photo was taken yesterday by my friend.

@WillHunting You look very nice in the photo.

user19161
@Mahnax You too!

@WillHunting Gosh, thanks.
A few of my scales are showing, though. blushes

user19161
@Mahnax But you are not a fish! Oh pythons have scales too!

5:31 AM
@WillHunting Yes!

5:48 AM
Hi!

How are you today??

6:12 AM
I read too quickly. I though for a moment you said "reproaching sobriety".

That, too.

user19161
@MattЭллен How was your Sat?

pretty good. hung out with friends and did consumerist stuff.
how was yours?

user19161
@MattЭллен I went to fly kites!

@WillHunting oh right! I think I read that. With one kite that was over 9000 times its own size

user19161
8:53 AM
@MattЭллен Well, it's true that there was one kite that was way larger than the others. And I was surprised to see that they could go so far. I could not even trace who was flying which!

Were you flying any?

user19161
I was just watching my friends fly mostly, hahaha.

Was it a special occasion?

Q: What is a word with two synonyms that are antonyms (other than cleave)

Hamlet D'ArcyMy wife read on a trivia website that there is only one word in the English language which has two synonyms that are antonyms. The word was cleave, which has the synonyms adhere and separate. I find this hard to believe given the large number of English words, and the large number of loan words...

Q: Can anyone provide me with a list of English words that are their own antonyms?

RegDwight Ѭſ道I am looking for a list of all English words that are their own antonyms. Off the top of my head, I can only think of "either", "fast", "to dust" and "to lease", but there must be dozens more. Can you provide a link to a comprehensive list, if such exists? Also, what are such words most commonly...

user19161
@MattЭллен I was editing this question when suddenly it got merged and I could not effect my edit, jinx!

user19161
@MattЭллен Nope, just the occasional gathering.

@WillHunting sounds like fun. I used to have a kite when I was a child, but the lines got tangled and I just got bored of it

Q: What is the standard way to answer a question that is asking for confirmation?

jordoexNow, this is something all native english speakers should have learned in grade school, but many non-native english speakers don't know how to answer a question unambiguously. What is being asked here?

user19161
Looks like the spider and the elepahnt will be retained for a while.

11:07 AM
Oh! I know what the SWR badge is!
@RegDwightѬſ道 as far as I can tell he wants to know how to answer a question that can be answered yes or no. Also, it seems to be a peeve

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 A question.

user19161
@MattЭллен He said he is annoyed with disrespect of the English language.

"How should one generally answer simple yes/no questions" is too broad.

user19161
For that I have to upvote his question.

The other question is too localized. Plus the information needed to answer it is not included. You have to click through to another site.

user19161
11:10 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Well, the answer is "yes, ..." or "no, ...".

@WillHunting I think you are not helping.
Mar 12 at 10:01, by RegDwight Ѭſ道
If you gonna upvote a question, at least fix the blatant misspellings.
Unclear questions that can't even spell "English" correctly are not to be upvoted.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 I noticed and reversed my upvote to a downvote.

user19161
Just to please you.

Q: Who had cancer?

user19358Read this sentence: Lindsey told Jessica that she had cancer. Who had cancer? Is there any rule in English to claim it definitely?

11:19 AM
I was too, then I got bored. I should do something with my day

user19161
That is why I have not posted an answer. A few possibilities come to mind but none are satisfactory.

user19161
@MattЭллен Do this: wait for the night.

well, I do that passively
I want to do something actively. I think I'll shave my stuble

user19161
Is it alright to use "former" and "latter" there?

user19161
@MattЭллен So no more beard?

user19161
11:21 AM
Is it alright to reuse their names there?

user19161
These are the two doubts.

@WillHunting lots of beard

user19161
@MattЭллен stubble

@Reg: Damn, 15 points. I had to switch to fight and it wasn't enough.

@Robusto I fired one last shot 17 seconds before the end. And won. But it didn't count, of course.

11:25 AM
Wasted a level-up. Wah.

Well that was the plan!

Then it worked!

Phanthastick!

I couldn't surge against those decks. Got nasty LtW every frickin' time.

