Q: Grub menu and dual bootving

Mikec433Im having some issues with my Grub after a recent dual-boot. I have scoured the internet (and this forum) to find a solution, but I havent been successful. Im relatively new to ubuntu (used to mess with it like 8-10 years ago but its been awhile) so youll have to excuse me if Im not up to par. H...

I have seen some posts about changing the current ubuntu to UEFI though, I am just not sure how to do it or if it will solve my problem. Im not sure I can install from UEFI though because my usb install isnt recognized for some reason unless Im in legacy. Is there really nothing I can do to fix this?
Run sudo parted -l and post output in question.
Sorry I cant get it to look right haha.. Im new here.
What brand/model system? Have you updated UEFI from vendor & updated SSD firmware? Is drive set for AHCI mode, not RAID nor Intel SRT? You need to add AHCI driver to Windows first. You may need to turn on allow USB boot or full USB access to boot in UEFI mode, but often better to have Secure Boot off. See: help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI & askubuntu.com/questions/221835/…

I have a Lenovo thinkpad with a fresh windows install that is 2 days old. Haven’t changed AHCI settings. Is the answer here really to change ahci settings and reinstall in eufi? There’s no better solution?
Also secure boot is disabled and usb mode is allowed full access.
So I don't know a lot about partitions and what is supposed to go on each individual partition. I followed guides on here to get it installed in get my partitions squared away. What I currently have on BIOS is Windows on EUFI and Ubuntu on legacy. Therefore when I load BIOS and set the boot order to EUFI, than windows will load with no other options at startup. If legacy is set to boot order than ubuntu will load with no grub menu. I can press shift for grub menu, but ubuntu is the only option anyways.
I can see you have a GPT disk which means that you must be in UEFI mode to run Windows at all. You have an ESP partition sda1, which is used by both Windows and Ubuntu to boot up. When you use the BIOS boot is Ubuntu shown under Legacy or UEFI mode? Also post output of gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg|grep -A5 Windows
Sorry, I cant figure out how to make it into the nice box of code that I generally see on this forum. Mine just looks like a jumbled mess.
Please delete all this gumf DO NOT EDIT FILE onwards from your question. You need to switch BIOS from Legacy to UEFI mode. 1) Can you boot to any system? 2) Can you boot to your USB? 3) If you boot to BIOS boot manager as before is Ubuntu now seen under UEFI booting?
I can boot to either legacy or uefi by switching them in bios. But in bios under uefi there is only Windows, and under legacy there is only my Ubuntu. I've tried installing several times, but the only way I can get my computer to recognize the usb installer is by going through legacy mode. In UEFI when I choose to boot from USB the live USB does not show up as an option. In Bios I have boot from USB enabled
If It would help, I can also use my phone to upload pictures of videos if I am not explaining things correctly.
OK. You need to be in UEFI mode, and you need to be able to boot from your USB in UEFI mode. So I suggest you remake it. Boot into Windows, reformat the USB to FAT32. Find your Ubuntu ISO and extract the files over to the USB then try booting into Live Ubuntu from this.

My usb is already FAT32 for when I just installed it. And I’ve also tried reformatting and reinstalling on this flash and the usb will still not show up under UEFI, only legacy.
Something seems to be wrong with the method you use to burn your USB-stick. I'd suggest to boot to Ubuntu, open a terminal and type sudo apt install usb-creator-gtk and then use it to burn one more time. Which version of Ubuntu do you use?
See my answer in askubuntu.com/questions/1073492/… , it explains how to convert legacy to efi boot-mode without reinstalling the system.
The version I have is 16.04. But because it installed legacy with no problem I feel like it is something I need to change on my PC. I will take a look at your post about converting. Thank you
Actually, I have tried this before but it was coming up with an error. Would it be okay to chat with you quick instead of doing this via comment, because I think I am putting something in wrong
In your BIOS screen do you have CSM/Legacy disabled? You want UEFI Only option. Have you also disabled Quick Boot (not to be confused with Windows Fast Boot)? Also boot to Windows with USB drive plugged in, and open files. Do a search in the drive for 'efi'.
Right but what I’m saying is when I boot UEFI only I don’t have an option to even open the usb. It doesn’t even show up. I’m going to try and do a 64 bit iso and see if that makes it show up
'I’m going to try and do a 64 bit iso....' I assumed you were using 64 bit ISO rather than 32 bit. I think you'll find that's your problem.

Success! Thank you much for everyones help. Grub now shows up. All is well. Only problem is I think the install got my partitions backwards. I alotted a total of 45 gb for ubuntu. 12 or so for startup and the rest for general storage. But it has 12 gb total for my storage. Is there a way that I can move this free space around?