Back on topic, I left a comment on that peeving question. Had to reword it many times so as not to sound like a total prick, but then kind of gave up.

Q: How to find a collective name for a description?

slashmaisI need to find a word (or two) that would have a reasonable close meaning to the description: "a collection of facts and arguments used to arrive at an explanation [of some (thing|concept|idea|...)]"More generally I would appreciate if someone can give leads to how to 'create' such collectives. I...

I don't think he understands what collective nouns are.

11:28 AM
@RegDwightѬſ道 I think it was a nice little salvo. And it's OK to peeve in comments.
Also, the question on SO that bothered him was dumb, but at least clear.

@RegDwightѬſ道 good work

Yeah. I am king at giving up.
Anyway. How do we reword this question here, so it makes sense?
Reverse dictionaries have nothing to do with collective nouns.

Sometimes they do.
But he's confusing "collection" and "collective" ...

Yes. And sometimes they are all about prepositions or expletives.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Fuck that.

11:32 AM
My main problem is that this question is two in one.

My main problem is that I don't feel like cleaning up someone else's mess before I've had my coffee.
I already tried in WMT and look how well that went.
Mahlzeit.

Good idea. Mahlzeit.

user19161
Anyway @matt I posted an answer there using "former" and "latter" which I suppose is the best option.

user19161
@reg I just realised there is a difference in closing a question as duplicate and merging it which only a mod can do. One can edit the former but not the latter!

user19161
But this is bad. What if the merged question needs to be edited?

user19161
11:41 AM
Does it mean only a mod can edit a merged question?

Oops that was left over from my last visit here.

user19161
@Skullpatrol I hope you are not going to talk about "trolling" again!

@WillHunting No, I'm still looking through the 66 definitions in the Urban Dictionary.

user19161
@Skullpatrol Don't take UD too seriously.

@WillHunting I don't but it's a start. Along with Wiki.
@WillHunting Do you have any suggestions?

user19161
11:54 AM
Wow, I am surprised that in Russian, "Lindsey told Jessica that she had cancer" is not ambiguous because "there's a rule that a pronoun should refer to the last noun in front of it"!

user19161
@Skullpatrol No, "trolling" is not a "serious" word to begin with!

@WillHunting Do you think it will make its way into the OED?

@WillHunting Wow really? Маша сказала Наташе, что у неё рак sounds ambiguous to me.

user19161
@Skullpatrol Maybe it already is, I am not an expert, so don't trust what I say!

user19161
@Vitaly I don't know, that's what the guy commented. You may counter-comment!

11:57 AM
@WillHunting Your guess is as good as mine ;-)

user19161
By the way he just changed his username to fronstan in that question.

@Vitaly Is this from the OED?

Yes, OED Online: oed.com/view/Entry/206615

@Vitaly Thank you, finally something concrete!

12:03 PM
@WillHunting I didn't know that.

So there's no rule to determine which noun the pronoun refers? For example, in Russian there's a rule that a pronoun should refer to the last noun in front of it. – FronSTAN 15 mins ago

user19161
12:05 PM
So who is the Russian expert here? See above.

user19161
Vitaly has disputed fronstan in chat.

He should dispute him on the main site, too.

Um, I have simply mentioned that
12 mins ago, by Vitaly
@WillHunting Wow really? Маша сказала Наташе, что у неё рак sounds ambiguous to me.

user19161
My intuition tells me such a rule is very unlikely to exist.

user19161
Maybe trg787 will drop in to enlighten us!

12:11 PM
I have commented.

user19161
I hope trg787 is in a better place now...

12:22 PM
So does anybody want to help me put the OED definition of "trolling" into common language?

uh, if it's in the OED it's already common

O i see
What don't you understand?

all them fancy highfalutin words ;-)

deliberately erroneous: something wrong or full of errors created on purpose

12:28 PM
Some other dictionaries list that sense, too. For example, Chambers (the 11th edition) has this: "intransitive verb To make a conscious attempt to provoke controversy or disagreement on the Internet", Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary says “a person who tries to cause problems on an Internet message board by posting messages that cause other people to argue, become angry, etc” for troll,
Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary says “to leave an insulting message on a part of the Internet for no reason”, and NOAD has "send (an e-mail message or posting on the Internet) intended to provoke a response from the reader by containing errors"

deliberately antagonistic: purposefully done in a way that causes others to get annoyed or angry
intentionally eliciting a hostile or corrective response: wanting to be told off/scolded/instulted or wanting to be corrected

12:47 PM
@Vitaly @Matt Thank you both for helping me clarify what this word means ;-)

12:58 PM
@MattЭллен Would you agree that trolling is fishing for a response by intentionally saying something incorrect?

user19161
@Skullpatrol You are still at this?

@WillHunting yes

user19161
@Skullpatrol The repeated mentioning of trolling does look a little like trolling itself!

@WillHunting nice try;-)

user19161
@Skullpatrol Also I have a feeling you are an elementary school student!

1:03 PM
@WillHunting another failed attempt
@WillHunting next?

user19161
@Skullpatrol No more guesses. Just replace that with middle school or high school. End of story.

@WillHunting Enough said to you Will ... I win

user19161
@Skullpatrol Oh I know, maybe kindergarten or nursery!

So... you ladies and gents not getting along?

@Skullpatrol incorrect or upsetting
sorry, I was eating lunch

1:12 PM
@MattЭллен No problem, I appreciate you helping me.

user19161
@skull Your flagging those messages made me change my mind about you.

user19161
I shan't help you anymore with your questions.

user19161
@Wipqozn I thought we were.

on the topic of those flags, there is an ignore user button for situations like this.
If you and a user aren't getting along, you should use "ignore user". Flags aren't intended to settle disputes between two users.

@MattЭллен Trolling is fishing for a response by intentionally saying something incorrect or upsetting.

1:16 PM
@Skullpatrol in most cases
but, as with the instance the other day:
Mar 20 at 16:14, by Robusto
@MattЭллен Stop trolling for used stars.
I wasn't saying anything incorrect or upsetting, just something for attention

@Wipqozn I am offended by being called a kindergarten student.

@Skullpatrol tough

@Fx That would be me, pal.

F'x
@Skullpatrol quick question: your profile says you are a maths.SE user, but I can't find you there; any idea why?

user19161
@Fx It's a bug. He deleted his account but still can chat.

user19161
1:23 PM
@skull One day you will look back and realize I am your greatest friend, not enemy.

user19161
But it is not this day.

@WillHunting No friend of mine tells me I belong in a kindergarten, pal.

user19161
@Skullpatrol You have no idea what I am thinking.

@WillHunting That is not my problem.
@WillHunting NEVER insult a person's age.
@WillHunting Mental or physical. "End of story," as you just said ;-)

user19161
@Wipqozn That is not what I believe in. If two people are not getting along they should talk about it, but that happens in an ideal world only.

user19161
1:33 PM
If we see what happens in a chat room, we can understand why there is so much conflict in the world.

F'x
@WillHunting if you want to spend time ironing out your differences in viewpoint, then I'd suggest you get a room

@MattЭллен How would you define trolling?

@WillHunting It doesn't look to me like you were making any attempt to work out your difference. You were just trying to annoy him.
Just because those flags were dismissed doesn't mean you're not at fault, it just means you don't deserve to be suspended.
and that the message isn't considered offensive.
Offensive flags don't mean "this user offended me!", it means something inappropriate was posted that needs to be removed.
Porn would be a good example.

@Wipqozn Thanks for the example.
@Fx Thanks for your suggestion.

1:49 PM
@Skullpatrol obnoxious, attention seeking behaviour that can (but doesn't have to) be detrimental to the flow of conversation
I am off! things to do.

@Vitaly How would you define trolling? my attempt was: Trolling is fishing for a response by intentionally saying something incorrect or upsetting.
Obnoxious, attention seeking behavior that may use incorrect or upsetting statements.

2:14 PM
Obnoxious, attention seeking behavior that may use incorrect or upsetting statements.

@Skullpatrol (disclaimer: I am not a native English speaker) First of all, I think that trolling has become a very vague word despite numerous attempts to artificially constrain its meaning to deliberately provoking controversy or disagreement. For example, if @Borror0 here were to visit Christianity.SE with the intention of spreading the good news that deities don't exist, they would still call that trolling, even though it's neither incorrect or inherently upsetting.
So if I were a lexicographer who studied the usage of that word in the wild, I'd go for something like “disrupting the smooth operation of a site by means of posting provocative statements”.

@Vitaly Thank you.

@Vitaly I would hone that down to "Trolling in the context of chat or forums means exhibiting persistent disruptive behavior."

user19161
@Vitaly Though I myself would not say we can prove they do not exist. I think we cannot prove that they exist, and we also cannot prove that they do not exist.

2:24 PM
@WillHunting It is sufficient that no one can prove they exist.

See what I did there? :P

user19161
@skull I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. I was only joking with you. Your repeated mentioning of trolling suggests to me what I mentioned, if you want to learn more.

In the absence of genuine evidence, making up an explanation is simply indulging in fantasy.
2

user19161
@Vitaly What did you do?

@Vitaly Just remember: the P in ":P" stands for petulant.

user19161
2:27 PM
It is not clear what Vitaly did there. But I know he did cause me to ask about what he did.

@Borror0 Are you still following HP:MoR?

@Vitaly Of course.
@WillHunting He trolled, accidentally or deliberately, by sneaking religion into a discussion.

This series of cliffhangers is getting under my skin.
I wonder if the next chapter is going to end up with a cliffhanger, too.

user19161
@Borror0 Discussions are always good. They help everyone clarify their understanding.

user19161
Sometimes we may think we know the truth, and then realise 9000 years later we were wrong.

2:33 PM
In science, it usually doesn't take 9000 years for people to admit they were wrong.

user19161
@Borror0 Perhaps by definition trolling is always deliberate.

@Vitaly Do you think Yudkowsky's writing is a bit off in the last two chapters? I remember him blaming the delay on the fact that he bit more than he could chew, by having made so many plots and having to resolve them in so little time. I think it's impacting the quality of his writing. Usually, it's so succinct and clear. The last two chapters feel a lot more rough and a lot less polished than what we're used to.
@WillHunting Unless, you know, you derailed a chatroom or somehow tricked people into wasting time into a pointless endeavor. Like discussing religion on the Internet.

@Borror0 Actually, I think Eliezer is at his best in those last few chapters. He has had enough time to write that arc down.
But then, of course, I could be biased because there haven't been any updates for months.

I thought 78 was several kinds of amazing. But then I felt 79 and 80 were of lower quality. Especially 79, where they try to speculate on the whole Hermione thing. The characters' thought processes and arguments feel a lot weaker and shallow than in the 78 preceding chapters.

Yeah, well, I'd be willing to wager that he made them weaker and more shallow intentionally. That has surely contributed to the air of suspense and hopelessness.

user19161
2:43 PM
I would say there is a kind of faith in science too: making predictions based on experiments.

@Vitaly Perhaps, but usually he's better at communicating his intent. Perhaps it'll all come together beautifully at the end of the Taboo arc. I certainly do not put it past him. he has proven to have an impressive capacity to plan ahead. Since those chapters were all written together, that's quite more likely.

Oh by the way, three other regulars here are following HP:MoR, to my knowledge.

user19161
@Vitaly Only now did I do a search to find out what it stands for.

user19161
It could have been Hewlett Packard: More Office Rations.

It's a "faith" everyone applies evenly. If I hit you with a baseball bat several times, and hurt each time, would you believe the relevant "literature" (i.e., your memory of it hurting) was sufficient or you would hold that I have no way of knowing it would hurt you if I hit once more?

Experiments do have a limit, especially in social science. There is a big debate in economics about the validity of experimental results, since it is unclear if those are valid outside of the lab. But that's not the same thing as having "faith" in experimentation.

2:53 PM
@WillHunting It stands for Harry Potter: Middle of the Road.

user19161
@Borror0 I see Vitaly has succeeded in derailing the chatroom!

No. The Incomprehensible Room cannot be derailed. Not unless everyone suddenly reaches an accord.

user19161
It is interesting how typing an abbreviation lets google search for the phrase.

user19161
@vitaly Did you see Fronstan's link to the Russian wiki?

@WillHunting I added a {{citation needed}} template there. I haven't been able to find anything like that for non-reflexive pronouns stated by a reliable source, and the Russian article is an almost verbatim translation of the English one.

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 HB!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Certainly.

But sometimes it might be a genuinely correct answer that is not immediately parsable, so I usually read and think for a while first before clicking anything with the mouse.

Billy Mays gives the greatest answers. Even after death. I need no further proof of God's existance.

user19161
William Darrell "Billy" Mays, Jr. (July 20, 1958 – June 28, 2009) was an American television direct-response advertisement salesperson most notable for promoting OxiClean, Orange Glo, and other cleaning, home-based, and maintenance products on the Home Shopping Network, and through his company, Mays Promotions, Inc. He and his business partner, Anthony Sullivan, were also featured on PitchMen, a TV series that documented their work. His distinctive beard and impassioned sales pitches made him a recognized television presence in the United States and Canada. Mays was found unresponsive ...

@RegDwightѬſ道 Do you mean "existence"?

What do you think?

Q: Independance or Independence?

JFWWhat other words are like "independence" in British English where you replace the 'a' with an 'e'?

3:54 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Also God's existence.
Haha, late jinx.
Hey, @Vitaly: Do you know of any kind of bark or vegetation that is used by the population around Lake Baikal to deter mosquitoes and gnats and such?
BTW, whose idea was it to attack Serenity? looks at @Reg

@Robusto Um, why Lake Baikal? No, I don't know about that place specifically, but I remember having heard of using garlic, leek, birch oil, and so on to deter that kind of insects. No idea if those work though, they seem to have one thing in common: the smells of them repel most humans.

@Vitaly haha. I use Lake Baikal because I saw a film that purports to be a true story of an escape from a gulag camp somewhere east of Irkutsk. The escapees headed south and traversed the length of Lake Baikal sometime in early summer. They nearly died from flying insects until they got up the courage to ask one of the locals how they could walk by the shore without being bothered.
The local resident showed them some kind of necklace that looked like it was made from twisted bark.

4:12 PM
@Robusto Wow I knew I could troll Will, but you?

@Robusto Well, Google lists literally dozens of plants that are supposedly used to that effect, which, to me, is strong evidence that none of them work (or else they would all worship one single widespread species) or weak evidence that all of them work to some degree, and therefore it is impossible to tell the particular plant.

@Robusto you are an officer. Go pick us a better enemy.
Me, I'm playing Clockwords.

user19161
4:44 PM
@Robusto Now I have no idea whether you are talking about a real place or a place in one of the games you are playing.

user19161
4:54 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Wow, now a mod has become a troll.

@Vitaly Yeah. And it is a film, so I wouldn't be surprised if the truth were being stretched just a teensy bit.
@RegDwightѬſ道 All my enemies are on ignore. I guess that could be a problem.

5:13 PM

@Vitaly: Do you like protein folding?
And do you like helping science?
It is great fun, and I don't even know anything about chemistry or biology.

@RegDwightѬſ道 No need to be such a deutschbag about it.

Q: Using "c'mon guy" instead of "c'mon man"

user1276509Is it possible to use c'mon guy instead of c'mon man?

user19161
Why does the answer say using "guy" could be derogatory?

@WillHunting Yeah have you tried it?

@Cerberus I am too lazy, I only read the article! You are back to sobriety eh?

Yup.

user19161
Actually I have not heard "c'mon guy" anywhere before.

user19161
It seems that "c'mon man" is just a common expression, that's all.

user19161
But I am surprised the question got three close votes so fast.

Does "resulted in studies" make sense?
Problem solved.

user19161
@Gigili It depends on what the sentence is and what you want to mean with it. This is too vague.
